☆☆☆☆.5

Masters of Blood is a Hades and Persephone retelling with vampires and humans. The story follows Orion, a vampire king from the kingdom of Obridora and human Princess Levana. At a meeting of rulers, Levana is brought out in public for the first time in her entire life where Orion lays eyes on her. Orion is immediately drawn to her while she doesn’t give him the time of day due to vampires reputations in the human realms. When Orion finds out she is betrothed to the only other human ruler in their realm, he knows he has to step in, in order to get what he desires the most even if that means kidnapping her and potentially starting a war.

This book had me hooked from the start and I did not want to put it down. The pacing of the book was great and felt like a natural progression for a stand alone fantasy novel. It felt like it was the perfect balance between spice and plot. The writing of the spice was honestly great in my opinion, and I absolutely loved the incorporation of the shadows into those scenes as well. 😩

Levana, the FMC had great character development throughout the story. At the beginning, Levana was a quiet, sheltered, immature girl that was the doormat of her family. As the story progressed, she became more sure of herself. I LOVED Orions character, his wit and his dirty mouth but felt like his character lacked the depth that Levana had. Yes, we learned more about him towards the end but I just wanted more.

I only marked it down .5 star because of the few spelling and grammar mistakes there were.

I will 100% be buying this book hard copy to add it to my collection, and keeping my eye on NetGalley for the arc of the next book in the series. 👀

2.5 / 5.0 Master of Blood by Karolina Wilde is a Hades and Persephone retelling set with vampires in the far north of GOT, but with zippers, and reclaimed hardwood furniture… (which would have happened probably but you’d never say it). This was just hard to read. The premise of the story and the tropes were well chosen, and even the plot is not poorly done, but the editing… woof. And the FMC is insufferable but not in an intentional way, she just sucks.

Overall, it wasn’t for me. I wanted to read something seductive and spooky but instead got pedantic and poorly written.

Until Next Time,
MC

I received the book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for the book!

This was a cute standalone fantasy book. I had picked it up for the plot, we love a steamy vampire fantasy book, with a shadow daddy to come and pick us up!

The story was predictable. The plot was very simple, and sadly, the ending was not what I would have wanted it to be. I feel like the ending was very fast in comparison to the whole development of the relationship between both main characters.

The language was very pretty, but must I say at some parts repetitive. The characters were different from each other and also well built. Even though the FMC could have been smarter at the very beginning. At some spots, she was just embarrassing herself, and she thought it was bravery. It's also a cliché trope, that the FMC never rebels her whole life and then out of the hat starts to have an attitude. The transition was missing. Nevertheless, I liked her characters and her brave and curious spirit.

The world building was also suprlerficial, only mended together to give sense to the reader where the FMC was taken and what the few other different kingdoms were. That could have been more accurate and deep, but in comparison to the book's length, it was sufficient. Otherwise, it would have taken way more space than the story itself.

Overall, I enjoyed it very much. There was a lot of description of food and nature, things I love very much. That also made it different from other fantasy books that only have war, injustice, and cruelty as the main topics. This was a light fantasy.

4.5 stars: Exactly what I want in a standalone romantasy. Not intense world building and fast paced. Plus I love hades x Persephone retellings!

𓍢 ִ ໋ “everything about you pleases me. your sole existence in this world, next to me, is a sweetest pleasure.”

OMG, this book had me feeling all the feels! i swear, i have this thing where every ARC i request turns out to be like a 2-star read (but i keep doing it, LOL). so, when i got accepted for this, i didn't expect much, but holy moly, was i blown away! this book had it all— the setting, the plot, and OMG, the way their love bloomed, it just melted my heart! and don't even get me started on the characters, especially my girl anika! i'm legit attached to this world now, it's insane! this book took me on an emotional rollercoaster—i went from being mad to feeling all the sympathy, then i was laughing my head off, then crying, then swooning, and now i'm just a puddle of emotions. the romance was everything, and the spice, oh boy, it was perfect! i can't even put into words how much i loved it, but seriously, mark your calendars for may 7th, 2024 , 'cause you gotta read this one! you're seriously missing out if you don't!

i. tropes.
⤷ hades x persephone retelling
⤷ arranged marriage
⤷ vampire king x stolen princess
⤷ forced proximity
⤷ political court intrigue
⤷ dark high-fantasy setting
— genre’s: adult, fantasy, romance

ii. plot summary.

princess levana rhazien, heir to eziron's throne, never questioned her future. locked in her father's palace, she tended her gardens, awaiting her fate as queen. but when her father arranges a marriage to another king, she must comply. yet, her plans unravel when a powerful vampire king kidnaps her during her engagement party. now, alone in the wintry north, she must navigate a world of bloodthirsty vampires and a determined vampire king, orion lothaire, who wants her as his bride, no matter the cost. survival becomes her only goal.

