Slow Burn

Rate this book
Detective Douglas Brody has only ever known the life of a cop. Raised strict but fair by his police chief father, he joined the academy right out of school, climbed the ranks hard and fast, and now works homicide for the City of Charleston. The job is his entire life. For years it’s kept him happy enough to minimize the side of him that craves what he believes is wrong. An accident on the job puts him on medical leave and everything in Brody’s world changes. He has to prove himself once more to be best cop in the department, all while dealing with Zack – his persistent, sexy, and out of the closet physical therapist.

Zack is tan skin, big grins, floppy hair and tackles his job with the same full-blown enthusiasm he does everything else. When the “patient from hell” is thrown his way by another PT who can’t handle him, Zack is committed to achieving the impossible. His new patient is a head strong and hot as hell homicide detective, who oozes as much resentment as he does sex appeal. Any involvement with a patient, especially a man who is so deep in the closet he can’t see light, is something Zack swore he’d never do. But Brody slowly proves too much to resist…

3.5--HOT--Stars!!!

That was so cute....and sweet. Pretty low in the angst department.

I just had a big 'ole grin on my face while I was reading this.

My favorite thing about this book....the SMOKIN'HOT man lovin'!!

See....

So hot!!!

Was this predictable?

Do I care?

Brody is a cop who gets injured on the job and has to go see a PT. Enter Zack. Both Brody and Zack are gay. Zack is gay and proud...Brody not so much.

Neither one thinks the other is gay but over time and working so close together things start to change. They keep things on the DL.

Zack doesn't want to be Brody's dirty little secret but can't walk away...

Don't worry Zack...I wouldn't be able to either.

Did I mention how HOT this was???

Anywho....there was a case going on in the background that Brody was working to resolve....I kind of thought it was a bit under-developed but

Semantics.

Then you have your classic boy won't open up to other boy....pushes him away scenario. Something bad happens to the boy that pushes away causing him to realize how wrong he was. Boy goes after other boy to tell him how wrong he was and they live happily ever after.

By the way, this was really

Oh did I already say that??

Let's get this out of the way: I LIKED this book. And I recommend it for a light, hot, not-too-angsty read. I just didn't LOVE it like I loved Morgan's first book, The Rookie Move . Two cops are better than one, I guess.

In Slow Burn, one of the MCs, Brody, is a cop, a homicide detective. He's closed off, deeply closeted, and obsessed with catching a serial killer. Tearing his ACL chasing a potential suspect puts him out of commission and into physical therapy, where he meets Zack, a PT, who is laid-back, happy, beachy, and very much out.

The two guys don't hit it off right away (Brody is a huge asshole with a chip on his shoulder), but the "slow burn" is definitely there, and eventually they get to it (mostly because Zack is ever patient and so damn nice). The lovin' was steamy. Morgan covers all the basis there. We get some background information about the guys, although I'm not sure Zack's issues with his dad really added much to the story.

Some of the bickering back and forth between the two MCs felt a little off, a tad juvenile, something teenagers would do vs. two guys who are in their late 20s/early 30s. I did like Lamont (Brody's partner); he was funny and snarky. Lamont's wife is referred to several times, and she seemed super cool, but we never meet her, just hear about her, which made the story feel less fleshed out.

But the real killer (pun not intended) for me was the serial killer plot. It lacked credibility and felt like an aside, and the lightening-fast resolution, which triggered an epiphany for Brody, felt gratuitous. A simpler case or even an unexpected shooting could have created more realistic drama. Serial murder cases are HUGE with media coverage and bureaucracy galore (usually the FBI is involved too); this one seemed an afterthought and was just too damn easy.

The ending was a decent HFN. It wasn't quite strong enough for me to bill it a HEA, since Brady was a real headcase, and it was clearly going to take more than a month for him to get his shit together. I was a bit disappointed with the epilogue, truth be told. I wanted to see the guys better settled, but I am a wanton floozy when it comes to HEAs.

Oh, and the cover is pretty fabulous. Extra half-star just for that!

Now this may seem like a glossy, half-assed review....but there is so much more I missed. Like the broody asshole behavior, the hilarious banter, the bit of mystery. Reading wouldn't be fun if my review did all the work. Go read the book.....DO IT! And then come back and thank me.

Brody is a thirty-three homicide detective. He’s gay, but he’s deep, deep in the closet. Nobody knows his little secret. An accident on the job puts him on medical leave, so he is forced to work with a physical therapist, Zack.

