I knew I was destined to fall in love with Blucy. We are a family of cat lovers and blue is my favorite color. In this delightful new book by Julia Dweck, we are treated to a wide array of typical “cat behaviour” – that is… aloof, playful, and a bit destructive. Scratch that… alot destructive. I had to laugh at the page where Blucy was hanging by the curtains – we have one of those cats too!

As usual, Julia Dweck entertains through brilliant whimsical rhyming verse. Here is a sample:

Now Mandy thought that Blucy might be hiding in the pots,
But Blucy had lay down to rest among Forget-Me-Nots.
So no one noticed Blucy as she watched the bumblebees.
Until she sniffed a flower and then blasted out a sneeze!

Julia Dweck has worked with many fantastic illustrators and for this book she has teamed up with Erika LeBarre. The illustrations are gorgeous! They fill up the whole page and feature a beautiful palette of colors. At the start of the book, Blucy is actually an orange cat; but, as she experiences new emotions, she changes color – a very unusual shade of blue. It is quite comical to see the pictures of Blucy engaged in typical cat-like behavior. Great illustrations!

There are a few add-ons at the back of the book. As with all her previous books, we are treated to a caricature of the author, Julia Dweck, and the illustrator as characters in the book. There are a series of little “cat facts” such as “Cats can make over 100 sounds.” On the last page, there is a fun activity where children can search for items (e.g., butterfly, cat, flower) in a larger diagram. These add-ons were terrific!

My Bottom Line:

Julia Dweck scores another winner Blucy! This book is beautifully illustrated, features solid rhyming verse, has a most unusual main character in Blucy the cat, and will surely be loved and appreciated by all cat-lovers! I would recommend this wonderful picture book to children who love cats and for their grown-ups who will recognize their own cat’s behavior in this funny story. Ages 3+.

Cute and Unique!

This is such a fun rhyming story! Blucy, the blue cat, has lots of great adventures and the illustrations are lovely! There are a few fun games at the back of the book, too!

My two year old grandson really enjoyed it.

This time around Ms. Dweck has teamed with Erika LeBarre to produce a short sweet tale in verse about a very strange kitten.

The story begins with Mandy, the only other character, visiting the local shelter in search of just the right cat. Her eyes set upon Blucy, peacefully curled up in sleep. Mandy falls in love with her and adopts the kitten. But Blucy proves to be quite cantankerous and obstinate. She refuses to eat and drink. In fact, she disappears whenever it is time to eat. The only thing she eats are blue jellybeans! Blucy possesses a unique talent. This cat turns blue whenever she is excited or feels moody. Blucy chooses to camouflage herself by blending in with all things blue. What havoc Blucy wreaks!. She destroys the curtains, birthday gifts, and draws on walls with blue crayons. The kitten shreds all the clothes in the laundry pile. Poor Mandy is at her wit’s end. The playmate that she hoped to have causes nothing but trouble. Then one day, Mandy discovers a secret that will allow Blucy to eat and even want to come home at night to play with her. You will have to read the book to find out how Mandy accomplishes this feat.

This book is approximately twenty pages with full screen images and pop up the text. The illustrations portray such lively animation that you will think you are in the story. Mandy has a unique, almost multicultural appearance, and Blucy’s eyes will mesmerize you. There are two bonus features included at the end of the story, a hidden picture puzzle for younger readers and a page of amazing cat facts for the older reader. Children four and older as well as adults will enjoy the clever four line verse on each page. The rhymes make it fun to read aloud.

This book review should surprise no one that knows me. I love cats. Granted, I did not always. I always thought dogs were the best, but my daughter introduced me to the true joys of cats, and we now have thirteen! Okay, so this book was about a cat that I would love to have. Blue happens to be my favorite color, and this story was exquisitely written and illustrated! I could see our mischievous cats in Blucy, and my daughter is much like Lucy. I can't say whether I enjoyed the story or the facts at the end better (there truly were some amazing cat facts in the back of the book). One word of caution--this book will not show up on a traditional kindle. I had to read it on the computer, but it was easy enough to read. I think I would have preferred a physical copy, but that is my opinion. The rhyming structure of the story was absolutely flawless and far above average. I highly recommend this book to children and cat lovers worldwide!

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

Note: I only have just learned that all children's picture books cannot be read on a black-and-white device, so this is not something unusual. It is just the first time I have ever seen this happen. I have learned something!

This is a cute picture book with great illustrations. It's most appropriate for children 5-years-old and under. Girls who like cats are the main audience. The concept is fanciful and the colors are eye catching. Each illustration is accompanied four lines of rhyming prose. Good for a bedtime story.