iii. the writing.

so, this is my first dive into this author's world, and let me tell you, i'm already hooked. there's just something about karolina wilde's writing that clicked with me. it's like a breeze, you know? the dialogue is top-notch, filled with banter that's just chef's kiss, and don't even get me started on the swoon-worthy lines orion drops on levana. seriously, i was highlighting like crazy because every line was gold. and speaking of pacing, it was spot on. not too slow, not too fast, just right. and let's talk spice. normally, i steer clear of it because it can get so cringy, but here, it felt natural and genuine. sure, there were some grammar and spelling hiccups, but hey, it's an arc. overall, loved the writing, can't wait to dive into more of wilde's stuff.

𓍢 ִ ໋ “she is worth starting a war for.”

iv. main characters.

꒰⋆𐙚 ⌗ levana rhazien.
sunshine

orion’s got this nickname for her, “sunshine,” and let me tell you, it fits perfectly. levana's like a ray of sunshine, stuck in a castle with her less-than-stellar parents, surrounded by her plants and furry pals, and most importantly, her ride-or-die bestie, anika. then along comes orion, shaking things up in her world. levana's character growth? insane. she goes from this delicate princess everyone walks all over to this fierce queen who's like, “i’m done with pleasing everyone.” it’s a vibe. sure, she can be stubborn, and okay, maybe a tad idiotic (who shows up to a royal meeting NAKED just to get a rise out of orion?), but man, i love her. she's sweet, deserving of all the happiness, and just lights up any room she walks into. protect her at all costs, 'cause she's a gem 🥹

𓍢 ִ ໋ “before i met you, i was floating in the darkness of the night, in the middle of the dark waters, with no end in sight. i allowed the current to take me wherever, completely surrendering to fate. but then the moon appeared, shining bright in the darkness of the night, and lit up the path to the shore for me. finally, i was able to find my way through those dark waters home. you are my moon. i wanted you to know it”

𓍢 ִ ໋ “i was the luckiest girl in the world.”

𓍢 ִ ໋ “this man had walked into my life and turned it upside down. he had stolen me away from my home, and yet… right then, in that moment, he felt like home.”

꒰⋆𐙚 ⌗ orion lothaire.
sexy vampire ruler

alright, brace yourselves 'cause i gotta let it out: HE’S SO FREAKIN’ HOT! whew, feels good to say that 😂. seriously though, what's up with authors making the “bad guy” so irresistibly attractive? orion's the whole package—sexy, sweet, a little rough around the edges but gentle when it counts. he's got sass, he's hilarious, powerful, protective, and let me tell you, he'd go to extreme lengths to protect HIS levana, HIS sunshine, HIS queen 😫. can we just take a moment to appreciate him? this man could ask me to do anything, and i'd be like, “sure thing, no questions asked.” okay, okay, i need to chill, but can you really blame me? i'm head over heels for this guy. he treats levana like a queen, showers her with the most swoon-worthy gestures. i mean, he literally built her a greenhouse because he knows how much she loves plants and has always dreamed of having one! like, come on, that's perfection right there. i need more orion in my life, like, now. he's officially on my never-ending list of book boyfriends.

𓍢 ִ ໋ “my love, they will not take you away from me. you and i, we are meant to be together, and i will cross foreign seas and travel until the end of the world to ensure we stay together. if i have to, i will burn everything in my way to you. set the whole world on fire and watch it burn until there is nothing left but me and you. i will fight for you until the very last breath.”

𓍢 ִ ໋ “my love. my sun. my levana.”

𓍢 ִ ໋ “you, my love, are that sunshine that made my already good life wholesome and full. and i do not care to experience life without you.”

꒰⋆𐙚 ⌗ levana and orion.

DESTINED, CONNECTED, MADE FOR EACH OTHER! 🥀 these two are everything, i swear. their love is like a lifeline when everything feels like it’s falling apart. it’s just… breathtaking. their playful banter, the way their love blossomed from the very start to where they are now—it’s been a journey, a rollercoaster, but they made it. from enemies to this unbreakable bond they share, it’s nothing short of beautiful. they’re like the perfect match, the beauty and the beast, all rolled into one. the way orion loves levana, the way levana understands orion—it’s pure magic. honestly, to be loved like that, to be understood like that, it’s the most precious thing in the world.

𓍢 ִ ໋ “you will be mine forever.”
“and you will be mine forever.”

v. side characters.

