This is one of the sweetest Amish romances that you'll ever read. Anna Helmuth is quite the matchmaker and this time she's planning on getting her granddaughter, Beth hooked up with Tyler Yoder, who was jilted by his last choice of bride.
Our hero and heroine are both a bit shy of marriage/love. Beth is out of an abusive relationship, not only with her departed husband, but also her inlaws. As you discover more and more about her husband Amos and his mom and brothers, you can't help but feel terribly sorry for her. Her son Toby, is the most precious thing. I loved how he calls people he loves "Mommy."
Tyler is the best hero ever, as far as Amish romance is concerned. He is all kindness and goodness. Even though he doesn't expect to find love after his last relationship went awry, his feelings for Beth are there almost from the start. (Even when she's hitting him with sunflowers).
When Beth refuses Tyler's proposal, she offers to find him a bride. Her matchmaking is hilarious, and almost as funny as the old Amish bachelors that come courting her. Vernon is an absolute hoot, and he doesn't seem to realize that there is someone else in her heart.
This is an absolutely wonderful read for the holiday season and a great book for lovers of Amish romance.

Huckleberry Christmas is book three in the "Matchmakers" series by Jennifer Beckstrand. Even thoug the first books had some issues, I am still so charmed by the world building of a Amish romance, with the strong sense of community, faith centered traditional living and non preacy feminist dialogue. I adore the way that this author is able to show strength of women without being on a soap box, where it just feels so down to earth and genuine. What really ended up working for me in this one was seeing the romance develop between these two and a fun trope that I see very rarely, I just don 't see it common in romance like I used to. We do deal with some challenging issues that the author was willing to tackle, and I really admired the way in which it was handled.
The set up of the story is where our heroine, Beth, is a widow and a single mom. She is also recovering from an emotionally abusive husband although its hinted at that there was more than that. Then we have our hero, Tyler, who has recently been burned and jilted at his own wedding. Beth's grandparents are determined to matchmake them together, but Beth is against any marriage in the future. She blames God for what happened to her, and the abuse that she suffered. And even though Tyler appears to be honest and good, she doesn't want to suffer again. But as Tyler and Beth grow closer, they will be tested when Beth will have to reconcile her past and learn to trust again...
I absolutely adored just about everything about this book. Its my favorite so far in this series and I had such a fun time seeing these characters come together like they do. It definitely kicks off with a great start, and I adored the way that they instantly have a connection. Now even though I didn't always approve of Beth's action, I definitely understood it from a certain point. It did get a bit dragged out in the end, but I loved how the hero stands up to beth in what he deserves and it helps Beth to reevaluate her decisions and come to terms with her issues and reconcile with God and her faith and learning to forgive and fight her battles. I did enjoy how protective Tyler could be while at the same time, he let her fight what she needed to.
There was so many laughs in this one, despite the difficult issues that come into the story. I delighted in seeing the manner in the way of the sense of family and community, the way these grandparents attempt matchmaking these two together and the atmospheric vibe of Christmas time. It just had me wanting to put some Christmas carols on and put up some mistletoe. I really enjoyed seeing some characters from previous books, and the way the child aspect was implemented into this one here. The more I read this author, the more I become hooked on her stories. I can't recommend this one enough if you want to get a solid Christmas romance or just want to try out a Amish romance. I will say that even though this is closed door in the heat level, I will say that there are some amazing kissing and affection scenes portrayed.
Overall I found Huckleberry Christmas to be utterly delightful, charming in its portrayal and genuine in the character building and the romance that will speak deeply to your heart!

Now a widow, Beth’s marriage was so terrible that she never wants to marry again. But Tyler has other ideas, and tries his best to change her mind. Thus begins a tug-of-war tale that has its share of ups and downs for both. Sprinkled with humor and dosed with romance, this Amish tale may be a bit sappy at times, but still is quirky enough to be enticing.

Anna and Felty have gotten two of their grandchildren married so they move on to another grandson. Beth comes from a bad marriage with a small son and they plan on fixing her up with their grandson Tyler. Beth doesn’t want to get married again and has to learn to let go and all fall in love. It really shows how awful some of the Amish we think of as nice can be.

