She’s the scientist who needs to make a new home for herself.
He’s the bumbling scoundrel who kisses her.
It was all an incredible accident. Miss Chloe Penbrook hadn’t meant to lose focus on her plans and allow the strange, but attractive man to kiss her. But they had ended up on the floor. And he had landed on top of her. And it was all so convenient to just…kiss.
It was all an incredible accident. Lord Barnaby Ashbourne hadn’t meant to stumble into her store, knock over her soap, and fall on top of her soft and supple body. But how could he resist fate?
Can Chloe work against the odds and make a new home for family all on her own? Or will fate intervene and show her that she doesn’t have to do it alone, that, in fact, love and life plans can go hand in hand?
This is the second book in the steamy new regency series, The Ashbourne Legacy, that follows the seven brothers of Snow White.
Read this novelette if you like sweet and spicy easy reads with witty banter and lovable and enchanting characters.

What makes people fall in love? Why do two people end up together? Every love story is unique and that's what I love to write.

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Readability: 📖📖📖📖 Feels: 🦋🦋🦋 Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔 Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡⚡ Romance: 💞💞💞 Sensuality: 💋💋💋 Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑 Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥🔥 Humor: Yes Perspective: Third person from both hero and heroine More character focused or plot focused? a mix but maybe more plot How did the speed of the story feel? fast and the ending is quite abrupt When mains are first on page together: 12% or so but it doesn’t feel that long because it’s a short story Cliffhanger: No this ends with a happily after Epilogue: No Format: voluntarily read an advanced reader copy from the author in e-book format (Descriptions found at end of my review)
Should I read in order? I believe all Piers’ work is the same ‘universe’ but this series is fine to start with. I think this book is okay alone, but probably a bit better having read book 1 – there is some character cross over and the books are so short it’s not a large commitment to get the back story. (The Blighter and the Bluestocking is book 1)
Basic plot: A chance meeting in a soap shop leads Barnaby to fall head over heels with Chloe
Give this a try if you want: - Regency (1816) - scientist/soap making heroine - Duke’s brother hero - Irish heroine/English hero - clumsy hero and a comedy of errors plot - medium to higher steam – 2 scenes (on the short side) within a shorter page count - novella (novelette?) length – it’s a very short story
Ages: - Didn’t see them mentioned?
First line: Life was always changing.
My thoughts: This one had some really cute scenes in it. But after my love of the first book in this series, I find I just wasn’t quite as satisfied here. I think the turn around for the heroine’s frustration with the hero was too abrupt for me and not quite as believable as book 1.
I think that it’s hard to get that all into a short novel, and this was still really fun and sweet overall and a nice way to spend an afternoon or before bed for a quick read.
Quotes/spoiler-y thoughts:Any mistakes/typos are my own
Content warnings: These should be taken as a minimum of what to expect. It’s very possible I have missed some.

