Worthington, a lighthouse inspector, hotel patron, and single father of mischievous little Jimmy.

Sweet summer novella at one of the Gilded Age resorts. I have really enjoyed my fictional trip to the resorts of another era. Each book can be read as a standalone.

I found Addi to be a delightful heroine, a teacher who truly loves her students. Addi takes a position as a teacher at a beautiful resort for the summer. I absolutely loved her big heart for her students, and loved reading of the many ways she lovingly taught them during the summer months. As she explores the resort and surrounding area, she finds romance waiting for her as well.

Fans of historical romance will find this story delightful.

This is book four in the Romance In The Gilded Age series although each can be read as a stand-alone. I loved the historical aspect and learning about the resorts I knew nothing about. I felt like I had a satisfying visit after reading the descriptions. It would have been a sight to see. The character of Addison was endearing especially with her love for children and her creative ideas. Liam is caring but must navigate his growing feelings with caution as it could jeopardize both their jobs. It was fun to watch their romance bloom. A quick read but contains a great story.

So sweet

I so enjoyed Addie, always full of warmth and kindness. She genuinely showed her charges the beauty and wonder of God's creation and how to treat it and each other well. I enjoyed Liam and his protective nature. A fun and sweet romance.

Beautiful cover. Sweet, but rather simplistic in story development. I found it to be suitable for the younger adult set rather than us "Seasoned Citizens". I did appreciate however, that the story was presented with dignity and in a wholesome manner.

I enjoyed reading this book as part of the series, but it didn't seem as gripping to me as some of the other books in the series. I liked the relationship between the main female character and the children she cares for.

This has been a fun book to read as the author incorporates historical facts that bring the story to life. I love lighthouses and enjoyed all the information that was included in this charming story. The characters are relatable and teach us lessons on forgiveness and humility.

Addie is a gifted teacher who finds the perfect job as a nanny to children whose families are visiting the gorgeous Thousand Island House. Its beauty is enchanting and offers many comforts for those who stay there. Addie is excited to have the opportunity to give the children time to interact with each other as they play games, learn about the world around them and give them confidence to try new things. I loved how Addie was able to share her faith with the children and how patient she was with each child.

Liam has a big responsibility as manager of the hotel. His counters with Addie are fun to watch as they grow to trust each other. I liked that Liam was always cautious not to overstep with Addie and treated her with respect. He does ask Addie to do something as a favor for one of the guests which doesn’t go as planned. Who knew that someone else had their eyes on Addie? She is quite pretty and has been admired by a certain man whose child she watches.

It was interesting to see how jealousy shows itself in the story when Addie is accused of something unfairly. Addie wants to see this person pay for causing her name to be slandered but she has to choose to forgive and allow God to handle the situation. We all have had an incident where we were wronged and wanted revenge. When we turn it over to God instead, we allow our bitterness to go away.

One of the best lessons Addie teaches one of the children is about how life isn’t always fair. She tells the young boy, “Life isn’t fair, but we can still find joy in each and every day.” We need to learn to be thankful for each day and overcome any obstacles that try to turn us away from God.

I loved this book and how easy it was to feel as if you are part of the story. The ending is everything I had hoped for and left me with a warm heart.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

“Please, Lord, may this summer change my life.”

Be careful if you pray that prayer! You don’t always know what you’re asking for! Addison Belle certainly did not! But she was hopeful for something bigger and better than her life so far.

Susan K Mathis takes us back in time to the Thousand Islands of New York during the Gilded Age. Addi Belle is the female protagonist of A Summer at Thousand Island House. She comes from a rural background to be a daytime recreation teacher for young children, 4-8 yrs old, of the hotel’s clientele.

Addi does a marvelous job of teaching and training the six young children she has each day. While she takes her responsibility to educate, recreate, and train about God very seriously, most consider her a glorified babysitter.

