Jovan Šibalija is Serb from Montenegro, Old Herzegovina and a member of the Drobnjak tribe. Together with other Drobnjaci heroes, such as Šujo Karadžić, Đoko Malović, Gavrilo Šibalija and others, he offered great resistance to the Turks before and during the First Serbian Uprising. For the purpose of liberation and unification, he maintained ties with Karađorđe, Peter of Cetinje and Archimandrite Arsenij. He participated in the conquest of Belgrade in the First Serbian Uprising, together with Šujo Karadžić, Vasa Čarapić and Uzun-Mirko. On that occasion, the Turks wounded him. Jovan Šibalija died replacing Karađorđe in a duel against the famous Turkish megdanji (Single combat) of that time, Turan Bey, who also died in the same duel. Jovan Šibalija was buried in Oplenac with full military honors.