꒰⋆𐙚 ⌗ anika.
levana’s best friend

SHE’S MY FAVE! seriously, the moment she popped up, i was hooked. she’s just… chef’s kiss… amazing. an absolute sunshine beam, i swear. and her sense of humor? i was dying, like, legit laughing out loud. she’s flawless, truly 😫. anika’s just this super sweet, positive force, always playful, sometimes a little mischievous, but in the best way possible. i mean, come on, who wouldn’t be wrapped around her finger? antonio, lestat, saxon—everyone’s under her spell, and honestly, i get it. she’s got this vibe, this energy, that just draws you in, makes you wanna soak up all her awesomeness. she’s like the ultimate loving goofball, you know? and guess what? i peeked ahead, and the second book in the series is all about her! LIKE, YES PLEASE, I’M ALREADY PRE-ORDERING! more anika? SIGN ME UP! i’m legit crushing on her, and oh, i’m hoping she ends up with both lestat and saxon, like, CAN YOU IMAGINE? it’s gonna be epic. i’m counting down the days till august when her book drops.

𓍢 ִ ໋ “anika had not only one but two vampire admirers wrapped around her little finger.”

𓍢 ִ ໋ “i love you, and i support you, and i would do many things for you. sadly, rolling in the dirt in the middle of the woods at night is not one of those things. even if sexy, powerful vampires are involved.”

꒰⋆𐙚 lestat.

MY GOOFBALL! this guy is hilarious, seriously. i adore him to bits. i bet he's just a blast to hang out with, and talk about charming—his flirty game is ON POINT 😍, and i'm here for it. he's like the lovable idiot of the group, you know? but deep down, he's got layers, man. when he wants to, he can be so much more, and it's just... chef's kiss. i genuinely, truly love lestat. he's got this heart of gold, and the way he immediately welcomed anika and levana into the “family”... MY HEART! he's just the sweetest.

𓍢 ִ ໋ “anytime, my lady,” lestat said, setting her down. “just say a word, and i am yours.”

꒰⋆𐙚 ⌗ saxon.

he's like this mysterious, dark fluffball wrapped in danger. but let me tell you, underneath that brooding vampire exterior, he's just a big ol' sweetheart and a total gentleman 🤭. i'm absolutely smitten with him. he's got this kindness about him that just melts your heart, and his sense of humor? to die for. i adore his bromance with orion and lestat—they're like the three musketeers, but fangier 😂. it's super cute. every time he popped up, he stole the show. such a sweetie. here's hoping he gets a bigger role in the next book because i'm dying to see more of him. he's just too precious.

𓍢 ִ ໋ “let me tell you, brother, your wife might be the bravest person i know.”
“you do not have to tell me that,”

vi. in conclusion.

CAN YOU TELL I'M OBSESSED WITH THIS BOOK? it's like everything i've been craving after crawling out of my reading slump. it even reignited my love for writing reviews—i was starting to lose interest, but this book got me back in the game. i'm seriously attached to these characters. august can't come soon enough for the second book—i'm already counting down the days. this book deserves all the hype and more once it officially drops on may 7th, 2024. seriously, everyone needs to read it ASAP. major love for the author and everything about this book. i just can't get enough of it.

Thank you so so much to the amazing author for sharing an ARC of this book with me!!!

“Now that I have seen her in person, I wanted Levana for myself.”

“Am I in danger?
The thought… thrilled me just as much as it scared me. I was not familiar with such wild, extreme emotion roaming within me. ”

“Go to hell.”
King Orion smirked. “Only if you go with me.”

This book was so good!!!! I loved it. I loved it. I loved it so much. I can’t shut up about it. It is so perfectly dark and wonderful and exactly what I wanted!!! In this Hades and Persephone retelling but in vampire version, Levana is stolen away by the vampire King Orion. And this is only the start of the long journey of their romance and their life !!! This book had so many amazing tropes: forced marriage, forced proximity, enemies to lovers, obsessive vampire senses, my wife and my Queen trope … I feel into its dark depths like never before !!! And from the very first pages!!! I read it is one standing !!!! It is absolutely insane !!! I loved how the author built up the action and the world and its political dynamics. I loved Levana because she is such a badass main character. I’m not even going to start on how much I loved Orion because … that would require a long time and a full page essay!! And I loved Somme side characters so much!!! Anika, Lestat and Saxon made my jaw drop and my smile widen when I was not expecting it!!! And a part of me (a big one at that) desperately hopes for a book made of them and their journey!!! The romance was incredible and the spicy scenes … WOW !!! Loved every single one of them!!! I’m so so glad I had a chance to read this book!!!! I loved it, loved it, loved it!!!