Love, love, love this series. Normally I save "Christmas" books for that period of the year but I was reading this series (and not in the right order) and couldn't wait for a couple of months to see what this book was about.
Who cannot love the Mammi & Dawdi in this lovely Amish series. Mammi's the matchmaker. She is 100% sure she can find a spouse for ANY of her grandchildren and sees it as her mission to do so. She is a delight & a treasure to her family -- and to us the reader. Why? Because she is a hoot! I laugh and chuckle my way through this series. And I think you will too.
If you love Amish books, you will want to read this whole series.

This was sweet (which I expected) and funny (which surprised me). I enjoyed the characters a great deal, and I found it refreshing that neither one is expecting much in a relationship. Tyler had had his heart broken in the previous book, and Beth, a widow, is finally free of her cruel first husband. I liked her cynicism and Tyler’s stoicism. Anna’s bad cooking and wonderful matchmaking add just the right amount of pizazz to the storyline. Lots of fun.

What a great story. This book had lots of twist and turns. Makes you ask yourself several times "What". I just love how Jennifer makes you fall in love with all the characters. This is an excellent series. I'm always left hungry for some Huckleberry Pie.

I am so glad to have discovered the writing of Jennifer Beckstrand because reading one of her books is pure pleasure. In fact, I can hardly read without a smile on my face. This is the third novel of Jennifer's that I've read, and I find her writing very refreshing and enjoyable. Filled with charming characters, sweet romance, and gentle humor, Huckleberry Christmas captured my interest from the first page as I was transported to the Huckleberry Hill community of Bonduel, Wisconsin , and the ending left me looking forward to Anna Helmuth's next matchmaking effort. Although part of a series, it can easily stand alone.
The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill is a delightful series about an elderly Amish couple who decide to meddle in the lives of their relatives in order to help them find suitable mates. Felty and Anna are at the heart of these stories, but much more than mere matchmaking, they have the unique ability to gently impart spiritual wisdom into the hearts of their loved ones, wisdom that comes from a lifetime of walking with God. Felty and Anna are two very memorable and beloved characters.
Huckleberry Christmas shows a refreshingly different side of the traditional Amish setting - one infused with humor, where scarves are knit in bright colors contrary to the usual style, and where not every Amish woman is an excellent cook - Anna's green gelatin mixed with pickles and her runny rice pudding, for example. Jennifer's straightforward writing style and rich characterization are so easy to connect with. The serious theme of emotional abuse is also brought in and handled well. In one particular scene, Anna points out to Beth: "You shouldn't let Amos ruin the rest of your life. . . . Do you really want to give his memory that much power?"
With his giving and caring nature, Tyler is one of my favorite heroes. Beth carried a lot of emotional baggage from her previous marriage, where she had lived with a constant criticism that eventually destroyed her trust in men and her faith in God. I love the advice Beth's mom gave to Tyler: "Beth won't jump into the pool until she's checked to make sure it's filled with water. Then she'll have to be certain the water's warm. And then she'll want to know there's a gute swimmer to catch her. You'll have to be patient."
Spiritual themes flow throughout the narrative in a natural and beautiful way. One message that always speaks to me is the importance of trusting in God alone - because people, no matter how good or well intentioned they are, will invariably let us down. Also touching was when the words from O Little Town of Bethlehem - "How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given" - caused Beth to reflect that "God's gifts were given so quietly that many people didn't even recognize blessings when they came." I hate to imagine how many times that has been true in my life.
So often an author will rush a book's ending, but not so here! Jennifer took the time to give Huckleberry Christmas a delightfully satisfying ending which readers will enjoy and appreciate. I'm eager to see what Anna and Felty are up to in Huckleberry Spring, which releases in February 2015. Highly recommended to fans of Amish fiction. 5 stars based on the enjoyment factor.

