Percy Jackson and the Olympians #7

Wrath of the Triple Goddess

Rate this book
In his continuing quest to earn college recommendation letters from the gods, Percy has to pet sit the goddess Hecate's polecat and giant mastiff during Halloween week. What could go wrong?

Percy Jackson, now a high school senior, needs three recommendation letters from the Greek gods in order to get into New Rome University. He earned his first one by retrieving Ganymede’s chalice. Now the goddess Hecate has offered Percy another “opportunity”—all he has to do is pet sit her mastiff, Hecuba, and her polecat, Gale, over Halloween week while she is away. Piece of cake, right?

Percy, Annabeth, and Grover settle into Hecate’s seemingly endless mansion and start getting acquainted with the fussy, terrifying animals. The trio has been warned not to touch anything, but while Percy and Annabeth are out at school, Grover can’t resist drinking a strawberry-flavored potion in the laboratory. It turns him into a giant frenzied goat, and after he rampages through the house, damaging everything in sight, and passes out, Hecuba and Gale escape. Now the friends have to find Hecate’s pets and somehow restore the house, all before Hecate gets back on Saturday. It’s going to take luck, demigod wiles, and some old and new friends to hunt down the animals and set things right again.

Rick Riordan’s newest Percy Jackson adventure is full of hilarious set pieces, a diverse cast of gods and monsters, and many other delightful tricks and treats.

Rick writing books non-stop so Percy Jackson never ends 🤝🏻 Me avoiding reading the books so I never reach the end of the Riordanverse.

I actually respected Rick riordan when he said he wouldn’t write any more books in the PJ universe. Now he’s milking the series and ruining it.

this trio is just so special to me ♡

"Every time I lose someone" I said, "I get so angry…
I want revenge. But then I remember what my friends would want. The same thing my mom wants for me—to be happy. To find people who matter and hang on to them for as long as I can."

Hecate looked pained. "I cannot protect you from the way they see you. I cannot protect you from your own talent. They fear you. They will never allow you to rise."
"The gods or men?" Gale snarled.
Hecate didn't reply. She didn't need to. Gale knew the answer was both.

does this book have editing errors? yes. if this series didn’t already have a death grip on my heart and hold so much nostalgia, would i have given it 5 stars? idk and idc. i love this series sm.

“If all is in order, you will have your recommendation letter, Percy Jackson. If all is not in order…”

“I won’t need the recommendation letter,” I guessed. “Because I won’t have a future.”

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ I love how they have added an addendum to it's already existing title - The Senior Year Adventures; as if it wasn't already long enough? 😄 Percy's senior year certainly has been illuminating & quite exciting. Leave it to Percy and Co. to turn a simple task of babysitting a polecat and an hellhound for a week to turn into a monumental task that the Wrath of the Triple Goddess for failing their duty is the least of their problems! 😟

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ And that is probably where my own problems actually began. 🥺 That the whole premise of the conflict, itself, arose from their own misfortunes. 'The problem was, in Percy World, things never got easier, only weirder.' Granted, it is not the first time that self-inflicting problems occur, but it just didn't quite ring with me as it would have if the obstacles arose on their paths not of their own volition.

If that makes sense. 🙆🏻‍♀️

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Still, despite my disgruntlement of that certain factor, Rick Riordan still made it a very humane and empathetic story that showed the strength of character Percy possessed. It's not so much his righteousness that shines, it's empathy that connects him to others. 'I always try to be careful,” I promised. “Emphasis on try.' 🥲 Be it mortal or beast, the living or the dead, he seems to feel for them deeply; perhaps, it is the demi-god in him, or the one person who denied immortality that draws him towards those who have lost their mortality - and makes him want to help them in any way that he can. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

Crossroads were Hecate’s thing. Whether I liked it or not, I was standing at one now. Everything was going to change one way or another.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ I liked that there still was ample of comedic timing on the zany adventures of Percy, Grover and Annabeth. Some were delightful, some were painful, but one thing that never failed to deliver is just how much they know each other inside out and are never hesitant in taking that extra leap of courage in coming to each other's aids - '...I do know that nothing on earth is worth losing my best friend.' 🫂 There were some nice reveals to their abilities, as well as some heartwarming moments that may have tested their friendship, but only certified how very much 'we're all in this together' they were. The ending, though, did feel like a bit of a stretch. I understand the significance of it - memories, regrets…the choices we’ve made, or failed to make' can never be overcome if not attacked head on, but I was feeling kinda bored with the whole hooplah of the action. Not bored, but just hoping that the action could kinda speed up or be written in a more agreeable fashion. 😕

