"Live and Learn" is a song by the Japanese-American rock band Crush 40. It was first released in 2001, as the main theme of the video game Sonic Adventure 2. "Live and Learn" was later released on the band's self-titled 2003 album.[1] The song has also appeared in other video games, such as in several titles in the Super Smash Bros series.[2][3] A remixed version appears in Sonic Generations,[4] and an acoustic version appears on the album Rock 'n' Sonic the Hedgehog: Sessions.[5][6] On Spotify, it is the most popular song from the Sonic Adventure 2 soundtrack, as well as from Crush 40.[7]

Background

About "Live and Learn", Crush 40's vocalist Johnny Gioeli said, "The way it works in the writing process is pretty straightforward. I get a storyboard, I have the original drawings of those games, and the scenes are explained to me and then Jun would tell me 'Johnny we have to write a song about this kind of feeling in this scene.'" Gioeli was given ideas, instrumentals and images about Sonic Adventure 2's story and left to create the lyrics. Gioveli also said, "Jun usually had some music ideas and he would send them to me and then I would go lyrically and melodically crazy. That craziness lead to Sonic Adventure 2's powerful 'Live & Learn'." He further said, "I wasn't sure if it [Live & Learn] was good. I questioned it all the time. I would call Jun and say 'Jun, is it good? Do you like it?'".[8] "Live and Learn" is one of Gioeli's favorite songs.[9]

Jun Senoue, Crush 40's guitarist, said about the song:

First of all, I came up with the intro only and I recorded that as the title music for the trial edition of Sonic Adventure 2. When I worked in the studio in Los Angeles to record some level music, I set up my own rig in another room in the studio to make some arrangements there. The full structure arrangement of "Live & Learn" came out very naturally and was done in a day. I sent my demo to Johnny and he returned it to me with his vocals and the lyrics on it. It was a perfect fit but I lost that first vocal demo, unfortunately. "Live & Learn" has been popular far beyond our expectations. It is fantastic that some of our songs could be Sonic fans' special songs of a lifetime.[10]

Reception

Screen Rant included the song on their list "10 Best Songs from Sonic the Hedgehog Games", and described it as "pulse-pounding".[11][12] GameRant also included it in their "Top Ten Sonic the Hedgehog Songs" list.[13]

Fans have requested the song to be used for the third live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie.[14]
