Background

On August 28, 2022, Swift announced her tenth studio album, Midnights when she won Video Of The Year at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, set to be released on October 21, 2022; the tracklist of the album was not revealed.[2] Her long-time collaborator, Jack Antonoff who had worked with her before on her five studio albums since 1989 (2014), was revealed as one of the producers of Midnights when she posted a video on her Instagram account on September 6, 2022, titled "The making of Midnights".[3]

On September 21, 2022, Swift began unveiling the Midnights track-list in a randomized order through a short video series on TikTok, titled Midnights Mayhem with Me. Consisting of 13 episodes,[4] Swift announces a song title with each episode[5] by rolling a lottery cage containing 13 ping pong balls numbered from one to thirteen,[6] each representing a track of Midnights. When a ball drops out, she announces the title of the corresponding track on the album through a telephone.[7] In episode five of the series, she revealed "Maroon" on September 30, 2022.[8]