Full break down on what my ratings above mean here: Overall: How I felt about it everything considered! Readability: How ‘readable’ was the book? Did I fly through it? Did I have to tell myself to pick it back up repeatedly? Were any passages confusing? (I will probably score like (1) is literally unreadable due to formatting/typing errors, etc (2) There were lots of errors that made it difficult to read OR It was extremely confusing and I had to reread passages to make sense of it OR I disliked it so much I had to bribe myself to keep reading (3) I didn’t really want to keep reading and would have preferred to abandon the read and start something else OR some minor continuity issues/confusion (4) I liked it fine, maybe a minor error or 2. I was happy to pick it up when I had time. (5) I never wanted to put this down. I thought about it when I wasn’t reading it. I hid in the bathroom from my kids to read. I threw inappropriate food at my children for dinner so I could read instead.) Feels: Totally subjective to each person but did the book give me any tingles? Any butterflies? Did it rip my heart out (in a good way?) Emotional depth: How well do I feel I know the characters at the end? How much did I feel their emotions throughout the story? Sexual tension: Again, subjective, but how strong was the wanting and longing to me between the characters? A book might have strong sexual tension without a single touch. Romance: Was there romance? Did romantic things happen? This can be actions/words/thoughts of the characters and again is subjective. Sensuality: This is how the intimate scenes are written. Kisses and sexual scenes – how sensual were they? Were they on the mechanical side? Was there emotional pull tied in? Were the details explicit or flowery? These are subjective but generally (1) too short to get a good judgement (2) not all what I'm looking for - very vague or flowery prose (3) either not explicit enough or not enough emotional pull (too mechanical/physically descriptive without the emotions) (4) what I love in a scene (5) absolute perfection - perfect balance of emotional longing and explicit descriptions Sex Scene Length: How long the bedroom scenes are (generally (1) is 1-3 sentences (2) is a few paragraphs to a page-ish (3) is about average, a few pages (4) more well developed scenes, quite a few pages with descriptions (4) the majority of the book takes place in the bedroom. This is always hard to tell for me on audio! Steam Scale: Generally, each flame is a scene. If scenes are super close together I sometimes combine them. If a scene is super short or so vague I don’t know what’s happening, I don’t count it. There’s some levels of grey but generally the number of flames is how many sex scenes there are (I max out at 5 so I’ll put a + after if there’s more than that)
This was a very cute and funny novella. This was the perfect read for when you want to take an hour or so to read - maybe in a long bath? It would be fitting as the heroine is a soap maker. I liked seeing a FMC in this role as it’s one I have not read about. Chloe is determined to make her soap business a success on her own and not be dependent on someone else. She needs to care for her aging parents (I love that!) Our MMC, Barnaby, literally stumbles into Chloe’s life one day and he is done for. He can’t seem to get his words and limbs in order when he’s around her as he becomes a bit of a bumbling mess. Good thing Chloe has good soap! I’m not one for the instalove trope, but the humor and sweetness of the story had me hooked.
"The Scoundrel and the Scientist" by Eliana Piers, book two of the Ashbourne Legacy series . Cover: 4/5 Story: 4/5 Steam (novella) : 🔥 🔥 Ending: HEA . Series or Stand Alone: You could read this as a stand alone, but I enjoy Piers's writing the most when read in series order as there can be cross over. . England, Regency (1816) Kind Hearted Man Half-Irish Soap Scientist Love at First Sight Insta-Lust He Falls First Carriage Romp Sneezy, Clumsy Hero Seven Dwarves Inspired Class Difference Hilarious Meet Cute Comedic Historical Romance . Just as book one in this series, "Scoundrel" is a rather comedic historical romance. With a shorter page count, even for a novella, it makes for quick, easy, and enjoyable reading without any major, tedious subplots to work through. This is, largely, all about the romance, but there is a sweet subplot the MFC is working towards. There is minimal CW for this title and nothing that I found would be, likely, major issues for most readers looking for a sweet and steamy read.
If you are a fan: of sweet and spicy historical romances, love at first sight, he falls first, working heroines, fairytales reimagined, and carriage romps, this just might be the title for you. I especially liked our MMC, Barnaby. He is not REALLY a Scoundrel but rather a man who has found himself totally and utterly besotted by a brilliant soap-making scientist.
As for steam, Piers has managed to work two full steam scenes into a short, short novella. She utilizes a combination of explicit and alluded-to terms. Each scene is detailed and fairly lengthy. . Read as an ARC ebook provided by author. Honest review left voluntarily. . CW (may contain spoilers): . . . . . Parents with declining health conditions Immigration due to war in Ireland
4 1/2*Stars* The lady soap maker may be the answer to his allergies, as the second son stumbles and mumbles his way to win her heart. Very funny! I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book gifted by the author.
Miss Chloe Penbrook is determined to make her family’s soap business a success & hopes to win a competition. Lord Barnaby Ashbourne hadn’t meant to stumble into her store, knock over her soap, and fall on top of her soft and supple body. A quick delightful romance. Poor Barnaby did quite a bit of stumbling & bumbling! In fact he was a walking disaster. I thoroughly enjoyed this novella very much a case of instant attraction & falling hard & fast for each other. I would have liked it to have been longer but it left me with a smile on my face My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Chloe and Barnaby certainly did play around when it came to riding that stallion. Let me ask the author this, did the sette survive? The romance is a quick romance, as expected for a short novel. It’s the moments in between the book that I enjoyed. Take for instance Barnaby is a tall and massive man who just happens to be like a bull in a China store. The chemistry between Chloe and Barnaby is purely a physical attraction, but I enjoyed reading the story.
