The Twilight Zone is an upcoming 2019 science fiction web television series, developed by Jordan Peele. It will be the first television program in the Twilight Zone media franchise to be created for CBS All Access, an over-the-top streaming video on demand service owned by CBS.

It is the fourth television entry into the Twilight Zone franchise, and is the third of three revival series adapted from creator Rod Serling's original 1959-64 television series. Peele will serve as the show's host and narrator, following suit from Forest Whitaker (in the second revival) and Serling, respectively. The series was first explored in 2012 by Bryan Singer, before entering development in November 2017, with a ten-episode season ordered by CBS the next month.

Twilight Zone will be helmed by Peele, Marco Ramirez and Simon Kinberg, and produced by CBS Television Studios, Kinberg's Genre Films and Peele's Monkeypaw Productions. It is set to premiere in 2019.

Development

After the original series had ran from 1959 to 1964, creator Rod Serling sold his share of the series to CBS, who would later produce the first eponymous revival of the series, which ran for three season from 1985 to 1989 but failed to gain momentum from audiences. UPN would later make a second revival series which met a similar fate, running for only one season from 2002 to 2003.

In December 2012, Bryan Singer was reportedly developing and executive producing a third revival television series for CBS Television Studios. A writer for the series was not chosen and the program was not pitched to any networks. CBS, which broadcast the original series and the 1985-89 revival series, was reportedly interested.[1][2][3][4][5]

In February 2013, Singer told TG Daily that the project was still in development and that he hoped to direct the pilot and have A-list actors appear on the revival.[6] The following month, he told IGN that a writer with whom he had previously worked was in negotiations to join the revival and that he felt "passionate" towards the original series and the planned revival.[7]

In April 2016, Ken Levine was in talks with CBS to write and direct a pilot episode, which was described as "interactive" and would have been "something between a film and a game".[8][9]

In November 2017, former CBS Chairman and CEO Les Moonves stated that a new Twilight Zone series was in development for CBS All Access, CBS's over-the-top video on demand service.[10] Simultaneously, Jordan Peele and Marco Ramirez were later reported to be in talks to develop the show, with Ramirez to serve as a potential showrunner, and that Levine and Singer were no longer involved in the project.[11] Peele, as well as Simon Kinberg and Ramirez, were later confirmed as executive producers of the show on December 6, when CBS All Access ordered a ten-episode season for the series.[12][13][14]

Peele was revealed to be the show's host and narrator on September 2018, with a announcement trailer released by CBS All Access which revealed the series' release date to be scheduled for 2019.[15]
