re William Holden Hutton Thank you

The site is very slow tonight and I must have made a slight mistake uploading my new page. It is not, as you so rightly deduced "patent nonsense". Having been reading about him all evening he seems a most distinguished gentleman and worthy of a Wikipedia article Bashereyre (talk) 20:42, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Looks like the patent nonsense template was the work of an over-zealous new-page patroller. -- Ed (Edgar181) 20:47, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

IP 204.128.70.65: Thanks

Thank you for blocking my school's IP address. Now I shouldn't have to worry about nonsense vandalism from apathetic students for another year or so. It is appreciated.

what was the point in deleting my article, i want to my views on racism and my beliefs . if you don't like it don't read it..im also related to ijaz butt so i should have my own page. like my article said concentrate on your own life and don't affect others. :@ —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gabii ox (talkcontribs) 20:01, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Deletion

Hi, I am wondering why the article on Damian Carrasco Zanini was deleted? I found it to be very interesting and personally motivating. Considering the trials and tribulations of a second generation American. Please do not quash this type of free speech and creative expression.

Thanks,

Unblock request from User:R.T123456

User:R.T123456 has requested unblocking, claiming that "someone from his school hacked his account". Since he has no substantive edits I've suggested he create a new account, keep the password secret this time, and use the new one to edit constructively. As the blocking admin, have you any objection to my removing "prevent account creation" from his block? Tonywalton Talk 20:40, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you're asking. Only a block on an IP address will have a "prevent account creation" setting. The March 4th block on R.T123456 would have had a 24 hour autoblock, but he should be able create another account by now. In any case, please feel free to do whatever you deem is appropriate. -- Ed (Edgar181) 00:09, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps I'm dim, but the log entry seems to have "(account creation blocked)" on there. Maybe the blocking system was over-eager! Either way, I'll explicitly change the block to an indef with account creation allowed. Frankly I have little hope that this editor will create wonders, but I'll WP:AGF. Cheers, 00:57, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, not your fault - what I wrote wasn't what I meant to say. Changing the account creation setting shouldn't make any difference since the autoblock doesn't have any effect after 24 hours. Perhaps the user was also using an IP address that is blocked from creating new accounts. Anyway, thanks for taking care of it. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:31, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

3-(p-Fluorobenzoyloxy)tropane

Hi Edgar. I seem to have made the embarrassing mistake of creating the page for this compound under the wrong name! Turns out that both 3-(p-Fluorobenzoyl)tropane and 3-(p-Fluorobenzoyloxy)tropane are known compounds with defined (but quite different) activity. So I moved the page to the correct name and posted a structure under the new name, but this still leaves the original page as a redirect and the original (incorrect) structure on wikimedia commons, does this matter? Apart from anything else I don't think the original name should be a redirect as they are not synonyms, they are two different compounds! Meodipt (talk) 01:55, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

No problem, it's an easy mistake to make. I have deleted the redirect and fixed links from the old name to the new one. If you want the old structure deleted on Commons, you can simply mark it with the template {{badname}} and it will be speedily deleted (or just let me know and I'll delete it). -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:30, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Deleting Fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl chloride

Hi Ed,

Can you clarify what needs to be changed.

Also why was the additional image deleted? It was referenced from the site from which it was used. I understand changing the words (despite the fact that they were given a source reference).

Thanks,

TV3 Medford page

Hi Ed,

TV3 Medford is currently undergoing an "evaluation" and was audited by the firm of Melanson Heath.

The individuals who refuse to let go of the TV station have posted multiple changes to the TV 3 Wikipedia page utilizing it like their own personal webpage, which isn't the intent of Wikipedia.

They have Dan Sarno - ISP #70.88.213.234 - posting the names of the self-appointed president, Frank Pilleri, along with other "board members" on the page promoting their propaganda. This is not a fair use of Wikipedia, is highly misleading, and they are deleting legitimate links to articles from the press in regards to the audit and the evaluation. They list themselves and control the Wikipedia page

TV3 Medford's staff promoting their agenda on Wikipedia

Please note that their webmaster, ZappTV, has also attempted to post the non-profit's authorized information and not objective information regarding the embattled station's history in Medford.

Shell Kinney did a decent edit previously that they changed.

Can you monitor the situtation?

Thank you. Petition (talk) 22:48, 15 March 2009 (UTC)petitionPetition (talk) 22:48, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

I realize this is something I've looked into before, and I have taken some administrative actions, but at this point I think it would be better handled through Wikipedia's Open-source Ticket Request System. You can find details at Wikipedia:OTRS. OTRS will be better suited to dealing with this type of situation. -- Ed (Edgar181) 23:01, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

User: Beanbuff

Hi Edgar, I'm a novice user who has an interest in coffee and fairtrade in general. However I have edited very little and the one article I created I put together on my user page and got feed back before putting it up. I was doing the same thing with another until Canton nominated my user page for deletion as "blatant advertising". I understand some people might take issue with many aspects of the article (I'm new, lots of mistakes) which is why I didn't just make the article. Having said all this, why delete my user page? It would have been a good article. Your and cantons criticism would surely have made it better. Thanks!Beanbuff (talk) 23:00, 16 March 2009 (UTC) 23:00, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Usually, your user page is reserved for information about you (see WP:USER). When someone puts information about a company or organization there, it can come across as an attempt at advertising. It's probably best to use a subpage (see WP:SUBPAGE) for articles that you are working on. I've copied the material that was on your user page and put it at User:Beanbuff/sandbox. I hope this helps, and sorry about the misunderstanding. -- Ed (Edgar181) 00:15, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

