Welcome to Carnage

Rate this book
He is the night's reckoning, the shadow that haunts my dreams. This year, he wants more than just my fear.

Halloween is a celebration of the bizarre, the unexpected, the dark. And I've always had a twisted enjoyment that dances with the macabre.

Things turn sinister when every guy I date ends up six feet under, courtesy of an obsessed stalker. Like a ravenous beast, the murderer hides in plain sight. His identity? None other than Nyx, my brother's best friend and my secret admirer. A familiar face is now my enigmatic predator. His presence is inescapable, his desire for me insatiable. A force that would cut down any who dared cross our path.

Like any monster, he's ready to kill for what he desires. His hunger for me is an intoxicating blend of fear and excitement, an adrenaline rush I've never known. The night of the Carnival is looming, and with it comes his promise. I will be his. I should run, escape... but the dark allure of being his prey is an addiction I'm not ready to shake off just yet.

Welcome to Carnage, where love is a twisted game, and survival is the only victory.

I was expecting this to be good based on the cover and blurb and have been looking forward to reading it since it dropped, but sadly it was too cheesy for me, and not in a good way.

It almost read like a copy paste of some other Halloween novellas, except some of them did it better. My main problem here was the writing (didn't work for me at all) and how rushed everything was near the end.

Like , what was that about? He went too far off the rails, and not just in regards to what I mentioned either, but for example I would've checked out then, to be honest, but it's not a long book so I figured I might as well finish to see where it would go.

It tried to be dark and sweet at the same time and it just didn't work. I will however be checking out the author's Christmas novella which will hopefully be better.

I wanted to love it

The premise is really good. Boy she’s loved since high school has been in love with her and stalking her since they met. He’s a violent psycho to anyone but her. K, cool. It was just so… unrealistic. It didn’t seem to flow well and it’s like this author wanted to throw as many different kinks in as possible without it making sense. Knife play, blood play, breath, primal, breeding, mask play, etc. Also it’s cool she’s a little twisted too, but for her to be totally ok with all these things being a V has me rolling my eyes.

He was so obsessed with her being a virgin, but if he was or not was never stated. It implied he was considering how creepy and intense he came off, obsessed with her since high school, but how skilled he was smexually, knowing just the right thing, was what made it less believable, especially if he was in fact a 21 yo virgin. The smexy scenes were also so so just with the believability factor.

Grammatical errors and back and forth on little things that have already been stated- like his height- drove me crazy, as if two people were writing this book and just pushed chapters together.

Is it worth the read? Why not? It’s only 150 pages.

I know. I’m judging myself!

The smut-aholic in me wants to give this 5 stars. I mean 🤤🥵🤤🥵🤤🥵🤤. But, the story itself is DARK! And off the rails unhinged. Definitely needed some editing. Characters were mostly certifiable. Regardless, it was a quick, hotttttt read.

I thought this was longer based on the TikTok review…was literally only 100 pages and just smut and very dark who ch isn’t bad but he literally killed men that asked her on dates…was weird

Loved it! Nothing like a moody, possessive psychopath in mask 😍 brothers best friend is always a trope that tugs at me. Quick and easy read and also enough spice to keep you reading.

Oh wow! Absolutely loved this book!

Before I get into how obsessed I am with the mmc I have to say the writing style is great and it’s a really well done story overall. It’s a novella and even with the short length I was left very satisfied.

Now onto who we all read these books for, the psycho mmc. Nyx is the super quiet, over the top, jealous, possessive type. So much so that he unalives anyone the fmc, Avina, dates. Oh and he’s also her brothers best friend and she’s had a crush on him forever AND he rides a motorbike 🫠. So many boxes ticked already!

Two years ago Nyx corners Avina in a hall of mirrors on Halloween and gives her the best O of her life, he makes it very clear that she belongs to him. He wears a ghostface mask (✅) and a voice distorter so she doesn’t realise it’s actually Nyx until she confronts him during the present time. Avina ends up having a moral dilemma as she knows he’s a psycho that unalived her last two dates but she’s actually kinda into how much he wants her. Honestly me too babe.

