Very traditional whodunnit with a dozen characters -- in this case, members of a high school drama club -- trapped on an island with a murderer.

I would have liked a little more character development, particularly of the "detective" slacker boy. His transformation from goomba to bright, confident authority figure seems abrupt and unconvincing without more explanation than first exposure to crime.

Overall it was an entertaining first installment of a mystery series, and I look forward to seeing more of the friendship between the two main characters, which here is years old but lacks detail.

A manga about a serial murder case, which is based on/pays homage to The Phantom of the Opera! What more can I ask for?

Many years ago The Opera House Murders offered me the first taste from the Kindaichi Case Files series, the chilling murders and the heartbreaking ending of this murder mystery will always stay in my mind.

Although I must admit after re-reading this story, I found some of the plot twists are a bit unrealistic and cliched, and the murderer had relied too heavily on coincidences. Plus the artwork is just...okay-ish for the most part. =__=

While very much sticking with the Phantom of the Opera theme, the story also seems to have been very heavily inspired by Yukito Ayatsuji’s The Decagon House Murders, a classic Japanese locked-room murder mystery novel. Would’ve given three stars, save for all the annoying fanservice scenes, particularly the ones involving deceased victims. Could’ve definitely done without those.

one of the best things about this was the mini crossword you had to do to discover an important clue about the identity of the lead suspect. i’m sold!

POR FIN POR FIN POR FIN

Nice to meet you Kindaichi.

When the rehearsal for "Phantom of the Opera" is going on the cast members die like how the characters they are playing die. He has to use the detective skills his grandfather the famous detective Kousuke Kindaichi to solve the mystery of who is killing the actors.

Response:
I love this series. I just love rereading them over again. I have read this book twice now and I still love it.I love the mystery involved in the volume not to mention I personally love the opera "Phantom of the Opera". I also love the anime for this manga. If there is a manga then chances are there is an anime for the series. The animes go along with the mangas pretty well. I would recommend this series to those who love to read mystery and who wants to solve one.

The Kindaichi Case Files to nie... detective Conan a ka Case Closed.
To zresztą ciekawy przypadek niesłusznej pomyłki.

An ex-licensee from Tokyopop. I looked at the price in the US store and it took me by surprise. Ah, well.

Thanks for licensing this, but I'm not able to support the release directly, so I'll wait patiently. Thanks for writing this... Kanari? Is that his last name?

I learned about this being connected to another mystery series, but it's more like a famous descendant sharing traits of the 1st detective. It's quite an interesting volume. A story I regarded as a story with traits like a slasher film got treated like a cursed play. Like that Scottish play. The mystery was pretty interesting, and there's a trick with time that's quite interesting. Set time early, then trick someone into revealing themselves via telling people there's a trap.

I recommend checking this out if you like mystery stories. I found no option for digital versions, but I will welcome a digital edition warmly.

I've been a fan of the anime since years & finally I've decided to read the iconic opera house murder case files. As i was reading it, i was visualising the episode where all this happened. I can surely say that kindaichi shonen no jikenbo is far better than detective conan or any other mystery anime really, it's THAT good.

Mystery/Horror fans give this a try, you won't be dissapointed!!

It was ok. I might have liked it more when I was younger. If I come across more of the series for cheap in the future I might pick them up because a lot of manga ends up being a fast read, but there are other series I want to read more. light and easy way to spend an hour or so.

Fun shin honkaku manga murder mystery. I was pleasantly surprised that the mystery and plot were different from the episode of the recent live action adaptation but I could have done without the graduitous sexualisation of the murder victims.

Old series, that had a character with Sherlock characteristics. Hoping can get more of this series library only had 2 volumes. Also content warning for death scenes and brief nudity. Also suicide trigger warning.

Preposterous nonsense, but the BEST preposterous nonsense. This series is pure catnip for anybody who read ‘And Then There Were None...’ and thought, “I would like to read a variation on this dozens of times over, but every crime should hinge on planning and timing set finer than a Swiss watch”.

Hajime Kindaichi is the grandson of a famous detective (and I think this might be the only volume where he doesn’t swear on his grandfather’s name to solve a case), but is the classic ‘bored with school because too smart’ archetype. He has his childhood friend Miyuki to stick up for him and she functions as the romantic tension and, to a certain extent, as his Watson as they end up embroiled in murder after murder.

This time, through ridiculous happenstance they find themselves trapped on an island in a hotel fashioned after an opera house practicing for a production of Phantom of the Opera while a real-life phantom lurks behind the scenes. The bodies pile up as Kindaichi tries to solve the mystery.

I love this series. Love it. This first volume wobbles a little, it’s got a lot more ‘have some nudity and panties because you might go read something else’ than later volumes, but the fundamentals are there. Detective Kenmochi, long-suffering sidekick, is introduced and gets completely upstaged at every turn (as he should, it’s not HIS book).

The murder is presaged by a horrible (and insane, seriously it is absolutely crackers here) tragedy in the past and the killer, though doing vile misdeeds, always has a slightly sympathetic lens cast on them. The murders and solution make sense but obviously could never work in the real world.

You could do an entire drinking game with just this series because it has a formula that it uses pretty much every single story. It’s not one that I really tire of though - mysteries are popular for a reason, and Kindaichi IS a great character when he gets going.

I’d say that Case Closed is better written and has better art, but I would read a Kindaichi Case File over the former any day of the week. I really wish they’d start translating them into English again...