2009 Spanish Grand Prix

Is it worth undeleting this (and the related other race pages?) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.151.212.201 (talk) 17:31, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Sure, I have now undeleted 2009 Spanish Grand Prix. If you or someone else could verify and/or expand it, that would be helpful. Also, just give me a list of "the related other race pages" if there are similar ones to be undeleted. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:57, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
From what I can tell as of now the other races have simply not been created, rather than deleted. I think there was one other, but this may have been dealt with in the interim. Thanks for your timely input. 78.151.212.201 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 19:59, 18 March 2009 (UTC).

Imazalil

Hi, can you help fill out imazalil? I think this chemical has many synonyms, but I'm not sure if "imazalil" is a brand/trade name, or what our article title should be. Badagnani (talk) 17:12, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

It's the same as enilconazole, which I created a stub for and then merged imazalil into it. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:40, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Sodium o-phenylphenate

Hi, do we have an article on sodium o-phenylphenate, under some other name? Badagnani (talk) 17:12, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

For chemistry articles we normally have salt forms (as is the case here) redirect to the parent compound, so I have redirected to the existing article at 2-Phenylphenol. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:40, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for all of the above. I added this name, which is used in the citrus trade, in that article. What does the "o" mean? Badagnani (talk) 18:27, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
The "o" is short for "ortho", which denotes a certain geometric relationship between various parts of the molecule. It means the same as the "2" in 2-phenylphenol. The article arene substitution patterns has details if you're interested. -- Ed (Edgar181) 22:30, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

82.76.128.81 blocking philosophy

Hello and thanks for issuing a block; i was wondering, though, what is the philosophy behind blocking a person for a day who seems to exhibit a trend of bad behaviour once every day or two and they've already performed today. ? Thanks in advance. Quaeler (talk) 11:30, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

My preference (and common practice among other admins) is to give short blocks at first, then to give longer blocks if the user continues the inappropriate behavior thereafter. Most people seem to get the idea after the first block, and often turn into more productive contributors. If you notice that the user continues the spamming after the block expires, please just let me know and I'll block again. -- Ed (Edgar181) 16:11, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Alrighty - seems like a plausible strategy. Thanks much for the reply. Quaeler (talk) 16:17, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Chlorogenic acid

Hi, Ed:

Chlogenic acid should not use the number system of quinic acid, right? Caffic acid wiht OH should higher piority than rest of OH group, so, 3- instead of 5- should be reasonable, as in HMDB, Pubmed, and so on. 6-posion (no matter what number system) has no OH group, how it can have 6-Isomerisation as you have edited? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.52.50.233 (talk) 18:22, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

It didn't seem right to me at the time, but now that I look more closely, I think you're right. I've restored your edits. Sorry about the confusion. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:09, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Beau Kazer

Hello, I recently created a page for the actor Beau Kazer, which I noted had previously existed on wikipedia and which you deleted in February 2008. I couldn't tell what the page had said in its previous existence, so I hope I haven't spent time recreating an article on a non-notable person. If you wouldn't mind providing me with some feedback (either on my talk page or the article's), I'd appreciate it. Thanks. Zephyrnthesky (talk) 21:54, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

I deleted the previous version of the article because it was a copyright violation. It was copied word-for-word from another website. Recreating the article (well written and in your own words) was the right thing to do. -- Ed (Edgar181) 09:46, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Joseph Greco Deletion

Can you please tell me why the page on Joseph Greco was deleted? I tried to find your deletion log entry, which I assume would explain it, but couldn't. I've never done this before, so maybe I'm doing it wrong. Thanks.

Bbb23 (talk) 19:47, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

I deleted the article Joseph Greco nearly three years ago because it met speedy deletion criteria A7 (it made no assertion of notability). The log can be found here. -- Ed (Edgar181) 22:51, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the response. I found that entry, but it didn't say why you deleted it, so I assumed I hadn't found the complete entry. The link you provide to A7 (explaining speedy deletion) takes me to a project about the military. I think Wikipedia is great for information, but I find it extraordinarily difficult to navigate and understand once you go underneath the covers (like here).

Aromatic ethers can be linear...

Hi Edgar181,

You have tagged quite a few of my structures with "Methoxy groups should not be linear". I had explained this earlier to another user somewhere. Aromatic methoxy groups and other aromatic ethers are always oriented perpendicular to the aromatic ring for steric reasons. If you look at the model from above the aromatic plane, the methoxies appear straight. I am a big proponent of retaining as many 3D structural features in 2D as possible without sacrificing clarity and correctness. We cannot use the straight orientation for carbon chains as this obscures the center carbon in skeletal structures, but I do not see a reason not to do this for aromatic ethers and I am not aware of any general rule not to do so. Maybe you can rethink your tags... :-) Cacycle (talk) 23:39, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