On Halloween Nyx shows up at the carnival wearing the ghostface mask and he takes her to his cabin on his motorbike, chases her through the forest and this is where the spice picks up because of course our guy has a breeding kink 🥵

(There is a HEA and no cheating or ow drama)

Honestly so many red flag boxes ticked for me with this book! Great writing, nice level of spice and a super hot mmc. I think this is the authors debut book? Can’t wait to see what else they write!

Noooooo, nope. Im all for some stalking and a bit of murder (in books) but i couldnt finish this. Hate is a strong word, but it may explain my experience. Im sorry Selena, but maybe work on your writing? This is not at ALL realistic and definetly dosnt make any sense. Everything happend so fast, and still, i feel like nothing hapend at all... read the first 68 pages, so take this with a grain of salt, but oh man, was this a hard read.

I rarely rate books that I don't like. But the clear rip offed storyline and dedication and even the cover was enough for me to write the review. Do better in the future.

❗️SPOILERS ❗️

🖤 "We've already passed the sign for crazy town and are heading into psychotic territory, but I don't give a shit. It feels right. Me and him. Us. As if we were always meant to be."
_____________________________________
It may be "Christmas season" but I'm all about a Halloween novella all year round. This was really a quick read, written in dual POV. I love a possessive MMC, whose got murder in his eyes for anyone who looks at her, and a FMC who loves him especially because he'd kill for her (and has.)

✔️Masked man
✔️Run
✔️Dirty Talk
✔️Touch her & 💀
✔️Breeding kink?
✔️Possessive MMC
✔️Virgin FMC

🔥 "Hiding never works, and I know I'll find her. Perhaps she wants me to find her. Perhaps my girl is getting just as fucking turned on as I am."
_____________________________________
Two years ago Nyx and Avina had a "moment" at the local Halloween carnival. She didn't know who he was, but had been dreaming about her masked man since. When she starts to date, her recent dates start to drop like flies. Nyx senses darkness in Avina, and that's why he's drawn to her, he finally lets her know he's the one whose been killing her dates. Thanks to her brother and her best friend, she attends the carnival again where Nyx chases her and when he captures her takes her back to his cabin. I love a good chase! And he takes care of her afterwards (Swoooon.) The next day he takes her to buy an engagement ring - gotta love the extra crazy. Or when you know you know?
_____________________________________
🔥 "I want to mark her as mine with my cum in her cunt and bruises on her thighs. And my initials carved in her pretty little ass."
_____________________________________
Okay so, as much as I am all about the Nyx and his dirty mouth... when she tells him that she's pregnant he says "But, we never. I mean, I didn't think..." What the hell does that mean? He spent most of his time inside of her talking about cumming in her and breeding her... So what does he mean by we never what? Used condoms... and then I didn't think?? That's how pregnancy happens? That was weird for me.

🖤 "I've known for a long time that Avina is a dark as I am, plagued with a tarnish on her soul she'll never be able to scrub clean. I don't want to scrub it clean. I want to make it darker. I want her to take her rightful place by my side, with my cock breaking her apart every night."

I mean, what a romantic??

Welcome to Carnage is a Halloween novella that blends the brother's best friend trope with the stalker/killer trope in a reasonably successful way, although some parts felt just a little bit rushed and lacking.

When Avina's best friend Luna sets her up on a blind date, it ends in disaster when her date is murdered. Not realising she's the reason he was killed, she agrees to a blind date with another man, and again, he's murdered. Unsure of why the men in her life are being targeted, she's on edge, but this isn't her first encounter with the darkness, as she had a moment two years ago with a masked man at the Halloween fair in town, a moment that ended with him warning her that he'd kill anyone who touched what was his, but Avina hasn't heeded that warning.

Her masked man soon reveals himself to Avina and shows her the extent to which he is willing to go to claim her for himself. It just so happens that Avina has had a crush on her masked man for years, and while his darkness should terrify her, there's a thrill there too that excites her.

The author spends a lot of time building up the tension between the two characters, with Avina trying to deny what's happening, so there's a lot of push-pull between the two. There's some very heavy kink involved in this story, such as primal blood and breath play, which is unusual as Avina is a virgin and has no experience at all; however, she takes to it like a duck to water; there's no gradual introduction.