Caroling in the snow and a hayride with hot cocoa....what could be better? It sounds like the perfect Christmas celebration to me! Beth and Tyler are Mammi Anna's latest matchmaking pair as Mammi is sure that they belong together but there's a problem. Beth endured an emotionally abusive husband and she does not feel that she can trust another man not to treat her the same way or worse. Tyler is in love with her and proposes but she turns him down. Beth has found a way to provide for her and her little red-headed cutie with her sewing and feels that she does not need a man to come in and ruin it all. I loved this Christmas book! I felt like I was right there with the characters as Tyler made bacon-pancakes for Beth and Toby. Little Toby adores Tyler and calls him "Mommy". Beth has a strong sense of family and loyalty and this is something that is very important to me as well. Beth is a very spirited, opinionated character and she is hard not to love. I rate this book 5 stars and highly recommend it to readers. I think I need to go and find some huckleberry jam and biscuits and coffee and pretend I'm back there! Care to join me? Back for another wonderful visit with Annie and Felty Helmuth, and Amish country in Wisconsin. Annie is back at her matchmaking for her grandchildren, and next on the list is Beth, and Annie-bannanie has chosen a fellow we met in the last book Tyler Yoder.
Now Beth has come to stay with her Grandparents, she is a young woman with a darling little boy. What we are about to find out was that she had been in an abusive marriage, and doesn’t plan to even put herself in that position ever again. She has been terrible hurt and needs a lot of healing and learning to trust God, not herself.
Then we have Tyler, was he hurt when his girl ended up with the Helmets grandson? Will he be interested in Beth? You will be surprised at how his feeling develop. Had to love this fellow and how he kept himself, and how deeply he followed his faith.
There are a few of Beth’s decisions that will make you cringe, and sometimes I felt like shaking her. I had to wonder if Beth would survive some of her former relatives. Come back again for a wonderful and joyful visit with the Helmut Grand/Great Grandparents, sure would love to have them for mine.
Throughout the story I felt God’s hand there and leading them to end up at the right spot at the right time. What a great story of Faith, and how it is shared in this community.
I can’t wait for the next book in this series, and there is a little tease offered!

This is one of the better Amish Romance series out there, especially if you are not interested in books that preach to you. This series contains just the perfect blending of humor, romance, religion and deep feelings for your fellow man. I am a non-believer and I just love this series. I am never made to feel preached to but I do get a greater understanding of the bible the way the Amish understand it.
This book follows the general recipe that the previous books have set up. We have the Helmuth's - wonderful, loving, elderly (not so you'd really notice though!) grandparents who are looking to marry off their grandchildren. They have some success. In the last book we meet Tyler Yoder who had been jilted by his intended and that is who Anna and Felty target this time. The Helmuth's cleverly (or just Anna I should say!) plan to get Tyler and their grand-daughter Beth, who is a widow with a very young son, together. Little did Anna know that her grand-daughter swore off marriage and this is where the fun begins.
I think what I really like is that this isn't such an Old Order family, so some of their actions and even the way they talk is very understandable to even us 'Englisher's'. The character's are well fleshed out and you feel as if you are part of their family, enjoying and rejoicing with them and hurting with them and for them when they hurt.
I am so glad that there are still so many book yet for me to read in this series.

This story was very good. I liked that it dealt with this topic in a cozy but realistic way. I wasn't even upset with the MC for her stubbornness. I was also happy to see Tyler get his happy ending. I only wish I got updates on the other matches that occurred in this story, maybe they're in the next book.
Recommend to others: Yes. Usually, Christmas books are hit-or-miss but this one could easily be the best book in the series so far, it's second for me, be it could be number one.

I cannot tell you how much I love this series. Huckleberry Christmas is no exception. I found the story fun at times and heart wrenching at others. Personally, I really could relate what Beth was going through. A great Christmas Amish read. I would highly recommend it for anyone's Holiday reading.

