Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Stanton Building at 111 Union Street at the corner of Federal Street in New London, Connecticut, is a building housing services of the City of New London, such as Public Works Building Inspection Department, Recreation Youth Affairs, and Computer Technology. It may be a former schoolhouse. Note the two entrances, which schools frequently had to provide separate entrances for boys and girls, although there is no inscription over them to indicate this.

On the site - but not identified with this building - was a school for Black children opened in 1837 by Ichabod Pease, who was then 81 years old. Pease, a former slave, acting in the face a anti-Abolitionist sentiment in the city that Black children should not be educated in public schools, requested the School Society to provide $50 annually to pay for his school, which he ran from his house behind St. James Episcopal Church, where he was a member of the congregation for over 60 years.
