Welcome Merlinus

Hi Right Back Atchya!

It's nice to "meet" you, Marc. I actually live in Maryland, but I come from Massachusetts (and think it's a much cooler - in both weather and the slang sense of the word - state than Maryland). I am 16 years old, my name is Emily, and I mainly use Wikipedia when I want to know something, or when I'm obsessing over everything Harry Potter. I see you like Harry Potter too! I support the disabled, and I'm glad you're recovering! I know I'm only 16- but I'm much smarter (I think) and involved in the world than you might think. You can read my user page- perhaps you already have. I like Fantasy and Science Fiction books a lot- I also like a ton of tv, but I hardly watch any during the week. It's all on Saturday night or Sunday at my dad's apartment! I tape record (still on a VCR) shows during the week... it's really fun to watch a bunch of tv in a row. Anyway, it's nice to meet you. Oh yeah- I like the Beatles! But I've never obsessed over music- there's so many other great things to obsess over! Go to www.funtrivia.com, which, as you can see from my signature, is my favorite website (although I love Wikipedia, which is taking away from my precious FunTrivia time). I've put 41 quizzes online! Again, it's always nice to hear from someone. I have Math and English homework to do- yikes! I still have to read Act V of "Twelfth Night" and answer questions, and do a review ditto on factoring for my Honors Functions, Statistics, and Trigonometry class. And it's 9:09pm. Did I forget to mention- most of all, I'm a procrastinator! I hope I didn't spell too much wrong- I hate that! I'm sorry I didn't link anything- I'm too rushed. Bye for now! Emily (Funtrivia Freak) 01:10, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also- the "Unenrolled voter" stuff is interesting, and I too oppose the Iraq war. Did you mean to say "I REMEBER" (and not r-e-m-e-M-b-e-r) in your caption for the French-Canadian thing? I assumed it was a typo- but I didn't want to change it, because my edit thing is acting funny and maybe it meant something I didn't get. Welcome!

It's a pleasure to make your aquaintance, if only virtually - I am just up the road from you in Boston, where I attend college and am just wrapping up my second year. I haven't that much else to say; I am also a new Wikipedian, speaking in relative terms - and I don't contribute as much as I want to, especially at the present, being overwhelmed with finals - but they're almost done with, thank goodness. Well I must be off, can't wait to see what you bring to our wonderful community! [[1]] --Raj Fra 02:14, 26 April 2006 (UTC)<:)>[reply]

Hello

Thank you for saying hello. I hope that your return to Wikipedia is marked by stability. May your recovery continue on without interruption! I don not have a whole lot to say as I am still learning about Wikipedia, but I hope to become more active in discussions in the future. With some few exceptions, I tend not to discuss my political beliefs extensively nor do I try to force them onto others. I am more of a peacekeeper kind of Wikipedian. Take care and enjoy your spring! Mappychris 05:18, 26 April 2006 (UTC)mappychris<:)>[reply]

Hi there! I hope you're planning to come to Wikimania 2006 this summer... nice to meet you. Let me know if you're ever in Cambridge. +sj + 05:45, 26 April 2006 (UTC)<:)>[reply]

Hola!

I read your profile page and noticed you read Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I'm a huge HP nut, so if you are, then I'm glad we're in the same boat! Welcome to Wikipedia, by the way! --Fanficgurl 3:05, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Hello

Hi Merlinus, I have been extremely busy these days, and so I did not get a chance to answer your question right away from about a week ago. How are you finding things on Wikipedia these days? --HappyCamper 03:22, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to hear! I would not worry too much about the online internet culture. It is almost a given that you will encounter abrasive people - just make sure they don't get to you, and you'll do fine. I will give you a few tips - be careful what you say, because everything on the internet is very public, and very persistent. You want to be on the good side of that :-) Remember, it's extremely hard to remove information that you release, and even harder for the internet to forgive and forget. Having said this, it simply means that you have to be a bit smart and creative when expressing your thoughts, opinions, and feelings. Sometimes, the combination of being a bit politically correct, light-hearted, and assertive works well. By the way, if you need a scratchpad, edit this page here User:Merlinus/Sandbox. Also, check out WP:RD - this place gives you a chance to interact with more interesting and nice people on Wikipedia. --HappyCamper 06:35, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thryduulf

Wikipedia:Guide to deletion gives a good introduction to how the deletion process works on Wikipedia. It also features a "Shorthands" that explains all the mysterious phrases found in deletion debatse. Thryduulf 19:43, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Thryduulf, that's the page I was really looking for! --HappyCamper 19:46, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah...no worries :-) Just another random thought...it occurred to me you might find Wikipedia:Sandbox/Word Association a friendly introduction to learn how to properly wikify articles and deal with tables. There are lots of examples there. --HappyCamper 19:49, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Red, Gray, and Green

I believe you are right. We need people of all kinds. I know my views vary with a specific issue. When I said I was a peacemaker, I really meant I only argue for the sake of academics or conversation. Fair and respectable debate is something I do appreciate. Mappychris 05:47, 28 April 2006 (UTC)mappychris[reply]

A response

It's a private concern of mine as well. However, I do believe that people only find what they are consciously looking for. The internet (like many other technologies) vastly improves the quality of life for many, but at the same time also introduces more complicated problems for society to solve. Even if the internet had some sort of mechanism for patrol, it would not work. The humans (especially the teenagers) are always wittier :-) To solve the ethical dilemma you asked about would probably require greater transparency and advocacy in the educational system. Simply put, people who use the internet need to be educated about the consequences of using it, so they can make informed choices. Let me tell you that it is the precisely the younger generation that is driving most of the improvments of the technology - they are the most familiar and versatile users of the internet, and will remain so for the foreseeable future. --HappyCamper 22:01, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You weren't rude...