Blucy: The Blue Cat by Julia Dweck is a children’s book about Mandy and her mischievous cat.

Mandy is at the pound looking for a new friend when she spots a kitten named Lucy and falls in love. Once they head home, Mandy soon learns that her kitten is very different from other cats. Lucy’s fur changes color, specifically blue, depending on her mood. Since Lucy is the only cat that Mandy knows that is able to turn blue she decides to change her name to Blucy.

Mandy has ideas about training and developing a relationship with her kitten; however, she finds that Blucy has ideas of her own. Blucy is a handful that prefers to dive into a bowl of blue Jell-O, swim in the pool, hide in the flower beds, and draw self-portraits with Mandy’s blue crayon. She pulls down a curtain rod, shreds a basket of Mandy’s laundry, and even tears apart wrapped packages that are hidden in the closet. No matter what she does, Mandy can’t seem to get close to her new friend.

One day, Mandy has an idea about a new treat that she hopes will bring Blucy and her closer together. Their relationship blooms from there and soon Blucy is more drawn to friendship than trouble.

Julia Dweck has written a creative, rhyming book for children and one that my 3-year-old thoroughly enjoys. The illustrations by Erika LeBarre are perfect for the storyline and really bring the characters to life. In fact, as I sit here writing this review my daughter is sitting next to me and “reading” the book to me based on the pictures. I love the vibrant use of colors and the multiple hues of blue that are introduced.

I also feel it is important to note that I love how the book is formatted. Each page fills the entire screen when I turn my Kindle Fire to landscape mode. I often find that ebooks are not formatted properly which can be rather distracting to the reader and extremely distracting when attempting to share a children’s book, often with a lot of pictures, with your little one. Kudos to Dweck for paying close attention to such details.

As a bonus, the book includes a few fun facts about cats as well as a “find the object” activity. This is a great book to share with little ones and one that I recommend.

A Blue cat?

Little Mandy wants to adopt a "special" cat. But in a roomful of cats, Mandy is confused. They all look the same, how is she ever going to choose a "special" cat? But then she spies a cat snoozing on a blue mat. And blue being her favorite color, she chooses "Blucy" for her new pet!

Like all other cats, Blucy is mischievous, adventurous and spontaneous. But little did Mandy know that "Blucy" is really special! She has a talent that no other cat has :)

At first Mandy tries hard to figure out what would make Blucy happy. She tries training this stubborn cat, but Blucy was on her own! However will Mandy and Blucy become friends? Did Mandy make a mistake in picking Blucy for her pet?

Blucy is a wonderful read aloud rhyming book by Julia Dweck. The pace of the book is gentle for the very little ones. The illustrations are gorgeous and bright, just right for younger audiences. The rhyme and rhythm of the story is engaging and fun!

"Although she hated pudding, Blucy loved a Jello mold,
She wanted only BLUE - the other colors left her cold!"

We loved reading this story over and over again. DD loves cats and she had a ton of fun reading through all the shenanigans that Blucy is up to. Cat owners will instantly relate to the "first" days of having a cat at home.

Recently I reviewed Mary Had a Sleepy Sheepy by Julia Dweck. Blucy is another great eBook by the same author.

I think I'm finally a convert for eBooks, especially for children. While I do love the smell of a book, it's so much easier to read on an iPad with a toddler rather than pull out a huge book and flip the pages, wondering if they're going to get excited and rip a page. (Yep, we had that happen with a library book recently. Eek!)

Blucy is the story of Mandy and the cat, Lucy, she adopts from the animal shelter. She starts out as Lucy, but quickly becomes Blucy because when she gets excited she turns blue!

"If Lucy got excited or she felt some sudden mood,
The fur upon her body changed to match her attitude.
So Mandy named her "Blucy," as it seemed the thing to do
Since Blucy was the only cat whose color changed to blue."

This is another great one from Julia Dweck! The illustrations are beautiful and colorful. And, I love her books because the rhyming style just flows so easily when I read it out loud to my little girl. She loves this story and frequently requests it at bedtime. She is turning into quite the cat lover.

The author, Julia Dweck, has several other eBooks as well. I've read a few, and they are all as entertaining as this one.

Like her other books, the author includes fun facts about cats and some fun activity pages at the end of the book. I have to admit this is one of my favorite parts of the book. Even grown ups can learn something new!

Disclosure: I received this book for review purposes, all opinions expressed are my own and I was not paid or influenced in any way.

