==Social Commentary==
The Pat & Mat series also seems to be a social commentary on life under communism. There are several ways this theme seems to come out:
* ''''Contentment Propaganda'''': Citizens should be content with their conditions. The government knows what it is doing, and if you try to “fix it” you’ll only make things worse.
* ''''Desperation'''': No matter how hard Pat & Mat try to make things better for themselves, things keep getting worse. This is an allusion to the repression from totalitarian communist regimes.
* ''''Anti-Capitalism Propaganda'''': “[[wiktionary:pull oneself up by one's bootstraps | Pull oneself up by one’s bootstraps]]” is a prominant capitalistic ideal. Pat & Mat could only rely on the more socialistic “rising tide” to lift their boat.
