Chasing Seth

Rate this book
A True Mates Novel

Veterinarian Seth Davies comes to Senaka, Wyoming, looking for peace and anonymity, trying to escape his past. He’s always been a target for trouble and pain, and Seth has had more than his share of both. Kasey Whitedove takes one look at Seth and assumes the worst. No white man could love animals the way the mostly Cheyenne population expects, and Kasey makes Seth’s first days in Senaka more than unpleasant.

Then an accident puts Kasey in the uncomfortable position of eating crow—and helplessly desiring Seth—despite the danger of Kasey’s life as a werewolf and Seth’s stressful secrets. Chasing Seth down and keeping him safe from his past has just become Kasey's most important job.

If you want (Fill In The Blank) then you want to read this book.

If you want a premise with promise then you want to read this book.
Seth, a vet, comes to town to find his new beginning. Kasey, a wolf shifter and the town sheriff, is looking for his mate. A lot could have been done with this. A lot has been done with this...in other books.

It's clear that JR Loveless was trying to break some new ground. She came up with the idea of The Created. They're shifters who are not born but bitten. If they survive the bite they end up becoming psychotic wolves who apparently took some lessons from Charles Manson. I waited for the whole book for them to burst onto the scene, ripping out throats and giving people the crazy stink eye. It never happened.

Loveless also gives Seth a mystical, paranormal power that has him taking in negative energy and vomiting it up as black goop. Here's the thing, it's also mentioned that sometimes he has to bloodlet to get rid of the negative energy. Along with waiting for the Mansonite shifters, I waited for Seth to have to bloodlet. It would have been intense. It never happened.

I did a lot of waiting and it was all for naught. Opportunities lost? This book had them.

If you want Native American stereotypes then you want to read this book.
Kasey. Oh, I did not like Kasey. You see, Kasey is a racist and he hates white men. Who else, right? He hates them because they destroy the land and the animals that they will never understand.

Also, Kasey is repeatedly referred to and described as "the big Cheyenne".

For a hot second I expected Kasey to throw on a loincloth, some feathers and some mocassins so that he could go and chant around the fire. I mean, I figured if Kasey was going to be defined and stereotyped based on his race that the author would go for broke.

If you want characters crying, what seems like, continuously then you want to read this book.
I don't know when it happened but at some point Kasey and Seth started to spend every other page crying. These weren't small tears either. These were gut-wrenching, body shaking sobs.

I don't know how Seth stayed hydrated because he was vomiting and sobbing and barely eating. That man was a hot mess that should have shriveled up due to all of the fluids coming out of him.

If you want a WTF ending then you want to read this book.
The ending of this book was so random. It really did have nothing to do with anything and actually felt like a bit of a cop out. Now, I have the feeling there will be a sequel. Maybe the sequel will explain the out-of-nowhere ending to this book.

All in all...I don't know. I wanted to really like this book. Unfortunately, it's hanging onto those 2 stars by the skin of its teeth.

Re-read November 2016 - the audio is not bad (but not extremely good either)

Now this was some awful writing!
Let me tell you guys my favorite parts.

Kasey is native American and racist. But that’s okay, because you know, all white people are bad bad men.

There are werewolves. And because werewolves are magic, their clothes also magically disappear when they shift and appear when shifting back.
*whines* Why would the author do that??? It is not necessary for my guys to wear clothes. I am FINE with them running around naked. At least then we would have some of this.
description

What’s not to like?
But fine, they wear clothes. Party poopers.

I was also pretty surprised about the fact that these guys use NO LUBE AT ALL. Ouch.
description

Even though Seth was .

And the big love declaration…

“I love you too,” Seth said thickly.
“I’m sorry it took me so long to say it.”

Yes, Seth, what were you thinking, waiting a WHOLE WEEK after meeting Kasey?!

This book is also filled with terms like, the older man, his pup, the sheriff, his fragile mate. But my all-time favorite is this one:

Needing to see the evidence of his pup’s desire for him, he pulled the sheet away from them both and lifted up enough to see the weeping staff.

Am I the only one thinking of Harry Potter while reading this?
description

And now, the plot. The plot made absolutely no sense at all. I had a feeling the author just made it up as she went along. But that’s okay, it was fluffy goodness and I liked it.