The reason I found the story a little lacking was because there was so much time spent building up the game of cat and mouse between the two main characters and the things that were going to happen between them that when it did happen, it became almost anti-climatic because the establishment of their relationship was over and done within a few pages. I wanted to see more of the non-sexual moments between them where Avina shows her acceptance of his darkness and embraces it fully.

“All you need to know is you belong to me now. If I so much as see you going near another man, I’ll kill him, understand?” The hardness in his tone makes my heart race. “If another man touches you, I’ll murder him.”

Halloween is supposed to be filled with innocent scared and thrills, yet the small town of Carnage, Utah it'll show to be a very deadly combination for three unfortunate men. Nyx Charlson, a bad.boy from the start who burned his parents alive in a house fire as a young child finds himself.drawm to his friend Pierce's sister like nothing else. Avina vividly still recalls the night two years old where a masked stranger cornered her in the house of.mirrors and brought her to a startling orgasm that she could never forget. Plagued for two years with dreams of this man in a mask, she me er expected Nyx to be behind it all. Every date she's been on leaves the boy killed in a savage attack, something the police still can't solve. Learning the truth about the depravity and darkness within Nyx should've frightened her away but instead drug her in closer. Confronted by her feelings to him, the two have their relationship move very quickly and find themselves embracing a future. Discovering she was pregnant, she's both terrified and excited for this new chapter with Nyx.

I’ve never felt this drawn to someone. It’s like a sickness, an obsession. And I fucking love it.

I love these dark twisted tales. Welcome to Carnage where this blind date may be your last.
Avina and her brother Pierce lost their parents a couple of years ago. Avina has gone on exactly two dates and both have been murdered. She is innocent, but has dark twisted desires. The police thinks someone is obsessed with her.
Nyx is Pierce’s best friend. He is hot, tattooed, quiet, rides a motorcycle and is an all around bad boy that most of her friends say is creepy. He is dark in every sense of the word. Avina is drawn to him and has had a crush on him since high school. She soon realizes that they are playing a deadly game and she can’t decide if she is scared or turned on. What happens when she gives in to her darkest desires?

This book is great. It is dark, twisted and I am here for it. Expect danger, stalking, murder, pain/pleasure and off the charts steam.

Invest your time in a better story

I was interested in the premise of the book, but the story just falls flat. Characters are very 1 dimensional, and there's never any real conflict.

Killed some people? No worries, I'm smarter than everyone else and will blame the mayor's kid who's never mentioned before now! We just had sex for the first time? Great, let's get married immediately! Your brother won't like it? No problem, he'll get over it if you agree with me!

It was all just too easy. The story probably could've been better if the author had taken the time to flesh out the details and really paint a picture, but ultimately, this is just a poorly written dark romance with poorly written spice.

Don't even get me started on the editing errors. It was a super short read, but I personally would've preferred to invest those 2 hours in a better story.

it’s a decent read

Decent read with a sprinkle of thrills

Avina isn’t the typical annoying fmc so props to the author for that. Nyx is a good little psycho.

The steam is there but I was expecting more, I guess, than one and a half semi steamy seggs scenes. Though a short read, it really needed a lot of editing and some clarification. I don’t know if the author really understood the
Brëëding trope or what but that was a little jarring to read it used in a way that sounded like a misunderstanding. It was a little rushed, but it’s a novella… still, some things were left wide open.

For these reasons I can’t recommend it to others but if you read it, it’s not a bad book. It’s just not where it could be. Hopefully the author earns enough to get an editor in the future.

**NO SPOILERS**

Got a little add on TikTok and was super excited because whoever made the add made it sounds so good so I had high hopes going in.

I want to preface by saying U understand it’s a short erotica story and wasn’t expecting a TON of depth, but she really gave us nothing.

I was bored. The writing was so unfortunately awful. Full of not only bad grammar, but just overall not good writing. This book included multiple of my favorite tropes so I put aside the poor writing hoping the smut was going to make it worth it in the end because I see that pretty often in short smut novella, but boy was I mistaken. Full body cringing at almost all spicy scenes. This man is a wanna-be Sade Meadows.

