The district was established in 1897, then named Lom Thuan and controlled by [[Monthon Ratchaburi]]. In 1900 the district office was moved to a temple area, and the name of district changed to Ban Prok district. The office was moved again to Mae Klong camp, Tambon Mae Klong, and at the same time the name changed to Mae Klong. By the government policy, the capital district name should be the same as the province name, Mae Klong district was renamed to Mueang Samut Songkhram in 1938. Since 1964 the district office located on Ekachai road, Tambon Mae Klong.

At the Amphawa Floating Market is the oldest and biggest floating market of Samut Songkram <ref name="Ruatalaylainlom(sail a fishing boat)">Muangnok C., Sompong N., Suangsaard N., Jundman P., Chaaumpol M., (2001). It is a famous floating market of Samut Songkram. There are a lot of boats that sells local products, fruits, and food everyday from 7.00am till noon in the Mae Klong River. This floating market sells a lot of sea food. A lot of tourists who come to Samut Songkram liked to go to this floating market for shopping or eating.