Zack is gay too, but he’s out and proud. He’s a good therapist and he’s determined to help Brody.

At first Brody is an asshole. He’s uncooperative, he’s making no progress and he’s a pain in the ass patient. Zack is used to people like Brody who weren’t at their best, he’s not intimidated by big, cranky detective, even if he knows Brody will be difficult.

That’s no secret Zack is attracted by the handsome detective, but he doesn’t know if he is straight or gay. Brody is attracted too by Zack, even if he doesn’t want to and he tries to fight it. Growing up in a house where his father was kinda homophobic and thinking he will be judged by the other cops because he’s gay, he prefers to be in the closet. He even tried to be into women.

Brody sessions with Zack ends, but he hires Zack to get him back in shape because he wants to return to work ASAP. Everything changes between them when they share a kiss, but Brody is still afraid and he still doesn’t want to get out of the closet.

So what will happen? Will Brody accept who he is? Will Zack and Brody find happiness together?

I liked this one! The plot obviously wasn’t something new, but it was a nice, fun, easy read with both main characters likeable.

I liked how Brody changed and in the end accepted that who he is. The ending felt a little rushed and the story was a little predictable, but who cares?! I enjoyed all the banter between those two and the sexy times between them. The mystery aspect felt a little flat for me, so I didn’t care much about it, but it didn’t bother me either. Low in angst and drama, this was a sweet little read.

Overall, a nice read!!

Oh my, this was a HOT one folks! It's not going to stand out as a fall-all-over-yourself love story for the ages. Or a deep, meaningful philosophical book that made you see the world differently. Or a thrilling mystery that twisted your brain with a fabulous plot that blew your mind. Or even the absolutely best sex you've ever read in all your years and all the hundreds/thousands of M/M romances books you've read. The best way to describe this book and why I loved it so much is that it was the perfect storm of mild-angst, hot sex, sweet romance and lovely HFN/HEA. Nothing too lacking and nothing too over-the-top. Just the right balance to make it an exceptional read, 5 stars and a spot on my favorites shelf.

MC Detective Douglas Brody has a huge chip on his shoulder about being a gay police officer and also a dislocated ACL. He's a cranky son of a bitch and takes awhile to grow on you. Brody is assigned to tall drink of water and free spirit Zack as his physical therapist. They work together to get Brody back in shape so he can return to work and a specific case he is obsessed about. Brody remains an irritating asshole, but Zack likes the challenge and the shape of Brody's ass, so he continues to work with him. They finally express their mutual sexual attraction and then things start to get REALLY interesting. The best part of the book, IMO, is that Brody is so ashamed about being gay that, even at 33 years old, he is very sexually inexperienced. Zack takes it as his personal mission to teach Brody just how great sex between two men can be and WALKS HIM THROUGH EACH STEP VERBALLY as they have sex. Dirty talk just took on a whole new meaning! Fuck... SO DAMN HOT! Turned my crank like nobody's business.

The two MCs of course run into the usual relationship issues when one wants to stay in the closet and one doesn't and there's also the side story of the serial killer, both of which were fine and not over powering. Everything was just perfect. A perfect storm. I can HIGHLY recommend this book for M/M romance fans.

Now who's going to help me beg Sam B. Morgan to write another book?

Mystery sucked....the serial killer plot was lame. The author didn't even bother to flush it out but Brody and Zack were good together once Brody got out of his own way. Hot sex makes everything better. Plus Brody is basically a 33 yr old virgin and has his butt secks cherry popped splendidly. *high five*

If you're looking for a mystery this isn't for you but if you like a grumpy cop in denial and a toppy sweetheart with lots of dirty talk this is your cuppa.

This is the last straw.

This is the seal.

Thus ends any attempt to read popular m/m.

I am now about 15 to 20 books in of "meh", "blah", " PWP", and "this is utterly ridiculous" in the last month to six weeks alone.

As long as it's burning up the shelves and starring on my home feed I am staying away.

There is nothing here, this book is empty, the 'story' is trite, and it features popcorn writing.

This review is posted on Way Too Hot Books.

My last few f-m books were kind of disappointing, so I decided to seek consolation in the mm genre. I chose this book, because the title and cover looked pretty convincing, don't you think? And I can't say the fact that men in uniform where involved again wasn't helpful ;). It is my first mm read by Sam B. Morgan and I'm happy (and relived) to say that I liked it and then some.