Okay, kiddies, come closer so I may tell you all the things I learned from this story!
description

Gather around now, dear friends, as I tell you a romantic tale of werewolf shifters...
description

Now what did I learn, you ask?

1. I learned Native American werewolf shifters are racists who hate white people. 'Cause whitey be the devil, yo.
description

If the way Kasey treated him was any indication, they must be wonderful people to have raised a son like him. Aside from being prejudiced about white people.
Kasey blanched at the memory of his reaction to his mate being white, and he gave his pup a sincere, apologetic look. “They aren’t stupid assholes like I am,” he muttered. “They don’t care if you’re white, black, Asian, or even if you were purple. They only care that you’re my mate.”
Eyeing the taller man, Seth ignored the little voice telling him not to go and agreed.

2. Werewolves don't need to get naked, because their "magic" surrounds their clothes.
The world’s definition of werewolves was so skewed that Kasey could hardly believe how the legends had changed from life, light, and acceptance to horror, death, and blood. Their kind didn’t mutate and reshape like it was depicted in the movies. The magic caused them to take on another form by mere thought, their clothing hidden along with their human form by the gift of their kind. There was no tearing of cloth, no painful transformation, and certainly no brutal attack on humans.
description

3. Lube is not necessary. Lube is for pussies. Real werewolves use saliva.
description

4. The endearment "Pup" actually makes me cringe.
description

And finally...

5. Jeff Gelder can pretty much get me to listen to almost anything if this is any indication. Because, frankly, I would have probably marked this as DNF sometime around the 30% mark if it weren't for the wonderful vocal styling of Jeff Gelder.

Somehow Jeff made me keep listening, even through some pretty major eye rolls, because Jeff's the man. That's just how it is.
description

So yeah, I had fun, and I owe it all to Jeff Gelder.

So yeah Kasey was a racist asshole. And they cry a lot. And Seth was Too stupid to live at the end. And the sex was stale/boring/repetitive. And somethings didn't make sense. And the instant love/acceptance seemed unnatural even for a fictional book about gay werewolves.

But I still liked it. It put an interesting twist on things and wasn't the same old gay werewolf book. It kept me entertained from the beginning until the end. Sure it would have been nice if Kasey wasn't such a racist and so mean but he was pretty sweet by the end.

I probably would have given it five stars except for how Seth treated his dog. it was just left all alone at his house sometimes for days at a time where it just had to shit on the floor and hope it didn't run out of water.

Even though Kasey's brother seems like an even bigger jackass than Kasey I am looking forward to the next book cause i really liked Nick (assuming Nick's book is next)

The tortured tragic hero who needs his alpha to lean on, who can be strong himself, but desperately needs to be loved––that's totally my kink. Seth is beautiful and fragile and has been horribly abused. Kasey is big and strong and sexy and is a jerk at first but he was raised to believe a certain way about born werewolves vs. created ones. When he finds out that his concern does not apply to his mate, he reverses his mindset and works very hard to get Seth to accept him. And of course his mate will forgive him because really, Kasey is everything he needs. The pacing of the book, the feeling, the love between the characters and the promise that Seth's buddy Nick and Kasey's brother Thayne are going to have a wild ride as well makes this a great start to a series. Seth and Kasey are a wonderful addition to shifter romance.

So this book was good. After looking at several reviews I knew what to expect so I was excited going in after holding off for so long. Am I glad I read this? Yes, definitely. It's a really good book, but it wasn't amazing. I just didn't fall in love with it the way I do other books.

There are a few scenes in this that I know people won't like. It involves animals and yeah, it's pretty graphic. So people should be warned if they can't read that type of violence.

I really liked Seth. He'd been through so much already and then to have Kasey act the way he did... It was really hard to like Kasey at first. But he changed and he was really good to Seth and they did work as a couple, though it took a lot for them to get their HEA. After all, the past was still there and Seth had to deal with those demons.

The whole Nick and Thayne drama that will lead into the second book made me really, really nervous about Forgiving Thayne. I'm prepared for angst and drama and I don't know how I'll end up feeling about that one. I started preparing myself after finding out everything that was going on.

So would I recommend this book? Yes! But if you don't like shifters or darker books then I would avoid this one.