Mandy chose a pet at the local pound. Her new cat was very special and she knew it right away. What Mandy didn't expect was that her cat would be so finicky and moody.

If Lucy got excited or she felt some sudden mood, the fur upon her body changed to match her attitude. So Mandy named her "Blucy" as it seemed the thing to do. Since Blucy was the only cat whose color changed to blue.

In an attempt to train her cat, Mandy realized she had no control over Blucy. This little cat wouldn't eat her food or drink her milk and would hide from Mandy. Blucy was rebellious and would get into mischief. She would draw on the walls with blue crayon, swing from the rod holding the blue shower curtain and even jumped into the laundry basket of blue jeans. What will Mandy do to get her blue cat under control? Should she choose something blue and tasty? You will have to read the story to find out.

Young readers, especially those who love the color blue, will love this tale of kitty control. This story could also be used as a tool for children who are first time pet owners. Blucy teaches tolerance, patience and friendship. The back of the book has fun cat facts and activities for readers. The illustrations are marvelously colorful, although there is a lot of blue, and invite young readers to share in the adventure. Simple sentences make for a fun read for any beginner.

"Blucy: The Blue Cat" by Julia Dweck is about a housecat that happens to change colors to match its mood. Because 'blue' is a color that cat seemed to particularly prefer, and Lucy was the name her caretaker, Mandy, had christened her with, she just naturally came to be called 'Blucy'.

Blucy did not like to eat at dinnertime, so she would run and hide, blending her color to match the background, and making her that much harder for Mandy to find. Mandy soon realized Blucy prefers food that is blue. She even would dive into her blue Jello and swim around with the fruit chunks.

Blucy was a handful of mischief, playing with food, swimming in the pool, hiding in the flower beds, and drawing self-portraits on Mandy's bedroom wall. She pulled down the curtain rod, and tore up the clothes in the laundry basket. She even ripped the wrapping off some gifts that were hidden in the closet!

One day Mandy filled a bowl with blueberries for Blucy to eat; Blucy loved them! Now Blucy doesn't run off or cause trouble like she used to do. She has learned to trust Mandy, as Mandy began to love Blucy more and more.

This is a cute story, with lots of fun pictures children will enjoy seeing. The illustrations are done very well, and I think young children will enjoy every aspect of this story.

Blucy : The Blue Cat by Julia Dweck is the story of a bluetastic cat named Blucy and how her loving owner finally finds a way to connect with this very rare kitty.
Picture
Mandy got to choose her very own kitten from the pound. She didn't know how she was going to choose, but finally decided on an unusual kitten whose fur changed to blue. She named this special kitty Blucy.

Mandy tries hard to train Blucy, but Blucy has a mind of her own. She likes getting into mischief and hiding among anything blue. However, Mandy remains patient and loving with her fury friend and soon Blucy loves her back.

Blucy's silly antics will amuse young readers and leave them yearning for a Blucy of their very own. Mandy's calm and loving nature teaches children how to care for animals and be good pet owner's themselves.

The illustrations by Erika LeBarre are charming and capture Blucy's coy attitude as she frolics in a sea of anything blue.

I recommend picking up a copy of Blucy: The Blue Cat.

5 STARS!! Blucy: The Blue Cat written by Julia Dweck and illustrated by Erika LeBarre is a wonderful rhyming story about a peculiar and particular newly adopted cat named Lucy. Mandy loves Lucy, who turns blue, who won't eat typical cat food, who camouflages herself in all things blue. Blucy is no easy cat, but Mandy stays true and never quits looking for a way cat and girl can live happily ever after. My son told me before demanding I read it again, "This is a wonderful book!" I agree. The vibrant illustrations are a true delight and work perfectly to push the story forward. The rhymes are a treat for the reader. The message is touching; no matter how difficult, naughty, or fussy Blucy proves to be, Mandy loves her. To top off a great read, author Julia Dweck includes a cat trivia page and an activity hidden picture page. That's plain cool! (Please note: I received Blucy by the author for an honest review. Thank you for the opportunity!)

Blucy is a cat but a cat like no other, as Mandy found out when she brought her home from the pound.

Blucy: The Blue Cat is a story about a cat who wont eat normal food and turns blue, thus camouflaging herself from Mandy. Mandy doesn't give up and still tries to train and feed Blucy until one day she has an idea and she gives the cat some blueberries to eat - something blue!

From that day on Blucy rarely causes trouble and comes when Mandy calls her.

This is a wonderful little story brought to life by the vibrant illustrations used through out the book, it was a delight to read and my 4 year old love it!

