I read this book in 1994, and it changed the way I thought about stories.
Up until that point in my life, the vast majority of the books I'd read were fantasy and science fiction. Many of them were good books. Many, in retrospect, were not.
Then I read Cyrano De Bergerac. For the first half of the play I was amazed at the character, I was stunned by the language. I was utterly captivated by the story.
The second half of the book broke my heart. Then it broke my heart again. I cried for hours. I decided if I ever wrote a fantasy novel, I wanted it to be as good as this. I wanted my characters to be as good as this.
A couple months later, I started writing The Name of the Wind.
Over the years, I've read many translations of the original and seen many different movies and stage productions. In my opinion, the Brian Hooker translation is the best of these, head and shoulders above the rest.
The problem is this, the play was originally written in French, which is a relatively pure language, linguistically speaking. Because of the way it's structured, French rhymes very naturally.
English, on the other hand, is a total mutt of a language. It's as pure as a rabid dog. We're linguistically Germanic at our roots, but that's like saying a terrier used to be a wolf. Modern English is a rich, delicious gumbo full of Latin, Old Norse, French... and well... pretty much whatever we found laying around the kitchen that we wanted to throw into the pot.
(BTW, what you see up in the previous paragraph is the very definition of a mixed metaphor. Just so you know....)
Modern English doesn't rhyme naturally. You really have to stretch to fit it into into couplets. And unless this is done *masterfully* what you're doing ends up sounding arty and pretentious, or like Dr. Seuss to the English speaking ear. And those are best-case scenarios.
Brian Hooker was a proper poet, and he realized that the rhyme was secondary. He knew the most important thing was that Cyrano speak with eloquence, wit, and beauty in his language. So that's what he focuses on. There's a little rhyming, but just a little. Just when it works.
The result is lovely, and at no point do you ever feel like you're reading a kid's book or an Elizabethan sonnet. Cyrano sounds like a fucking badass.
So yeah. It's the best. If you're going to read one piece of drama before you die, read this.

Hercule Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac, a cadet in the French Army, is a brash, strong-willed man of many talents. In addition to being a remarkable duelist, he is a gifted, joyful poet and is also a musician.
However, he has an extremely large nose, which causes him to doubt himself. This doubt prevents him from expressing his love for his distant cousin, the beautiful and intellectual Roxane, as he believes that his ugliness would prevent him the "dream of being loved by even an ugly woman."

This is a beautiful tragedy - funny, entertaining, and heartbreaking at the same time. Rostand presents us with a tragedy in line with that of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet . It is one beautiful story of love, devotion, and self-sacrifice. Cyrano and Roxane are never to be united as a couple. But, they, in a way, are never to be parted either. Cyrano's love for Roxane is both requited and unrequited. True that Roxane doesn't directly return Cyrano's love for her, but it is Cyrano whom she loves vicariously. It is Cyrano's heart and soul she loves through Christian.
The hero of the play, Cyrano de Bergerac, is both a soldier and a poet. He is witty, chivalrous, brave, and loyal. But there is one drawback; he has a huge nose, which makes him look ugly, or so he thinks. He hides his love for the beautiful Roxane, for fear of being rejected, little knowing that the intelligent Roxane is not drawn to outer beauty but to inner beauty. His feeling of inferiority and his misunderstanding of a woman's heart cause heartbreak to both him and Roxane.
Cyrano is a romantic hero, a one the readers will fall in love with and wish to be loved in return :) He is also an icon of tragic love, both like and unlike Romeo, in their tragic love. The character of Cyrano is so well portrayed by Rostand, that we become instantly sensitive to his feelings - his happiness, misery, and despair. Our hearts break for him for his unrequited love, but they are also made glad by the knowledge that it is Cyrano who Roxane truly loves, not knowing it. I enjoyed this conflicting feeling. It is not often that one becomes both happy and sad at the same time in a piece of literature. When that happens, I consider it to be a wonderful piece of literature. That is exactly what I feel about the play. Amazingly, absolutely wonderful! The best love tragedy I've read after Romeo and Juliet.
The setting of the play is the time of the reign of Louis XIII when Cardinal Richelieu wielded extraordinary power over the governance of France. The time period and Cyrano's profession as a Cadet of Gascoyne, has given Rostand enough room to create an adventure, in addition to the dominant love theme. There was enough swashbuckling to entertain an adventurous and action loved mind. This combination of adventure and love arouses varying emotions. I enjoyed the fact that you could laugh, cry, and cheer at the same time. This is truly an admirable feature in a play, the arousing of conflicting, strong emotions, for it helps the audience to form a close bond with the play.
Considering all, Cyrano de Bergerac is a well written play. The historical and contemporary success of its performance can vouch for that. The Five Acts, in their separate episodes, were excellent; only the flow from one Act to the next wasn't smooth giving an overall detached impression. This could be an effect of reading, however, and not one that would've been spotted in a performance. And a play is always fully enjoyed and appreciated when you watch it performed.

Updated review with notes on a few available English translations.
This is the most beautiful and most heartbreaking love story ever. I have watched the movie with Gérard Depardieu in the title role a million times, I have seen stage performances of it. It never fails to make me laugh and turn me into a sobbing mess by the last line.
Cyrano is the best swordsman of Paris; he is also the city’s greatest poet. He is as grand in deeds as he is in words, refuses prestige and the limelight, preferring to keep to himself with his poems and the regiment he leads for company. He also feels doomed to be forever alone because he has a really, really big nose: he has loved his lovely cousin Roxane from afar for years, but has never dared to declare himself for fear that she will find his appearance ridiculous.
Roxane is beautiful, elegant and witty, but she is shallow: she is in love with the Baron Christian de Neuvillette, who is handsome, but lacks the eloquence to woo her the way she wants to be wooed. So Cyrano hatches a plan: he will write Roxane beautiful poetry, expressing the passionate feelings he arbours for her, and Christian will deliver the love notes and reap the rewards.
The speeches in this play are breathtaking with spirit, humour and wit. The original French version has an almost musical rhythm to every line. The characters are larger than life, passionate and deeply human: all three main characters are absolutely bad-asses in their own way.
This play is a pure delight, to be read and re-read again and again and I cannot recommend it enough.

French is my first language so when a book is originally written in French, I read the original. Having read a few books both in English and in French (namely Du Maurier and Kerouac, of all things), I am all too aware of how easily you can lose subtle things in the translation process and how that can often result in reading a book that simply doesn't carry the same flavor as the original. "Cyrano" was written in alexandrine verses, which is probably a terrifying prospect for any translator, especially if you want to keep the tone intact. This is a play about love, passion, sacrifice and strong characters: if the translator can't carry those things in his version, it just doesn't work. So out of curiosity and stubbornness, I combed bookstores for not one but THREE different English translations of my favorite play to try and figure out which one comes closest to Rostand's original words. Bear in mind that I have read and seen "Cyrano" a hundred time and basically know most of it by heart.
Everybody recommended the Brian Hooker version, which I ended up finding a little bland, despite it being regarded as the "standard" English version. Hooker was himself a poet, and he tried to keep things as lyrical as he could, but the speeches don't read as fluidly as I had hoped.
Then I read Carol Clark's version: she provides a really interesting introduction and notes on translation (oh, Penguin Classics editions and all your scholarly extra material, how I love thee!) which digs into the various challenges of preserving the energy and spirit of the play. That version was more dynamic than the Hooker translation, but a few turns of phrases felt like snags in an otherwise smooth ride. Good, but not quite right.
I then realized that Anthony Burgess (yes, THE Anthony Burgess) had also translated "Cyrano", and adapted it for the modern stage. I hunted that version down because Burgess is a wizard with words and I just had to see how he worked with Rostand's. In his introduction, he mentions that part of the difficulty in translating this play has to do with the fundamental difference between translating a poem and translating a play, which is invariably meant to be spoken out loud and performed by actors. Sure, you have to respect the original work, but you also have to think of the actors and the audience: they need to understand what's going on, and they need to have the proper reactions. He points out that Rostand's play has many comedic elements in French, that the Hooker translation, which sticks very faithfully to the original words, doesn't convey - hence why it reads a bit dryly. Cyrano is a witty man who makes fun of his adversaries and what sounds ironic in French will not necessarily sound ironic in English; you need to shift ever so slightly to convey the right vibe.
In my opinion, Burgess' version is the best English translation, because its the one that "feels" the most like the original. The rhythm and delivery are preserved, as are the shift from funny to poignant and romantic.

