Satya Vrat Shastri

Dr. Satya Vrat Shastri (also written Satyavrat Shastri) is internationally known as a Sanskrit scholar. He is a honorary professor at the Special Centre for Sanskrit Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He was formerly the head of the Department of Sanskrit and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Delhi, where he was the Pandit Manmohan Nath Dar Professor of Sanskrit, from 1970 through 1995. He received his B.A. and M.A. in Sanskrit from Punjab University, and his Ph.D at the Banaras Hindu University.[1]

Dr. Shastri was also vice-chancellor at the Shri Jagannath Sanskrit University, Puri, Orissa, and visiting professor at six universities on three continents: Chulalongkorn and Silpakorn Universities in Bangkok and Northeast Buddhist University, Nongkhai, Thailand, the University of Tubingen, Tubingen, Germany, the Catholic University, Leuven, Belgium and University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.

Dr. Shastri is further distinguished as having been the Sanskrit instructor to Thailand's Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn from Oct. 7, 1977 until Nov. 2, 1979. [2] [3] [4]

He has also written Kavya, or Sanskrit sonnets.

His current projects are the works on the Sanskrit inscriptions and Hindu temples of Thailand, Kalidasa Studies, a critical edition of the Yogavasistha, research on the Sanskritic vocabulary of South East Asia, and the Rama story in South East Asia.
