The school was founded in 1991 by the ministry of education (Singapore). 1994 it became popular with international families wishing to expose their children to Chinese languages in their education. It moved to its permanent Nam Long Shan Campus in 1995. An extension was carried out in 2002 to build new facilities and make the school taller. In 2006, SISHK celebrated the school's 15 anniversary with a charitable performance at the [[Hong Kong Cultural Centre|Hong Kong Cultural Centre.]] The secondary section was established in 2007 and the former Wan Chai campus opened its gates in 2009. It had been moved to the current one in 2012. Between 2009 and 2012, SISHK became an authorized member of Cambridge IGCSE. It even became a member of the International Baccalaureate World School. The preparatory and primary upgrading project started in 2013 and in the same year the first batch of high-school students graduated. Finally, SISHK celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017. In 2019, the school went through another upgrade to make the school more modern, this ended in 2022.

In 1994, Mandarin courses were offered twice daily per school schedule at the primary school level. Currently, English, Math and Chinese are taught every day in Primary school. Every day, students will have recess time, which lasts for 30 minutes. Lunch also has 30 minutes. Science is only taught from P3 onwards and is taught 3 times a week. SIS celebrated its 15th anniversary on 28 April 2006, with an original [[musical theater|musical performance]] entitled "Reaching out, Touching Lives" involving every pupil in the school. The school also celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2016, with a new piece of artwork inspired by [[Joan Miró]] called Ties That Bind.
On 2nd February 2024, SISHK broke a record in the [[Singapore Book of Records]] for the most number of people doing [[Yusheng|lo hei]] recitations. A total of 1831 people joined the record-breaking event. Students, teachers, staff and parents joined this event in the plaza and classrooms.