Now that Anna Helmuth has two successful matchmaking schemes under her belt, she’s ready to dip her fingers back into the pie and get her granddaughter, Beth, married off. Unfortunately, Beth is a widow hellbent on never entering another marriage again after the terrible marriage that she’s survived through. Having just escaped her abusive in-laws, she’s staying with her grandparents while she raises her son and gets her dressmaking business off the ground. What she doesn’t know is that Anna is determined to match her up with Tyler Yoder.
One of my friend’s recommended Jennifer Beckstrand’s books and this is the first series that I’ve picked up from her. I thoroughly enjoyed the previous two books in the series, but I was excited that Beckstrand mixed things up a bit and had Anna trying to get one of her granddaughters married off. The previous two books follow two different grandsons and the young ladies Anna thought would be perfect matches for them. This time around, she looked at Tyler Yoder and knew he’d be perfect for her granddaughter, Beth.
Tyler is a character we got to know well in the second book. I like him a lot, so it was great that we got to see him find love again in this installment. We also meet a new character, Beth, who has just moved back home. Her previous marriage wasn’t a happy one, so I felt awful about the things that she had gone through. I do think that she needed more time to heal, but you know Anna. She gets something in her mind and runs with it!
It was great following Beth and watching her rediscover herself, her joys, and figure out what she does want from life now that she has a choice again. Her character development is very realistic, and I felt very invested in her as a character from the start. I think that she might be one of my favorite characters so far, right behind Anna and Felty of course, and I’m looking forward to seeing her pop up in future books in this series.
There’s also a nice touch of Christmas throughout the book. This is a particularly hard Christmas season for me since I lost my grandpa this year and dealing with Christmas music, movies, and such has been difficult. This book was light enough that I felt like I was in a warm and caring embrace while I read. I might’ve gotten misty a few times from my own grief, but I think this is probably the only Christmas media I didn’t run away from this December. This series has a huge heart and I just want to hang out in this world because there’s a lot about both Anna and Felty that reminds me of my grandpa.

OH MY! I don't know how Jennifer does it but each book just gets better. This is a beautiful story along with the humor she includes, you even get to envision eating a couple of Anna's wonderful recipes like grated carrots and bite-sized slices of dill pickles floating in a murky sea of green gelatin or rice pudding that tastes like warm milk and sugar, with occasional lumps of rice and cranberries for texture, lol.
I very highly recommend this book, this series! I am so looking forward to book four already, Huckleberry Spring, and number five, Huckleberry Harvest. The problem is I have to wait until February 2, 2015 and May 26, 2015, that just isn't fair, lol!

I just finished reading Huckleberry Christmas. I can only say 5 stars. It was so good. It was fun, entertaining and just plain enjoyable!
This book has the lovable Anna and Felty Helmuth back to their match-making antics. This time it's for their recently widowed granddaughter, Beth. Beth has a young son, Toby and lots of hard to deal with memories of a very difficult marriage. So hard that thoughts of another marriage are the last things on her mind.
Anna has plans for Beth and Tyler Yoder. But those plans are not Beth's as she tries to arrange dates for Tyler, thinking she may have gotten a good match with Erla Glick. But is this what she really wants?
Her deceased husband's brother, Isaac, is also after her heart, feeling that she has responsibilities to their family, especially since her mother-in-law is very ill. Beth does go to their home to help and Isaac tries to claim Beth as his fiance. There are lots of fun twists and turns in this book.
Now this is entirely an aside from what I have written. I am a German and we eat "Bratwurst", commonly called "Brats". I have a brother-in-law who lives in Wisconsin, in fact, close to Bonduel. He is always talking about Brat buns. Well, I tell him Germans do not eat Brats on a bun. It just isn't done...he says in Wisconsin they have special buns for them. This is an ongoing laugh we have together. Well, it must be a "Wisconsin" thing, because Jennifer mentions Brat buns in her book which is set in Bonduel, Wisconsin. I had to laugh at this part. She really did her research! And then the line which Tyler states, "It's a crime to eat a Brat without one." So of course, this was a little private joke just for me!
I am so excited as I looked at Jennifer's blog to see that there is another title coming out in the Spring! I can't wait to read that one, either. The others have all been so good.

I keep reading comments from my readers who are telling me that Huckleberry Christmas is their favorite book in this series… so I have to consider this.
I don’t know… Huckleberry Hill was my favorite… until Huckleberry Summer came out and I read it… then it was my favorite — I loved it when Lily called Aden’s dog Piecrust!
Now I have a new favorite… Huckleberry Christmas!

Not only does Jennifer continue to amaze us with her wonderful stories with Anna and Felty, but each book adds new characters to the ones we previously met, and the surprises, along with twists and turns, keep us glued to each book (or our tablets)!
Okay, on to the characters from Huckleberry Christmas!
Take a woman who has been submissive for too many years, with too many others taking advantage of her, of treating her more unkindly than they probably would their horses or other animals.
Yes! It was past time for her to finally begin to stand up for herself; only did she have to just when the perfect man appeared and wanted to help!

OK, no more hints or clues… but let me assure you that you’ll love this sequel; it’s absolutely wonderful!