С позиций сегодняшнего дня эта пьеса кажется ��омантичной, рыцарской, наивной и непрактичной. Сирано честен, великодушен, одарен, добр, обладатель прекрасного поэтического таланта и искусства фехтования, он полон собственного достоинства, не давая себя в обиду из-за огромного носа, но при этом, сам подшучивает над самим собой и терпеливо сдерживается при глупых выходках возлюбленного Роксаны, которой он дал обещание быть ему другом. Он уступает ничтожному, но смазливому сопернику из простого желания сделать счастливой свою возлюбленную, не переставая ее любить. На таких честных и сильных духом романтиках всегда держался мир.
И как же современно звучат эти строки!:
Избрав хоть низменный, зато удобный путь?
Забыв о гордости и об искусстве чистом,
С почтеньем посвящать поэмы финансистам?
О нет! Благодарю! – От избранных особ
Глотать с покорностью тьму самых глупых бредней,

"Me llega hasta esa sombra una migaja de ti,
y sí, sienti un poco mi corazón que te recibe,
pues en ese labio en que Roxana se engaña,
¡besa las palabras que acabo de decir!"
La edición de Alianza Editorial es una joya para mí porque no sólo tiene una traducción buena sino muchas notas que aclaran gran parte del contexto histórico que sin ellas no hubiera podido saber adecuadamente. No sabía que la obra se ambientaba en tiempo de "Los tres mosqueteros", reinado de Luis XIII y sobre todo que muchos de los personajes participaban del movimiento del Preciosismo, que ya lo vi en la obra de Moliere "Las preciosas ridículas". Un movimiento del cual formaron muchos como Marie Robineau, Mlle. Scudéry, que brillaron en el salón de la Marquesa de Rambouillet por el siglo XVII. Sus postulados era un refinamiento al hablar y expresar las pasiones quizá demasiado adornado que perdía sentido por momentos.
La historia trata de Cyrano de Bergerac, poeta y dramaturgo que realmente existió y compartió algunos logros literarios, es un personaje que ha sido transformado en gran parte por el autor Rostand lo que lo ha hecho un héroe romántico, es un ejemplo de un personaje literarios que ha eclipsado al real y por mucho. Es un militar muy hábil y valiente que es capaz de retar a cualquiera que se burle de su mayor "defecto" y cruz, una nariz enorme, este problema cobra bastante relevancia en todo el argumento y de hecho debe ser uno de los mejores ejemplos en la literatura de una persona limitada y avergonzada por un defecto físico que no le deja aspirar a algo mejor. Pero de otro lado su ingenio y pluma es descollante por lo que cuando se entera que el amor de su vida, Roxana, su prima está interesada en un joven muy guapo y éste recurre a Cyrano al no poder hallar las palabras preciosas tan de gusto de su refinada amante Cyrano logra por fin expresar sus sentimientos aunque no siendo él quien da la cara.
Cyrano es un gran amigo, aunque soberbio por la fuerza de su sable, avergonzado como un niño al siquiera tener algún atisbo de esperanza de que alguna mujer se interese en él, es sin embargo un personaje de gran influencia para sus amigos Le Bret y el pastelero Ragueneau y para los terribles cadetes de Gascuña.
Hay bastante de comedia, luces de pensamientos y literatura, includio un asedio el famoso de Arrás donde los franceses combatieron contra el Imperio Español y muchos devaneos amorosos. Aunque me pareció un poco larga la obra y pareciera como que algunas partes sobran creo que la estructura es muy sólida y como mencioné permite conocer otros detalles además de los asuntos románticos.

One of the all-time great over-the-top romances - everyone knows the story, and it's been adapted a million times. How they could have given it a happy ending in Steve Martin's "Roxanne" is beyond me. The Depardieu movie is the one to see, of course.

I forced my class to read this book for their reading time, which is usually reserved for personal reading time.
They loved it.
I can't think of a better endorsement. No other book I know of can get the full enthusiasm of both an English teacher and a classroom full of stratified and unique, individual students--especially when they have been forced to read the book.
Why? Because Cyrano has a universal appeal that spans generations. Because Cyrano is funny. Because his tale is adventurous. Because it is unblinkingly sincere and puts away pretenses, if even for a few, beautiful and believable moments. Because we all hope to attain the kind of love that Rostand presents in his protagonist. Why? Because Cyrano de Bergerac rings true in the deepest and surest sense that any literature I have ever read has ever been able to attain.
Wow. That is a pretty epic and sweeping recommendation, you might think, but it only touches on the wide range of emotions I get when I read through it. And now, as I think back on this past reading and the several readings from before it, I cannot think of any book, any piece of literature, anywhere that has a more favorable spot in my heart. No other piece of literature has the ability to make me laugh, cry, smile satisfied, or yearn tragically with as much poignant ability as this piece.
Cyrano is my hero, and, according to his inspiration, I hope to preserve my own white plume up until the very moment of my death. What a beautiful person Cyrano is; what a beautiful character Rostand has created.
Read it. Just read it and find the Cyrano in yourself, because he is there, in all of us ... that much should be as plain as, well, the nose on your face.

One of the most balanced, talented pieces of literature I have ever read. Plus, I think that Edmond Rostand, besides being extremely clever and funny, has a few scenes of such startling, raw truth and emotion that I've never found an equal in other works I've read.

Ah, Cyrano. You never disappoint me. How many times have I read your story? How many times have I laughed, cheered, cried and sighed over you? Too many to count, and there will be many more in the future. You are my hero.
But did you know you were a real person? Wait, that sounds silly. Of course you knew that, but how did it slip my own mind? Maybe other times when I read the introductory note to Edmond Rostand's wonderful play about you, this phrase never took hold in my little pea brain: The character of Cyrano was real.
But this time it did. I googled you and sure enough, there you were, bigger than life. And you were a writer yourself! Knowing that helped me understand better than ever the scene with De Guiche outside Roxane's house. You know the one, where you fell from the moon in order to distract him long enough for....well, you and Rostand and I know why, but I cannot say because other people who have not have read the play yet could be reading this someday and I would hate to spoil anything for them. Anyway, De Guiche tells you that you should write a book about your trip to the moon and you say you will. I am about to read that book now, Cyrano. I look forward to your own words, even though they will not be in the form of love letters.
I understand that Rostand romanticized your life when he wrote his play, but I would like to believe that he captured your panache perfectly. And I loved how he had you meet D'Artagnan in Act One! I thought it was a brilliant touch, even though it was only a handshake and a few words from him to you. Brilliant because as you know, D'Artagnan himself was a real person, and you probably did meet him at some point or at the very least knew about him.
You took your real voyage to the moon in 1655, only 36 years old. So young to die, even for those years, don't you think? But you were here, you made your mark in the world. And thanks in part to Rostand and his play, you will be remembered forever. I hope you are happy there on your moonbeam, and can still catch golden stars in your cloak.

سیرانو اصلیتی گاسکونی داشت که مردانش به شجاعت و لاف زنی و رجزخوانی معروف اند؛در یک کلام سرشان درد میکند برای دعوا
ادمون روستان وی را با دارتانیان (قهرمان سه تفنگدار) که او هم اصلیتی گاسکونی دارد مقایسه می کند
که بنظرم با این کار مقام سیرانو را پائین آورده است

در مورد عدم اجرای نمایشنامه های سیرانو در تئاترهای فرانسه،در آن زمان باید والامقامی نمایشنامه را اصلاح و تایید می کرد و سیرانو که برای تک تک کلمات نمایشنامه اش ارزش قائل بود این اجازه را به هیچ والامقامی نداد
به چه دست یازم؟ قَدَر حامی حبلی، ولی نعمتی، که تمسک جویم و چون پیچک پاسار پای درخت، پوستش را ببوسم که بالا رفتن را، نه به توان که به ترفند، اجازتی باشد؟
طبق گفته ادمون روستان ، مولیر در نمایشنامه "نیرنگ های اسکاپین " بعضی صحنه های کتابهای سیرانو را دزدیده است

سیرانو هیچگاه مراعات کسی را نکرده و بدین خاطر دشمنان زیادی داشت
و طبق چیزایی که خواندم به احتمال زیاد مرگش بصورت طبیعی نبوده است
سیرانو که در زندگی مناعت طبع والایی داشت؛ مرگی درخور خود می خواست
،آن مرگ را به جان باید خواست، در سرخی تابستان شبی

بیشتر از کتاب به شخصیت سیرانو پرداختم.این شخصیت کنجکاوی ام را برانگیخته و دوس دارم دربارش خیلی بیشتر بدانم و حداقل یکی از کتابهایش را بخوانم
:در مورد کتاب
داستان اصلی این نمایشنامه درمورد عشق سیرانو به دختر عموی زیبایش روکسان است.شخصیت های کتاب بیشتر یا همه شان وجود داشته اند ولی در مورداتفاقات کتاب و عشق آتشین سیرانو و یا رفتن روکسان به میدان جنگ اطلاعی ندارم
از این کتاب چند فیلمی ساخته شده که جایزه های زیادی برده اند و آخرینش با بازی "ژرار دوپاردیو" برنده اسکار بهترین فیلم خارجی شده است.در تئاتر هم یکی از پرتماشاگرترین نمایشنامه ها بوده است

