Strangers in Death

Rate this book
In 2060 New York, some murders still get more attention than others, especially those in which the victim is a prominent businessman, found in his Park Avenue apartment, tied to the bed—and strangled with cords of black velvet. Fortunately, homicide cop Lieutenant Eve Dallas's billionaire husband, Roarke, happens to own the prime real estate where Thomas Anders's sporting-goods firm is headquartered, giving her some help with access. Before long, she's knocking on doors—and barging through them—to look for the answers she needs.

But some things don't add up—and everyone's alibi checks out, from the wife who was off in the tropics to the nephew who stood to inherit millions. Was this a crime of passion—or a carefully planned execution? It's up to Dallas to solve this sensational case in which those who seem to be intimates sometimes guard secrets from each other—and strangers may be connected in unexpected, and deadly, ways. . . .

This was a reread of book 26 in the series and I really had forgotten just how good these middle of the series books are!

There are so many quotable moments mostly between Roarke and Eve, but Peabody and Eve get a lot of humour going as well. There is a very romantic proposal which nearly steals the whole book. Galahad still does not get the bacon. Eve actually manages to buy a can of Pepsi from the vending machine.

And of course there is a dead body and the hunt is on for the murderer. I enjoy the fact that Eve has settled down now about letting Roarke help in the police work. In fact she is quite quick to ask for his help on many occasions. They work together very well and it means we get to see a lot more of Roarke. Which is a good thing.

It seems I never get tired of this series and I can quite happily sit and read one of the books straight through in one afternoon.

4.5 stars.

I feel I should just mark each future book 4 or 5 stars (without having read them). Honestly, I know I sound like a broken record but I don't know how this author has held my attention for 26 fecking books and I am still loving them. Eve. My girl crush. I love her. The way her mind works to solve the case, with the help of the usual suspects! Roarke, sigh!

Eve is never arrogant. She doubts herself on some cases. Some of the cases bring her back to her childhood, a tough time in her life. But she has Roarke by her side and Peabody and her other colleagues who will stand by her through thick and thin.

I think I am at least more than halfway through the series, so that is something!

The good thing about this series is that the author is always changing up how we are presented with each mystery. In some books, we immediately know who the killer is and we even get to see his POV. And, usually the killer has a super creepy POV with some very sick thoughts going through his head.

*shudder* ....sooo creepy..

In other books, we have to try and figure out who the killer is, but sometimes it's just way too obvious.

hmmm... I wonder who it could be..

Sometimes, the killer is right in front of our faces and we don't figure it out until the end.

did that coke machine just curse at me? Stupid technology!

In this book, we have another formula where Eve is pretty sure she knows who did it, but can't prove it. She has to do a lot of digging to get to the bottom of this case and it's pretty cool. It gives a nod to the old Alfred Hitchcock films and seems to have the formula of one of them going.

got that right, Al!

The negative thing about this book is how unlikable Eve is. She rubbed me the wrong way in some of the earlier books, but eventually grew on me. And then, in this one, she becomes such a raging bitch that I really wanted someone to hurt her. I get that she's a "hardass" cop, but it was super OTT - to the point of unprofessional. Plus, she is kind of stupid. She has no idea of who Alexander Hamilton is - not an inkling. Like, never even heard of him. Really? I can see that if you are not from the USA, or if you are really young - maybe. No, not even then, because we learn about him in grade school. So, even if we are not quite sure what he did, we all are at least familiar with the name of one of our founding fathers.
And, so I say, once again: what in the hell does Roarke see in her?

Another fun episode in J.D. Robb's fabulous murder mystery series with its perfect mix of mystery, humour, romance, great characters and clever devious plots. This time NYPD Lt Eve Dallas is dealing with a murder where's she's pretty sure she knows who killed the victim but proving it is near impossible. Staged as an illicit kinky sex tryst gone wrong, the suspect has a perfect alibi, but Eve is just not buying it. With the help of her police partner Peabody as well as her heartthrob of a husband, she has to dig deep into the suspect's past and even then it's her ability to make connections and never stop thinking about her work that will help lead to work out how the suspect did it, but will she be able to prove it?

A good man, a loyal husband is killed. Was he a good man or was he a monster?
Damn, this book is one of my favorites. Eve suspected/knew from the beginning who was the villain. But no evidence and perfect alibi. And only Eve's feeling and small pieces of truth. Excellent written, excellent.
I flove psychological approach, game of minds and a highly intelligent murderer.

Eve - best woman ever!!!

