Martin Valjent (born 11 December 1995) is a Slovak professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for La Liga club Mallorca and the Slovakia national team.[2]

Club career

FK Dubnica

He started his football career in Dubnica, his hometown, and was a part of MFK Dubnica. On November 10, 2012, he had his first senior football appearance, helping secure a 1–0 win against Partizán Bardejov.

Ternana

At the age of 17, he joined the Italian Serie B club Ternana Calcio in the summer of 2013.[3] He made his debut for the club on September 28, 2013, in a 1–2 defeat against Varese. In his first season, he played six matches with the first team.

He became a regular starter in the 2014/15 season, playing 37 matches, 35 of them in Serie B.

On May 14, 2016, Valjent scored his first goal in a 1–1 draw against Virtus Lanciano.

Chievo Verona and back to Ternana

At the end of the transfer window in the summer of 2017, Valjent transferred to AC Chievo Verona in Serie A. However, he remained at Ternana, where he was on loan during the 2017/18 season.

Mallorca

In August 2018, Valjent made a move to RCD Mallorca on loan, a prominent team in the Spanish second division.[4] He marked his debut for the team on August 31, in a closely contested 0–1 match against Alcorcón. Mallorca's impressive fifth-place finish led to their promotion to the top Spanish football league after securing victory in the promotion play-offs.where they defeated Albacete Balompié and Deportivo La Coruña to secure promotion to the top tier of Spanish football.

On June 26, 2019, Mallorca exercised the purchase option on Valjent for a fee of 1.5 million euros.[5] In the 2019/20 season, Mallorca were relegated from La Liga to the Segunda División.

On October 3, 2020, Valjent scored his first goal for the club in a 2–0 victory over CD Tenerife.

In February 2021, Valjent extended his contract with Mallorca until 2025.[6]

International career

Valjent was first called up to the Slovakia national team by Ján Kozák sr. for fixtures against Netherlands and Morocco on 31 May and 4 June 2018 respectively. This was done due to Gyömbér and Štetina's injuries.[7] Valjent debuted during a match against Morocco in Geneva, replacing Tomáš Hubočan in the 79th minute.[8]

Valjent's first competitive start came in a Euro 2020 qualifying fixture against Croatia on 6 September 2019 in Trnava, with Valjent playing as a right-back. Slovakia lost the game 4–0.[9] It was that Valjent had a difficult task in defending Dejan Lovren at the side-line, as his preferred post is the one of a centre-back.[10] In October, Valjent returned to the national team in a friendly match against Paraguay on his preferred post. His performance was reported on very positively, receiving praise from RTVS' commentary expert Marián Zeman during the farewell game for Martin Škrtel, with whom he starred in the starting XI, as well as Hubočan and Adam Nemec. This game also coincided with a return to Tehelné pole after some ten years and concluded with a 1–1 tie.[11]

On 26 August 2020, Valjent was called up by the Slovak senior squad to take part in the two opening matches of the UEFA Nations League against the Czech Republic and Israel.[12]
