Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by RyanGerbil10 (talk | contribs) at 03:46, 30 June 2010 (→‎Errors in Did you know?). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 03:26 on 24 September 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in the summary of today's or tomorrow's featured article

"Rivera has become regarded as one of the best closers in baseball history, and he has achieved his success by primarily throwing one pitch—a sharp-breaking cut fastball that has been called an all-time great pitch."

I suppose it would a bit over the top to claim that this sentence is ungrammatical, but it is unnecessarily awkward and poorly constructed.

Rivera is already regarded as one of the best closers in baseball history. Moreover, he has achieved success with what is fundamentally a single pitch: a sharp-breaking cut fastball that overpowers hitters like none other.

I re-worded it a little, but the whole thing is meaningless to me since I know nothing (and have no desire to know anything) about baseball! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 06:31, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in In the news

Template:ITN-Update Shouldn't the 'Isner v Mahut' link in the tennis story link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isner%E2%80%93Mahut_match_at_the_2010_Wimbledon_Championships rather than http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longest_tennis_match_records ? Matt Adore (talk) 23:40, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The words 'Isner v Mahut' don't appear on the Main Page, so did you mean at the end of the sentence where it says longest match in tennis history? We wouldn't link that to Isner–Mahut match at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships because the bolded link defeats already links there. Art LaPella (talk) 00:51, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in today's or tomorrow's On this day

The way the Shuttle-Mir item is phrased, it sounds like the picture should show the shuttle docked to Mir - it does not, depicting Mir alone. I wish we could use File:Atlantis Docked to Mir.jpg, which is a much better illustration. However, while the 'no fair use on the main page' policy still exists, I suggest 'the Russian space station Mir (pictured) and Space Shuttle Atlantis docked together' or similar. Modest Genius talk 00:37, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tbh, I don't think the current wording is particularly ambiguous as to what the image is referring to. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:45, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's a picture of the original Globe Theatre. -- tariqabjotu 20:50, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reporters: please first correct today's or tomorrow's regular version.
The obvious error is that today's featured picture does not exist. Would an admin please create Template:POTD protected/2010-06-30 with the content:

Errors in Did you know?

Great Black Wasp not Great Black Waſp Tiddy (talk) 03:42, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. Actually, some sources capitalize it and some don't, thus I'm not sure that it should be in capitals. Materialscientist (talk) 03:44, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, as to the archaism of the long s, it has no place on the main page. RyanGerbil10(Four more years!) 03:46, 30 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