I tried this novella out because I was hoping it would be everything "Haunting Adeline" wasn't for me, and in one way that worked out in my favor but in others not so much. My biggest and maybe only issue with "Haunting Adeline" was the non-con/dub-con which I am not a fan of and Welcome to Carnage did what I wanted in that situation. In both books, we have a female character who gets excited by fear so it makes sense why a stalker would become their love interest. And I can get behind that as long as the FMC is also into it. In HA, it was very obviously dubious consent from our FMC until she couldn't get over her attraction, I guess, and I didn't love it. All I needed from it was for her to say something like, "I shouldn't be enjoying this, but I am." THAT'S ALL! And that's exactly what Selena Winters did in Welcome to Carnage and I was so thankful for it. What I didn't love and what broke the rest of this book was how one-dimensional and nieve/dumb our side characters and even main characters are. The entire story outside of the romance was ridiculous and very convenient. So while I loved the execution of the dark/taboo romance the writing just wasn't there.

This was a fast halloween, spicy read.

Please read the trigger warnings if you need those. Your mental health always matters most - includes but not a full list - murder, forced play, pregnancy, blood, and branding.

This was a very hot and spicy halloween read. Who doesn't love a stranger in a halloween mask? One who will kill for trying to take what is theirs. Quick enough for a one night read, but long enough, it doesn't feel overly rushed or not enough character build up.

Can't wait to see what other spiciness this author releases!

4 out of 5 stars.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I didn't even get to the sex. 😭 This was so bad.

Avina should have been written as turned on and horny for the brother's crazy best friend, instead she is shaking in her boots the entire time and thats all they talk about.

She talks about how upset she is and how scared she is but she doesnt do anything the cops suggest to protect herself.

At that point her internal monologue should have been about excitment and arousal for playing chase with Nyx, not dread and scared out of her mind.

It was not an enjoyable read. She didn't want to be there. She hought Nyx was hot but his personality wasnt attractive to her. Why would an author write her character like that?

Oh the depravity. Why am I so obsessed? Nyx is drool worthy. That’s pretty sick, isn’t it? Halloween has always been my favorite holiday. Ive always loved the ability to hide behind a mask, metaphorically for the most part. But lord have mercy does this book make a physical mask seem like the most sensual thing possible. The way Avina refers to her masked man makes it impossible to ignore. Then her dates turn up just as tragic as she was told they would. How was she supposed to know he was serious? She waited a long time for him to come back to her. He proved he meant everything he said no matter the cost.

pain and pleasure are two sides of the same coin

4/5⭐️
3/5🌶️

The pleasure and pain are the main reason the book was good and not so good.

1) I did like it
2) it was short and quick with the spice.

BUT, it was almost too fast. There is that perfect balance one has to have and welp this was just too much for the pages. That’s all I can really say. I think a longer more drawn out story (with SOME added detail) would really help.

All in all. It was good. I’d recommend for a spooky season short read!

it’s a mess

I will say that “dark” isn’t my go to genre but I’ve read some pretty good ones. This was not good. The attraction didn’t make sense, the FMC didn’t make any sense and honestly it needed to be longer to make sense. The FMC was “dark and twisted” supposedly, but why? I also feel like the cops would still have questions for her after everything.

The author was like let’s make him psycho and her dig it and that’s suppose to make a good story. It doesn’t. The spice wasn’t even spicy either. Honestly wouldn’t recommend on any front.

We love a man who will kill literally anyone who goes on just one date with the girl he’s obsessed with.

I have to say, Selena Winters does not disappoint. After reading Stranded and Welcome To Carnage, I can say I have a type and that is unhinged, murderous, stalker men written by Selena.
I love Halloween themed novellas and this did the job very well.

Nyx is my latest fictional obsession and I’ll do anything to have him😭
The spice was on point and the plot was fantastic.

A thrilling horror romance! When your stalker is even closer then you realize!
He’s been obsessed with her for years, just watching and waiting. At the Halloween Carnival he gets his hands on her and tells her she’s his and no one else can touch her!
2 yrs later… Avina has longed for the masked man ever since that Carnival night. He’s never shown his face so she tries to move on with her life and start dating. Every guy she dates ends up dead.
He will claim her fully Halloween night at the Carnival.
This was a good read! I definitely recommend adding this to your Spooky Season Tbr! I gave it 4 Stars 3 Spice