I love m/m romance. I enjoy it as a break from reading hetero pairings. So when a story like "Chasing Seth" makes me cringe and re-read the book description to make sure that I didn't choose f/f, there's a problem.

This is my first book from this author. I hope that this was a fluke and their writing surpasses this. Because the ideas were solid. The execution...eh, not so much. From the supposed Alpha male crying while making love, to men calling each other "babe" for nicknames or the long, DRAWN out love scenes (with crying and emotions and blah, blah, BLAH, I just couldn't take it. I skimmed through a lot of this book because I thought that maybe the first half of the story would catch up somewhere in the middle, to return to being interesting again. But alas, it didn't.

I love m/m werewolf pairings. And one of the men is Native American...which is not prominent in m/m and I looked forward to reading.

TWO STARS - the extra star is for the cover which is the best part of the book.

I liked the idea for this story - two men destined to be together but having to overcome the odds to do so. I liked that they had to not only overcome external trouble, but to deal with conflict between them too. This wasn't a simple case of 'you're destined to be my mate so we must be together', rather both men are not initially attracted to each other.

It is a story of wolf shifters so there is some background to learn about the pack, or in this case, packs. Kasey, the alpha-male sheriff, is Cheyenne. He is son of the alpha and part of a larger pack. Seth is white and comes to town as the vet. He is running from his past and has no one apart from his good friend Nick.

The story starts as we learn of Seth's special healing qualities. I did have a flashback to The Green Mile and then later a bit of a Twilight Eclipse flash when a broken leg was healing. Seth and Kasey get off on the wrong foot with prejudices keeping them apart. Kasey makes some incorrect assumptions and Seth has been hurt in the past so is not prepared to trust Kasey. The story balances some action with Kasey and Seth learning about each other and coming to terms with their destiny.

There is a lot of sentimentality and I felt a slight repetitiveness plus at some points the story felt a little forced, not flowing naturally. Acknowledging that Seth had a traumatic past, I still found him too weak and needy at times and his reactions were all over the place.

Probably being a bit picky here but I also disliked all the changing of terms the two men used to address each other. Seth was referred to a Seth, the vet, his mate, pup....and Kasey was the big man, sheriff, the Cheyenne, his mate....

I acknowledge that I am much more a fan of contemporary romance and don't read a lot of paranormal romance. It is a genre I throw in every now and then for variety. Therefore, my personal taste may naturally rate these books a little lower, purely due to subject matter.

So overall I enjoyed this story, I just found a few things that niggled at me. A true fan of paranormal romance may find these easier to overlook and enjoy this book more than I did.

Note: there are a couple of scenes that I did not like involving mutilation of pet dogs. I understood where this fit with the plot but didn't like the gruesome descriptions. So be warned if you are sensitive to this type of thing.

I now publish all my m/m reviews on my blog so if you want to see all my m/m reviews in one place come visit at Because Two Men Are Better Than One!

Well, I read it, and I noticed a few similarities to Touch Me Gently.
The smaller, abused, weepy man ( in this case "pup", please, he's a vet, an adult ,not 12!) and the strong, big alpha just waiting to fix everything for him!
Enough others have mentioned the bigoted attitude of one of the MC and his brother, I keep wondering where it came from, their parents didn't seem to feel the same way.
It wasn't bad, just not really good either.
I am predicting a sequel between Nick and the brother! :)

You ever read a book and ask yourself dang why did it take me so long to read it? Well this is how I felt about this book. It really had me hooked from the beginning to the end. I love how we found everything out the same time as everyone else. It had me on the edge of my seat the whole book. I enjoyed how J.R did her wolf world it was different but still enjoyable. I loved Kasey and Seth together. They were perfect for each other. I really do enjoy J.R's writing style. I can't wait for her next book to come out:-)

Though this book is quite predictable, offers up a somewhat original story in the gay PNR genre. It still contains the same formula that is most shifter books; finding one’s destined mate and overcoming a series of obstacles. I enjoyed all the characters, and I really am hoping it will become a spectacular series.

Seth Davies is trying to make a new life after enduring extreme torture and abuse from his past. He moves to the quiet town of Senaka, Wyoming in hopes of finally having a life. Where he can be a great veterinarian and let his wolf run free without being discovered and hurt. However, living in Senaka comes with a bit of prejudice, being a white man in Cheyenne territory but the people have been good, and Seth is hoping to make his life there.