“As far as your duties, you are required only to keep the children safe and quiet.”
This is her boss, Liam Donovan’s job description for her. He is quite delighted to see her teacher qualities of compassion and redirection in play. Others, like Miss Gert, hold a grudge against Addie and do everything they can to cause trouble. Still another character causes considerable trouble by his own selfishness and inability to consider the needs of others.

I enjoyed the attraction for each other that Attie and Liam fight. However, knowing the strict rules against male/female fraternization among staff or among staff and guests, I have to wonder about whether an attraction could really develop into something more.

I also wondered, as a former elementary teacher, about whether 4-8 year olds could truly guess at the meaning of the daily quotes Addie uses.

All in all, though, a fun story. I received a copy of the book via Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Christian Historical Romance books are a favorite genre of mine. A Summer at Thousand Island House by Susan G. Mathis is Book 4 in Romance at the Gilded Age Resorts Series. A Different Author writes each of the 4 books in the series, but the books flow together nicely. I have read a couple of books in this series, the book read well as a Stand Alone book.

Addison Bell enjoys being a Nanny and is also an Entertainer. She is excited about her Summer Job as Nanny at Thousand Island House on Staple’s Island. Addison will be Nanny to little Jimmy, he is the son of Navy Officer Lt. Worthington. Addison notices that both Lt. Worthington and Liam Donovan, the Manager of the Recreation Pavillion have taken interest in her. She isn't particularly interested in a relationship this Summer, as she wants to concentrate on her Nanny Job. Addison is scared when Little Jimmy goes Missing under her watch. Will Little Jimmy be found safely and will Addison be in good standing with Lt. Worthington? Will Addison begin a Summer Romance with either Liam or Lt. Worthington?

WOW, this is such a sweet novella. Addison's LOVE for her students as a Teacher is also shown in her Summer Job as a Nanny. She is such a sweet and loving caretaker. I LOVE that she at first puts her guard up when it comes to a Romance. I LOVE how Liam and Addison slowly engaged in a Romance. Liam is a kindhearted and loving person and they make a great couple. Lt. Worthington was a great character in the book being a Single Father Widower. This is a book about Healing from Past Relationships, Faith, and LOVE! WONDERFUL BOOK!

A Summer at Thousand Island House by author Susan G. Mathis is a Christian historical romance. It is Book 4 in the Romance at the Gilded Era Resorts Series written by various authors. All books in this series are linked by the Gilded Era Resorts. Even though this is book four it may easily be read as a stand-alone with no difficulty.

This is the story of Addison (Addi) Bell. Working as a teacher as well as an entertainer, she will be nanny this summer at the Thousand Island House on Staples Island. Her charge, Jimmy, is the son of Navy Officer Lt. Worthington, a widower. She also has a few other children to teacher or entertain.

The author has written a sweet romance that presents much information on the era and locale. I gleaned a lot just by reading this novel. The characters are well crafted and the conversations sounded authentic. With the vivid details, it was easy to imagine the beautiful accommodation and surroundings.

It took me a little bit to become invested in the story, but once I did I was hooked. Addi is a delightful character. Her interest and affection for children is genuine. I enjoyed the manner in which she taught them and how much they loved her.

Not everything is peaches and cream in this story. A couple of characters have a mean streak. Addi finds that her charge has gone missing. Plus there is a strict code of conduct stating employees may not fraternize with other employees or guests.

All in all, I truly enjoyed this tale and highly recommend it. It was a nice, quick read for me. I rated it 5 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit but these are my honest words.

Susan G. Mathis instantly wins the reader over to Addison Bell’s character. Addi starts a new position at the Thousand Island House to care for and teach young children while their parents vacation at the luxurious hotel.

The romance between Addi and her boss, Liam Donovan, unfolds sweetly. I loved the way Liam finds Addi’s enthusiasm for life and teaching so endearing.

Mathis weaves an extremely clean, sweet romance while giving the reader a taste of the history of Thousand Island House. The story kept my interest and I often found myself smiling over Addi’s personality or some antic of the children she watched. It was a delightful light-hearted read.

This book is the fourth book in the Romance at Gilded Age Resorts, but it stands completely on its own.