Finally a good turn in Louise and Charles' relationship. I couldn't understand how she coped with his 'job'. Finally a good turn! 😊

Eve and Roarke's fight about money made me laugh.
Eve is 100% opposite of a gold-digger.
Roarke won his biggest prise with his incredible wife! ❤

I. LOVED. IT.

Am I driving you all crazy with my 5 star reviews? I just can't seem to find flaws with these books. They are worthy of either 4 or 5 stars from me. ❤

Another fabulous addition to the series and kudos to J.D. Robb for keeping my attention and desire to read on.

One of my favorite moments in this book didn't even belong to Eve and Roarke!!!! And this is another wonderful thing about this series. Such great secondary characters. :)

I just love Eve & Roarke so much. <3

She tilted her head back to look at him. “I saw you, and that’s all it took. Sometimes I can’t breathe, I love you so much.”
“Eve.” Emotion deepened his eyes as he kissed her, very sweetly, then he just rested his brow against hers.
“I keep thinking, well, this’ll settle down. It’s bound to level off and settle down. But it doesn’t. Even when things are just going smooth and we’re just…living, I can look at you, and I’ve got no breath left.”
“Every minute with you, I’m alive. I never knew before there were pieces of me unborn, just waiting for you. I’m alive with you, Eve.”
She sighed, touched his cheek. “We’d better get out of here. We’re getting mush all over the pool.”

The body of Thomas Anders was found in his bedroom, tied up and slowly strangled by a cord. The scene is set up to look like Anders was entertaining someone while his wife was out of town when their sex games went wrong. But Lt. Eve Dallas sees something else and immediately knows who is behind the murder. Unfortunately, she has no evidence. Now Eve and her team must dig to find how a person who has an airtight alibi could commit this murder.

This addition to the In Death series was a little different. Since Eve figured out who was behind the murder very early in the story, she must figure out exactly how it was done. I thought the pacing of this story was pretty good. We don't get a lot of character growth in this one, but the story was very entertaining. My rating: 5 Stars.

Another solid entry in the series. There seems to be two approaches with this series. A) Reveal the guilty party or parties early (about one third of the way through the book) and the remainder is how Dallas captures them and proves them guilty. B) A slower build up to the reveal (about two thirds of the way through the book) with a few red herrings thrown in, allowing the reader to figure out whodunit for themselves.

This book takes the first approach. While that is fine, I'd rather be challenged to use my brain and see if I can figure stuff out. That's not to say that this wasn't an enjoyable book, it was; but sometimes a little mystery would be nice.

What still drives these books for me is the interaction between the characters as opposed to what small mystery there may be in each book. There's a level of smartassness that just makes these books enjoyable. How many murder mysteries have you read where you laugh at various points in the book? You'll do that with this series.

Twenty-six books in and I'm more addicted to this series than ever which is really saying something! Strangers in Death is a bit of a different case for Eve because she knows almost immediately who the killer is but has absolutely zero evidence to prove it. Eve has excellent instincts and she knows when someone is lying to her but they have an airtight alibi that Eve simply can't break. The deeper she digs the more she knows she's right but she still doesn't have enough to convince a jury. Could this be the one who gets away? Not if Eve and her team have anything to say about it they won't.

I will admit I'd guessed the twist to this story pretty early on but that didn't lower my enjoyment of watching Eve, Peabody and the others digging into the life of their suspect as they worked so hard to build a case against them. And the joy of seeing Eve kick butt in interviews just never gets old either. Throw in the romance between Eve and Roarke, the fun and colourful side characters and a huge new development for Charles and I couldn't put this book down. It always amazes me how quickly I devour the books in this series and I'm already dreading the day when I have to start waiting for new releases like everyone else. Luckily I still have about 20 books (plus extra novellas!) before I get to that point.

One of the best books in this series had a murder that stumped Eve until she followed her gut and zeroed in on the why and then the how followed. As always Roarke serves as the Consultant Civilian and proves to be more than Eve's sex toy. We also get to see Baxter and Truelove assist, but it is really Eve's show.

When the victim of a murder with sexual overtones turns out to be a wealthy businessman whose image is as a sporting-goods good guy, the press goes bonkers. This guy has a rep for his charitable works involving poor kids and their families. To say people are shocked by his mode of death is an understatement. As Eve peels the layers, she just doesn't see the connection between the life Thomas Anders lived and the dark way he died.

Everyone with even a small reason to want him dead is alibied up. So, Eve starts digging where her gut tells her and finally cracks the case with the help of her team.

