Kew Bridge Eco Village is an ecovillage and social centre based on a piece of squatted land near Kew Bridge in West London, England. The land, owned by property developers St George, was occupied on July 6th 2009 by land rights activists inspired by land rights campaign group The Land is Ours.

The Site

The former Scottish Widows site, which is approximately one acre of brown field land, is reported to have been vacant for over 20 years. Current owners property developers St George have submitted plans for 164 flats, a business center, pub and gym.[1] Community planning meetings have been held by the local council to decide on the acceptability of the plans. Previous submissions have not been accepted, but the developers have affirmed their intent to build on the site once permission is granted.

The Eco Village an it's residents

In December 2009 the Eco Village at Kew Bridge had 32 permenent residents. The structures built include a shower, a compost toilet, and a kitchen. Most of the structures are bender tents made from tree branches and recycled materials. The villagers organize themselves through consensus decision making and are in the most part motivated by the intention to live a more simple but ecologically friendly life style. The community is sustained by food which is skipped, and some residents describe themselves as Freegan. Though some of the residents were previously homeless, many have left houses and jobs in order to pursue an anti-consumerist way of living.

Events and Activities

Kew Bridge Eco Village has held various events and activities including live music, live poetry, arts and crafts workshops, pagan festivals, film nights, face painting and yoga.
