Intending to be a manga artist from his childhood days, majored in physics in college as preparation to draw science fiction works, and also to learn the technology of performance and imaging, went on to graduate school to major in image technology.

In 1993, while still enrolled, debuted in a Korean shoujo manga magazine. Since then, he gained popularity releasing a number of works and publishing books on how to draw manga targeting a wide range of reader.

In 2004 he stepped into the world of Japanese manga. His “Ultimate Space Emperor Caesar”, serialized in Monthly “Comic Gum”, was his first tankōbon in Japan.

In 2005, 9 out of Boichi’s 11 hentai one-shot serialized in Comic Aun were reunited under the volume titled “Lover in Winter”.

In 2006, he released two science fiction one-shot, “Hotel” and “Present” which, in 2008, were compiled in a volume titled Hotel along the other one-shots “It was all for the tuna”, “Stephanos” and “Diadem”.

2006 is the year of Boichi’s first serialized manga: “Sun Ken Rock” in the bi-weekly magazine Young King. This manga will also have a side-story based on Yumin in 2011 and one based on Pickaxe in 2012. 2012 will also see the serialization of “I want to feed Yumin”, another spin-off of Sun Ken Rock based on Yumin and serialized in “Monthly Young King”.

Boichi also worked on a 5 volume long manga titled Raqiya and written by Masao Yajima where he was in charge of the art and published in 2009. He also only did the art of the Brutality one-shot by Takeda Yuusuke in 2007.

In later 2011, he started the serialization of another manga titled “H.E the hunt for energy” in a new monthly magazine: Jump X. In this year, he won the Gran Guinigi prize for “It was all for the Tuna”.

To express his sentiment towards Vietnam and apologize for Korea’s action during the war, Sun Ken Rock volume 2′s royalties were donated to the humanitarian organization “Child of Viet Nam”. He asked Korean manga artists to contribute towards drawing a support page for Japan in regards to 2011′s big earthquake, and giving the royalties from the proceeding to the Red Cross. He also donated the money he planned to use to buy a new car towards helping tsunami victims.

Omg Ace’s story is SO COOL! I loved this look into his determination and his journey outside of Luffy’s. Boichi’s style weirdly really fits the world of One Piece and I thought the characters looked AMAZING!

Zolo’s fight with Mihawk is a nice little revamped version in Boichi’s art style, and the content itself is phenomenal so a great addition.

Fun little origin story drawn by the Dr. Stone artist. I liked the first chapter a lot! The rest of the volume is what is basically covered in the anime. The side story with Zolo/Zoro at the end was nice!

Banger Boichi Art 🔥

Seeing Ace is always nice, especially in this art style.
The formation of the Spade pirates and the story of how Ace met his first mate and more importantly how he acquired his Flame-Flame Fruit was awesome.

A lot of legendary panels here, especially those double-spreads like Jinbe’s, whitebeard’s, and Rayleigh’s faces.

Ace meeting Shanks, fighting Jinbe, getting shrekt by old man WB, meeting Ray Ray, was quite the journey.

As a bonus we got the fantastic Zoro vs Mihawk remastered which I have read a few years ago but was still fantastic to reread in physical format

Beautiful art and they've kept well to the story of the novels! They also included Zoro's fight with Mihawk which was really pretty as well! Would definitely recommend.

I have noticed that in all the manga's of one piece that I own and this manga as well that Zoro's name is written wrong, instead of Zoro it's written as Zolo. thought I'd let you know.

REVIEW

I'm currently watching Marineford, so I wanted to check out Ace's story for more background information. I decided to read the Manga adaptation as I heard some mixed things about the light novel this is based on. That was a good decision as I loved the art style and thought the format of Ace's friend Masked Deuce telling their story worked well visually! Both of them meet on an abandoned island that they desperately want to escape. I liked Ace when we met him during the Alabasta Saga, but I'm sad that we didn't get to see much of him, which is why I loved seeing the origins of his pirate journey. Masked Deuce is his first crewmember when they end up escaping and the foundation of the Spade pirates. We also get to see how Ace ate his Devil Fruit! Because they were hungry, they divided the mysterious fruit they found into two halves, but since Ace took the first bite, only he got the fire powers!

I really liked seeing Deuce's and Ace's friendship and first adventures on the Grand Line. I wish we'd see the recruitment of the other members though, as the rest of the crew didn't get any story or personality. Suddenly, they're all together as the Spade pirates, but the moments in between are missing. I wish we'd gotten more volumes in Ace's story as it would have been great to give his other crewmembers some depth like in the original story with the Strawhwats! Instead, we get glimpses of Ace sailing with his crew and visiting some places we've already seen such as the Sabaody Archipelago. Ace has lofty goals as he's determined to defeat Whitebeard. It was interesting seeing how he met Jimbe, as they're locked away together during the Impel Down Arc!