What a joyful book, as Mammi Anna sets in for her latest matchmaking schemes. Beth a widow, who was married to an emotionally abusive man, is now determined to make a life for herself and her little redheaded cutie son Toby on her own. She doesn't want to take a chance on love again. Tyler is in love with her, he makes bacon pancakes for her and purposes, but she turns him down but offers to help him find a good wife. I laughed my way through this book as Beth learns to trust God and to love again. Mammi Anna and Dawdi Felty are grandparents that everyone would love to have. I could almost hear Felty singing as I turned the pages of this book and had the feeling that I was also there on Huckleberry Hill.

This was a nice Christmas read; especially for anybody who likes Amish fiction. Anna and Felty steal the show again in this installment of Huckleberry treasures. I wouldn't mind reading more about them; they actually give you no-nonsense conversations and humor that this story for me needed more of. Tyler spent most of his time trying to convince Beth that she was worthy and by the end I admit I was tired of her. What saved this book for me was Tyler's character. He was completely sure of himself from page one; and how refreshing to read about somebody who new what they wanted. I enjoy Jennifer Beckstrands writing; but I however liked the style she portrayed in her series Forever After in Apple Lake quite a bit more!!!!

As always, a sweet, fun story from Jennifer Beckstrand. I really enjoy Anna and Felty's shenanigans (though, let's face it . . . it's primarily Anna, with Felty just along for the ride).
I liked Tyler Yoder when we 'met' him in Aden and Lily's story, and it was only fitting that he get his own turn to have his match made by the couple on Huckleberry Hill. Beth was the perfect foil for him, and I giggled several times at the interplay between them.
However, all was not fun and games, and Beth, especially needed to learn a few lessons before she was free to move into the future God had prepared for her. One particular scene in the barn with Toby moved me to tears, as she made a realisation that would change absolutely everything.

This is the best book yet by Jennifer! What a wonderful delight that it is to read this Christmas book. Lot of laughter and cheering your

I am enjoying the silly antics of the matchmaking grandparents (and great-grandparents) in this light-hearted series. In this book, as in the previous two, the two main characters must humble themselves in a deeper relationship with their Savior before they can enter into the romance their octogenarian matchmakers have planned for them. In this story, Beckstrand adds forgiveness to the equation, causing her heroine to come even to the point of seeing the beauty in the ashes of her first marriage. I am always reminded of a scriptural truth, while laughing out loud at Mammi's and Dawdi's thinly-veiled plots.

What a marvelous Christmas book! Jennifer Beckstrand has written a clean, joyous, easy-to-read Christmas novel. The storyline is well-written, detailed, plus has great humor. I loved all the characters with their unique personalities. Descriptions in Huckleberry Christmas are so vivid, I could envision them in my mind. I truly enjoyed reading this book and Huckleberry Christmas is a book you will want to put on your reading list.

Sometimes reading a series is so much fun especially when the author writes the the series to build on one another and not just stand alone. Every time I pick up one of these books all the old friends return is small ways that they truly feel like a community. Tyler finally finds the girl from him with help of course from a meddling grandmother! His heart was growing in the last two books to learn what love looks like and of course when it wasn’t right. A young widow with a son of her own quickly stole a way into this very serious, very humble young mans life and gifts it brings are plenty.

This is book 3 in The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill series. You could read it as a stand alone but please don’t. It has become one of my favorite series!
Author Jennifer Beckstrand has created a wonderful Amish couple with Felty and Anna. They make me laugh, and they make me sigh with their warm hearts. Beckstrand has managed to bring depth to her characters in a unique way.
Between matchmaking antics, hurt and forgiveness, and of course second chances, this book kept me reading quickly to see what would come next. I highly recommend it!

I wish there were more Anna's in the world!! Maybe there would be a lower divorce rate in the world. I totally understand Beth's reluctance to open her heart but I also know fear of repeating your "mistakes".

Enjoyed the characters but especially the grandparents, Felty & Anna because were non-judgmental, positive people who saw the best in others. Liked the very different story lines & characters in this series. Have read 7 of the 9.

This is the second free book from Goodreads, it is to be released in October so I won't give the plot away, but I guarantee you will love it like the rest of the Huckleberry series.