درباره صورت زیبا یا سیرت زیبا
دو تفنگدار عاشق دختری ماه رو می شوند
یکی تفنگداری زیباست که هروقت لب به سخن می گشاید حماقتش نمایان می شود
و دیگری سیرانوست که بینی بزرگی دارد اما درونی زیبا
که بخاطر چهره اش نمی تواند احساسش را به روکسان ابراز کند
به من نگاه کن، دوست من، و به من بگو این زائده زننده چه امیدی برایم باقی می گذارد.خود را فریب نمی دهم اما- گاهی اوقات که احساساتم به قلیان می افتد، در ساعات خاکستری غروب که در سرخوشی شیرین عطر باغی غوطه می خورم و با بینی بدهیبتم رایحه بهار را استشمام می کنم،آن گاه که در پرتو سیمین مهتاب،دست بانویی را در دست شهسواری می بینم، با خود می گویم:اینطور نرم و آرام گام زدن را به زیر مهتاب،دست در دست معشوق، به جان باید خواست! فکر از شدت وجد
!نزدیک است فلک را بشکافد که ناگاه
..!اوه! سایه چهره ام به دیوار
سیرانو در ورای آن چهره و سلحشوری اش ، مردی پر احساس است
دلم را به طنازی های کلام کفن می کردم تا چشم اغیار را بر تردی اش راه نباشد
:از اینجا به بعد امکان لو رفتن داستان است
روکسان رازش را برای سیرانو افشا می کند که از دور عاشق این مرد زیبا شده
و از سیرانو می خواهد که از این مرد در هنگ خود حمایت کند
ماجرای دو رقیب به گونه ای دیگر رقم می خورد
سیرانو همه چیز را به مرد زیبا می گوید، اما این مرد هم که عاشق رکسان است به سیرانو می گوید که توانایی صحبت با چنین زنی را ندارد
و همه چیز را خراب خواهد کرد
سیرانو طبق قراری که می گذارد، نامه های این مرد زیبا را به روکسان می نویسد و به بیان بهتر بدل به "درون" رقیبش می شود
تا نقطه ضعف او را جبران کند ولی در اصل فرصتی است تا بتواند عشقش را -از زبان دیگری- به رکسان اعتراف کند
دخترعمو که خود طبع لطیفی دارد عاشق درون این مرد می شود و از عشق ظاهر فراتر می رود
دوست داشته شدن برای زیبایی، کهنه دلقی است که زمان مندرس ترش می کند، و این برای جان سودازده مصیبتی است! حالا زیبایی فکرت، زیبایی چهرت را چنان پوشیده که از آن چیزی باقی نگذاشته و دیگر من نشانی از آن زیبایی اول

سیرانو اصلیتی گاسکونی داشت که مردانش به شجاعت و لاف زنی و رجزخوانی معروف اند؛در یک کلام سرشان درد میکند برای دعوا
ادمون روستان وی را با دارتانیان (قهرمان سه تفنگدار) که او هم اصلیتی گاسکونی دارد مقایسه می کند
که بنظرم با این کار مقام سیرانو را پائین آورده است

در مورد عدم اجرای نمایشنامه های سیرانو در تئاترهای فرانسه،در آن زمان باید والامقامی نمایشنامه را اصلاح و تایید می کرد و سیرانو که برای تک تک کلمات نمایشنامه اش ارزش قائل بود این اجازه را به هیچ والامقامی نداد
به چه دست یازم؟ قَدَر حامی حبلی، ولی نعمتی، که تمسک جویم و چون پیچک پاسار پای درخت، پوستش را ببوسم که بالا رفتن را، نه به توان که به ترفند، اجازتی باشد؟
طبق گفته ادمون روستان ، مولیر در نمایشنامه "نیرنگ های اسکاپین " بعضی صحنه های کتابهای سیرانو را دزدیده است

بیشتر از کتاب به شخصیت سیرانو پرداختم.این شخصیت کنجکاوی ام را برانگیخته و دوس دارم دربارش خیلی بیشتر بدانم و حداقل یکی از کتابهایش را بخوانم
:در مورد کتاب
داستان اصلی این نمایشنامه درمورد عشق سیرانو به دختر عموی زیبایش روکسان است.شخصیت های کتاب بیشتر یا همه شان وجود داشته اند ولی در مورداتفاقات کتاب و عشق آتشین سیرانو و یا رفتن روکسان به میدان جنگ اطلاعی ندارم
از این کتاب چند فیلمی ساخته شده که جایزه های زیادی برده اند و آخرینش با بازی "ژرار دوپاردیو" برنده اسکار بهترین فیلم خارجی شده است.در تئاتر هم یکی از پرتماشاگرترین نمایشنامه ها بوده است

درباره صورت زیبا یا سیرت زیبا
دو تفنگدار عاشق دختری ماه رو می شوند
یکی تفنگداری زیباست که هروقت لب به سخن می گشاید حماقتش نمایان می شود
و دیگری سیرانوست که بینی بزرگی دارد اما درونی زیبا
که بخاطر چهره اش نمی تواند احساسش را به روکسان ابراز کند
به من نگاه کن، دوست من، و به من بگو این زائده زننده چه امیدی برایم باقی می گذارد.خود را فریب نمی دهم اما- گاهی اوقات که احساساتم به قلیان می افتد، در ساعات خاکستری غروب که در سرخوشی شیرین عطر باغی غوطه می خورم و با بینی بدهیبتم رایحه بهار را استشمام می کنم،آن گاه که در پرتو سیمین مهتاب،دست بانویی را در دست شهسواری می بینم، با خود می گویم:اینطور نرم و آرام گام زدن را به زیر مهتاب،دست در دست معشوق، به جان باید خواست! فکر از شدت وجد
!نزدیک است فلک را بشکافد که ناگاه

سیرانو در ورای آن چهره و سلحشوری اش ، مردی پر احساس است
دلم را به طنازی های کلام کفن می کردم تا چشم اغیار را بر تردی اش راه نباشد
:از اینجا به بعد امکان لو رفتن داستان است
روکسان رازش را برای سیرانو افشا می کند که از دور عاشق این مرد زیبا شده
و از سیرانو می خواهد که از این مرد در هنگ خود حمایت کند
ماجرای دو رقیب به گونه ای دیگر رقم می خورد
سیرانو همه چیز را به مرد زیبا می گوید، اما این مرد هم که عاشق رکسان است به سیرانو می گوید که توانایی صحبت با چنین زنی را ندارد
و همه چیز را خراب خواهد کرد
سیرانو طبق قراری که می گذارد، نامه های این مرد زیبا را به روکسان می نویسد و به بیان بهتر بدل به "درون" رقیبش می شود
تا نقطه ضعف او را جبران کند ولی در اصل فرصتی است تا بتواند عشقش را -از زبان دیگری- به رکسان اعتراف کند
دخترعمو که خود طبع لطیفی دارد عاشق درون این مرد می شود و از عشق ظاهر فراتر می رود
دوست داشته شدن برای زیبایی، کهنه دلقی است که زمان مندرس ترش می کند، و این برای جان سودازده مصیبتی است! حالا زیبایی فکرت، زیبایی چهرت را چنان پوشیده که از آن چیزی باقی نگذاشته و دیگر من نشانی از آن زیبایی اول

Premessa: riporto qui integralmente il commento che feci su questo libro a pochi giorni dall'alluvione che nel novembre del 2011 sconvolse la Lunigiana, terra in cui da anni lavoravo e da cui mi sentivo adottata. Chi di voi cercherà qualcosa sull'opera di Rostand, mi spiace, non la troverà. Ma credo che questo ricordo vada salvato così com'è, a ricordo di tutti quanti passarono giorni nel fango per salvare solo dei libri.
Triste cronaca di una settimana post alluvione
Scegliere cosa salvare in una biblioteca di 46.000 volumi invasa da m.1,70 di fango:
gli scaffali in basso: Tutto da buttare!
gli scaffali in alto (pochi): tutti buoni. riempire cassette e inviare al centro di raccolta libri asciutti.
Gli scaffali di mezzo: controllare ad uno ad uno, dopo aver tolto il fango:
-letteratura bagnata: buttare...si ritrova, o si ricompra
-attenzione ai testi rari, edizioni preziose, libri del territorio
-attenzione ai testi di una certa epoca storica
Decidere della sorte di un libro. Decidere se affidare un testo alla ruspa perchè irrimediabilmente perso.
Mi sento come in un Fahrenheit alla rovescia: non il fuoco, ma l'acqua a distruggere la conoscenza...
Per alcuni di questi testi sarei disposta a girare per giorni tra i banchetti dei robivecchi... e allora decido che no, che li apro al sole, e li metto stesi sul muretto.