Problems arise when he finally meets the town sheriff, and the hate is strongly coming off in waves for Seth. Kasey the town sheriff dislikes the white man, and its killing him to seek help from the Vet. Kasey does not hide his prejudices and Seth is starting to feel as if things won’t be as easy as he imagined. However, faith will have a role in bringing both men together and the journey will not be easy.

I really did enjoy this story. It was a sweet, and kept the suspense coming. It moves quite well, but I felt the book could have been just as good with less pages. After awhile I felt as if it was just dragging on, and became a repetition of it-self. I did like the MCs (main characters) but my interest is piqued by a relationship that feels up coming. I am really hoping for a second book.

The sex, I thought it was average based on the amount. When actual intercourse happens at almost 50% through the book, ‘in no way is that too much sex’. The discrimination part of the book might be offensive to some readers, and Kasey might come off as a racist, but I believe him to be misinformed. You can blame it one the ‘single story’ that Kasey had of the white people.

Overall, an easy and light read about shifters. A creepy stalker and that of love conquering all, and a sweet HEA. The ending leaves you in hope for a sequel and possibly a wonderful series about the wolves finding their destined mates.

Seth Davies is a man looking for peace. Raised to believe he and his family are the only ones of his kind, his naivety lands him in trouble with rogues called the Created. Now he's damaged emotionally and looking to settle down and peacefully work as a vet where no one could possibly know he's a wolf. Kasey Whitedove is the sheriff of Seth's new hometown. With Kasey's racism towards white men and his firm belief they can't take care of animals properly, Seth and Kasey have a rocky start. It doesn't take long for Kasey to realize Seth is his mate. Seth, though, is wary of Kasey and has a hard time trusting or believing him. Then Seth's past starts to threaten their fledgling relationship and they have to do all they can to stay alive.

This was an interesting story and I enjoyed both the characters and what they went through. I loved that Seth was emotionally damaged. He had an intense fear towards all wolves and Kasey claiming Seth is his mate increased that fear he had but for a different reason. Kasey, at first, was a bastard. There's no nice way to say it. He bullied and harassed Seth when he thought Seth was just another white man. He didn't start feeling guilty about how he treated Seth until he realized, and came to terms with, Seth being his mate, a white man and not being a Created. Still, I liked the enemy feel to the beginning of the book. It intrigued me.

The plot is a bit predictable and I pretty much knew how it was going to play out before hitting the half way mark. However, I'm a sucker for werewolves so the overly used crying, the insta-love and the way Kasey quickly accepted Seth as his mate didn't bother me. The world of these werewolves was interesting, though. I liked the differentiation between born and created werewolves and even how Seth was special. Although I'm still confused on why Seth is so special and why every male wolf wants to mate him. The issue with the Cheyenne's being so racist and their hatred towards any wolves not Cheyenne, I found very intriguing.

What did bother me, however, was the amount of sex in it. A good amount of the story involved them being sexually active. Considering Seth's past had rape, gang rape and abuse, you'd think he would have held out longer even if Kasey was his mate. My biggest issue with this story was the animal neglect. It was right there in your face that Seth's dog, Bullet, was there one minute and conveniently missing the next. I must have asked myself a hundred times, "Where's Bullet?" "Who's feeding Bullet?" "Who's taking care of Bullet?" And even though Seth kept apologizing to the dog about not taking him into the clinic, for forgetting, (how you forget you have a dog when he's following you around, I have no idea), it still annoyed me. I saw no point of the dog being in the book . Then there was no mention of Kasey going home and feeding his horses, just him going straight to work from Seth's then straight home.

ETA:I had a little trouble with the POV shifts. I felt like I was in both their heads in the same paragraph. I usually don't mind POV shifts with each paragraph, it's not my favorite but I don't have a problem with it, but this one should have been tighter. There was no distinction between Seth and Kasey. I eventually got used to it but it took a while. There were also multiple mentions of insignificant things that were pointless. Seth say a picture of Kasey with a guy and thought that guy look familiar. Then nothing more on that picture or who the guy was. It happened multiple times and left me with numerous questions.