Fast-paced, suspenseful, emotional & way too hot.

3.5 slow-burning, but, oh, so good stars. The title is indeed perfect for this book, because from the moment the two MCs met, their working relationship starts slowly, but deliciously burning to something more.

Brody is a homicide detective, a man of action who can be pretty intimidating. He really doesn't do sick well making him a real pain in the ass or better say "patient from hell" for every physical therapist trying to help him with his recent knee injury. He becomes especially cranky when he gets for his next PT a full-blown enthusiast Zack and it has nothing to do with Zack's enthusiasm. Zack doesn't get intimidated so easily, as the matter of fact he is more than determined to get Brody in the best shape of his life, if only he wasn't so distracted by his hot body while at it.

description

"Physically attractive was one thing. Zack saw good-looking men every day, and, while awesome to look at, it wasn't everything. A hot bod, even one like Brody's, wasn't unusual in his line of work or out on the beach. But attractive and dedicated? Unexpectedly funny and dedicated to his work?
Brody was a potent and dangerous drink."

One guy is deeply in the closet and doesn't do relationships, the other is long out of the closet and super outgoing who wants more than a roll in the sheets. How can they make this, whatever it is, work? As I already said- the relationship between the MCs was the best kind of slow-building, push & pull relationships and I liked it a lot.

They start as doctor & patient, soon become friends and then grow to something more, both of them are afraid to label. They were very likable as MCs, especially Zack, while Brody was more one of those mysterious and hard to get types. The chemistry between them was scorching and between the sheets they were explosive. There is some drama and angst in-between, but it was rather light.

While witnessing the development of the romance we also get as a side, suspenseful story one of Brody's biggest cases "The Strangler". I must admit that the romance kind of put this part of the story in shade for me and that I was more interested in them two together than Brody trying to solve the biggest case of his life. That's why 3.5 stars.

For all mm fans: If you want a fast-paced, suspenseful, sexy and light on the drama mm read with men in uniform as leading characters- try this!

“You trust me, right?"
"Yeah."
"Then trust I’m going to make it good for you.” Good? More like he’d do his best to make it fucking magic. “ I…I know you want me to lead, but you’ve got to let me.”

I'll be honest, this short novel took me three damn days to get through. I'm sure it's a perfectly good book from start to finish, but I just couldn't get myself in the right head space for reading it. Instead, I found myself reading the first 60-70% of this book on autopilot, processing the individual words and sentences, but not really absorbing them. I'd sort of "come to" after a few pages and realize that I couldn't remember anything that had happened. I always backtracked, but I'd inevitably space out again a few pages later. Thankfully, I was in a different head space this evening and really enjoyed the communication and emotion in the last third of the novel.

So... I'm going to give this book a 3 star rating, but with a "it's not you, it's me" caveat; if I'd read it at any other time it probably would have been a 3.5 or 4 star read for me.

There is entirely too much book here with entirely too little story. When a tale revolves around sex, I expect it to be a relatively short read. Not a full-length novel with aspirations of being taken seriously while simultaneously depriving the reader of any real plot in favor of sex scenes. Because that's the impression I get here; that Morgan wanted to craft a fleshed-out novel about an out and proud PT and a deeply closeted cop, and he wanted to make the story matter... But he failed to make it so. Both Brody and Zack have serious issues that are briefly brought up and half-heartedly discussed, then brushed aside in favor of more sexing, and hey, I love sex, but this book could have been so much more had Morgan dedicated the time necessary to crafting the characters he had in his head. The serial killer plot line, which was supposed to be a huge factor both in Brody's personal life and his professional one, was rushed and not given any justice in regards to how heavily it weighed on the beginning and middle of the story. In the end, it merely served as a convenient tool to spark Brody's personal epiphany, and if that was all it was ever going to be, it shouldn't have been granted so much force to begin with.

Despite all that, I enjoyed reading it. I liked the chemistry between Brody and Zack, and their HEA was sweet. It didn't fully live up to its potential, but it was a decent read regardless.

I liked the book. I don't know if a lot of people will as it has a lot of typical m/m elements in it which have been done time and time again. Sweet guy meets gruff, in the closet cop. Hate at first sight that, of course, changes to love. Could have done without the serial killer plot because it really didn't add much, but I liked it enough to read and finish.

