Mrak was ordained a priest on August 13, 1837 by [[Anton Aloys Wolf]], the [[prince-bishop]] of the [[Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ljubljana|Diocese of Ljubljana]].<ref name=rezek/> After passing a rigorous state examination, he was appointed a tutor to the son of Baron Peter Pirquet in [[Legnago]], near [[Verona]], where he remained for two years.<ref name=CE/> He returned to Carniola in 1840 and served as an assistant pastor in Poljane and [[Slavina, Postojna|Slavina]].
 
In 1845 Mrak moved to the United States. He first ministered in [[Northern Michigan]] (at [[L'Arbre Croche]], a mission settlement started by French Jesuits, and [[Peshawbestown]]). He served with his fellow [[Slovenes|Slovenian]], [[the Rev.]] [[Francis Xavier Pierz]]. In 1851 Mrak moved to [[Minnesota]], where he worked for nearly two decades, until 1869. He returned to Michigan that year after being appointed as [[Roman Catholic Diocese of Marquette|Bishop of Sault Sainte Marie and Marquette]], succeeding Fr. [[Frederic Baraga]].