Overall, I did enjoy the story. It was a fun read in the end even with the few niggles I had and I'm looking forward to reading more in this world and about these characters and their friends and family.

I thought about rereading this, but I couldn't make it past the first 50 pages. I'm not sure what I was thinking the first time through that I gave it three stars, but it seems that during my unenlightened early days in this genre I've gotten at least some enjoyment out of it. Or maybe I was high. Who knows?

My thoughts now are that this is utterly ridiculous. The permanently changing POVs, the completely ludicrous character behaviour, the all-consuming dislike I feel towards the big bad alpha Sheriff Kasey, the gigantic bundle of clichés - well. Let's just say, I do not recommend reading this. At all. Urgh. I'd like to at least find this funny, but I'm just really really pissed off instead. Double urgh. I think I need a few hours to recuperate before touching another book.

Ugh. Let me start by saying I have no problem with the wolf mates trope, the insta-love trope, or the dominant alpha male trope. All those can be part of a compelling story and can even be hot.

This book irritates me on several levels.

1. Severely abused people don't just jump into the sack with someone without any negative side effects.
2. Referring to Kasey as 'the Cheyenne' was so ANNOYING. We got it, from the first pages, that Kasey is Cheyenne. But frankly, I think the author is more hung up on race than her bigoted character proves to be.
3. Sex is an important part of romance novels, to me. It significantly advances the feeling of intimacy between the main characters. But too much is pointless and repetitive. I'm only halfway through and I feel this.
4. Nick...ugh.... Best friends? Really? Keeping such a colossal secret? Not learning his lesson even after Seth's kidnapping. Seriously?!
5. Spit?! Every time?! Sigh

He‟d never been overly attracted to another male...

Three books in this series, and all three feature bisexuals! What are the odds that so many bisexuals would be in same-sex relationships? In real life, very little, since only 9% of bisexuals are in same-sex relationships, versus 98% of gay men, but in the mm romance genre, the odds are damn near 100%! How could it be that gay men are so under-represented in a genre ostensibly about gay relationships--the answer is of course homophobia. The truly interesting question is whether this manifests through subconscious bias or something more deliberate, which I leave as an exercise for the reader.

DNF 77%

Awe - what a sweet story! I loved it!

I read a few reviews before I started this - and they were pretty negative about how Kasey was first raciest about Seth being White - personally I think it went well with the story. The story was about Kasey overcoming his obsessions, as well as Seth overcoming his fears - so I think it important that it was in there. not to mention that the whole pack was skeptical against white man/ werewolves - who wouldn't be if they believed the Created ones were all bad - I think the Alpha of the Pack should have handled it better, but in the end .....

This was a fun story - I loved everything about it! Even the whole Alpha male/submissive male thing. Although once Nick came into the story I was really hoping for a little threesome action :) BUT that would have completely ruined any chance of another story about Nick and his mate (which I'm hoping there will be :)

The story starts off with Seth - the new Veterinary in this small town in Wyoming. He has a special healing ability towards others. He can take the disease/sickness away from one animal, and take it into his body - then he throws up and rests for a bit, and all is well - how cool is that!

When the Sheriff (ie Kasey) comes to the office just as Seth is leaving, Kasey is a little put off by him being white. After all, white man don't know anything about taking care of animals... Seth tried to be cool about the Sheriff’s insults, but after awhile it just made him mad.
But rather than risking the life of his horse and foul, Kasey brought the vet over to his ranch. Seth placed his hands on the horse and knew that if Seth wasn't there to help, both the horse and foul would die.
But the Sheriff didn't show his gratitude , just politely huffed and took the Vet back to his car.

The next night - Kasey in his wolf form had camped out in a clearing in the woods. He smelt his mate there a few nights ago, but the smaller black wolf got scared off and ran - but Kasey would not let the little wolf escape him again.
Just as the smaller wolf walked into the clearing, Kasey slowly approached him. The little wolf backed up growling a warning - then took off running. Kasey wasn't going to lose him again. So he took off after his mate. Unfortunately his mate took a wrong turned and toppled over the edge of a cliff - luckily he landed on a lower cliff.. but unconscious, Kasey climbed down and carried his mate to his truck and took him home.