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Hecate, 'Goddess of magic, crossroads, necromancy', was something - that's for sure. 😅 And she certainly lived up to her name - giving Percy a taste of all that she had divine power over. And yet, there is an emotional human past story to the history of the dynamic Riordan crafted for her and her pets that really moved me in how it was portrayed. I did not expect it to have so much history and heart to it, that made her seem less crazed as the impression she gives everyone. Gale and Hecuba really grew on me and their own personal grievances were important and heartfelt; I liked that it wasn't all for naught their antics, but with reason, which Percy was willing to help them with. Even her haunted house - well, technically it's not haunted - but the trouble it gave Percy and Annabeth... Yeah, they'll definitely be haunted by that memory for awhile. 😥

Hey, Wise Girl,” I said, trying to keep the panic out of my voice, “be wise. I don’t know much, but I do know we’re stronger together. Always.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Speaking of those two, I'm glad the author continues to keep Percy's aim for New Rome and his desire to build a future with Annabeth a prevalent part of his train of thoughts & future goals. Even though there's still a slight hint of a doubt that he still is unworthy of someone as awesome as her. 'We were a pair, and when we stood at the crossroads, we did it together.' 🥹 There's so much trust and love between the two - which is kind of odd that they haven't argued in awhile - but, it's really just adorable how sweet and smitten Percy is still very much on her, and how much he treasures and values the bonds he's made with those he holds close. 🤍🤍

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ It was nice to see some familiar faces again. Sally and Percy really share such a deep bond that it was nice to have her play a slightly more prominent role here There were also some new characters introduced that warmed their way into everyone's hearts. Nope! That's not up for debate. 😊

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ So, not the best of them, but it was still a solid continuation of Percy's trials. I know there were a fair number of zingers and quips that may have felt too much at times or the inundation of pop references may have taken one out of the reading experience, but I was kinda enjoying traveling around New York, that I just rolled with it. Definitely curious to see who will employ Percy for his final recommendation and whether or not he'll pass with flying colors.... or not. 🌟

it was really fun jumping back into the pjo universe, especially with a halloween-themed story. even though it hasn’t been long since i last read percy, annabeth, and grover’s adventures, this one felt like a refreshing change of pace. the halloween setting gave it a spooky vibe that made it stand out, and having them pet-sitting for hecate? definitely chaotic, but totally fitting for this world.

this story had a different feel compared to percy’s usual world-saving quests, but that made it more fun. instead of those super high-stakes, apocalyptic situations, we get a lighter, chaotic adventure filled with magical mishaps. the humor and twists were still there, and even though the danger wasn’t as intense, there were plenty of challenges to keep things interesting. it struck that perfect balance of fun, action, and those classic percy jackson moments.

seeing percy, annabeth, and grover together again was a highlight, as always. their dynamic never gets old, and a few familiar faces popping up added to the fun. overall, it was a great addition to the series, and i’m looking forward to seeing what’s next.

i wanted to love this. truly, i did. but there is just so much wrong with this book.

the third chapter mentions paul and hana whispering, what happened to dave? why are we suddenly talking about paul? where did paul come from?

percy talks about leo in the present tense, though to everyone’s knowledge, including percy’s, leo is dead.

“the ocean glinted in the moonlight (…) we were in turkey.” turkey does not border any oceans! a simple google search would have shown/said as much.

when did annabeth’s usual shampoo become apple scented? we clearly read “annabeth's hair smelled like lemon soap” in battle of the labyrinth.

did anyone proofread this book? was there an editor?

i felt like the book was trying too hard to be funny. the constant mention of pee? terrible.

i know these books are written for kids, but compared to the first five books it felt even more childish. i enjoyed chalice of the gods, it was a cute book. but i just couldn’t bring myself to like this one.

moving on to the characters, the characterization was terrible. the characters felt like parodies. why was percy written in a way that makes him seem like an incompetent idiot, incapable of doing anything without annabeth’s help? percy is a smart dude and i hated reading his thoughts about himself. feeling self conscious is obviously a very normal thing, but why wasn’t it discussed? why joke about his feelings instead of acknowledging how he’s feeling and having him talk about it to his girlfriend?

back to annabeth’s help. it seemed like annabeth was reduced to the mom friend who knows everything. why? she’s seventeen! let her make mistakes! where percy was made out to be incompetent, annabeth was written to be over-competent.

i have more to say but i’ll leave it at this for now. i might come back to edit this cause i’ve just been rambling here, but i needed to get it out.
