Gibson is a Scottish surname.[1] It can be a sept of Clan Campbell, Clan Buchanan or Clan MacMillan. In Ireland, Gibson may be an anglicized form of the Irish Gaelic Ó Gibealláin.[2][3]

It may also be derived from the popular medieval name Gilbert (itself derived from Giselbert or Gillebert), introduced to England and Ireland by the Normans and often shortened to "Gib". In this case the surname Gibson would mean "son of Gib".[4][5]