When the Pack's dr showed up, it was then Kasey found out his new mate was a male, he had assumed the smaller black wolf was female, but he was just happy to have found his mate, male or female. The Dr had to re-break the wolf's leg in order for it to set straight. It would take a couple of days before this new wolf could switch back to his human form, which was fine with Kasey.

When the little black wolf woke up and noticed the Sheriff touching him in wolf form, his nerves shot up and he backed himself up into the corner. Knowing that an alpha male claiming to be his mate was not a good thing. Knowing the Sheriff disliked him because he was white was even more fearful.

We go through the next couple of days with Seth in his wolf form, fearful of his new mate, not knowing what to say or do - when it's time for Seth to finally shift in order to leave the cabin, Kasey freaks out and of course Seth turns tail and runs away -

The fear from Seth is so real, it broke my heart reading about this. I felt every emotion he felt - torn between losing his mate and excepting Kasey as his mate. The terror of his past catching up to him, and trusting Kasey's pack to help him out - a Pack who hates White men/wolves -

What's a guy to do?? Lol Kasey's emotions were great - his guilt and his longing were really sweet. I loved how he played to dominate alpha male, but he didn't take it to a harsh level. He knew Seth was afraid and Kasey took his time, and put Seth first in every way.

What a sweet romantic story! I really loved it - putting it in my favorite folder to re-read another time :)

3.5 stelline.

One day, I found this book on Amazon whilst looking for LGBT books to read. I typically don't read "wolf romance" but I sent the link to my friend who said I should read it. What ensued was possibly one of the most confusing books I've ever had the fortune (misfortune?) to read.

To start off, I thought it was quite obvious that the author fetishises gay relationships. The author reads yaoi and also started off by writing gay fanfiction. I'm also 70% sure she's a straight cis woman, which literally screams fetishisation. An example from the book, "He'd never sucked another man's dick before, but it seemed the most natural thing in the world when it came to his mate." It's quite clear that she can write well, after all I did find myself enjoying this book. There could be so many better uses for that skill than... this.

Moving onto the book, it's actually not that bad. I was very relieved to find out it wasn't one of those Alpha-Beta-Omega or Omegaverse, whatever you call it. Luckily, there was no mpreg. If you know what that is, then be assured there is none.
As I mentioned, the writing is pretty good however there were quite a few plot holes that could have been easily patched up with a rewrite of a paragraph or a sentence, even. Despite this being marketed as a 'slow burn' it was not, in fact, a slow burn. I'm pretty sure they have sex in the fifth chapter.
I hate romances that are based off of racism, and that's what this was. Kasey, a native American (and the love interest), immediately gets angry at Seth for being white and being in charge of a clinic, because according to Kasey, white people can't take care of, and know nothing of, animals. I find this ironic considering Western culture (or white people) are generally the least aggressive when it comes to animals. I know places in Asia that are WAY more abusive to animals than I've seen or heard of in North America. Yes, people, racism goes both ways. Oh, but in like two chapters suddenly Kasey is the least racist person in the world and loves Seth even though he's white. I don't really understand this. Was it supposed to be character development? "OH MY GOSH THEY'RE IN LOVE NOW THIS ISN'T A SLOW BURN AND HE'S NO LONGER RACIST!!!!"
If you're going into this with the idea that the mood is very chill and loving, you are completely wrong.
SPOILERS AHEAD
All of a sudden, things get very deep. Seth walks into a scene at his animal clinic. Someone had broken in, and GUTTED a dog and smeared the blood and innards everywhere. ...what?
Seriously, what?? How? Why? This caught me so off-guard. I was genuinely wondering if I was reading the right book or not.
Later on, Seth (or maybe it was Nick) mentions that he got kidnapped for four months, and during that time he was raped, tortured and beaten. Who casually puts that in a ROMANCE NOVEL???? ARE YOU INSANE. These topics are so important and happens to a lot of people, but you're writing it in your book to make Seth seem quirky for being so reclusive.

I initially was thinking of rating this four stars. When I finished the book it became three stars. When I thought more deeply about the book, writing this review, it became two stars.

This book won an award, by the way. Take that as you will.

Head hopping within the first page and a half into his receptionist so we can see how beautiful he is just as she is as well. (So much so that apparently if he were straight, he would have taken an interest in her.) 6 head jumps involving three people in as many pages. I'm getting dizzy.