At the end of the story there are some cat-tastic facts and a hidden pictures page - which is a great wee added bonus.

Blucy has really beautiful illustrations. The shades of blue used by the artist bring the cat to live, plus the illustrations look cute. The story written is rhythmic and perfect for kids to enjoy. The concept of this storybook is interesting, a cat who changes color and who loves the color blue. The character is created with these interesting details so a lesson can be imparted to the readers.

Kids learn about patience and caring with the girl but, what do they learn with the cat? The cat as a character I wasn't crazy about. The cat keeps doing a lot of things without been explained that his behavior was inadequate. It seems like he is awarded with a free licence to do everything he wants. When I was reading it to one of my girls she told me: "That's a bad cat".

One thing I truly loved about the book is the section at the end where we can find Cat Facts and Hidden Pictures. These have a high fun factor for kid readers. My kids liked the book and these sections.

Julia Dweck has always amazed me with her talent at writing children's books and Blucy is by far my favorite one yet. I laughed and giggled my way through the whole book and had to read it again several times for the pure joy of the story. The illustrations are fabulous and very colorful and I found myself staring at each page as I read and just loved the details in the illustrations. This is a RECOMMENDED MUST read story that adults and their children will fall in love with. This book will become the best bedtime story that children will want to hear over and over again. I can't wait for my niece to be old enough to hear and love this story as much as I do. Thank you, Julia Dweck, for the opportunity to read and fall in love with this phenomenal children's classic!!!

Julia Dweck has created yet another smash with Blucy, the Blue Cat. This time she partners with amazing illustrator Erika LeBarre.

Mandy finds the perfect little cat at the shelter when she realizes something very unique about Blucy... the cat is given that name after discovery of her unusual talents. Blucy learns to eventually gravitate towards Mandy, and in the end, Blucy finds a special bowl of fresh and yummy treats crafted especially for her.

The illustrations by Erika LeBarre are bright, vibrant, and inviting. The rhyming of the text throughout the entire book will grab children's attention and leave them wanting to turn the next page as quick as possible. My daughter absolutely loved this book, as well as many of Julia Dweck's wonderful books.

I highly recommend this charming book for children 2-6 years, as well as any cat lover, for that matter.

I was given an E-ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Mandy picked out a cute little kitten named Lucy from the pound. Mandy soon learned that Lucy was very different from other cats. Lucy's fur would change color depending on her mood. Mandy decided the name Lucy just wouldn't do and changed it to Blucy since she could turn the color blue. Mandy soon finds out that owning a pet can be a bit of a chore. Not only is Blucy different than the average cat, but she can be a handful. She refuses to eat and makes a mess of everything. Mandy soon figures out something special for Blucy and their relationship begins to bloom and Blucy learns to stay out of trouble.

Great rhyming children's read. My 6 year old son and I enjoyed it very much. Purrr-fect for cat lovers. Also has some interesting cat facts at the end.

Ms Dweck and Ms Lebarre have created a delightfully humorous read that will no doubt capture the attention of every little mischief maker. The rhythm and rhyme are wonderful and flow so beautifully throughout the book. The illustrations are absolutely exquisite. I honestly wish I could purchase every one of them to put upon my toddlers walls. As soon as I started reading this book for review, the toddler spied the illustrations and rushed across the room to see them. We had to read Blucy several times and her eyes were glued to each page as it unfolded.

We thoroughly recommend this beautiful book which I think will capture the attention of children ages 2-6.

You'll Be Tickled Pink After Reading Blucy!

Mrs. Dweck has done it again! The cover is magnificent, and children will delight in Erika Lebarre's illustrations of the trials and tribulations of a girl and one very 'interesting' cat.

As the author of a picture book about an adopted pet, I appreciated the fact that everything was not immediately hunky-dory when young Mandy brought her new cat home. Sometimes, it takes a lot of patience and love to learn what makes an animal happy and feel content, and Blucy puts Mandy through a series of wacky situations as the two get to know each other.

Blucy's fun rhyming text, vibrant illustrations and underlying message will captivate young children everywhere.

As a fan of Julia Dweck's books, I was eager to read Blucy, and was provided a copy for review.

"Blucy", written by Julia Dweck and illustrated by Erika LeBarre is an adorable e-book about a cat whose fur changes colors to blue when she gets excited. Written in a delightful rhyming style, any child will be enthralled with Blucy the cat and probably want one for their very own. The cat's young caretaker, Mandy, tries everything to get her cat to eat her food, and all Blucy wants to do is create mischief by hiding among blue objects like jelly beans and jello. The illustrations are so well done and in such vivid colors, you practically forget you are reading an e-book. I would recommend this book to anyone with elementary aged children. The book is humorous and imaginative and I have no doubt that kids and adults would enjoy reading it quite often.