Lo so che forse non li salvo, che le pagine possono cominciare a rompersi, o nella migliore delle ipotesi a fiorire dando al volume un'altezza spropositata.
E vedendomi altri decidono di incrementare questo buffo essicatoio: maestre, adolescenti, bambini, frugano nei mucchi infangati, destinati ai rifiuti, e stendono, aprono, sfogliano; in poche ore c'è un prato di libri al sole. E' un simbolo di speranza per questo territorio sull'orlo della apocalisse.
Prima del buio ognuno raccoglie il suo mucchietto di libri fradici sentendosi un po' un novello Noè nel disperato tentativo di recuperare un libro altrimenti condannato.
Quelli che ho accantonato io sono stati fortunati. Il pizzaiolo vedendomi si è offerto di tenermeli sotto il vano del forno a legna, e ora sono quì, caldi e fioriti come crisantemi impazziti.
Forse non saranno più adatti al prestito nella biblioteca. Quelli che potranno tornarci saranno restituiti. Gli altri resteranno qui, a ricordo di una impresa fatta da centinaia di volontari anonimi accorsi a salvare libri. Una bella storia, alla fine.

يا الله , يا الله , يا الله .. على هذة الرائعة الأدبية !!
بعدما غلفت هذا الكتاب الأغبره لمدة عامين في درج من أدراج مكتبتي , قررت أن أقرأه و ليتني
إستعجلت بهذا القرار , لكنها الأقدار شاءت أن لا تمنحني متعه هذة الرائعة الأدبيه
إلا بعد عامين , مع أن الكتاب من الحجم الخفيف .. لكن لا أعلم ما الذي جعلني أستثقل قرائتهُ في السابق ! , مع أني قرأت بدايته في ذلك الحين لكنهُ لم يستهويني
وقتها كثيراً .
" سيرانو " يا لها من شخصيه مذهله , أظنها قد أصبحت واحدةً من الشخصيات الأدبية المفضله لدي ..
و التي ستبقى دائماً و أبداً عالقه في مخيلتي , أنهُ مثال جميل .. على أن قبح الخِلقه , لا يعادل شيئاً
أمام جمال الروح و الأخلاق و روح القتال .. و حكمه المنطق و الفلسفه الحياتيه !! / و أن الحب مهما كان صاحبهُ
قبيح المنظر فإنهُ قادر على أن يوصلهُ إلى المحبوب عن طرائق عدة .. إتبع " سيرانو " واحدةً عجيبه من
بينها , لكنها سرعان ما أنقلبت عليه .. فإضطر أن يعيش حبيس تلك الطريقه حتى يوم مماته !
هي فعلاً قصه عجيبه .. كل العجب , كيف دارت أحداثها و ما إنتهت إليه , لدرجه أشعر أنني عاجز
عن وصفها ببضع كلمات ! / رواية مشوقه منذ مدخلها إلى خاتمتها !!

E’ una storia d’amore e di nasi.
Le storie di nasi abbondano in letteratura c’è il naso di Gogol, c’è quello lungo e ligneo di Pinocchio, c’è quello di Moscarda nel pirandelliano Uno nessuno centomila che un giorno si guarda allo specchio e comincia a non riconoscersi più e va in crisi identitaria.
All’ampiezza del naso si attribuiscono difformi significati: alcuni fisiologi dicono che ad un naso lungo corrispondono profondità di spirito, spiccato acume e tutta una serie di buone qualità morali e caratteriali (Dante?!), tanto da dire che non può esserci un grand’uomo senza un grande naso, ma… sarà.
Vero è che se si osservano i ritratti d’epoca gli eroi hanno sempre un naso proporzionato alla loro gloria e anche tra gli animali l’elefante, dalla proboscide proverbiale, è noto per avere una prodigiosa intelligenza, sorvolo sull’associazione pruriginosa tra dimensioni del naso e dimensioni di altro perché non credo che ciò corrisponda al vero, secondo la mia esperienza, ma io chennesò… e potrei anche sbagliarmi.
Penso al naso di Giorgio Gaber che effettivamente fu uomo di grande fascino nonostante la suo imponente appendice, il naso di Cyrano è però un naso magistrale e di forma unica che ricorda molto il naso collodiano, lui ne è in fondo ma, amaramente, orgoglioso, tuttavia è così intelligente che riesce ad ironizzare sul suo difetto e ci dice, con grande spasso per il lettore che: quel naso lo precede ovunque di un quarto d’ora, che sul suo naso potrebbe passeggiarvi una mosca, che è come una grande penisola, che pende a tal punto da sbilanciare il suo corpo in avanti, che il fumo del tabacco non può uscirvi come da un camino senza che la vicina gridi all’incendio, o ancora che nessun altro vento può fargli venire il raffreddore tranne il maestrale, ed è pure adatto per appenderci il cappello e quando sanguigna è come se il Mar Rosso cominciasse a dilagare…
Un naso che lo distingue, lo caratterizza ma altresì gli preclude ogni possibilità di amore, perché a volte non si guarda ad un palmo dal proprio naso o da quello altrui.
Un naso la cui vastità è pari alla sua abilità di parlare d’amore.
Cyrano è un uomo saggio, poeta e musicista, ma spavaldo sul campo di battaglia, intrepido e la sua indole fumina gli procura sempre schiere di nemici che affronta con colpi mirati di fioretto « À la fin de l’envoi, je touche!>> dietro la sua scorza rude e giocosa nasconde un cuore di burro, romantico che ricama e inanella meravigliose rime d’amore mai stucchevoli né svenevoli.
Si sacrificherà per amicizia e presterà la sua capacità di poetare versi all’amico Christian che è tanto bello fisicamente quanto insipido e banale, Je serait ton esprit tu sera ma beauté il quale si servirà delle lettere d’amore scritte apposta per lui da Cyrano:
CYRANO,
Il reprend la plume.
Eh bien ! écrivons-là,
Cette lettre d’amour qu’en moi-même j’ai faite
Et refaite cent fois, de sorte qu’elle est prête,
Et que mettant mon âme à côté du papier,
Je n’ai tout simplement qu’à la recopier
CIRANO:
(Riprende la penna). E va bene! Scriviamola questa lettera d'amore che
ho già scritto e riscritto cento volte dentro di me, che è già pronta,
così pronta che se metto l'anima mia vicino al foglio non mi resta che
copiare
per conquistare la bella Roxane che Cyrano dipinge mirabilmente come:

Un pericolo mortale senza volerlo, dolcissimo senza saperlo -
una trappola della natura, una rosa moscata nei cui petali l'amore
tende agguati! Chi conosce il suo sorriso ha conosciuto la perfezione.
Riesce a fare della grazia con un niente, a trasfondere il senso del
divino nel più insignificante dei suoi gesti. Venere non saprebbe
scivolare in una vasca né Diana camminare attraverso i grandi boschi
fioriti allo stesso modo in cui lei si siede su una sedia o passeggia
per Parigi
Ma l’amore come l’acqua nascosta dietro un muro seppur soffocato per anni, troverà le sue strade per manifestarsi e riappropriarsi di ciò che gli è dovuto, ahimè anche se troppo tardi.

Sentimenti, ironia, comicità, imprese militari, provocazioni, verità nascoste, finzioni si alternano nei cinque atti di questa commedia teatrale, popolare ed eroica, in versi, che alla prima rappresentazione a Parigi, nel 1898, ebbe un trionfo inaspettato e a cui dieci giorni dopo assistette anche il Presidente della Repubblica Feliz Faure.
Edmond Rostand il suo autore, da un giorno all’altro divenne un eroe nazionale, degno della massima decorazione della Legione d’onore.

Penso al naso di Giorgio Gaber che effettivamente fu uomo di grande fascino nonostante la suo imponente appendice, il naso di Cyrano è però un naso magistrale e di forma unica che ricorda molto il naso collodiano, lui ne è in fondo ma, amaramente, orgoglioso, tuttavia è così intelligente che riesce ad ironizzare sul suo difetto e ci dice, con grande spasso per il lettore che: quel naso lo precede ovunque di un quarto d’ora, che sul suo naso potrebbe passeggiarvi una mosca, che è come una grande penisola, che pende a tal punto da sbilanciare il suo corpo in avanti, che il fumo del tabacco non può uscirvi come da un camino senza che la vicina gridi all’incendio, o ancora che nessun altro vento può fargli venire il raffreddore tranne il maestrale, ed è pure adatto per appenderci il cappello e quando sanguigna è come se il Mar Rosso cominciasse a dilagare…
Un naso che lo distingue, lo caratterizza ma altresì gli preclude ogni possibilità di amore, perché a volte non si guarda ad un palmo dal proprio naso o da quello altrui.
Un naso la cui vastità è pari alla sua abilità di parlare d’amore.
Cyrano è un uomo saggio, poeta e musicista, ma spavaldo sul campo di battaglia, intrepido e la sua indole fumina gli procura sempre schiere di nemici che affronta con colpi mirati di fioretto « À la fin de l’envoi, je touche!>> dietro la sua scorza rude e giocosa nasconde un cuore di burro, romantico che ricama e inanella meravigliose rime d’amore mai stucchevoli né svenevoli.