Ooo peril already!

Bigoted against a white man.... Um no. It's one of those things that... poor widdle white guy. Besides this is so over the top.

This is real poorly written. Lots of telling, head hopping even mid paragraph, cliched word choices, stilted and unnatural dialog (people use contractions in everyday speech ), etc.

The plot is different though. It's interesting and unusual.

Angsty which I like.

The bigotry is just so OTT. I love the bullshit angst but there should have been a better explanation.

The only reason I'm still reading this thing is one of the reasons it's awful: the OTT angsty melodrama. Few people have the skill of Mary Calmes to pull off such schlock well but the author is trying.

Both Nick and Kasey treat Seth like a child.

Nice that she used "nails" instead of "claws." As canines, they don't have claws, well except for the dewclaws (which have a purpose, people).

I like the reaction and explanation for how Seth reacted after Kasey left him after the incident at the vet office.

Good that Kasey didn't automatically know about stretching before penetration given that he had only been with women.

I still don't like that we're supposed to think Kasey is so sweet and wonderful when he's still a hateful ass. He only accepted Seth when he found out Seth was a special kind of wolf.

Of course the mom's "domain" is the kitchen. So far, the only other woman in the story is the receptionist.

Too much boring sex.

Seth finally tells Kasey he loves him and it's a big deal with all the crying and "do you mean it?"s, then a few pages later it happens again for the first time and Seth says he's sorry it's taken so long. Do these two have dementia or senility?

Still not sure why packs were kept secret. At least the good alphas do bad things, too.

The end game was excellent and the peril pretty good.

Typical shifter fair but a tad better peril than most.

FYI, I've read the next one now and it's much better except for the sexism. There isn't any mid-stride head hopping.

I'm not sure why such negative approach toward this story. I read a lot of book about shifters and even so, I think that this way enjoyable written story. Kasey behaved like an ass and idiot toward Seth, but his feelings were understandable, too. Everyone can behave like an ass based around different reasons, like pride or prejudice, and till all reasons around this behavior aren't explained, we have to take it as a small parts of a whole plotted story. Looking from this point of view I truly enjoyed this book. Seth was warm character and I liked him, too. The plot around his ability and his upbringing was well written.
I'm definitely looking forward to read more about Nick!

Another touching angst filled book by J.R. Loveless. Seth has only now started having a semblance of balance after a traumatic event over two years ago. He has come to Senaka for the peace it brings him; little knowing that his life is about to change again. Kasey is the Sheriff of Senaka and he really can’t believe that the old vet sold his practice to a ‘white man’ I mean come on what would a ‘white man’ know about animals except how to hurt, hunt and kill them.

This is quite a controversial story as it has racism and a bigoted attitude by the Cheyenne but not about being gay (no everyone is fine with that). What we have in this story is a firm belief that only the Cheyenne or a Native American could be a werewolf and any person who was white that could change into a wolf is one of the Created and to be hated and feared as well as killed, as they would eventually give themselves over to the wolf and become a monster. Fantastic absolutely fantastic. J.R. Loveless has given us a great story to chew on; one to make us think and to give us a story that isn’t all sweetness and light when it comes to werewolf abilities. A fantastically written storyline and plot that doesn’t give us an easy ride as you will hate and love these characters in equal measure. Although, there is just a little extra sneer from you for Kasey’s father for not telling his pack the truth years ago.

The characters aren’t immediately loveable. They grow on you as you get to know them. With Seth your heart aches when you learn that he has been sheltered from the wolf-shifter world and not even told the most important facts that would keep him safe, the abuse he suffered at the hands of the Created or the prejudice of non-white wolves. I think that after everything that he has been through and now finding a mate who is disgusted with him, that his breaking down and crying every now and again is understandable. He has fear; anger and depression with little hope or joy to look forward to. With Kasey you have a bigot who thinks that the whites are a waste of space and you see his struggle when he finds out that his mate is white and according to him must be a Created One because he’s white. When he accepts the truth you then see his struggle to get his mate to accept him and to be patient while his mate overcomes his fears.

I fully recommend this to everyone who loves shifter and interracial stories because the conflict is good. For those who love hot sex, as it’s scorching and those who love angst and danger… danger with a twist that is.