I strongly recommend this book to fans of sweet, clean historical romance. It is also very suitable for a YA audience.

Genre: Christian Historical Romance, Gilded Age Romance, Workplace Romance
Location: Alexandria Bay, NY
Time Period: 1885
Romance: Super clean. Most of the romance is through the character’s point of view thoughts. Only chaste kissing (cheek, hands, no lips)
Faith: Mention of prayers and one or two Bible verses.

The author did an excellent job in describing all the details of this luxurious resort by the sea. Set in the year 1885, it’s easy to imagine the dances, afternoon teas, and all beautifully detailed gowns that the ladies would wear back in this era. The story revolves around Addison Bell, a young school teacher who has joined the summer staff of Thousand Island House. Even though Addi is hired mainly as a caretaker of some of the younger children of the hotel guests, she wants to elevate her time with the children into something both educational and fun. Addi’s creativity and caring nature soon make her stand out among the hotel staff, and manager Liam Donovan can’t help but find himself drawn to the beautiful young teacher.

But things do not always go according to Addi’s plans as she finds herself facing some unfair accusations. The romance that’s growing between Addi and Liam could be in danger. It’s going to take faith and trust in God’s guidance on both their parts to answer the accusations against Addi. This is a sweet, faith-based romance that kept me turning pages to see just how Addi and Liam find their happily-ever-after together, especially as there’s a surprise twist or two in the story. This is a sweet, faith-based romance that’s perfect for those times when you want something lighter and entertaining to read.

I voluntarily received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

There is so much to enjoy in A Summer at Thousand Island House. The historical resort setting is interesting and taught me something new.

But over everything else, I really liked Addison. she is a pleasant woman with a passion for children and is so easy to like and root for. I love how she doesn’t want to skate by, but digs in deep, gives her all, and does much more than expected of her. She’s a delightful person who finds joy in the small things.

Liam seemed a bit stuffy to me initially, but it didn’t take long to warm up to him. I enjoyed witnessing his attraction for Addie grow.

The elements of faith and sweet romance make this such an inspirational tale. I love how Addie sought God’s guidance and instilled faith in the children she taught.

This is a sweet story suitable for teens as well adults. It’s the fourth book in the multi-authored five-book series and look forward to the next one. (Each book works nicely as a standalone.

First Line: Addison Bell breathed a quick prayer as she grasped the door handle of the Thousand Island House’s recreation pavilion.

When asked my favorite genre, it often depends on what I’ve been reading recently. But if I’m honest I would probably say historical fiction is at the top of my favorites, especially when the author incorporates real people and real places. That is exactly what Susan Mathis did in Devyn’s Dilemma. She expertly wove fictional characters into the lives and homes of real people. From the opening scene to the final page, I was hooked. I was thankful I had several free hours so I could pretty much read this book from start to finish. It was definitely a book I didn’t want to put down. Her fictional characters have traits that readers will either love or hate, depending on the character. The historical characters were God-fearing people and that was quite evident in the text. I enjoyed reading about these people I hadn’t heard of before and reading more about life in the Gilded Age. Devyn’s Dilemma is book 2 in Susan Mathis’ Thousand Islands Gilded Age series. I look forward to reading more books in the series.
Devyn’s Dilemma is a sweet romance, one I would not have a problem adding to a K-12 Christian school library. It would be appropriate for middle school and up.
I received a complimentary copy of Devyn’s Dilemma. This is my honest review.

Review for A Summer at Thousand Island House
An enchanting afternoon read, A Summer at Thousand Island House, once again provided a delightful escape to the historical Thousand Islands. This time it’s to the posh Thousand Island House Hotel on Staple’s Island. Addison Bell, an orphaned one-room schoolhouse teacher embarks on a summer adventure as a child minder at the hotel’s recreation center. Her appearance and progressive childcare ideas unnerve handsome center manager, Liam Donovan, who just wants to please the clientele and keep order. His past hurts make him reticent to opening his heart to the attractive young teacher. Each of them has their challenges and other characters who would be glad to keep them apart. There’s a faith element I appreciate as both Addison and Liam seek God’s will for their lives. While both make mistakes that threaten to keep them from solidifying their relationship, God’s grace is evident in this fun romance with abundant historical detail which draws the reader into the midst of the setting. Seekers of uplifting inspirational historical romance will greatly enjoy A Summer at Thousand Island House.