Edmond Rostand il suo autore, da un giorno all’altro divenne un eroe nazionale, degno della massima decorazione della Legione d’onore.

beaucoup trop triste pour ce qui était censé être une "comédie héroïque" ... !!! mais bon c'est un chef-d'œuvre et une des pièces de théâtre les plus vivantes que j'ai lues, un texte fait avant tout pour être joué et ça se sent dans chaque réplique, chaque mouvement. finalement est-ce que tout héroïsme n'est pas fondamentalement tragique ...? comme par hasard Cyrano lit l'Iliade, l'épopée du héros qui n'attend qu'une tragique fin, et pas l'Odyssée où Ulysse retourne dans les bras de l'aimée, se faisant reconnaître lorsqu'il n'est pas encore trop tard... un personnage véritablement romanesque tellement il est réussi, tout simplement (et j'adore la fascination des écrivains du XIXe siècle pour les personnages "laids", king shit)

ان كنت تحب ذلك فهذه رواية او ادق المسرحية تفي بكل ذلك مع جمال و شاعرية لغة فرنسية.
هناك ترجمة لها ممتازة ايضا بعربية و اسلوب المنفلوطي اسمها الشاعر.

What an entertaining and very funny swashbuckler this was! With such a lovable hero with a big nose and a bigger heart, whose wit is as ready and sharp as his rapier. Cyrano is going to make you laugh, think and feel sad with his rhymes (which, by the way, the English translation doesn't do full justice), whilst the heroine is a bit too vapid for him.
I do wish the ending hadn't been like it was, but I appreciate why it had to go down like that and how it fits Cyrano's character and shows his immense worth as a human being, so in hindsight it doesn't make me feel as sorry as immediately after the last act ends.
Oh, and of course, my headcanon for Cyrano is and never will be none other than Gérard Depardieu...
... whose superb performance in the film of the same name was what tipped me off as to the existence of Rostand's play and is, for a change, one of the extremely rare adaptations that don't elicit complaints from me about mishandling of the source material. I got lucky, for when I finally got to read this play, it turned out one of the best I've read this year.

Aldilà della storia d’amore, che pur gli appartiene e contribuisce a definirlo, il ritratto intenso di un uomo che ha scelto di essere solo se stesso, sia pure con tutti i limiti di una certa spavalderia e di un grande orgoglio. Ma disposto a pagarne sempre le conseguenze, con onestà e dignità. Uno “Stoner” di altri tempi, tempi in cui estrarre la spada era naturale come bere un bicchiere d’acqua. Ma comunque uno “Stoner”.
Ebbene sì, devo ammetterlo, mi sono commossa anche in questo caso. Sarà l’età. ;-)

هكذا يعبرّ لنا بطل هذه الكلاسيكية العذبة عن فلسفته التي اختارها في الحياة و كانت سببًا لشقائه و عذاب نفسه في طرق الوحدة و الفقر و غياب الأهل و الحبيبة...
أتذكر أني قبل قراءة هذه الرواية، ظهر في عقلي سؤال لم أستطع إيجاد إجابة مناسبة له، ما الحب؟!
هل الحب ما أجده حولي الآن في مجتمعي؟
أهو مجرد إعجاب ثم تحول لمشرع زواج؟
ما شعور أن يكون الإنسان عاشقًا؟!
ماهية الحب الفعلية، أين تكمن...؟
ثم اخترت قراءة هذه الرواية لأني مللت من قراءة الكتب و استبد بي شوق إلى الأدب و أهله، و وجدت ضالتي!
فقد جاء الشاعر و حكى لي قصته و علمني درسًا قاسيًا عن ماهية الحب، و عن جوهره الدفين، الحب كما يجب أن يكون.
الشاعر سيرانو صاحب الوجه الدميم و النفس الزكية الأبية التي لا تني عن التضحية بكل أشكال الحياة المترفة، و تتمسك بكبريائها و عزتها، شاعر و فارس نبيل يرفض الذل لكائن من كان، حتى قد يظل بالأيام بلا طعام، و لكنه شجاع كريم بطل مغوار مخلص وفي و صاحب موهبة شعرية لا نظير لها.
هذا النموذج المثالي من الرجل الفارس الشاعر يُذكر القارئ العربي بشخصية الشنفرى في جماعة الصعاليك الجاهلية، فإن هذه الرواية ما هي إلا ترجمة فرنسية للامية الشنفرى بكل معنى و كل خلجة.
ثم يعكس لنا الكاتب الجانب المؤلم في حياة الشاعر، حبه لابنة عمه التي لا تلتفت له مؤثرة شاب ذو وجه جميل و لكن صاحب نفس بليدة عيية لا يملك شجاعة و لا فصاحة الشاعر، و تعترف لابن عمها راجية منه أن يحمي لها حبيبها و يقيه شر الكونت!
و لا يتوقف الأمر عند هذا فقط، بل إن هذه الفتاة مصابة بداء أدبي مستفز، تحب التنطع و التصنّع البلاغي في التعبيرات الأدبية، تريد حبيبًا فصيحًا يعبر لها عن حبه من خلال رسائل طوال مليئة بتعبيرات متشدقة، و يعلم الشاعر بكل هذا، فيوفر كل جهده كي يوهمها أن حبيبها يتميز بهذه الموهبة حتى يسعدها قدر الإمكان.
و يظل على هذه الحال، صامتًا راضيًا برؤية ابنة عمه سعيدة لمدة خمسة عشَر عامًا، حتى تعرف الحقيقة بعد فوات الأوان...
لغة المنفلوطي الآسرة و تعبيراته الراقية الفصيحة و قصة عظيمة تمتلئ بالألم و التضحية الحقيقية.
في البدء قررت عدم الكتابة عن هذه الرواية، لأن روايات المنفلوطي دائمًا ما تلمس داخلي وترًا حساسًا شخصيًا، فقد أغلقت الرواية و ظللت شاخصة في الظلام أفكر و أتخيل ألم الشاعر طيلة هذه السنين...
ربما يراها البعض مملة و قد يراها البعض نمطية، و لكني من محبي الكلاسيكيات و قد أسرتني شخصية الشاعر بكل أفكارها الحرة النبيلة التي تجعل منه أجمل رجل حتى و إن رأى نفسه دميمًا!

E chi non conosce Cyrano? La sua lingua è affilata e potente come la sua spada, pronto a dar battaglia ad un esercito intero. Un povero con un cuore ricco, l’animo gonfio d’amore per la bella Rossana e un naso fuori misura che gli impedisce di scoprirsi all’amata. Ma quanto di quello che a volte ci sembra limitante per noi è per gli altri una sciocchezza?! Che cosa serve all’amore se non un animo puro in cui poter crescere protetto e al riparo dalle “intemperie della vita”?!
io parto per strappare al cielo una stella e poi, per paura del ridicolo, mi chino a
raccogliere un fiore.
L’eterna lotta fra il tipo bello e stupido e quello invece brutto ma sensibile intelligente e pronto? Sarebbe limitativo ridurre il dramma a questo semplice assioma. Cyrano è un poeta e i suoi versi brillano uscendo dalle sue labbra e raggiungendo orecchie che lo ascoltano. Si nutre della poesia, della sfida, dell’odio verso chi deride il suo naso, unica ragione che lo tiene lontano dalla sua cara. E così si nasconde. Accetta per una vita intera di vivere nell’ombra pur di stare vicino a Rossana
con la notte che mi protegge io oso essere infine me stesso, io oso...
(Si ferma smarrito). Dove sono? Non lo so, ma perdonatemi - è tutto così dolce stanotte... così nuovo per me.
Si può vivere di parole d’amore senza vedere e abbracciare l’amato?
dalle lacrime al bacio non c'è che un brivido.

Capolavoro! La genialità di Rostand è smisurata e queste cinque stelline corrispondono a una mia vera e propria dichiarazione d’amore verso quest’opera, dove ogni atto contiene una perla poetica, e verso il protagonista, Cyrano, micidiale con la spada e con le parole.
Le parole sono la sua arma, ma anche il suo nutrimento, la forza che gli permette di vivere e resistere alle difficoltà, senza mai piegarsi davanti al potere e senza accettare compromessi per convenienza, anche se questo significa morire in povertà. Morire in povertà, sì, ma in piedi a testa alta, perché Cyrano è un uomo che non smette mai di combattere contro le ipocrisie, le falsità e i prepotenti in nome della libertà. Ed è un uomo che quando ama, ama davvero, infatti solo per amore di una donna è disposto a sacrificare se stesso e i suoi principi. Perché solo quando si è amato davvero non si muore invano.
Se ancora non l’avete fatto, leggete Cyrano di Bergerac, sarà una delle opere più belle che avrete mai letto, brillante, eroica, tragica, poetica, intensa, capace di farvi piangere e ridere. E vi ritroverete a leggerla ad alta voce declamandone i versi come mai avete fatto, o forse sì.
E se non vi ho convinto...peccato per voi. :)

It's been a while since I read a French classic, and I might try to read more of them since this book was SO GOOD! I fell in love with both the writing-style and Cyrano!
I adore verses, rhymes, rhythms, and this play is perfectly written in this manner. It's beautiful, it makes my heart swell and explode at the same time!
Cyrano is a perfect character to me: both heroic/honorable and inconvenient/rude. I have a thing for this kind of heroes it seems! He is a poet, a warrior, quite confident, and, at the same time, not really: he made me laugh hard with jokes about his nose, and he is incapable of telling Roxane he loves her. This situation creates wonderfully beautiful scenes, but also tears the heart out of the reader: Cyrano is so miserable...