I really liked this book! It's a short & quick read. It's a great palate cleanser if you need a break from the darker books. This is Barnaby & Chloe's story & let's just say they met in an unusual way! It's a great book & highly recommend this book & author!
What a fantastic start to a new series! This was a fun novella about two people interested in intellectual pursuits who found one another after a literal run in. There was some humor and sweetness and steam. Thank you Eliana Piers for a hot under the desk scene. I enjoy those scenes so much, and they are rare.
Like all of Ms. Piers’ works, her characters realize they can be better together. The FMC is strong and intelligent and she doesn’t want marriage or a man to change her. It’s great to see that the MMC doesn’t antagonize or assume the FMC will be something she’s not. They quickly support and appreciate one another. It’s really beautiful and one reason I enjoy all the books so much from Ms. Piers.
Miss Chloe Penbrook took over her father’s soap making business due to his age. She wanted to make it on her own and not depend on anyone else. She was going to enter a business competition and if she won, she would be on Bond Street.
Barney Ashbourne is the 2nd son of a Duke. He was walking sneezing away and bumped into something and he ended up falling through an open door. He realized it was a soap store, but he wasn’t sneezing. He is by the counter and picks up a glass bottle with liquid in it and ends of dropping it. He notices her eyes and something about her. Barney ends up slipping on the soap and goes down again taking Chloe with him. He ends of kissing her and she enjoyed it and ended up pushing him away.
He set up Chloe to meet Bridget and they discussed her making a soap liquid dispenser for her. Barney shows up and she wasn’t happy. He takes Chloe home and he rushes into her shop, and she collided into him, and stuff got shattered. She tells him to go he can’t fix it.
Chloe goes to Bridget and Bridget introduce her betrothed to her the Duke. She figured they could discuss her soap. And the Ashbourne mine potash which you use in your soap. Barney shows up and the Duke calls him brother, and Chloe was in shock. Chloe and Barney work thru their misgivings and agree to marry.
This was received as and ARC and leaving a voluntarily honest review.
This is the second book in the ongoing Ashbourne series. The stories are about seven brothers and how they fall in love. This is a hilarious, funny story about love at first sight. Chloe Penbrook owns a soap shop and is trying to make a name for herself as a soap maker, which is hard enough in England in 1816 for a woman. Just when things were starting to go well a very large, sinfully handsome peer fell into her store, then stumbling around dropped soap on the floor. He was adorably holding his very large hand over his eyes like a kid! Lord Barnaby Ashbourne knew better to go walking in the garden during the spring with his allergies. If he had known ahead of time what the day would bring, he would have ran not walked to the gardens. After a series of mishaps, he meets the most amazing woman and knows he must have her as his. But how to win a stranger over after breaking items in her store, falling on her and then kissing her on the floor of all places! This is such a fun, fast story. Great for a quick read at lunch or on the go. You will laugh out loud and fall for both our couple. Grab a copy and get started. I wish more was said about why her soap did not make him sneeze. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.
This second book in the series involves Chloe Penbrook and Barnaby Ashbourne. She is a scientist making soap for her store and trying to establish her future. Barnaby accidentally stumbles into her store, knocks her over and falls on top of her and kisses her the fun begins.
She is an independent woman, who wants to make it on her own. Barnaby sets up an opportunity for her and when she finds out she is angry. However, they talk things through and true love prevails.
Another cute, quick read, in the Ashbourne legacy, we had humor, angst and some bumps along the way before they find their HEA. Looking forward to the next story in the series.I received an ARC copy of the book from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily, all thought and opinions are my own.
