Etymology
Ashok Sundari was created from a tree by Parvati to get rid from her loneliness. The words in her name ashok are derived as she got rid of Parvati’s ‘shok’ which means sorrow and sundari means a beautiful girl.
Birth and Curse
The birth of Ashok Sundari goes by that Shiva is initially a detached hermit who is not interested in any worldly pleasures. Shiva later gets married to Parvati and turns into a householder. As a result, Shiva became a father and had three children. One of them is a girl child. Shiva and Parvati came across a tree known as Kalpavriksha. Parvati used to feel very lonely. So, she asked for a daughter from the wish fulfilling tree to get rid of her loneliness. Her wish was granted and Ashok was born. She was then named Ashok Sundari by Parvati.
Ashok Sundari was present at the time when her brother Ganesha was beheaded. Ashok Sundari got frightened by Shiva’s anger and hid behind a bag of salt. When Parvati came to know about it, she became very angry and cursed Ashok Sundari to become a part of salt. Later when Ganesha's head was restored by Shiva, Parvati and Shiva revived their daughter and calmed her. Ashoka Sundari was to marry Nahusha of the lunar dynasty. A raksha tried to abduct her but she escaped and cursed the demon that he will be killed by her husband. Ashoka Sundari and Nahusha got married in presence of Sage Vashistha.
Significance
Although Ashok Sundari is very less mentioned in hindu mythology, but she is associated with salt without it food is tasteless. She is often called Okha and salt is not purchased in the month of Chaitra in her memory.