সিহানো দে ব্যেহজেহাচ (Cyrano de Bergerac) একাধারসে ছিলেন কবি, বিজ্ঞান-কল্পকাহিনীকার, দার্শনিক, চিকিৎসক, নাট্যকার, চিঠি-লেখিয়ে, সৈনিক, এবং তলোয়ারবাজ। যে সময়টায় সিহানো’র জন্ম, সেই ১৬১৯ সালে ইওরোপের মধ্যভাগ জুড়ে চলছে থার্টি ইয়ারস’ ওয়ার। ১৬১৮ থেকে ১৬৪৮ সাল পর্যন্ত চলা এ যুদ্ধে প্রায় ৮০ লক্ষ মানুষ প্রাণ হারায়, জার্মানীর জনসংখ্যা নেমে আসে অর্ধেকে। এ যুদ্ধের হাত ধরে ইওরোপ খুব অল্প সময়ের ব্যবধানেই আরো বেশ কয়েকটি যুদ্ধ দেখে যার মাঝে উল্লেখ্যযোগ্য নেদারল্যান্ড ও স্পেনের ৮০ বছরের যুদ্ধ, ফ্রান্স-স্পেনের মাঞ্চুয়ান যুদ্ধ, পর্তুগাল-স্পেনের যুদ্ধ, এবং সবশেষে ফ্রান্স-স্পেনের যুদ্ধ। শেষের এই যুদ্ধে ফরাসী সিহানো নিজেও লড়াই করেন এবং যুদ্ধে আহত হবার পর সৈনিকের দায়িত্ব ছেড়ে পুরোপুরি লেখালেখিতে মনোনিবেশ করেন।
জনশ্রুতি আছে, সিহানো’র নাকটি নাকি (আক্ষরিক অর্থেই) ছিলো বিশাল বড়। টেনিদা’র বইয়ের প্রচ্ছদে যেমন সবার প্রথমে তাঁর নাকের দিকেই নজর যায়, সিহানো’র ক্ষেত্রেও তার ব্যতিক্রম কিছু ছিলোনা নাকি। সিহানো’র মৃত্যুর প্রায় আড়াইশ বছর পর ১৮৯৭ সালে ফরাসী নাট্যকার এদমোঁ হোস্তাঁ (Edmond Rostund) সিহানোকে নিয়ে নাম শিরোনামে একটি নাটক লেখেন, যা আজ অব্দি তাঁর শ্রেষ্ঠতম কাজ হিসেবে টিকে আছে; বস্তুতঃ হোস্তাঁ এবং ‘সিহানো দে ব্যেহজেহাচ’ আজ সমার্থক শব্দই হয়ে গেছে প্রায়।
হোস্তাঁ তাঁর এ নাটকে সিহানোকে নিয়ে যে গল্পটি ফেঁদেছেন, সে ধরণের গল্প আমরা ৮০-৯০-এর দশকের বাঙলা সিনেমায় অনেকই হয়তো দেখেছি। ট্র্যাজি-কমেডি ঘরানার এ নাটকে আমরা দেখতে পাই সিহানো তাঁর বিসদৃশ নাকের কারণে ভীষণ হীনমন্যতায় ভোগেন, এবং লজ্জায় ও শঙ্কায় তিনি কখনোই তাঁর ভালোবাসার নারী হক্সেইন (Roxanne)কে মনের কথা জানাতে পারেন না। হক্সেইন এদিকে মন দিয়েছেন সিহানো’র কম্পানি’র আরেক সৈনিক খ্রিস্তীয়ঁকে (Christian)। হক্সেইন দুর্দান্ত বুদ্ধিমতী, শিল্প-সাহিত্যে দারুণ আগ্রহ তার; ওদিকে, জীবনভর শুধুই তলোয়ার চালাতে শেখা খ্রিস্তীয়ঁ’র একেবারেই কাব্য আসেনা! হক্সেইন খ্রীস্তীয়ঁ’র রূপে মজেছে, কিন্তু খ্রিস্তীয়ঁ নিজের থেকে বুদ্ধি খাটিয়ে কথা বলতে গেলেই হক্সেইন-এর হাঁপ ধরে যায়। আদতে একইরকম বোকা বোকা কথার বিরক্তিকর পুণরাবৃত্তি ছাড়া খ্রিস্তীয়ঁ’র ঝুলিতে আর কিছুই নেই। পাছে ভুল মানুষকে ভালোবাসার যাতনায় হক্সেইন আত্নদহনে ভোগে, সে ভয়ে সিহানো হাতে কলম তুলে নেন, আর বুকে চেপে নেন পাথর; খ্রিস্তীয়ঁ’র নাম দিয়ে হক্সেইনকে একের পর এক চিঠি লিখে দিতে থাকেন। মাতাল করা ভাষায় লেখা সে চিঠির কাব্যসুধা আকণ্ঠ পান করে হক্সেইন খ্রিস্তীয়ঁর প্রেমে আরো, আরো ডুবে যেতে থাকে, আর ‘কুৎসিত-দর্শন’ সিহানো দূর থেকে দেখে যান। হক্সেইন সিহানো’র হয়নি, কিন্তু তাতে কি? খ্রিস্তীয়ঁকে বিয়ে করে হক্সেইন তো সুখে আছে, হক্সেইনের সুখেই সিহানো’র সুখ।
খ্রিস্তীয়ঁর সাথে হক্সেইন-এর বিয়েটা শেষমেশ দীর্ঘস্থায়ী হয় না; ফ্রান্স-স্পেনের যুদ্ধে খ্রিস্তীয়ঁ প্রাণ হারায়, এরপর ১৪ বছর কেটে যায়, কিন্তু সিহানো একবারও মনের কথাটা জানান না। এই ১৪টা বছর হক্সেইন জেনে এসেছে তাকে লেখা চিঠিগুলো সবই খ্রিস্তীয়ঁ’র লেখা; এমনকি যুদ্ধের ময়দান থেকেও নিয়ম করে প্রতিদিন সিহানো খ্রিস্তীয়ঁ’র সই দিয়ে চিঠি লিখে গেছেন, প্রাণ হাতের মুঠোয় নিয়ে শত্রু শিবিরের চোখ এড়িয়ে সে চিঠি প্রতিদিন পাচার করেছেন, কারণ যুদ্ধে যাবার আগে হক্সেইনকে সিহানো কথা দিয়েছিলেন খ্রিস্তীয়ঁ যেন নিয়মিত চিঠি লেখে তা তিনি দেখবেন। প্রায় পুরোটা নাটকে সিহানো তাঁর দারুণ চোখা চোখা সব সংলাপে পাঠক/ দর্শককে হাসিয়ে মেরে শেষের দৃশ্যে উদাস ও স্তম্ভিত করে দেন। হক্সেইন-এর কোলে মাথা রেখে ৩৬ বছর বয়েসী সিহানো যখন মারা যাচ্ছেন, সেই মুহুর্তেই কেবল হক্সেইন বুঝতে পারে কি নিদারুণ এক মিথ্যের সাথে গত ১৪টা বছর সে বাস করে এসেছে। মৃত্যুপথযাত্রী সিহানো’র একটিই আবদার, সিহানো’র জন্য হক্সেইনকে আলাদা সময় ব্যয় করতে হবেনা, শুধু খ্রিস্তীয়ঁর জন্য যখন হক্সেইন-এর খুব মন খারাপ হবে, প্রাণ কাঁদবে, তখন যেন সিহানোকেও একটু সে মনে করে, তাঁর জন্য এক ফোঁটা চোখের পানি ফেলে…
১৮৯৭ সালে লেখার পর থেকে খস্তোঁ’র এ নাটকটি গত ১২৬ বছরে অসংখ্যবার মঞ্চে এবং পর্দায় অভিনীত হয়েছে। মার্কিন অভিনেতা হোসে ফেরার ১৯৪৭ সালে টনি ও ১৯৫০ সালে অস্কার জেতেন সিহানো’র চরিত্রে অভিনয় করে। এরপর থেকে সিহানো প্রায় প্রতি দশকেই ফিরে ফিরে এসেছে কোন না কোন রূপে। ২০২১-এই টিরিওন ল্যানিস্টার খ্যাত পিটার ডিংক্লেজ সিহানো হয়েছেন। একান্ত সাক্ষাৎকারে ডিংক্লেজ বলেছিলেন কিভাবে সিহানো’র সাথে তিনি নিজে মিশে একাকার হয়ে গেছেন। সিহানো’র মতোই তাঁরও যে নিজের শারীরিক গঠন ও বৈশিষ্ট্য নিয়ে প্রবল আক্ষেপ, হতাশা, লজ্জা ও হীনমন্যতা ছিলো! গত বছর প্রফেসর এক্স-খ্যাত জেইমস ম্��াকঅ্যাভয়ও সিহানোর চরিত্রে মঞ্চে এসে ভীষণ প্রশংসা কুড়িয়েছেন, তবে এটি আধুনিক ‘অ্যাডাপ্টেশন’, খস্তোঁর মূল নাটকটি নয়।
সিহানো আর হক্সেইনকে নিয়ে লেখা প্রেমের গপ্পোটি সম্পূর্ণ বানোয়াট, তবুও কেন সিহানোকে মানুষ অতো ভালোবাসে? কেন তাঁকে নিয়ে খস্তোঁ নাটক লিখতে গেলেন? এর কারণটি লুকিয়ে আছে সিহানো’র লেখালেখিতে এবং তাঁর ব্যক্তিত্বে। নাটকে যেমন দেখা যায়, সিহানো বাস্তব জীবনেও খুব সম্ভব তেমনি বাকচতুর ছিলেন, কথার ইয়র্কারে প্রতিপক্ষকে সম্ভবত একইভাবে তিনি ক্লিন বোল্ড করে দিতেন। ১৭ শতকের সেই অন্ধকারাচ্ছন্ন সময়টাতেই সিহানো হাসির বৈজ্ঞানিক কল্পকাহিনী লিখে ধর্মীয় কুসংস্কারে আক্রান্ত এক সমাজকে চাবকিয়েছেন, কর্তৃত্ববাদকে মুখ ভেঙিয়েছেন। যে ধ���ণের বৈজ্ঞানিক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গিতে সিহানো’র আস্থা ছিলো সেটিকে আজ ‘এপিকিউরান অ্যাটোমিজম’ বলে। গ্রীক দার্শনিক ডেমোক্রিটাস প্রায় আড়াই হাজার বছর আগে ধারণা করেছিলেন সকল বস্তুই বিভাজনের অযোগ্য ভীষণ ছোট ছোট সব কণা দিয়ে গঠিত (স্পয়লারঃ অ্যাটম/ পরমাণু)। তাঁর শিষ্য এপিকিউরান এ ধারণাটিকে আরো পোক্ত এবং প্রসারিত করেন। ১৭ শতকের ক্যাথলিক ফরাসী সমাজ এ ধারণাটিকে কিছুতেই মেনে নিতে পারছিলোনা। এর কারণ�� অ্যারিস্টটল!
ডেমোক্রিটাস পরমাণু’র যে ধারণা দিয়ে যান, তাতে দু’টি পরমাণু’র মাঝে একটি ফাঁকা জায়গা থাকে (void)। এই ভয়েড বা শূণ্যতা নিয়েই অ্যারিস্টটলের যতো আপত্তি ছিলো। “কোন একটি ঘুর্ণায়মান বস্তু যতোখানি জোরে ঘুরছে, এর চেয়েও বেশী জোরে কেন ঘুরতে পারছেনা?”-এ প্রশ্নের উত্তর অ্যারিস্টটল ভেবে বের করেন, নিশ্চয়ই কোথাও কোন একটি প্রতিরোধী বল কাজ করছে যা এর ঘুর্ণনকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করছে। পরমাণুগুলো’র মাঝে যদি নিঃসীম শূণ্যতাই থাকতো, তাহলে তো আর এ বল কাজ করতে পারতোনা, কারণ, যেখানে কিছু নেই সেখানে তো কিছুই থাকতে পারেনা! অতএব শূণ্যতার তত্ত্ব বাদ, পরমাণুর তত্ত্বটিকে গোল্লায় পাঠানো হোক। বাঙলাদেশের আজকের ধর্মীয় সমাজ যেভাবে শিশুদের পাঠ্যবইতে বিবর্তনবাদ পড়ানো নিয়ে প্রবল আপত্তি জানিয়ে চলেছে, বিবর্তনবাদের অংশটুকু ছিঁড়ে ফেলে দিয়ে বাকী বইটুকু পড়তে আহ্বান জানাচ্ছে, ১৭ শতকের ফরাসী ক্যাথলিক সমাজের পরমাণুবাদের বিরোধীতা এর চেয়ে ভিন্ন কিছু ছিলোনা। ফ্রান্সের ধর্মবাদীরা তাঁদের ভীষণ ক্ষুদ্র জানাশোনার পরিধি, এবং তার চেয়েও ক্ষুদ্র মনকে সম্বল মেনে সিহানোকে ধর্মনিন্দা’র অভিযোগে ফাঁসিয়ে তাঁর জীবনকে দুর্বিষহ করে তুলেছিলেন।
দারুণ আধুনিকমনস্ক সিহানো তাঁর গল্পে মানুষকে রকেটে চাপিয়ে চাঁদ এবং সূর্যে পাঠিয়েছেন, সেখানের অধিবাসীদের সাথে পৃথিবীর অধিবাসীদের পরিচয় করিয়ে দিয়েছেন, দুই ভুবনের সামাজিক আচার-রীতির পার্থক্যের হিসেবও কষে দেখিয়েছেন নানা ব্যঙ্গাত্নক গল্পের অবতারণা করে। আজ আমরা জোনাথন সুইফটের “গালিভার’স ট্র্যাভেলস”কে পৃথিবীর অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ ব্যাঙ্গাত্নক কাজ বলেই জানি, সুইফট-এর অনুপ্রেরণা হিসেবে সিহানো কাজ করেছেন, এটি নিশ্চয়ই এখন আর অবাক করা কোন তথ্য নয়! বৈজ্ঞানিক কল্পকাহিনীর অন্যতম শীর্ষ গুরু আর্থার সি ক্লার্কও সিহানোকে ওস্তাদ মেনেছেন। শুধু সুইফট বা ক্লার্ক-ই নন, মলিয়ের, যাঁকে দিয়ে মানুষ ফরাসী ভাষাটিকে চিনেছে (“ফরাসী মলিয়েরের ভাষা”-লোকমুখে প্রচলিত ছিলো), পর্যন্ত তাঁর Scapin the Schemer নাটকের দু’টি দৃশ্য সিহানো’র Le Pédant joué থেকে সরাসরি ছেপে দিয়েছেন! পৌনে ৪শ বছর আগের মানুষ সিহানো আজও আমাদের চারপাশের বহু বহু মানুষের চেয়ে ঢের আধুনিক।
সিহানোকে অমরত্��� দান করা ছাড়াও বিশ্বসাহিত্যে হস্তোঁ'র আরেকটি বড় অবদান রয়েছে; তাঁর বরাতে প্রথমে ফরাসী এবং পরে ইংরেজী অভিধানে 'panache' শব্দটি যুক্ত হয়। প্যানাশ শব্দের অর্থ আমরা আড়ম্বরপূর্ণ আচরণ, নিজস্ব একটি স্টাইল ইত্যাদিকে বুঝি। বাঙলা একাডেমি'র অভিধানে এ শব্দটির অর্থ লেখা হয়েছে "বড়াই ভাব"। নাটকে মৃত্যুপথযাত্রী সিহানো তাঁর টুপির পালকে হাত বুলিয়ে অনেকটা দম্ভ নিয়েই বলেন, তিনি রিক্ত, শূণ্য হাতে পৃথিবী ছাড়ছেন বটে, কিন্তু সাথে করে নিয়ে যাচ্ছেন তাঁর সেই প্যানাশ। প্যানাশ বিষয়টি আদৌ কি, এবং সিহানো'র প্যানাশটি কেমন ছিলো তার উত্তরে আত্নবিশ্বাস, হামবড়া ভাব, দৃঢ় প্রত্যয়, আপুন কা ইশটাইল...ইত্যাদি নানা শব্দের তাত্ত্বিক প্রয়োগ ঘটানো যায়, কিন্তু তাতেও কি পরিষ্কার হয়? নাটকটি পড়ে সিহানো'র প্যানাশ কেমন হতে পারে তার যে একটি ধারণা পেয়েছি সেটির কাছাকাছি একটি approximation সম্ভবত একমাত্র শিবাজিই হতে পারেনঃ

