Shelly Oria

Shelly Oria is an Israeli-American author, teacher and creative coach. Oria has written collections of short stories and other fiction. Her work has been featured in several publications like The Paris Review and McSweeney's. Her 2015 collection of short stories New York 1, Tel Aviv 0 was her first published in book form. Random House Canada and FSG published the work in November. Oria received attention about the book from NPR, The New York Times and other outlets. She's also a writing award and fellowship winner.

Personal life and achievements

Oria was born in Los Angeles, California but grew up in Israel. She identifies as a queer writer and she features LGBTQ characters in her stories. She received the Indiana Review Fiction Prize, a Sozopol Fiction Seminars Fellowship and was an artist in residence with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council between 2014-2015. As of March 16,2015, Oria is a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award and a nominee for the Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction.

Education

Oria received a MFA from Sarah Lawrence College in 2007. She learned to write in Hebrew at the college in 2006. Oria studied how to be a life and creative coach while in Israel between 2008-2009 in the Alder Institute and with Julia Cameron in 2004.

Current life

Oria lives in Brooklyn, New York and has several projects. She curates the Sweet! Actors Reading Writers website. The website is on a break until June 2015. She works at Pratt Institute as a fiction teacher and a co-director for the Writer's Forum. Oria also serves as a life and creative coach with a private practice. She's had the private practice since 2009.
