Borrowed from Classical Persian خالی (xālī), from Arabic خَالٍ (ḵālin). Compare Assamese খালী (khali), Bengali খালি (khali), Malayalam കാലി (kāli), Sylheti ꠈꠣꠟꠤ (xáli), Telugu ఖాళీ (khāḷī), Hindi ख़ाली (xālī).