ডেমোক্রিটাস পরমাণু’র যে ধারণা দিয়ে যান, তাতে দু’টি পরমাণু’র মাঝে একটি ফাঁকা জায়গা থাকে (void)। এই ভয়েড বা শূণ্যতা নিয়েই অ্যারিস্টটলের যতো আপত্তি ছিলো। “কোন একটি ঘুর্ণায়মান বস্তু যতোখানি জোরে ঘুরছে, এর চেয়েও বেশী জোরে কেন ঘুরতে পারছেনা?”-এ প্রশ্নের উত্তর অ্যারিস্টটল ভেবে বের করেন, নিশ্চয়ই কোথাও কোন একটি প্রতিরোধী বল কাজ করছে যা এর ঘুর্ণনকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করছে। পরমাণুগুলো’র মাঝে যদি নিঃসীম শূণ্যতাই থাকতো, তাহলে তো আর এ বল কাজ করতে পারতোনা, কারণ, যেখানে কিছু নেই সেখানে তো কিছুই থাকতে পারেনা! অতএব শূণ্যতার তত্ত্ব বাদ, পরমাণুর তত্ত্বটিকে গোল্লায় পাঠানো হোক। বাঙলাদেশের আজকের ধর্মীয় সমাজ যেভাবে শিশুদের পাঠ্যবইতে বিবর্তনবাদ পড়ানো নিয়ে প্রবল আপত্তি জানিয়ে চলেছে, বিবর্তনবাদের অংশটুকু ছিঁড়ে ফেলে দিয়ে বাকী বইটুকু পড়তে আহ্বান জানাচ্ছে, ১৭ শতকের ফরাসী ক্যাথলিক সমাজের পরমাণুবাদের বিরোধীতা এর চেয়ে ভিন্ন কিছু ছিলোনা। ফ্রান্সের ধর্মবাদীরা তাঁদের ভীষণ ক্ষুদ্র জানাশোনার পরিধি, এবং তার চেয়েও ক্ষুদ্র মনকে সম্বল মেনে সিহানোকে ধর্মনিন্দা’র অভিযোগে ফাঁসিয়ে তাঁর জীবনকে দুর্বিষহ করে তুলেছিলেন।
দারুণ আধুনিকমনস্ক সিহানো তাঁর গল্পে মানুষকে রকেটে চাপিয়ে চাঁদ এবং সূর্যে পাঠিয়েছেন, সেখানের অধিবাসীদের সাথে পৃথিবীর অধিবাসীদের পরিচয় করিয়ে দিয়েছেন, দুই ভুবনের সামাজিক আচার-রীতির পার্থক্যের হিসেবও কষে দেখিয়েছেন নানা ব্যঙ্গাত্নক গল্পের অবতারণা করে। আজ আমরা জোনাথন সুইফটের “গালিভার’স ট্র্যাভেলস”কে পৃথিবীর অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ ব্যাঙ্গাত্নক কাজ বলেই জানি, সুইফট-এর অনুপ্রেরণা হিসেবে সিহানো কাজ করেছেন, এটি নিশ্চয়ই এখন আর অবাক করা কোন তথ্য নয়! বৈজ্ঞানিক কল্পকাহিনীর অন্যতম শীর্ষ গুরু আর্থার সি ক্লার্কও সিহানোকে ওস্তাদ মেনেছেন। শুধু সুইফট বা ক্লার্ক-ই নন, মলিয়ের, যাঁকে দিয়ে মানুষ ফরাসী ভাষাটিকে চিনেছে (“ফরাসী মলিয়েরের ভাষা”-লোকমুখে প্রচলিত ছিলো), পর্যন্ত তাঁর Scapin the Schemer নাটকের দু’টি দৃশ্য সিহানো’র Le Pédant joué থেকে সরাসরি ছেপে দিয়েছেন! পৌনে ৪শ বছর আগের মানুষ সিহানো আজও আমাদের চারপাশের বহু বহু মানুষের চেয়ে ঢের আধুনিক।
সিহানোকে অমরত্��� দান করা ছাড়াও বিশ্বসাহিত্যে হস্তোঁ'র আরেকটি বড় অবদান রয়েছে; তাঁর বরাতে প্রথমে ফরাসী এবং পরে ইংরেজী অভিধানে 'panache' শব্দটি যুক্ত হয়। প্যানাশ শব্দের অর্থ আমরা আড়ম্বরপূর্ণ আচরণ, নিজস্ব একটি স্টাইল ইত্যাদিকে বুঝি। বাঙলা একাডেমি'র অভিধানে এ শব্দটির অর্থ লেখা হয়েছে "বড়াই ভাব"। নাটকে মৃত্যুপথযাত্রী সিহানো তাঁর টুপির পালকে হাত বুলিয়ে অনেকটা দম্ভ নিয়েই বলেন, তিনি রিক্ত, শূণ্য হাতে পৃথিবী ছাড়ছেন বটে, কিন্তু সাথে করে নিয়ে যাচ্ছেন তাঁর সেই প্যানাশ। প্যানাশ বিষয়টি আদৌ কি, এবং সিহানো'র প্যানাশটি কেমন ছিলো তার উত্তরে আত্নবিশ্বাস, হামবড়া ভাব, দৃঢ় প্রত্যয়, আপুন কা ইশটাইল...ইত্যাদি নানা শব্দের তাত্ত্বিক প্রয়োগ ঘটানো যায়, কিন্তু তাতেও কি পরিষ্কার হয়? নাটকটি পড়ে সিহানো'র প্যানাশ কেমন হতে পারে তার যে একটি ধারণা পেয়েছি সেটির কাছাকাছি একটি approximation সম্ভবত একমাত্র শিবাজিই হতে পারেনঃ
ইউটিউবে খুঁজলে হস্তোঁ’র নাটকটির অনেকগুলো মঞ্চায়ন-ই চোখে পড়বে, আমার সবচেয়ে দুর্দান্ত লেগেছে ২০১৪ সালে বব জোন্স ইউনিভার্সিটির এই পার্ফর্ম্যান্সটি। কারো হাতে ঘন্টা দু’য়েক সময় থাকলে বসে যেতে পারেন কিন্তু!