Brody is a tough - and very closeted - homicide detective. After being injured during the pursuit of a suspect, he gets put on leave while he recuperates and part of that recuperation is undergoing a lot of physical therapy. The problem? His new PT is everything he likes in a man and there isn't much more that Brody hates than that.

Zack is that new physical therapist and a no nonsense kind of guy. He's been told that his new patient is a royal pain in the ass, but it isn't like that would be a first. Then Zack gets a look at his new patient and is thankful the guy is such a pain. The guy is just Zack's type. Except that Detective Brody is either straight or he's closeted. Zack's been there, done that and got his heart stomped on in the process. He doesn't want to go through that again.

So what are a couple guys to do? (yeah, I can think of a few things, too) They're attracted to each other, but neither wants the other to know. Besides, it would be more than unprofessional for Zack to get involved with a patient, even if they guy was interested. And Brody feels that coming out of the closet, even a little bit, would kill his career.

This story was a slow burn, just like the title says. It takes time (and maybe an argument) for Zack to draw Brody out of his shell and admit out loud that he's gay. And it takes more time for Brody to actually accept it. Brody is stubborn, and more than a little bit used to walling himself off from anyone that might get to know him. He's terrified that anyone might learn his secret.

And Zack has issues of his own. His father abandoned his mom, him and his two sisters and has very little to do with his children from his first marriage only talking to Zack when he wants something. And the last closeted guy Zack let himself fall in love with threw him over for a woman. So he definitely has some abandonment issues. Who wouldn't?

I enjoyed the story and watching Brody become more comfortable with being gay was worth waiting for. It's apparent that Brody doesn't have a lot of sexual experience (at least that wasn't rushed bathroom sex) and when he experiences what sex should be like, he blooms. The fear is a constant companion, though, and he's got plenty of issues to work through, even after the HEA. Still, I think he'll get there.

It took its time but was none-the-less still enjoyable! Zach is the physical therapist assigned to assist Homicide Detective Brody in his recovery after an accident on the job. A job that means everything to Brody. A job that is not exactly "gay friendly".

Brody is a little jaded and gruff and still refusing to acknowledge who he truly is. Zach on the other hand is warm, funny and a true care giver.

There is a some suspense/drama with Brody's mission to find a serial killer. This was a nice little aside to the real story between the Zach and Brody.

“Then trust I’m going to make it good for you.” Good? More like he’d do his best to make it fucking magic. “I…I know you want me to lead, but you’ve got to let me.”

A non angsty m/m romance which was definitely hot .... especially the hallway, the shower scene oh and definitely the bedroom!

4 stars for a slow burn that is not slow at all :)

At the risk of damning with faint praise I will still say that this book is so much better than it has any right to be. Anyone who is a little familiar with the way tropes work and how Romance is constructed can read the blurb and have an idea of what this book is all about.

And then Sam B. Morgan kept doing everything RIGHT. Right from the start Brody and Zack behave like adults and professionals. They aren't instantly panting after each other during the PT sessions, hell you would be hard pressed to even know either of them is into guys after the first session. I didn't know I was over inappropiate boners in my M/M until they weren't any to be found here. By the time things heat up they deal with it by TALKING about the conflict and then just get on with it.

It's kind of sad that a well executed Romance that does nothing more than follow the expected story beats had me so excited simply by having the protagonists not behave like utter idiots.

The next point may be weird but hear me out. I actually liked the fact that the procedural aspect played out in the background of the Romance. Too often you can just absolutely tell that an author didn't bother to do enough research and the mystery part of of these kinds of stories usually suck.

I can appreciate an author who is aware of their limitations and goes for the story they really want to tell. Which was a mature love story with a little bit of thrill thrown in to keep things interesting.

A good 3 1/2 stars. I love gay men in uniform. Oh hell, I love men in uniform. Brody was injured in the line of duty and needed PT. He was a full-of-himself jerk. Zack was his Physical Therapist. Both men were hot, but Zack seemed to have more sense. He was out. He liked the look of Brody.

Something Zack had spent the last hour ignoring was now completely undeniable. Detective Brody was built like a brick house. Body to die for. But he was a patient, probably straight and homophobic as fuck. Zack was not going down that road again. It was full of potholes and deadly drop-offs - all of which he'd hit and fallen over before, with the scars to prove it.

No friggin' thanks.

Brody is not homophobic. No he is a deeply closeted cop. All he has is his job because he can't see any way to have more. His family has been cops, homophobic cops of the old school. He is attracted to Zack but needs to hide that fact.