Another purrfectly delightful book from Julia Dweck. An imaginative and enjoyable book even for beginner readers with wonderful rhyming words and an easy flow (while keeping interest with wanting to know more - yet intrigued and amazed at the colors and illustrations). Both of my kids found Blucy to be a lot of fun and quite the mischievous cat. The illustrations are fabulous and bluetiful! My daughter is in love with them and Blucy (she's determined to have a blue kitty now *lol*)! I highly recommend this as with all of Julia's books for encouraging reading (along with falling in love with reading) in a book that pulls all ages of readers into this blue world from a child and cat's peculiar perspective.

As soon as I received this e-book from the author, my boys and I dove right in! And who wouldn't? The cover illustrations are magnetic! Julia Dweck takes you on the perfect adventure for a child, adopting a cat. Filled with fun rhymes and silly situations. Little Mandy finds the perfect kitty and names her Blucy. Mandy quickly learns that Blucy is extra special, unique and a bit mischievous. In the end Mandy and Blucy learn they are perfectly imperfect and just right for each other! The illustrator is Erika LeBarre and she did an amazing job bringing the story to life in vivid colors and imaginative designs. This book is perfect for a wide range of audiences, and will become a staple in my homeschooling preschool curriculum!

I'm a sucker for cat picture books, so was attracted to this book, Blucy by Julia Dweck, when I saw it offered as an ebook for 99 cents. It's the story of a girl named Mandy who chooses a cat named Lucy from the pound who is different than all the rest. It's different because when it becomes excited or feels some other mood, it becomes blue, thus the name Blucy.
Young kids will like the rhyming story and all of the trouble Blucy gets into. Honestly, itt's not one I'll seek to buy a paper copy of for my library (unless I can find it as cheaply as the ebook). It just didn't thrill me all that much, and not something I would teach from. It's a cute story, though, with a satisfying ending, so my young students will enjoy hearing and seeing the story.

Wow! This is the way all ebook picture books should be: full-page color illustrations with superimposed text.

Mandy chooses her new pet cat, Lucy, but soon nicknames her Blucy, short for Blue Lucy. You'll see why! Blucy is a finicky, mischievous cat, but which cat isn't?

Julia's rhyming text is fun and not too simple, challenging enough to keep young children coming back time and time again. Erika's delightful illustrations virtually leap off the page, further bringing Julia's words to life. The book includes a page of fun cat facts and a picture puzzle at the end.

Absolutely brilliant.

I received this book for the purposes of providing an honest review.

Blucy is a beautiful e-book that would make a great read aloud for children at home or in the classroom. It might be too difficult for really young children to read by themselves, but the way that rhyme and rhythm are used throughout, the book just begs to be read aloud. This is the aspect of the book that would also lend itself to classroom use because you could use it as a mentor text when learning about rhyme/rhythm. I think any cat lover (or blue lover!) can relate to some of Blucy’s antics in the book or the beautiful blue shades and will be laughing along with Blucy’s silly stunts. All in all, a very fun book!

I found this to be an entertaining story about a cat that changes her blue color depending on her mood. I sat down and read it with my daughter, and we were both amused by Blucy's antics. You never knew where she was going to show up next! The illustrations were very nicely done and the rhyming verse was easy and fun to read. I recommend this to any parent for their child that loves cats, rhyming, or just a good book.

I think that each book Julia Dweck writes gets better than the last. Blucy is quite charming and sweet. A blue cat that can easily hide and blend in with blue surroundings is definitely something new for children's books. That's what I love about picture books. There is no limit to where an author's imagination can take you.

The illustrations are gorgeous. Erika Lebarre has a lovely style that is perfect for children's books. Her artwork is clean, visually appealing, and easy to follow. I like the soft edges and smooth contours. The bright colors also make the pictures very appealing to young children.

Mandy finds an unusual cat, Lucy, whose fur turns blue when she arrives at her new home from the pound. Newly named Blucy (because of her fur color--so adorable!) Blucy camouflages herself and destroys things until Mandy makes a discovery.

The illustrations are FABULOUS (5 stars). The rhyme kept the rhythm almost the whole time, great job Dweck. I loved the beginning and ending best (5 star work!), and even though the middle dragged a tad, the illustrations kept me turning the page and the lovely ending surprised me.

Overall, this is a 4.5 star book and I highly recommend it.
