History

The Toronto Paramedic Association was formed in 1992 to represent the professional of Paramedics employed by Toronto Emergency Medical Services (TEMS). During initial stages of development membership consisted largely of Advanced Care Practitioners. Over time the TPA has grown to include membership from all practitioner levels within TEMS.


The Toronto Paramedic Association is a Chapter of the Ontario Paramedic Association (OPA) [www.ontarioparamedic.ca OPA] The OPA, having 2,800 members, is a chapter of the Paramedic Association of Canada, which has over 14,000 members [www.paramedic.ca PAC] The Toronto Paramedic Association is not a labour representative. The labour interests of members are represented by CUPE Local 416. [www.local416paramedics.com]


Objectives

  • To promote the highest standard of health care.
  • To assist in the establishment of a medical self-regulatory body.
  • To assist in the creation and maintenance of a provincial standards of practice.
  • To collaborate in the maintenance of national standards of practice.
  • To inspire excellence in the profession.
  • To exert a positive influence on government and the medical community.
  • To create an enhanced public awareness of the role, capabilities, functions of ambulance/pre hospital care.
  • To promote unity and harmony among the members through information exchange.
  • To provide an atmosphere in the ambulance and pre hospital care community, which will encourage and foster adherence to the profession's standards of practice.
  • To assist in establishing a working, cooperative relationship with the Provincial Government, regarding legislation and policies affecting the Association, its members and the public.
  • To assist in maintaining a permanent record of the profession's history, so that the profession's past is better honored and its future better envisioned.
  • To facilitate programs of continuing education.
  • Take an active role in the development, promotion, and participation of programs within the community to prevent accidents and illness.