“You are the most exquisite sight in the world. The tallest mountains with snowy peaks, the darkest ocean with foaming waves crashing into golden sand beach, the crystal clear water lake that reflects the moon and the stars in the sky above it cannot compete with you. If I only had to look at you, and nothing more, for the rest of the life, I would be the happiest vampire alive.”

“Nobody threatens my queen and lives.”

- Thank you Netgalley, the publisher and the author for providing this arc! -

3.5 ⭐️

I cannot wait for the next book. And I will, for sure, read another book by Karolina Wilde.

(+)
- Short chapters and liked the writing;
- The retailing of Hades and Persephjon was very cool. I have not read any other before, so take that as you will.
- Orian's friends. I cannot wait for the other books;
- Anika and Levana's relationship. They are the true love story.
- Orian and Levana

(-)
- This book did not feel like it ended. I was so confused when I realized that this was an interconnected standalone. It did not make sense and that is the main reason I did not rate it higher;
- Everything was kinda rushed at the end of it.

A romantic twist on a vampire x human couple with enemies to lovers vibes and a intriguing fantasy world.

Main tropes/themes

He falls first

"Soft" enemies to lovers (she hates him, he's besotted)

Slow burn

Magical creatures - vampires, fae, homebrew

Poetic romance and smut romance

I enjoyed reading masters of blood, and it didn't take me long to get engulfed into the fantasy world that Karolina has developed. You aren't overwhelmed with information, and the magical creatures are quirky.

I enjoyed that the main character Levanna, had a slow-burn development of love for the vampire Orion, as too often in romance fantasies - the characters instantly fall in love with no reason or development. She reads as a young inexperienced woman (she has been locked away by her parents and raised to be a princess so this fits in with the narrative!), but Orion, who is far from inexperienced, treats her respectfully and it was nice to see their relationship develop slowly. I appreciated that her backstory flaws, meant she was apprehensive about love in general.

I must admit, I was more obsessed with a side character (her best friend), and her two (!) love interests, but that is probably because I'm more used to feisty female main characters that take the directive rather than be directed. However, I hear that there is another book in the making featuring them, so I'm looking forward to that!

The romance is well balanced between smut scenes (I enjoyed the use of shadows... you'll have to read it to find out what I mean!), and flowerly romance. I wasn't so keen on the flowery speech, but I imagine that's atypical of a vampire that's been alive for 400 plus years and he just needs to work on his game. I know for some, that kind of poetic romance will be a bonus to their read!

The pacing is quick, and the storyline flows in a logical manner. There was a slight twist at the end (I say slight as I saw it coming, but it was nicely built up to).

One flaw is that there are quite a few typos, but they are easily overlooked and didn't really deter me from the story flow. I didn't realise it was a HadesxPersephone retelling as I was reading; the only similarity that stands out is that Orion kidnaps Levanna. But, as I wasn't expecting it to be a retelling, it didn't sway from my enjoyment.

All in all, I'd rate it 3.5 stars, but I can easily see how this would be a 5 star read for some.

me if i was kidnapped by orion: “let me go— oh 😶 why he kinda…” full review below!

Vampires will never go out of style. I was expecting only to have fun going into this book, and fun I did have! Masters of Blood immerses you in its steamy, gothic fantasy and makes it difficult to stop reading.

Granted, I would have loved for the connection between our love interests to have stronger foundations on something other than their fate, but I enjoyed the romance nonetheless.

Perfect for lovers of dark romance!

I could drown in this book and die happy.
A delicious standalone that had me on my KNEES, and BEGGING for more!

Honestly, at the start I didn't know this was a standalone, and that alone makes it even better! It's definitely my number one standalone read of 2024, I don't think I will find another to top this.

I DEVOURED this book and can't wait for the next standalone in this series!

The chemistry and banter between Orion and Levana was absolutely perfect, and HELLO Lestat, Saxon and Anika!! Chef's f*cking kiss!!
I haven't read a book yet, that has given me side characters that I ALMOST loved more than the MMC and FMC, seriously!

Now, I'm not a huge fan of vampire books, but I've been dabbling in them lately and I'm beyond glad that I gave this book a chance and entered the world of Eziron. I wish I could stay forever!

This story has everything I love in a book, a strong and badass FMC, possessive shadow daddy MMC, fantastic banter, noteworthy side characters and a story that will live rent free in the back of my mind forever.
I don't think King Orion will be moving out, ever.

My soul is ready for book two!