He felt like the biggest kind of fool standing on one foot, clinging to a man like Zack. He tried not to cringe at the feel of Zack's arm beneath his T-shirt, the solid curve of his shoulder. The cringe wasn't about disgust - at least not at Zack. The cringe came from fear and loathing. Fear that Zack...anyone...might see what Brody thought about this. What he really thought about Zack's sculpted arms or the rest of his tall, athletic build. The loathing was because he needed to focus on more important things. Work. Not some hot guy with great legs.

That was why Brody didn't think about it. Because if he didn't think about it, he wouldn't wonder what Zack felt like underneath his clothes. He wouldn't imagine his hands, how rough or smooth his touch might be. He wouldn't question that mouth. Would it be demanding and harsh or giving and soft? He wouldn't question that mouth. Would it be demanding and harsh or giving and soft? He wouldn't have to be frustrated at himself for wondering or ashamed of his cowardice for doing nothing about it.

There is a mystery, a case that is Brody's case. That is the way Brody sees it. He wants to get back to active duty. To do that he must pass his fitness test. He needs Zack to get back into shape. Brody's last therapist gave up on him because of his bad attitude. Zack won't accept that attitude.

The mystery is woven around Brody's and Zack's relationship. I enjoyed this read. Great literature, no. Good story of a difficult relationship, yes.

A nice and relaxed romance, low on drama and angst. Which is suprising for a novel about a closeted cop. Enjoyed it - quick and easy, doesn't overstay it's welcome.

It's well-written, the romance isn't rushed or too fixated on mechanical sex. The explicit scenes were pretty hot and actually served a narrative purpose.
I enjoyed the characters and the Coming Out scene at the end left me with a smile on my face.

The only thing I didn't enjoy was the mystery plot. It felt rushed and the resolution was a bit unsatisfying. I probably would have enjoyed it more, if the author had instead shown a bit more of the aftermath of the Coming out.
But it's a solid read, all in all.
There's really not much more to say about it.

This wasn't a bad read, but there was really nothing awesome, nothing to set it apart, either. Just your basic run of the mill deep in the closet cop who meets the guy he just can't stay away from. The serial killer story felt like a bit of an afterthought. You'd expect to see more people to be involved if it was really a serial, FBI or a big task force, something beyond just a couple of homicide dicks working the case. I also thought that, once they did start having the hotsecks, Brody just went in too easy, I expected a bit more angst and self denial, and less hot sex, joking, and snuggling afterwards.

Recommended for anyone who wants an easy, not too deep, out for you story, who doesn't care to have much focus placed on the mystery plot in the story.

I really enjoyed the first half of the book, but the conflict in the second half seemed stupid and forced and also, I didn't really feel the love between the MCs. I like Morgan's writing style and simple yet fulfilling stories, but I wasn't convinced this was a case of love instead of lust, especially from Brody's side, so I can't rate it any higher:(

*** Detective Brody, 33, has hooked up for quickies, but never has he felt this way about another man. It is a deeper emotion, the hottest sex ever, and it also feels right, so natural. Physical Therapist, Zack, about 25, is a big guy, and "out." While providing therapy for Brody's knee injury, the guys get off to a rocky start. Brody's angry at the world and hates being away from his case he's working on. There's a killer on the loose.
Zack and Brody continue his work outs and can be sassy and funny with their banter. The friendship grows and becomes more. More than Brody has ever felt, and he can't resist Zack. Zack initiates the first kiss. These two are so hot together. Their super hot sexiness is full of emotion and power.
The guys need each other and look forward to their times together. Their slow burn romance is simmering sexiness, and is stunning to watch. Of course we have conflict with Brody and the homophobic police force. Also, each man feels they aren't good enough for the other. But, the strong, determined men don't give up. We get thrilling police action, investigations, hot sex, and deep love !
Highly recommend ! ENJOY !

My first book from Sam B. Morgan and it was fun. How could it not be when you have a detective who is in the closet (oh how I love my closet boys) and a laid back Physical Therapist who is out and toss in some attraction, the whole opposites attraction deal and some UST that pretty much fuels this story...
Detective Brody, detective for the City of Charleston, blew out his ACL on the job. Went by Brody, uncooperative, making no progress, all around pain-in-the-ass.

