Happy new Saga day to those who celebrate!
On one hand I love having these bite-sized Saga treats once a month to look forward to and see how everyone’s adventures are holding up (or abruptly ending in gratuitous violence), on the other hand we are only getting small chunks of a larger trajectory so occasionally you are only getting scenes bridging from one point to the next. Which is fine, I think the storytelling for this series is phenomenal but it does make it difficult to rate on and issue to issue basis because it’s not intended to stand alone but be the flow of a larger context. Issue 64 revisits some old friends from the last volume (I love frog dude accusing Gale of being racist and am also glad Gale has been a large role in these recent volumes) and shows us the possible direction Alana’s story is going to take. But the big fun is Squire living up to his ACAB shirt he wore earlier this series. Not much happens but I’m looking forward to next month because there’s no way I’m going to not keep reading them the moment they drop.

Artwork ALWAYS on point with this series. Zero complaints ever.
Story was a lull here but nice to see we might be moving on again soon. I miss these guys having a home so looking forward to them settling somewhere for a bit.
Was cool to see some old friends again but damn I need to re-read this series again. I forget details so easily. I just remember that it makes me feel warm and fuzzy and then rips out my heart in a seemingly endless cycle.
Bring on the next one!

Well, aren't self-fulfilling prophecies a lot of fun? The answer to that is no, by the way, this is dreadful.
That being said, the way this issue gathered all the loose threads from the last couple of issues and started to unite them is satisfying. I just wish the portrait they start to form wasn't one so grim and gloomy.
All I can say now is that I hope it all ends quickly so that we won't agonize in pain for too long.

I loved Petrichor's hop home, and while the motives of some of our other players could be clearer, things might just be looking up for the little family. Just wait for the next issue to absolutely break my heart now...

Slowly, slowly building up to what I am sure is going to be a great climax! I am equally impatient for any new Saga crumbs but also wish I had the patience to wait til I could devour all the issues together for this latest installment. Amazing art as ever and Robot Jr is starting to show his dark side...da..da..da.....

Petrichor is so cool. I know we talked about revenge is bad and ever-consuming but can we get just a little bit revenge? Just for Petriochor? I just wanna see her go berserk with her armor and weapons. No? Maybe. Let's hope.
I've spend my morning catching up on Saga since I really don't have much to do other then the gym nowadays. I'm kinda in a free-sandbox summer until I find a job again and grad school starts so I'm naturally filling my time reading anything and everything.
Issue #64 brings us to Hazel and Squire on a mission to gather the alleged materials to bring their father's back from the dead until a mysterious constable finds them. According to him - it's simply narcotics that the lady has been scamming people with. Basically LSD to make you see stuff Ie. your dead father from the grave.
Remember how I said Squire is driven now? We definitely see that drive start to hit full throttle with his new founded mission to revive his dad, despite what others say.

Another solid installment.
I like the pieces that we're getting and how they're coming together. Squire is really interesting, and while I sort of forget issue to issue what's going on, because I read the first 8 trades or so together years ago, and now it's harder to hang onto the threads of the story....
I need to read it all again.
But now that I've derailed my thought process, I'm glad to see Petrichor back. I'm interested to see how things continue to move with Alana, and I'd really like to see more of the time skip we missed but I get that that's just not going to happen.

Fantastic, the little bro (Squire) finally said something. However, not much happened in this issue, and the cliffhanger isn't exciting enough to make me want to read the next one. Since there likely be more developments between #65 and #70, I will have to pick up this read in January 2024.

I do not want the 2023 run to be over... 😭 I thought #61 was way too short...or maybe not enough happened in the issue? But #62-64 have been absolutely incredible. I am terrified by what will happen to Squire and Petrichor. They both seem to be on paths of self-destruction after the death of Prince Robot. I saw a theory that the kids will run away from Alana..

Saga #64
The many storylines that have been simultaneously going on in the previous issues, continue here. Hazel and Squire are breaking into a building, in order to find what the lady who supposedly can bring their dad back to like asked for. There, they get stopped by a policeman, saying that this lady is using them, but Squire doesn't believe him. At the same time, Alana is trying to find a job, out of this planet, to be more safe. Gale is still trying to find Alana and her kids, but the frog that was with them in the pirate spaceship lies to him, in order to save time for them. Finally, in the last storyline, Petrichor is still seeking revenge, until she stumbles on her mom and instead she finds acceptance.
This was a very nice issue. The beginning is very surprising, because we finally see Squire talking. It's like he's finally finding himself again, thanks to the hope he has that they'll be able to bring Marco back to life. He's evolving into a very interesting and likeable character and I certainly want to see what he'll do in the following issues. Hazel is also evolving into her own unique character and I love that. I especially enjoy her narration of the whole story. Brian always writes that in a very beautiful and emotional way. Alana is also great to read. She's way more mature in these issues, than she was when the series started and this slow, but noticeable change is undoubtedly an incredible showcase of Brian K. Vaughan's amazing character development abilities. Furthermore, it continues to impress me how he's able to fit so many stories in a single issue, without making it feel too crowded or badly paced.
Overall, this was another great issue of "Saga", with very interesting developments in the story and, as always, amazing artwork by Fiona Staples.

Saga #64 (volume 11) features a terrific cover: That angry? determined? (beautiful) Petrichor image sets us up for possibly rash action. The issue includes the continuing tale of Hazel and Squire in their attempt to get Wormwood so they can possibly conjure up their dead parents. In the process they meet this fire-inside Halloween character. So good, this visual. Squire finally speaks, with some aggression, to this guy!
The central theme of the issue is this Hazel theory:
“Maybe the people who help us most in life recognize a missing piece of themselves in us, something that has to be protected, or else they’ll never be whole again.”
We’ll see how that works out.
Petrichor has a conversation for a few pages entirely in Blue, which is interesting.
Gale, searching for Alana, emerges as a central character in this arc. His confrontation with a frog guy, as he searched, is pretty funny.
Alana keeps looking for work and an opportunity to take her two kids off the planet and in the process cuts a deal with the ringmaster of a traveling circus. As you may recall, Alana has, among her many jobs, worked in “performance,” so this could be good for her and the kids. And fun for us! Escaping in disguise? But there’s this grim foreboding, from cover to the end:

The artwork remains consistently amazing, of course. Not much actually happens in the 25 pages or so of this single issue, but there is movement to bring several threads together.

I love the call back to the ‘a night time smoke romance’. I miss Marko a lot. And I really like that squire didn’t believe that fire pig. I don’t think the reincarnation magic is real but you never know. Maybe he’ll come back as a ghost like the teen with their guts hanging out-Izabel-that saved Marko and Alana before they met Petrichor for the first time; where they got their tree ship. I’m enjoying the story a lot especially Hazel’s worry or maybe even guilt that she’s still a little kid who can’t return the favor or ‘debt’ to all the adults who’ve helped her; she’s self conscious that she’s not as helpful or brave as she wished she could be.

More like a 4.5 than a true 5 because it's a filler for the upcoming events-- we need Alana somewhere else which is why she's taking this "not family friendly" (color me intrigued) circus job and Squire and Hazel have just been intercepted rather than possibly trying to get Marko resurrected from the dead.
But Petrichor is on the cover, you see her for a brief moment in a space/time continuum....
And I'll be waiting for the next installment.