Chloe is an independent soap maker just trying to make a go of business until Lord Barnaby stumbles into her shop, quite literally. When these two collide he is lost and contrives to spend more time in her company. I love the lengths he goes to to support her in her business and I enjoyed their journey to love. Again though, the audio didn’t hit right for me personally so I will reread and adjust, as I really want to get the whole feel of the story.
This short story is about two wonderful characters who are full of life and long for their dreams. Chloe and Barnaby are endearing individually, and together, they are amazing. The romance has an original and charming plot. We quickly fall into this romantic relationship and become swept away for a short time.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Second in the series are Barnaby and Chloe. This story didn’t have quite the oomph as the first story. It was however, cute and fast paced. Barnaby’s bumbling around and then hiding his eyes was adorable. One missed mark after all the ACHooing was that no one but Barnaby knew the soap Chloe made didn’t make him sneeze. Well written with great characters.
This is the second novella in the Ashbourne Legacy series with seven brothers. This book we get to meet the second oldest brother Barnaby who stumbles into Chloe's shop and life. The characters are great and so much fun!! I found it very enjoyable to read and I am looking forward to the next book!!
A sweet, enchanting story with a hint of spice. I fell for the bumbling scoundrel, Barnaby who's not so much a scoundrel and the aspiring soap maker/scientist Chloe. They have a wonderful connection with great witty banter that leaves you wanting more. An easy to read romance and easy to fall in love with Barnaby and Chloe.
I liked the connection between the stories, because it makes me feel like I know the characters. Bridget and Chloe seem like kindred spirits. Chloe is so fiercely independent that she tries to push Barnaby away! Will Chloe come to her senses and give into love, or will she remain alone and independent???
Wonderful story of Miss Chloe Penbrook, owner of a soap shop and Lord Barnaby Ashbourne who makes a mess of Chloe's soap. Loved these characters, and as always, enjoyed the writing style of this author. Part of the Ashbourne legacy series but can be read as a standalone. Quick read but full story.
Bubbly & playful Regency romance! Fast, funny and a bit clumsy - that’s Chloe & Barnaby for you! She’s a soap maker and he’s a second son, and together they slide into their happily ever after 🫧🩵🧼🫧
Chapter 2 in The Ashbourne Legacy is a sweet and spicy treat! Bring it on novella #3!
This was another quick read. It was cute and lighthearted. An all-around feel-good story. Characters from the first novella are revisited. I received a free ARC from the author and this is my honest review.
This is a lovely little "love at first sight" on his part novelette. There's some spice. My only real problem with this book is you don't get much time with the characters and just as you get invested it's over. It's a fun read and worth the time.
This novella is just a quick peek into Chloe and Burnaby’s initial encounters. With only the briefest background info about each on them, I did feel a bit cheated with the brevity of the story and really how little we learned about this pair. Still, it seems things happen/spill/break for a reason orchestrated by fate. Fast, steamy insta love with a quick HEA made this an enjoyable novella.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily sharing my honest review.
This second book into the Ashbourne series is a good read that tells of how Barnaby and Chloe meet through some interesting and humorous encounters. It contains delightful characters and is also filled with much romance and steam, which leads to a happy ending. I highly recommend reading!
Entertaining story and great for a quick read! Gotta love a good carriage scene, too!
In The Scoundrel and the Scientist, Eliana Piers invites readers into a world of intrigue, passion, and unexpected connections. Miss Chloe Penbrook, the brilliant scientist, finds herself in an accidental embrace with Lord Barnaby Ashbourne—a bumbling scoundrel with a penchant for kisses.
Their chemistry is electric, their banter delightful. Chloe, determined to make a new home for her family, discovers that love and life plans can indeed go hand in hand. Barnaby, despite his rogueish ways, becomes an unexpected ally in her quest.
Eliana’s prose sparkles, capturing the Regency era’s charm. The novelette balances sweet and spicy moments, leaving readers enchanted. If you enjoy witty banter, lovable characters, and a touch of magic, this is a delightful read.
A Scoundrel and the Scientist is a gem—a reminder that love can blossom unexpectedly.