I just loved it! The story, the writing, the characters; the alexandrines of Edmond de Rostand are lively, right, poetic, tender, funny; to read in French, because as always, the poetry of words has it’s own music that cannot be heard in another language ... I must admit that I have a little trouble concentrating myself to write this review, because it is February the 15th, and my friendly neighbors from the Vietnamese pagoda are celebrating their new year tonight. The drums will sound until two o'clock in the morning. Like every year, we are invited. The dragon does not bite and the rice is hot. If I’m not to tired, I might go for few minutes ...
So, let’s come back to Cyrano! What a man, what a nose, what a panache, what a verve, what a humanity, what a magnanimity!

Ah, a language is so beautiful when it is well rhymed, and Edmond de Rostand does it so perfectly! There is Molière and Gautier in his feather. His writing is light, cheerful, incisive, full of tenderness, and Cyrano is the same. We can only love this character who laughs not to cry, who has a quick wit like no other in spite of his nose, some would say, I say thanks to his nose. If he had not had that physical disgrace that deprived him of his mother's love, no doubt he would never have compensated for it by this dazzling talent of the French language.
One more thing that I liked : none of the characters is completely bad. It may seem a bit simple, too nice, but I believe the opposite: it's much easier to make a story with one or more real villains. In Cyrano, the suspense is present, the end is fabulous, the love story is terribly moving, without Rostand had to overwhelm us with horrible things to read. Great heart, great art!
So, let’s come back to Cyrano! What a man, what a nose, what a panache, what a verve, what a humanity, what a magnanimity!

December 7, 2023Aujourd'hui, une bonne amie m'a écrit, en disant que " faces are fascinating, but they are fleeting in their nature ", et je pensais à Cyrano, à ce que cela aurait été s'il avait accompagné ses belles paroles en présence de son long nez...
J'ai lu la pièce de Rostand il y a très, très longtemps. Un autre ami ( possesseur d'un long nez..) - m'a demandé de lui faire une recommandation, pour une femme, et ma première pensée s'est tournée vers Cyrano encore.
Blaise Pascal soutient dans les " Pensées " que " on ne tombe pas amoureux d'une personne, mais de ses qualités ".
Il est certain que je veux être aimé pour ce que je suis. Mais qui suis-je ? Je suis un corps joint à une âme. Mais aucun des deux ne se saisit en soi, on n'en perçoit que les qualités, c'est-à-dire ce qui apparaît de nous et peut changer.
Dans " Cyrano", Rostand met en scène l'amour secret que voue Cyrano, à sa cousine Roxane, qui lui préfère Christian, jeune soldat timide. Car voyant que Christian ne sait ni écrire, ni parler aux femmes, Cyrano lui propose de rédiger ses lettres à sa place, et subjugue Roxane par ses lettres d'amour enflammées, que Christian signe de sa plume.
Mais qui aime Roxane, alors ? En réalité, c'est qu'elle n'aime ni Christian, ni lui même. Roxane aime la beauté et l'éloquence, c'est-à-dire des qualités que l'on peut aisément détacher d'une personne.
S'adressant dans une dernière tirade aux mensonges des hommes, à la bêtise, aux préjugés, Cyrano meurt ainsi en héros de la lutte perdue d'avance contre l'amour tel que l'évoque Pascal : " Il y a malgré vous quelque chose/ Que j'emporte, et ce soir, quand j'entrerai chez Dieu, / Mon salut balaiera largement le seuil bleu, / Quelque chose que sans un pli, sans un tache, / J'emporte malgré vous, / Et c'est...."
" C'est ? " , lui demande Roxane, espérant lui arracher, dans un dernier souffle, l'aveu de son amour.
Mais Cyrano expire sur ces mots :
" Mon panache ".