I want to keep this review spoiler free, but if you’re looking for an easier fantasy but still filled with spice, fated mates, political intrigue, action, and friendships pick this one up!! 🙌🏻 A rough and reluctant start Princess Levana marries vampire King Orion 🔥 she was previously arranged to marry another king and Orion claims he’s saving her and keeps her in his kingdom. Levana is locked away in a foreign kingdom surrounded by vampires with her new husband who swears he will protect her with his life if need be! This book kept me flipping the pages to find out what’s next. Orion was such a protective but sweet MMC, and I absolutely loved the friendship between Anika and Levana. Thank you to the author and net galley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review 🫶🏻

3.2 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We begin with a prologue with King Orions pov and it is here we see him meet Princess Levana for the first time. For some reason she is the most beautiful person he’s EVER seen and he’s instantly in love and willing to break peace treaties over him even though the extent of their conversation is him saying hi and her saying “no thank you”…. Then we’re put into the mind of Princess Levana. We learn that her father is absent, her mother is abusive and her bestfriend is oblivious. I just feel like you should be able to pick up on even the slightest sign of abuse when you literally live with your bestfriends family. Anyway Levana is to be wed to a loser king from a poor land that she has no interest in but she’s the dutiful daughter so ofcourse she’s willing do go along with it. She talks about her blood boiling over it, she mentions not knowing how she will sleep with her husband because she’s not at all attracted to him but she’s willing to shut up and do what she’s told. During her engagement party she is kidnapped/recused by Orion and the first thing she does when she realizes is slap him and demand he take her back. Now don’t get me wrong I get it, he’s a stranger, a vampire, blah blah… but like home girl your life wasn’t that great to begin with and you like him so why the hardcore pushback. I’m not saying she should be fine with being kidnapped but I am saying she shouldn’t be demanding to be taken back to her sucky life so fast. 😂 Also give me a break, she’s meek, obedient, and cowers to everyone else in her life but I’m to believe she has all this bravado and defiance for this hulking, powerful vampire king whom she actually should be scared of? Then as she’s having the conversation with Anika where Anika tells her she’s allowed people to walk all over her her whole life and that maybe staying in the vampire kingdom might be better she just thinks, “Anika doesn’t know what it’s like to live with a mother who always finds reasons to punish me and a father who isn’t there” and it’s like ding-dong that’s exactly what she and all of us are saying…. Why are you so dead set on returning there?? Like I appreciate a stubborn MFC just as much as the next person but I feel she’s being stubborn just for the sake of being stubborn at this point and it’s holding the story back. I’m ready to move on Levana… if she was trying to escape to go off on her own I would 100% understand it but she’s claiming to want to leave because she doesn’t want to be in another “golden cage” but you’re running away right back one, one that was a whole heck of a lot harsher. Moving on we get to her failed escape attempt, who didn’t see that coming, and then the wedding date is moved up. Now I love a possessive MMC, but I don’t like that he straight up FORCED her to marry him. I can usually get with it if we have even a semblance of a real reason, like if it was for her protection or it was going to save someone else but he literally hardcore FORCED her during the ceremony just because she found her attractive. I will say all of this is only 30% into the book so it’s kinda dragging and I’m not enjoying Levanas character but whatevs. Next up on not really believable, we have previously meek and quiet Levana showing up to a council meeting to meet a bunch of vampires for the first time naked in hopes to “make Orion so annoyed he regrets marrying her” but like all I could do was roll my eyes.
Anywayssssss…….. this book has a TON of grammatical errors. Misused words, words using the wrong tense and so on. I would highly recommend having it edited again. I enjoyed the premise of the book, and it seemed like a good story that I would absolutely love if done just a tad better. Again, I did not like the MFC so that’s a bummer but what I did love was her bestfriend. Give me her book honestly! Lol. I would still recommend this if you can look past errors when reading.

Thank you to Karolina Wilde and NetGalley for giving me early access to this book in exchange for an honest review!

As someone who never quite got over her Twilight phase, I'm always on the lookout for great vampire fantasy romances. And I wanted so badly for this one to be one of them. Sadly, this wasn't the one.

The first 40-60% was ridiculously bad but fun, with nary a plot and just horrendous sex scenes in-between things happening. But then, the book is getting more serious and attempts to have a plot, which, unfortunately, makes it boring for me. The surface-level world building and how plot-convenient some things could be reminds me a lot of Lightlark.

Our FMC Levana supposedly loves plants and gardening and doesn't mind getting her hands dirty to take care of her plants. But we never once see her actually take care of her plants. This is a book written in first person POV. Give me PARAGRAPHS AFTER PARAGRAPHS of facts about plants, the things she would do alone in her greenhouse when no one's watching, or even the silly names she gives all her babies. Honestly. Am I to believe that this girl loves plants just because she says so? I wish the characterization were much deeper and more detailed.