Summer at Thousand Island House is a quick read rich in details about the 1000 Islands in New York. Addi makes a fun heroine with her boundless energy and the joy she finds in all situations.

From a tour of the entertainment pavilion on Staple's Island to a trip by boat to a lighthouse, Susan provides a taste of life on the 1000 Islands. I cheered for Liam to win Addi's heart and shook my finger at Lt. Worthington by turn.

Summer at Thousand Island House wasn't exactly a put-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat kind of story. It had some conflict, but for the most part, just went along at a leisurely pace. So that being said, you have to be in the right mood to read it.

Quote from the book: Addi squeezed his arm, imagining him twirling her about 'till she was dizzy. She'd never danced a reel, but with him, it would be a pleasure. And to hear live music in person, here? In the open air? With him? Well, this was magical.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book, but my thoughts and opinions are my own.

Incorporating facts about the Thousand Islands area of New York with the story of school mistress Addi Bell and Liam Donovan, the entertainment manager of the resort, created an interesting story. I liked that Addi was a school teacher, loved the children, and made their learning fun. I could picture the children and Addi going on nature hikes to find items to put into the terrarium they kept all summer. I also liked that she shared her faith and showed the children how to be kind to one another through her actions and lessons.

Addi and Liam truly had a summer romance and I was surprised at how quickly their relationship concluded. I would like to have seen more of their courtship and time spent together. Liam was a sweet man, looking out for Addi when she was at the resort.

This is book four in the Romance In The Gilded Age series. Each one tells about a different resort and has different characters, so it can be read as a standalone.

The gorgeous cover attracted my curiosity right away. I was interested because I had never read a book by this author. Two people who understood what it meant to be alone in the world tell the story of their forbidden love, Liam and Addi. A despotic navy commander, a resentful coworker, and the ordinary antics of small children kept the plot interesting and moving along, making for a short and enjoyable read.
I appreciated how the writer wove a natural faith thread, as well as the island's Gilded Age history into her story. If you like historical romance, this book is enjoyable to read.

Author Susan G. Mathis brings the Thousand Islands to life in this Gilded Age inspirational historical romance. With the setting a resort hotel, I felt like I was on a vacation as the amenities available to the patrons were mentioned and described. I know little about that area and after reading this book I’d love to find out more. This was a tale of forbidden romance between two people, Liam and Addi, who were mostly alone in the world. A controlling naval lieutenant, a disgruntled fellow employee and the daily antics of young children contributed to the interest and movement of the plot to make for a quick and heartwarming read. I’ve enjoyed this whole series and recommend this book and the series to fans of inspirational historical romance.

Summer at Thousand Island House is the fourth installment and Susan G Mathis’ contribution to the multi author series, Romance at the Gilded Age Resorts. I thought it was definitely a great addition to the series. I loved this story of love, history, and intrigue. I loved getting to know the main character of Addison. I liked the small suspense and mystery she gets involved in. This is one of those books I do not want to put down until I have read it all from cover to cover. I greatly enjoyed it.
A Summer at Thousand Island House will be getting five plus stars. I believe readers who are fans of clean historical romance. I would love to read more by the talented Susan G Mathis to see where else she will take her readers and characters to next.

A Summer at Thousand Island House by Susan G. Mathis is a Christian Historical Romance that takes place during the Gilded Age. Addison Bell proves to be the perfect person to serve as a nanny to the young children who come to the Thousand Island House on Staple’s Island. She wants to do more than babysit them.

Liam Austin serves as the recreation pavilion. Manager for the resort. He strives to keep the guests happy. I loved watching the interactions between Addie and himself.