Chasing Seth
By JR Loveless

Seth has spent most of his life on the run. The last man who claimed to be his mate chained him to a wall and brutalized him repeatedly. Two years after his mate's death his best friend, Nick, has finally helped him heal enough to want to find a permanent home and settle down. He thinks he found it until the Sheriff comes to him for veterinary help with his horse and is shocked and bitter to find Seth is a white man.

Kasey is himself, like most of his town are, Cheyenne Indian. Their pack believes only true born wolves are Cheyenne and cannot come from any other race, thus they must be a Created one. An unnatural and dangerous wolf born by the bite of a true born wolf and is to be destroyed at all costs.

This book had a refreshing style of writing. It wasn't written in one or even two POV's. The pov from any character in the book can change with the start of a new paragraph. (Though it doesn't happen often outside of the MC's.) It's great not to have to wait until the next chapter begins to read the next char's pov.

There's a large amount of emotional turmoil, not just between Kasey and Seth, in the book. Actions by an old enemy and a new hurt both Seth and Nick. Seth's emotions come across as honest and overwhelming to him. Kasey's are the same but for different reasons. Kasey is terrified that despite the fact they've mated Seth will never love him and there will come a point in which he'll try to run again.

This was a wonderful book. I felt very deeply for all of the characters, except Kasey's brother, Thayne, who is just an ass because he doesn't care. I seriously wanted to kick his butt for hurting Nick so badly. There was a HEA, of course, and I am now going to eagerly start the next book for Thayne and Nick's story.

This is a shifter novel, and as such you have to expect the standard mate theory and plotline. Its the same as any genre of novels; it fits into a genre because it has certain typical scenarios and settings that make it belong to that genre.

That said, there were good and not-so-good things about Chasing Seth. Some of the plot holes that many shifter stories fall into were true for this story, such as the almost irrational instant-love, the repetition of the word "mate" and the use of a dorky pet name for the "female" partner.

But then there was also some of the good things about shifter stories in this as well such as the "uke/bottom" man that isn't so feminized that he might as well be female, the stance the "seme/top" took of - though he wants to protect his mate - he doesn't see him as incompetant in what he does and needs to be sheltered at all times no matter what.

This story seemed to balance in between what I would consider a bad shifter story and a great one almost throughout the entire book. On one side, Kasey would be calling Seth "pup" all the time to the point where it would almost seem derogatory (but - though I did find it irritating at times - its actually no worse then calling a woman "babe/baby") and then Seth would step up and put his foot down like refusing to believe in Kasey's instant-love and the idea that they could be mates at all.

In the end, I think if you're like me and enjoy shifter stories to an almost absurd degree, then you'll consider this to be one of the better ones and an enjoying, fun read. If you're so-so about shifter stories or like them even less that that, you'll definitely want to stay away because this story will probably only irritate you.

Yeah there is an hour and a half left in the audiobook, but I have to go to a meeting at work and won't get to finish it today... so I just don't care. Not gonna finish it at all, because I just don't care, and won't bother picking it back up on Monday.

Seth seemed alright, for all of the first few chapters or whatever, then he became an entirely different personality.

Kasey.... nope never warmed up to him. Didn't like him. Didn't like the whole 'white man is the devil' thing.

Didn't like the stereotype that the author used and ran with. Literally Kasey was always described as 'that big Cheyenne'.

For only a brief moment did I actually want to finish the story and possibly read the next, and that was right when we found out Nick found his mate as well. Then we got introduced to that character and I went 'nope. don't care. don't like him. not gonna read it.'

I'm done with this author. I just cannot do it any more. The writing is slow, full of stereotypes, and frankly boring. And all the author seems to love writing about is abuse.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!!!

description

The feel of this book was just amazing, I loved the plot, I loved the characters but most of all I loved the way this book made me feel. I have a soft spot for a good shifter book and this was a good one.

Seth Davies aka the white vet just wants peace and quiet after everything he went through but after Kasey Whitedove discover that his true mate is in town after Seth shifted in werewolf form things get interesting seeing as Seth is white and Kasey thinks he's made a werewolf and not born a werewolf.

I just loved how everything played out it was sweet and full of soul.