Also, I guess I should mention that it bothers me how Levana simply didn't want to marry Nikolas because he was ugly. Because although she had reservations about marrying Orion, she pretty much accepted it immediately... because he's a hot vampire king. Choose your gilded cage, I guess, haha.

As for Orion, I know there's limits of what the book could show about him and his thoughts, since it's in Levana's POV pretty much the whole time. Still, I wish the book explains better why he's so obsessed with her and is immediately attracted to her. Up until 95% of the book, it's easy to believe that he was only physically attracted to her, which would make his love a shallow one, as she could grow old and die as a human. (Honestly though, I'd rather the book just use "mate" like everything else, instead of twin flames or something else that's barely explained.)

Now for the plot-convenient stuff and some of the world-building logic. Apparently the vampires could eat bloodied raw meat? That's all fine and dandy, but explain to me why Levana and Anika not gag at the sight and smell of it? How easily it is for them both to adapt to being awake at night and sleeping during the day? Also, I could understand the castle and a few places around the kingdom having human food stocked for Levana at Orion's orders, but in town? Even at the other vampire kingdoms where there's barely any human, if any at all? Also don't get me started on how those places would smell. No human should be able to set foot in places where vampires mainly settle in.

I expected to give this at least 3.5 or even 4 stars going in. This is honestly heartbreaking.

🌟🌟🌟⭐️ 🌶️Karolina Wilde’s Masters of Blood is a captivating journey into a world where power, betrayal, and dark magic intertwine. The story follows our protagonist, Alina, a young sorceress with a hidden past, as she navigates the treacherous political landscape of the blood mages' society.
From the very first page, Wilde draws readers into a richly detailed world, where magic is both a blessing and a curse. The intricate lore and the rules governing blood magic are meticulously crafted, offering a fresh and engaging twist on the fantasy genre. The author's attention to detail in world-building is commendable, making the setting both vivid and believable.
Alina is a complex and relatable character. Her journey from a naive sorceress to a formidable player in the blood mages' game is compelling and well-paced. Her internal struggles and moral dilemmas add depth to her character, making her more than just a typical fantasy heroine. The supporting characters, including the enigmatic and brooding Malachi, and the cunning and ruthless Seraphina, are equally well-developed, each bringing their own unique dynamics to the story.
One of the highlights of Masters of Blood is its plot. Wilde masterfully weaves together multiple storylines, keeping readers on the edge of their seats with unexpected twists and turns. The political intrigue and power struggles are reminiscent of Game of Thrones, but with a unique magical twist that sets it apart. The action scenes are thrilling and well-executed, balancing the more intense moments with quieter, character-driven scenes.
Wilde’s prose is both lyrical and engaging, painting vivid pictures without being overly descriptive. The dialogue is sharp and natural, revealing much about the characters and their relationships without resorting to exposition.
However, the novel is not without its flaws. Some readers might find the pacing a bit slow in the middle sections, where the focus shifts heavily to political maneuvering. Additionally, the romance subplot, while intriguing, occasionally feels underdeveloped compared to the main plot.
Overall, Masters of Blood is a fantastic addition to the fantasy genre. Karolina Wilde has crafted a dark, immersive world filled with magic, intrigue, and memorable characters. It's a must-read for fans of epic fantasy and dark magic tales. I rate this book 3.5 stars and 1 chili pepper emoji for its captivating storyline, well-developed characters, and the perfect blend of romance and action.
Whether you’re a longtime fantasy fan or new to the genre, Masters of Blood is a spellbinding read that promises to leave you eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series.

"Why was the idea of someone actually being in love with me so impossible to accept?"

"maybe if I beat him with the book he was reading, he'd take me seriously."

It was quite a nice book, I wouldn't call it an exact Hades & Persephone retelling, it didn't really have any Greek related elements, aside for the tasks Hades gave Persephone in the original Greek Lore. But it is still a VERY GOOD STORY!!! very nicely written, and very difficult to put down once you start it.

I loved reading how Levana goes from being a timid Princess, to being a Feisty Queen, I loved how Orion was possessive and caring without being overbearing. The Dom/Sub dynamic between the two of them was very nicely laid out, it was beautifully understood (and not as Overpowering on the Male Domination as in some books, it was simple, subtle, and enjoyable) I loved reading about Levana struggling to accept suddenly having real Love in her life, and that someone can actually genuinely love her for who she is, and not What she is. I connected with her character very deeply on that.

I was scared of a Cliche Plot twist at first, - the whole "there's a secret true heir to the throne", my first thought was "Let me guess, it's Levana, right? Big surprise" - but it was nice to find that it wasn't the case at the end of the book, and her ending in the book was very nice, I'm glad it was different that I expected, I am quite curious how she'll be in the next book, now with her "new" self and how her "gifts" will manifest.

