[edit]From Vulgar Latin *pagenses, from Late Latin pāgēnsis (“inhabitant of a district”), from Latin pāgus (“village; district”). Compare Friulian paîs, Romansch pajais, Italian paese, Venetian pajès, Catalan país, French pays, Portuguese país, Spanish país.