With a navy lieutenant, a jealous kitchen maid, children, and more, this book kept my interest. Filled with captivating scenery descriptions and a well-developed plot line.

So if you enjoy Christian Historical Romances set during the Gilded Age, check out A Summer at Thousand Island House by Susan G. Mathis for yourself.

Author Susan Mathis did a wonderful job with this dual timeline novel. Beginning in 1851 Ireland, you could “see” what was happening. The family forced to make a difficult decision. You could “feel” the ship creaking and swaying on the sea. The fear and the hope were evident. Then in the modern day, you sensed Maggie’s desperation and witnessed her spiritual growth.

I thoroughly enjoyed the historical information that was woven throughout this book. Maybe because I have Irish ancestry it meant more, but it was all so well written that you were there.

Despair turns to triumph as both women learn to trust and lean on God. If you enjoy historical fiction, or stories with Irish legacy, I highly recommend this book!

Ms. Mathis has delighted this reader with the character, Addison Bell, schoolteacher and hired nanny for the summer at Staple’s Island in the famed Thousand Islands. Her story brings to life the Gilded Age as she weaves history into her book. As an orphan, the heroine has grown up to find her talent in teaching children. Two suitors enter her life, Liam, her supervisor, and Lt. Worthington, a lighthouse inspector. I could actually visualize the characters as they stepped off the page.

Even though the children are challenging, she is determined to teach outside the bounds of “children should be seen and not heard.” Her outspokenness for that era and her romantic decision about the two men in her life make for an enchanting story for all readers. I truly enjoyed this inspirational read.

I have enjoyed the books in this series. I like how each of the books takes you to a different resort during the Gilded Age. I liked the characters in this book. I liked how much Addison cared about the children in her charge and really helped them develop into better people. I thought the love triangle was a fun aspect to the story. I liked the romance between Liam and Addison and how they tried to just remain friends until after the summer when they could be more. I thought this was a sweet story and enjoyed reading it.

Sweet summer romance - a quick read. Addie is hired at a resort hotel in the Thousand Islands. Since she had previously been a teacher, she brought those skills to what was kind of a nanny position. Liam is her boss but becomes captivated by her in her new adventures there. Faith filled. Includes interesting lessons about various history in the area.

A Summer At Thousand Island House by Susan G Mathis is a great summer read.Addison Bell is a teacher hired to watch children for guests at the Thousand House resorts but she does much more than watch them. She actually teaches them. I loved this story. This is the 4th book in this series but they can be read as stand alones. This one is my favorite. But, I recommend reading them all. They are all short reads. This book has children that I as a lover of children want to jump in and give them all a hug.

A Delightful Summer
Travel back to the gilded age of opulence in this upstairs, downstairs tale of forbidden love.
A Summer at Thousand Island House is a tender story to keep any reader company on these warm summer days. This simple story was just what I needed during a busy time in my summer as it offered me a reprieve at the end of a busy week. Mathis beautifully crafted characters that were relatable and likable while the children entertained with their antics.
If you are looking for a cozy romance, this is the book for you.

Author Susan G Mathis has crafted another heartwarming story with characters I loved from the first page. Ms. Mathis's research is obvious, and I learn something every time I read one of her stories. Tiny details evoke the era and the setting which make me feel as if I'm wandering the corridors of one of the magnificent Gilded Age mansions. Get ready to laugh, cry, and sigh as you experience a unique perspective of the Gilded Age by those who serve the affluent and influential. An added bonus is the opportunity to delve into the rich history of the Thousand Islands.

I have been enjoying this series of books about hotels and resorts of the Gilded Age. Susan G. Mathis is a new to me author and it was nice to read this book of hers. The romance happens quickly as it is a short book. I liked Addi and her love for teaching the children. The hotel sounds beautiful and liked "visiting" the islands with Addi.

Don’t miss this charming summer novella. —Davalynn Spencer, award-winning author of Inspirational Western Romance