I must say, I cheered and laughed out loud at what Levana did to King Nickolas, that was just such a Female Rage moment, and so nicely done. Anika, Isadora and Esmeralde added a nice supporting element of "strong woman", and it adding to Levana finding her feminine strength very beautifully.

The Bonus chapter from Orion's POV was very nice, I do hope it gets included in the Finished Publication of Masters of Blood.

The mixed elements of Vampires and Fae in the same book was new to me (it's usually one or the other in what I've read), having the two together in the story, played very nicely off of each other, I'm curious over who the Hidden True heirs are to the kingdoms, and the Century War between the Vampire and Fae.

All of the tropes of the book added into each other very nicely. I'd say the Rhysand Girls will hopefully enjoy Orion just as much, the Obsessed, utterly in love with his wife, touch her and die, fated mates, shadow magic, scary vampire is a guaranteed winner, mixed with the "She's MY WIFE!" and the "Good Girl/Sunshine" nicknames, was good!!

Leveana is a human Princess and only heir to a human King. She is kidnapped from her engagement party by the Vampire King Orion. She finds herself in his kingdom surrounded by vampires and at the mercy of the vampire king she knows nothing about. Orion is hellbent on making her his bride, and does very little explaining as to why and has a consequences be damned attitude about it.

Let me start off by saying I didn't read the description very well because I missed the whole Hades and Persephone retelling but I love retellings so when I clicked in my brain I was all for it. I actually really liked Leveana, I like how her character growth was almost immediate and it was pointed out more than once by her best friend. I adore Amika- shes a true girls girl. Orion, wow just wow. Honestly he gave me the vibes of Hades with the shadows but also very much Dracula. I loved the nods to vampiric compulsion, even as subtle as they were. I enjoyed his character a lot. But I do absolutely adore Hades so this did surprise me. I was surprised by the Lestat character and would've loved more on him. I enjoyed that Orion didn't immediately turn Leveana and the explanation was well done. The touch her and die trope was very obvious and just added to the attraction of Orion. But i loved even more so that he gave Leveana choice and power.

Okay enough about the characters and more on the rest. I enjoyed the story line and how a lot of it kept me guessing what was going to happen next. It picks up from page one and was paced really well. I did not feel bored at any point. The world building was interesting. Different realms within a larger Kingdom. Some areas were obviously more built than others. I enjoyed the magic especially the shadows. I loved the attachment to the animals and plants too, I don't know why or how that caught me off guard, but I LOVED it. I could definitely see inspiration coming from different sources, Hades and Persephone, Dracula, maybe a little Twilight (looking at you secluded island for 2). I did notice a few typos which were a little distracting usually I can look past them but more than once I had to reread to make sure i was getting the point.

Overall this was a 4/5 for me. I know this is a standalone and it was tied up really nicely but I think I need more!

My encounter with "Masters of Blood" by Karolina Wild was nothing short of extraordinary. This intriguing blend of a Hades and Persephone retelling with a vampire twist enthralled me from the first page to the last. Hades and Persephone is always a good retelling when done right and the author did just that, it was done right.

As Levana is whisked away by the enigmatic vampire King, Orion, I found myself immersed in a tale of romance and suspense that surpassed all expectations. Why do romance readers love our FMC being whisked away all the time, it always makes for such a good read.

The novel's incorporation of beloved tropes such as forced marriage, enemies to lovers, and royal intrigue added depth and excitement to the narrative. The character development of Levana, from a sheltered princess to a strong and resolute protagonist, was a highlight that resonated with me, I am always here for a growth and a strong FMC. Orion's magnetic and enigmatic presence further added layers to the story, making him a character I couldn't get enough of. (Morally Grey yes please)

The supporting cast, including Anika, Lestat, and Saxon, brought surprising elements to the plot, leaving me eagerly anticipating future stories centred around their journeys. The passionate romance between Levana and Orion was powerfully depicted, with spicy scenes that added intensity to their relationship I do wish there was more though, but this is coming from a heavy romance reader.

I found myself drawn into a world of dark allure and forbidden love. While I was captivated by the narrative and its enthralling twists, a few minor pacing issues prevented me from awarding it a perfect rating I do feel like the ending was a little quick. Hence, I grant "Masters of Blood" a solid 4-star review for its gripping narrative, compelling characters, and unforgettable romantic tale that left me yearning for more, it is a book I will recommend to friends and will be continuing myself.

A massive thank-you to NetGallery for allowing me to review this amazing book, I enjoyed it.

