First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello, Milliped!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

File:Rightwingdemo-Amsterdam29-may2006.jpg ... Are you sure?

Could it be this was on the 27th, not the 29th? In that case, it would be the same demo mentioned here and here... For the 29th I can't find any match. -- Buzz-tardis (talk) 04:56, 23 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I think you're right; the photo's match and it may well be that the time/date on the old Fuji Finepix was off. 29 is the name of the folder on my PC, but that could well be the date I emptied the SD card. Milliped (talk) 12:56, 23 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
Could you rename/re-upload, as described in Commons:File renaming? thanks. -- Buzz-tardis (talk) 13:02, 23 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

O jeugd waar zijt gij gebleven

Hi, zie -File:Bestevaerstraat1920.jpg-.

Willemsbrug

ARe you sure about the name of the bridge File:WillemsbrugAMS01a.jpg? According to [1]it's a different one. Regards. --Io Herodotus (talk) 10:18, 3 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Salut Io Herodotis! I am sure about the name, but there are two bridges in Amsterdam called Willemsbrug. This one is nr 151. See here for 151 and here for 454. Merci pour la categorisation! Milliped (talk) 17:08, 3 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. The two bridges Category:Brug 454, Willemsbrug look different to me.--Io Herodotus (talk) 18:26, 3 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Just let you know; the name Willemsbrug is withdrawn for bridge 454 starting april 2016 (probably because there was the other bridge which kept it's name). That's why www.bruggenvanamsterdam.nl doesn't mention it anymore. Peter Korrel of that site was or is working for Amsterdam All names that were not official are gone by then of changed). Bridge 454 was Willemsbrug because is was built as a connection between the Vondelpark (for the people) and Willemspark (for the rich). The Vondelpark is still there, but the Willempark is fully built now. It's remembered by the Willemsparkweg, a road named after a park that is not here anymore. Because of this, the article on the dutch wiki is renamed to Brug 454. For here, no changes are necessary. If my recollection is good there was a third Willemsbrug, which name is also withdrawn; it was near the Willemstraat, again in another part of the city.Ceescamel (talk) 16:55, 6 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
In that case Category:Brug 454, WillemsbrugCategory:Brug 454 (in Amsterdam).--Io Herodotus (talk) 01:09, 7 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Haringpakkersbrug

--Stunteltje (talk) 06:04, 12 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