Detective Douglas Brody is hurt while working a case that is important and becomes personal to Brody; not one to just sit back and twiddle his thumbs he wants to get back on the job and he wants it now. After scaring off former Physical Therapists, he gets assigned to Zack who may look laid back at first glance but can certainly hold his own against the gruff and ornery detective. From first meeting these two fight their attraction, Zack knows that their personalities will crash and burn and of course Brody isn’t out unless it’s in a bathroom stall with a nameless guy on his knees… so how can this work?
It had to be men, and Brody hated himself for not being able to control. He hated that he was taught to hate himself and anyone like him before he’d ever understood who he was.

Um, yeah. How is this going to work with Brody in the closet but there is this whole UST thing happening between them? I hear beaches have a certain attraction…maybe? Hmm…well then. I liked how patient Zack was with Brody in the beginning. Even during their PT sessions he knew how to handle the man and get him to cooperate and that bubbles over into their non PT relationship. He realizes the Brody is in the closet and even though he has made promises to himself otherwise, he just can’t let what is between them get away. The patience and acceptance of what he was going through makes Zack almost a candidate for saint hood at times, though I did love how he would go toe to toe with Brody and call him out.
“I’m not playing mind tricks on you. I think you are doing a good job mind fucking yourself.”

“Fuck you!”

“You could if you weren’t such an asshole, punishing yourself for being gay and so damn deep in denial you can’t seen see straight much less be straight.”

Ouch Zack! But Brody, oh Brody my goodness. I did feel for the boy as I usually do with my boys in the closet. I understand the mentality of the “boys club” he has been a part of for so long and having the memory of his father wrapped up in with that as well. Not a fun place to be and it’s a fine line he has to walk. That line of being true to your self and wanting that acceptance, but at what cost?
God, he’d imagined this. Dreamed about it and then wanted to beat himself up for it. But how could this be wrong? Everything about it felt so right.

I liked the story line and the way the boys came together. The side, yeah it felt like a side story with the case Brody was on when he was injured didn’t hold much interest for me. I was hooked with the sexy times they boys had and was fine with that. I admit it. I have no shame.

Slow Burn was fun and light introduction into the writing of Sam B. Morgan. There were heavy issues in there but they didn’t weigh the story down. It was a standard boy meet boy, boy likes boy, boy pushes other boy away, and they hit a few bumps in the road as they find their way back to one another story, just as a good contemporary romance should be. Was this book predictable? Sure it was. Did that take away form it being a fun read? Not one bit. Will I read more from this author? Of course and I have her first book loaded and ready to go.

A "Live Your Life, Buy The Book" Review

I was a little worried about not liking this after the first ten pages. Brody comes off as a hard-core jerk. I thought it was too much but he tones it down as the book goes on. We start to understand why he’s that way. So, I don’t know if it’s because I just got over it or it just made more sense. Maybe both. Either way I did enjoy reading this book. Zack is impossible not to love. Brody just took a little longer.

Brody is a homicide detective working on a serial killer case he’s been on since he was a beat cop. He takes the responsibility of catching the killer very seriously. Chasing down a bogus suspect when he bolts leads to a blown knee which requires surgery and physical therapy.

Zack’s new client is a bit of a hard ass. It’s no wonder his coworker dumped him on Zack. Good thing Zack loves a challenge. He manages to break through to Brody by calling his bluff and making him realize he can get him back on active duty. They work hard and get to know each other. When the mandatory PT time is over, Brody even hires him as a trainer.

Both men are gay. Zack is carefree and out of the closet. Brody is deep in the closet and ashamed of it. Zack is attracted to Brody but thinks he’s straight until some close stretching out of a cramp makes him see something. Eventually Brody and Zack give in and they start a secret fling. Zack tries to keep his heart out of it. He’s been burned by a lover in the closet before. Brody sees his job as the most important thing in his life and sees coming out as an end to that. It’s a mess but neither guy can resist what’s happening between them.

I really liked this book. I liked how Zack slowly knocked the ice off Brody. He went from broody asshole cop to laughing and kissing a man he liked. He actually came alive when he was with Zack. It made their connection that much more beautiful. It’s impossible not to love Zack. Once he got Brody going their banter was fun. They flirted and laughed. It was really enjoyable to read about. The sex was hot! Brody hadn’t ever had sex in a bed or really done much foreplay. Zack helping him experience those things was so sexy. They were also playful about it. I love the combo of sexy and fun in the bedroom.