Maybe it's because I've read about 22 of these in a row, but the "spark" is starting to die a bit. GASP! I mean, I still LOVE these books, but I feel like the last few haven't had enough at stake emotionally for the main characters. The conflict in their relationship really drove the first dozen or so. I'm hankering for some head-butting between the two leads so they can "make up" after, hehe. :)

Something big happening here between Charles and Louise:)

Now about the crime, not complicated at all. We knew who done it very early on, only Eve had a bit problem to gather the evidence, but the way she work on it? From Roarke's eyes? I can understand why he is truly, deeply, madly in love to her! Heh:))

I want my Eve too if I fancy a bit of a girl! LOL:))

This time we pretty much knew who did it from the beginning. But, there is no evidence and a rock solid alibi. Awesome, as always, to watch Eve work it. I am SO addicted to this series!!!

Ava is character that you can hate, period. Suzanne is a character that you can both pity and dislike.

Some good bantering between Eve and Peabody about superior lays - love that scene.

A great quote is near the end when Ava says that Eve married for money, Eve replied "I married a man. The man!" Love that quote.

Strangers in Death
4 Stars

When a wealthy business man is found dead in his bed, Lieutenant Eve Dallas soon narrows down the focus to one suspect. Unfortunately, this person has an ironclad alibi and Eve will have to pull out all the stops to prove her case.

While the title of the book reveals the main plot points as well as the identities of the culprits, it is still entertaining to follow along as Eve and her team work out their theory, gather the evidence and catch the killer.

The ongoing character and relationship development is excellent with Eve and Roarke confronting a realistic obstacle in their marriage, i.e., money, and Charles Monroe and Louise DiMatto coming to a turning point in their romance.

Overall, an entertaining addition to the series with an engaging Columbo-like investigation and some sweet interactions between the characters.

”Shouldn’t you be upstairs buying Alaska?” (Eve)
“I did that last week.” (Roarke)

So Roarke!!! LOL

Oh, I love, love, love these books! The mystery is Always different and so very intriguing and every time differently done. Sometimes we know the killer, sometimes we don't know who he/she is until the very last page, sometimes we suspect, sometimes we doubt... and here Eve knows, but she doens't have proof!

Spoilers ahead

A good man is killed in a way that brings shame to his name and humiliated his supposedly grieving widow, but as Dallas unravels the threads in this case she finds the widow isn't quite what she seemed. Two married women, one weak and one strong hatch an inconceivable plot to murder their husbands

Even though the romance isn't as strong in this one as others in this series I enjoyed this one for the plot. I too hated the widow for her greedy and callous disregard for human life. I was quite pleased to see her knocked off her pedestal

Strangers in Death by J.D.Robb is the 26th book in the In Death series. Eve investigates the murder of a prominent sports tycoon in what appears to be a sex crime. The title of the book gives away the solution but does not detract from the enjoyment of it. I love that we catch up with all the characters and this time Charles and Louise make a special announcement. Another fabulous book in the series.

This one's intriguing. Although at 30 percent mark Eve knows who the killer is or who conspired to have him killed. The problem is how to prove it. The killer planned it for months but s/he did not plan on Eve taking the case.

The last part was quiet a show. Oh and I am so happy for Louise and Charles. 😃

11/30/2020 Eve is assigned to investigate the murder of a sports equipment and clothing purveyor whose headquarters is located in Roarke’s tower. Tommy Anders was found in his bedroom, naked, with several, um, implements for personal pleasure, tied up and obviously asphyxiated by the rope around his neck. His wife, Ava, who was in St. Lucia on a girlfriend’s trip, claims he had been exploring alternative sexual practices for a couple of years; and being in St. Lucia, was clearly not in New York killing her husband. Eve looks hard at her because she “just doesn’t like her.”

Anders’s other heir is his orphaned nephew, Ben, whom he raised like a son. Roarke had been slightly acquainted with both Anders men slightly and liked them both. Eve learns that Anders had been a decent, generous man who had donated money and equipment to less privileged children and had set up scholarships. His clothes and belongings were casual, if somewhat conservative. Everything she learns causes her to question the conclusions induced by the crime scene.

Just about all the recurring characters appear. There’s a humorous bit with Eve and Feeney: Eve goes to Feeney’s office to talk about the case and finds him sick as a dog with a cold/flu and she sends him home. Feeney accuses her of “turning into a woman on him.” 😂 Peabody makes a solo appearance on Nadine’s news show; of course she’s nervous and frets about what to wear. Charles and Louise announce his retirement as a “licensed companion” and their upcoming marriage; Roarke offers their gardens for a spring wedding.

4 solid stars.

I read this one recently while traveling out of the country, which is why I didn't write a review immediately. It isn't the best of the series, but still a solid installment.