Sorry, but you said you didn't feel comfortable talking to me, since I'm only 16. And I haven't been on Wikipedia that much recently- I've been on FunTrivia a lot. But you weren't rude! Sorry- I don't know when that "Harry Pottey 7- "Witch Wars"" will be coming out- never heard of it... Protesting against the protesters! That's funny. I'd forgotten that was today! Have fun with your brother-in-law. Talk to you again sometime soon! You can play one of my quizzes on FunTrivia if you'd like! Pretty please, would you? I'd like to hear what you think of one of them. You could probably play the "Harry Potter" ones! Just click on this link: [2] and scroll down to my list of quizzes! Hi Merlinus,

Hello to you, too

Hello, I got your message "WikiNeighbor." Nice music choice, I also like music and have acollection of antique books. I am also, as you said for yourself, not Democratic or Republican; I like the platform of the Green Party. However, I am a student and cannot vote. Rmpfu89 23:20, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry Folks; I was traumatized by my dealing with the Nambla site because of my own bad experiences as a kid. I should have been able to control my terror and stay calm, but I was really scared. When I felt provoked by Nathan (real)or just by my own fears I assumed wrongly that he was a member of NAMBLA. It was intuitive and it was wrong. I am fairly new to computers... and newer even to going on line and did not know capital letters meant yelling. I figure I owe Nathan a "APOLAGY" "APOLOGY" (that's not yelling, I just could not remember how to spell it). Sorry Nathan. --merlinus 12:47, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I struck the incorrectly spelled word, now you know which is correctly spelled. Not going to hang around over here but I'll post if I see my name. — nathanrdotcom (Got something to say? Say it.) 02:08, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Micheal

Thanks for coming over to help Dawna and I again, and working tirelessly for four hours to fix our old comuters... I know it was a lot more work than you had planned. Your "Do's" and "Don't's" while using e-mails and internet seem overcautious, but that the way its got to be from now on. I hope you enjoyed the big Catfish fillets and fries. I could not have done it without you. Your the best. Your Bro in law, Marc--merlinus 13:33, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • PS. Your Cats Friends (Jeffy, Gismo & Echo) Luv ya too!
  • PPS: My buds Eric and Tim are coming by Saturday or Sunday U-R Welcome to join! Roast Chicken will be on the menu!

Spread the WikiLove by smiling to someone else, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend: Yes, good Idea, I should like to send one to Nathan and to George. On my page I said that I disabled and did not deal with stress well. I am sorry that my problems got the best of me.

I wish you the best of luck with Jeffy; I'll continue to hope that he gets well soon. Joe 04:04, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update about Jeffy

Jeffy my 16 year old cat was very sick and it was really touch and go. The Vet gave him IV liquids under the skin to rehydrate him, gave him meds to help him a procudure to help him go to the bathroom and daily meds to do the same. A new special diet and a list of instructions to make sure he eats solid foods and does not lose more weight. He's not out of hot water yet, but seems to be getting stronger. Thanks for your understanding. Marc. --merlinus 20:30, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome!

Welcome and Congratulations on joining the project! I'm sorry this welcome message took so long, but you joined during my Wikibreak, and I assumed that someone else would welcome you in the meantime. Still, that's no excuse, and I am most humbly sorry. Sergeant Snopake 20:51, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've been chilling out for a while and busy with my wife, family, cats and basicly trying to sort a few things out on this end. Jeff gained about 1/2 pound in the last week if your following his recorvery. My three cats mean a very lot to me- especially jeffy. Take care for now. Marc--

MESSAGE FROM MERLINUS

I'm still out here living my life with my wife as the world swirls on around us. At this juncture I wish express sympathy for our gay brothers and sisters who are being criminalized by the insane few fanatics who dont believe that church and state need be seperate. The real criminals are Shell, Mobil and Exxon and the war in Iraq and the Republican Goverment is trying to take the focus off that onto its base of screwed up hypacritic, paranoid homophobes. Would Jesus tote a gun and shoot down anyone who disagreed with him or tresspassed onto his fathers property? Gimmie a break! Bush and his criminal cronies are married to big buisness and oil companies. Its obvious and criminal. Pay all the workers a fair wage and these problems... and the worries about immigration would go away. Lobbiest and right wing special interests have the ear of our government and not the voters... do someting about it when you vote. File:Peace Sign 2.svg Merlinus (Massachusetts: Personal Freedom is Our Way of life!)

Jeffy

For those of you that are following his recovery progress reports, Jeffy is about 100% better. Thanks for all of your well wishes (in person), E-mails and support. File:Peace Sign 2.svg Merlinus (Massachusetts: Personal Freedom is Our Way of life!)

Yay for Jeffy! :-) --HappyCamper 20:56, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Guys

I've been away for a while... quite a while... living my life, expanding my horizons beyon the computer and so on. For one my wife and family come first... I love them unconditionally. I value our American basic freedoms and fear that they are being chipped away slowly. The supreem court ruled yesterday that police can enter a suspects home without knocking first. I am concerned enough that in a sense I agree with the free speech absolutist who are in some cases anarchists. Let's all stop fighting and keep an eye on the real enemies... we are nothing but cannon fodder to those who would deny freedom to the millions. We need to stop being diviaded and unite against a common enemy who would destoy our freedoms one by one... I see this now. I did not before! I conceded the point of it. FYI re HC

In case you didn't come across it yet, Laurascudder has written an excellent "Outside view" at MDW's RFC that you may want see or add commentary. We feel pretty much the same as yourself about HC. --hydnjo talk 18:55, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