The murder mystery was secondary. I don’t think I ever really cared or worried about that part of the book. The baddie wasn’t exciting because there was really no build. It just felt resolved to be resolved. I’d recommend this one for the characters and their story but don’t expect a great murder mystery.

True rating upon reread is 4.25 stars, just because there was a thing or two I would have liked elaboration on [and the Epilogue, while definitely an great HEA, still felt a bit rushed to me in that I would have liked things to be a bit more settled in the grander scheme of things], but I am keeping the rounding up of stars as is, because the story overall was genuinely wonderful (I couldn't put it down), the writing was terrific, the grammar was on point, and the sex scenes were fucking SPECTACULAR!!!! Very HIGHLY recommended indeed!!!

I'll elaborate on a few points soon!!!

Thoughts definitely coming SOON <33333 :-)!!
I absolutely adored adored ADORED this book and am gladly throwing FIVE shining and wonderful stars at it <333333!!!! Absolutely FANTASTIC book!!! Highly highly HIGHLY recommended!!

// I couldn’t possibly copy and paste all the scenes and moments that I believe to be shared, because they’re all so amazing!! But THIS is just a delicious example::

“Another slow circle around the rim, and Zack pressed the tip of a finger in to the second knuckle. “You’re so gorgeous like this, Brody.” He pulled out slowly, circling and gathering lube before entering the warmth again. Faster this time. Making it feel like fucking. “I’ve pictured you so many times. Pictured this ass in so many different ways.” Slow out, fast in. “God, I can’t wait to fuck you.”

I just adore how the author does this::

“Yup. Zack had fallen in love with Brody. Completely and stupidly. The best kind. The kind that made you want to torture yourself with slow sex just so you could find that rhythm that made your partner go—

“Oh God!” Brody bucked forward, hands grabbing new fistfuls of sheets before shoving his ass right back toward Zack. “Fuck, yes! That! Zack…” He made it sound like a warning if Zack didn’t repeat immediately.”

3.5 stars

I have to say I was struggling to get into this book, especially at the beginning. I felt no connection to either of the main characters and irritation had the upperhand.

Still as I am not a person who takes the easy way out, I kept going and I have to be honest it improved a lot. The further the story I got, the more I felt myself get involved, trying to find out what made Brody tick.

Zack is a great guy; there is nothing bad to say about him at all. You might even say he is too understanding and too kind when it comes to Brody, but I admit it works.

The best part of this book is definitely the last quarter, when the relationship between Brody and Zach makes a significant turn. From this moment on the story really steps up, adding some drama to it but most of all interesting material to read and to get involved in as a reader.

If I look to see what part I like and what got me interested I have to say it took quite some time for that to happen but then on the other hand the last parts and the epilogue was totally worth the read.

Overall I settle for a nice, not too complicated story that takes you a bit to get into but in the end leaves you feeling satisfied with the outcome and the conclusion.

Sidenote: Gorgeous Cover!

This story is about Brody a police officer that is completely dedicated to his job and in particular to a case that he caught since his rookie season. Brody gets injured at work and requires surgery and then PT ( physical therapy ) ... That is when he meets Zack , who happens to be his new therapist , due to the previous one being unable to deal with Brody. Zack is a passive , full of patience kind of guy. He takes in strides Brody's bad moods but at the same time promises to make Brody better being hard to him with the rehabilitation. Brody decides to ask Zack after PT is done if could train him due to his desired to go back to active duty faster than normal. They start training together and things are changing, the looks , the way Brody is opening up slowly. Brody has lots of demons , fights his desires but finally gives into Zack. Many feelings develop and they almost loose each other due to Brody's fears. The book is also really interesting when it comes to the crime that Brody has been investigating. Great story.

Okay, this is the second book I've read by Sam B. Morgan. And, I LOVED it. Brody took some getting used to. Well, it wasn't so much "getting used to him" as it was him cleaning up his act. Man, he was a PRICK at the beginning. I had serious doubts that I could even like him. Happily, I eventually did. Zack was wonderful from the start and remained so. The chemistry was strong and the back story riveting. I read this book in one sitting.

Now, I'm hesitant to call SBM's writing formulaic because it's only been two books. Plus, "formulaic" has some negative connotations and there's nothing negative here. So, I'd rather say it's like sharing a great recipe: hot man-on-man lovin', enough angst to satisfy the emo in me, swoon-worthy romance, and HEA.

Bottom line: SBM has a new fan! Can't wait to read more of his work. Recommend!