The Opera House Murders introduces us to Hajime Kindaichi, deceptively smart grandson of a famous detective and under-achieving best friend of straight-A student Miyuki Nanase. An isolated retreat for a drama club practice already darkened by the recent suicide of the former lead gets even more tragic when guest start dying in a similar manner to the play they're rehearsing - The Phantom of the Opera.

This is a murder mystery with all the classical trimmings. Our cast and the setting is slowly established to start and then from the first strike on it's a tense race to figure everything out and stop the killings. The various layers to the story and twists to the mystery are extremely well done and all integrated together flawlessly. And while there are pieces of the motive not revealed until the end there are clues and a good chunk of it all is solvable as you read. Add in a carefully developed dark and dangerous atmosphere and a smart adversary and it all comes together quite impressively. There is a fair bit of exposition towards the end, but it's presented well and is needed to unravel all the cleverly connected elements of the solution.

The art is detailed, clean, and easy to follow. This is all extremely important for a mystery, where establishing clues, characters and even the geography of their surroundings can all be vital to having the plot unfold properly.

I've always loved a good mystery, and Kanari and Sato's manga about a deceptively bright high school student descended from a famous detective is a wonderful collection of them. The Kindaichi Case Files is a fantastic series and The Opera House Murders gets us off to a great start.

This book was AMAZING! The way the mystery was plotted was excellent, and the pictures inside looked like snapshots from the movie (if they made one). I give praise to Kanari Yozaburo for an excellent plot, and Fumiya Sato for great art. My friend insisted I read this, and this has probably been one of the best pieces of advice I've been given. But like a cigarette, it's addictive. Once my eyes read page one, I couldn't stop.

Hajime Kindachi is well known for being a first class loser. His grades suck, and he has no friends, except for his childhood friend, Miyuki Nanase, a popular girl at school with high grades. And, Miyuki has a little crush on Hajime, so it's no surprise that when her drama group is invited to an isolated island for a chance at preforming, she decideds to ask Hajime to tag along as well.

But the group's expected fun is turned upside down when suddenly, there is a a great storm, which means they aren't getting off the island for some time, and someone is murdered. Hajime and Miyuki immediately begin investigatiing the case. Who is the murderer? This is a great book for all you mystery lovers out there. But be advised. It's not for readers younger than 12, because it contains intense, realistic graphics and images that might scare the lights out of you!

Once again, I'd like to thank Kanari Yozaburo and Fumiya Sato for creating such an intense, racing book.

I'm going to go ahead and type this so I can get it off my chest.
There are times when I get sort of a chill when I'm reading a book but there was a scene that I remember that sort of scared me. I couldn't stop staring at it. It's where the mask was outside of the window "looking in" in the middle of the night. Dude. She screamed. I would've screamed, too.

I haven't seen or read 'The Phantom of the Opera' but I have a lot of friends that really enjoyed it. One of my friends actually cosplayed as the phantom. After reading this, I am sort of interested and think that I would enjoy knowing a bit of the background while reading more about it.

I think that I read this right after the first volume of 'Case Closed' and I enjoy reading stuff like this. Of course, there were tons of characters and then one by one they were dying. There weren't that many characters that died like I thought it would. There were a certain few. I didn't know that this was a series until I finished the book but I'm glad to see that I've read the first one. HAHA. Lucky.

It was pretty good. The drawings weren't too bad. I would be happy to read another one of these.

Tagline andalannya:
'Kupertaruhkan nama Kakekku'

Merged review:

I was really impressed with this one! This being my first foray into mystery à la manga, I really do think that this style of storytelling really fits the subject matter. I'm eager to carry on with the series and see if my opinion changes.

Kindaichi is your typical underachiever, he skips school, never pays attention when he does show up and is something of a class clown. But he would do anything for his best friend. When she begs him to come with her drama class to a secluded island to rehearse for their upcoming production of "Phantom of the Opera", he can't say no. Pretty soon though, things turn deadly as cast mates begin dying just like the characters in Leroux's book do... it's up to Kindaichi to solve the murders before there is no one left on the island! It helps that he's the grandson of the most famed detectives....

This is one of my more memorable manga series. It goes along with Kindaichi, grand son of a famous detective, as murder seems to follow him at every turn. He's followed by his childhood friend (whom he won't admit he loves) and though he's really lazy, he's also smart, and ends up solving the case. He gets help from the cops too (or rather, they get help from him). It's like a mystery tv show but on paper, which is what I love the most about it. Only one other manga series I know can imitate the suspense from a tv show, and thats the Monster series. I wish my public library has all the books to this series!

What can I say? I love Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo. I keep hoping with the advent of digital books that someone will localize the remaining stacks and stacks of Kindaichi stories, but until then, I have to go back and re-read the old stuff after years of not seeing it so that it's somewhat new to me even if I still remember who the killer is.

I wish that more was made of the fact that Kindaichi is a genius, but for some reason doesn't do well in school. It's mentioned here, but it doesn't seem to come up in later volumes.

Wish that my local library had this series. This is a very popular manga mystery series about a teenager who has Holmesian abilities though many of his teachers and classmates assume he's stupid. This book has him joining the drama club as they go out to a desolate island to practice for nationals. However, the drama club has a problem. One of their members committed suicide and now someone is trying to get even. This is framed around the Phantom of the Opera which the drama club is performing.
