This is possibly the hottest shit I have ever read in my life. I am not joking. I am absolutely POWERLESS when it comes to describing what and how much this book made me feel.
See what I did there? hehe
So hot, so romantic, so well-written, SO ABSURD. I never CRY! And I cried, I CRIED HARD at the end.
The entire thing was emotional and wonderful and so so so so worth it.
MARK MY WORDS, THIS BOOK IS GOING TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
Elsie is Mozart of our generation and her work isonly going to get better from here and after this one? You can bet your life she will become an unstoppable phenomenon.
“it’s like she and i are tethered together, but she’s the strong one. the pillar. and when troubled waters wash me downstream, all i have to do is follow the rope that ties me back to her. it always leads me back to her.”
“you’re not just tattooed on my skin. you’re branded on my heart. woven into the fiber of my being. the most constant and reassuring person in my life. when i close my eyes, i see you. when you’re away from me, i dream about you.”
When we peek into the hallway seconds later, all backs are turned to us. Willa is down on all fours in the foyer, grasping at her stomach dramatically while Cade stands by, arms crossed, gruffly asking if she’s okay while trying not to roll his eyes. I’m momentarily confused. Because if I know Cade, he’s as protective as they come, and seeing the mother of his child down on the floor in pain would have him wild. Willa’s chin tips up in our direction, and she winks, before falling into another chorus of loud wails. “Please! I need a doctor!”
A few seats down Cade has his new baby girl, Emma, strapped to his chest in a carrier. He’s all proud papa, eyes more on that little bundle than on the game. It does weird things to my ovaries watching him. Willa is her usual playful self, sitting beside Luke trying to show him how to toss popcorn up in the air and catch it with his mouth. It just keeps hitting them both in the face.
“Easy, Tink,” the man says good-naturedly but a little teasing. “You’re gonna pop a blood vessel stomping around like that.”“Tink?” she shouts, pulling up about six feet from him, not at all affected by his good looks. He waves a hand over her casually. “Yeah. You’ve got this whole angry little Tinkerbell vibe happening. I dig it.”
“It’s dark and snowy! I don’t know the area. There could be wildlife! Driving slowly is safe so long as a back-forty hillbilly isn’t riding my ass in his small-dick truck, flashing his high beams at me.”
"It doesn’t matter that my love for him is pathetic and tragically unrequited. It just is. The sky is blue. The grass is green. And I’ve loved Jasper Gervais from the first day I laid eyes on him."
“Times have changed, Sloane. I’m not scared anymore. You’re not my fucking friend. You’re just mine.”
“Eighteen years ago, a little blonde girl peeked at me out of that exact window. She stared at me that day, and I stared back. I didn’t realize what it meant because we were just kids.”
She hums softly, twining her fingers with my free hand. Wrapping herself up in me like I’m her favorite blanket. And I indulge her because wrapped around Sloane is my favorite place to be. “You saw me?”
I turn my head in, my lips dusting across her forehead. “Yeah. I saw you, Sloane. I noticed you too. Didn’t know what made me look up there that day. Had no clue what it all meant.”
“What did it mean?”
“That when it comes to you, I’m powerless.”
“Do you think about me?” I blurt, watching him still the minute those words leap from my lips. “When we go weeks or months without talking or seeing each other . . . do you think about me?”
he finally responds with, “Every fucking day, Sunny."
“You’ll be here in the morning?” This is what she’s always asked me on bad nights. Like she wanted to make sure I wouldn’t drop too far into my sadness. So far I wouldn’t come back.
“Where else would I be?” is what I’ve always responded with as my hand slides over her damp hair. Because I will be.
"You’re the least scary thing in my life. You’re not just tattooed on my skin. You’re branded on my heart. Woven into the fiber of my being. The most constant and reassuring person in my life. When I close my eyes, I see you. When you’re away from me, I dream about you. When I need someone to lean on, you are always there for me. God. You’ve loved me when I haven’t even been able to love myself.”
