"Listen! I will be honest with you, I do not offer the old smooth prizes..."
- Walt Whitman

I review books here on goodreads as my fashion-conscious bibliophilic alter ego, "Lark Benobi." Come follow or friend me on my lark benobi page. if you like. I visit this page so infrequently that I won't be accepting friend requests here.

Now and then I'll be leaving reviews on goodreads as "Claire Oshetsky" but only for those books that have influenced me as a writer.

People keep asking me whether the child in the novel Chouette is meant to represent an autistic child, or a trans child, or an autistic trans child, or some other kind of child. The book is fiction. The child in the novel is an owl.

Other people ask me what "Poor Deer," the titul

Claire Oshetsky added a status update: I made a new author foto for the paperback publication of Poor Deer. I wore a purple shirt and purple spectacles so it would blend with the bold purple-and-orange Poor Deer cover. I've changed the profile pic here on Goodreads to be this latest foto, too. Now I'm wondering why authors don't always make new author fotos to match their book jackets when a new book comes out. Seems like something I would do, anyway.
Claire Oshetsky added a status update: The novel I'm working on at the moment has turned out, in part, to be a meditation on some of my favorite John Cheever stories. What an extraordinary writer. It constantly amazes me that he is thought of these days, if he is remembered at all, as someone who wrote about the vagaries of upper middle class suburban alcoholics and bad marriages. His stories are so varied, and so surreal, and so perfect.

I re-read this novel in preparation for writing a scene in my novel Poor Deer, one that involves a car, plus some intense emotions.

I don't know a lot of writers personally but the ones I do know seem to write very differently from the way I write. T

The second of two writing projects I'm working on just now is a small dark book of psychological terror, like, scarier than what I think I'm able to write but maybe not.

“I prefer to speak in metaphor: That way, no logic can trap me, and no rule can bind me, and no fact can limit me or decide for me what’s possible.”
Claire Oshetsky, Chouette

“Housekeeping is nothing more than a losing encounter with entropy”
Claire Oshetsky, Chouette

“I begin to understand what a gift I've been given, to have been chosen for this task. The truth overwhelms me, and humbles me. The birds are telling me that my life's work, as your mother, will be to teach you how to be yourself- and to honor however much of the wild world you have in you, owl-baby- rather than mold you to be what I want you to be, or what your father wants you to be.”
Claire Oshetsky, Chouette