Extrait :

Loose thoughts:
- I assume that you're up-to-date with the main series of One Piece, otherwise: Spoiler alert.
- Didn't know what I expected going in, but the pacing is wayy too fast. There are too many comedic moments in there that felt crammed in die the sake of having comedic moments and not just the two protagonists and situation playing off of each other naturally.
- The emotions of especially of the masked guy are too instable/over the top, too fast. Like chill, I know you're dying on an island, but he acts like a child. An impulse, emotional brat.
- I don't feel like this Ace has the same energy like the original. Sometimes he seems too relentless, other times too stoic. Again: The author goes overboard with trying to make him seem cool so it ends up feeling too tryhard. Even the fact that he could ace (pun intended) his first finger-shots of fire even though he was unaware of his powers a second before, just doesn't make any sense. And then he seems to already know it, taking away from my expectation that most devil fruit powers aren't general knowledge and robbing me of a more surprised reaction of Ace.
- The Mera Mera no mir being spit out in a chest from a random Boss-like monster seems like a rare drop from a JRPG.
- While the really detailed and intricate drawings are rather cumbersome in action scenes and make them hard to read, they shine in much calmer moments of backgrounds and close-up shots of characters or like the one of the Mera Mera no mi.
- The additional One Piece cover story was quite nice. Id had similar issues, but at least I could tolerate the crazy emotions much more, because it wasn't two characters that just met each other.

I enjoyed this!

This is a manga adaptation of the light novel—which provided insight into Ace’s background. We learn how Ace made a name for himself in the pirate world, how he found his flame-flame devil fruit, and how he eventually joined up as Fire Fist Ace with Whitebeard’s crew.

We also get a bonus chapter depicting Zoro’s critical first showdown with Mihawk Dracule in this mangaka’s style. It’s an unexpected and very aesthetically pleasing addition to the manga.

The illustration style in this one is really sharp and dynamic. The action is detailed and very artfully depicted. There are a couple full-page spreads that depict some really cool perspectives. Also, this is a very aesthetic manga style. It’s definitely more contemporary and clean than the One Piece source material.

Overall, I thought this was a fun read and I’m appreciative of how many of these side stories are being made into legit manga collections. One Piece is such a cornerstone in the genre and it’s inspired so many other artists and mangaka to make such cool, imaginative things. I think fans will really enjoy having some of these things published and more accessible.

First, let me say that I love one piece and Dr. Stone both as a series and their respective art styles, when i first saw this cover a part of me couldn't wrap my head around it, it didn't feel one piece to me, for the forst few pages i had that same feeling, but after the forst chapter the designs and art style began to settle in my mind and I enjoyed reading the first volume, yes some of the designs for big character had me questioning what I was looking at but Boichi's art style is just so breathtaking I couldn't not eventually love it (Once my one piece brain accepted it) really looking forward to reading the second volume

Full disclosure: I have a paperback by Viz, not Kindle/e-book, but I don't feel like going through the process of adding the paperback edition.

Despite cultural osmosis, I know barely anything about One Piece beyond its MASSIVE LENGTH and a handful of things I remember wrong, if at all—for instance, I know the Devil Fruits are gross but couldn't remember the name. (All I remembered was "not Gum Gum Fruit.")

That said, I imagine that completely new readers would still be able to follow this pretty well! Since it starts off introducing Ace (via Masked Deuce), it's a little bit like learning about Captain Ahab through Ishmael. Sure, there's the matter of the Devil Fruit, but it's really just one supernatural element in an otherwise sort of normal story (for a shounen title, haha). Maybe new readers might be confused by Luffy being stretchy like Mister Fantastic, but at least the main story is pretty understandable (I think).

Also, pretty much the only reason I read this at all was for Boichi. Maybe it's Dr.STONE withdrawal, but I just wanted to see more of his work! I know a lot of his other work has severe Male Gaze (which is just slightly lessened here by the lack of female characters, though there ARE mermaids and... Nami?), but once in a while, it's just... gorgeous!

extreme close-up of Captain Ace, by Boichi

Recommended for One Piece fans, but also Boichi fans!

I read the light novels a while ago, and the artwork added so much!! The panel of Roger in the clouds had me tearing up! Everything is so beautiful.

These are must-reads for any One Piece fan. They add so much to Ace's character and the Spade Pirates (we finally saw them in an episode, and I was a blubbering mess because I read the novels)

💕🔥💕

Extra credit for the redone Zoro and Mihawk fight. Was already one of the best in early One Piece.