So this book as a whole caught me off guard. I wasn’t sure what all I was signing up for when I got to the page about trigger warnings. I was a little scared to proceed 😂

However, this book exceeded expectations and delivered a non-stop ride from start to finish. It was set in a beautiful fantasy realm where humans and vampires coexist as members of “The Coalition,” basically a peace treaty that ensures no war between the two species.
At a meeting of the rulers of the land, vampire King Orion sees human princess Levana and decides she is the one for him, even though she is betrothed to another. On the night of her engagement party, Orion whisks Levana away and takes her to his castle of night.
Furious, confused, and afraid, Levana plots her escape and spends her nights hating the King who kidnapped her.
However, as she finds it harder and harder to hate him, the world around them is thrown into chaos. War is imminent, alliances are formed, and the future is uncertain. Will King Orion and Levana see through their differences, or will their choices doom the world.
This sexy, hot, dark, and witty book surprised me. I wasn’t expecting the touching character development or the intriguing plot. Levana and Anika’s friendship was the sweetest thing ever and I just loved it. Made me miss my best friend!
It had a bit of a will-they-won’t-they element as well as some of the following tropes
- he fell first
- vampires
- enemies to lovers
- kidnapped
- special powers
- found family
I think it was a great read and a great story. I gave it 4/5 because some of the dialog in the second half of the book just didn’t flow very naturally and felt a bit clunky.
Also, the spice meter is at least a 4/5. The spicy scenes left me blushing and rapidly turning the pages. Definitely explicit and graphic so wouldn’t recommend for readers under 18+.

I’ll start by saying that I haven’t read many retellings of the Hades and Persephone myth, so I can’t compare it to other popular retelling. However, ever since I read the book description and requested an ARC from NetGalley, this was one of my most anticipated reads. So, many thanks to Netgalley and the author for allowing me to read "Masters of Blood" before it came out. Without further ado, let’s dive into this spicy fantasy romance.

“Masters of Blood” by Karolina Wilde is a thrilling novel that reimagines the timeless tale of Hades and Persephone through the lens of vampires. The story was fast-paced and easy to read.

Masters of Blood is a retelling of Hades and Persephone, but with vampires and humans. The narrative revolves around Orion, a vampire ruler hailing from the realm of Obridora, and Levana, a princess who is human. During a gathering of leaders, Levana is publicly introduced for the first time in her entire existence, catching Orion’s attention. Orion is instantly attracted to her, but she doesn’t even acknowledge him because vampires have a bad reputation among humans. When Orion discovers that he is promised to the solitary human ruler in their realm, he realizes he must step in, even if it means kidnapping her and potentially initiating a war, to obtain what he desires the most.

What I loved
Karolina Wilde masterfully weaves together elements of passion and plot, creating a story that keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end. The blend of spice and storyline is expertly executed, and I enjoyed the incorporation of the shadows into those scenes as well.

Throughout the narrative, Levana, the FMC, underwent substantial character development. Levana started off as a timid and sheltered girl, lacking emotional maturity and being taken advantage of by her family. With the progression of the story, her self-assurance increased. While I absolutely loved Orion’s character, his quick wit, and his explicit language, I couldn’t help but feel that his character lacked the depth that Levana had. Although we did receive some additional details about him towards the end, I still yearned for more.

What didn’t resonate with me
I enjoyed this story, but I think the pacing occasionally falters, veering between moments of languid exploration and hurried escalation.

4.5/5 (I rounded up)

Want to dive into a world filled with vampires and human kings and queens where a powerful vampire king falls in love with a human princess?
This spicy standalone romantasy will grab you and hold tight. The book is mainly character-driven for the first 75% but then the plot intensifies. The author throws some plot twists in there and ends the book on a good note and wanting more! The second standalone in the series isn’t out until August 2024. I will mark my calendar! In the meantime, I think I will explore some more of her work. I think I might try House of Pain (Precious Villain series) because it is a dark romantasy with witches in an academic setting. My favorites!

I received this book from NetGalley. The cover and the book description pulled me in. I’m so glad it did. Great weekend read!

👑 Characters: I absolutely adored the main and secondary characters. They each had their own personalities, and the witty banter was fun to read. I loved the deep connections in the book and the loyalty between the characters. I enjoy reading books with strong female characters and this book didn’t disappoint. The MMC is swoon worthy! I felt as though all the characters were relatable.

⚔ Plot: Though I enjoy plot-driven stories, this plot line was intriguing and captivating. I loved the addition of the prophecy and the twin flames. I also like the found family aspect. The plot was so enjoyable and had me swoony one minute, laughing the next all while rooting on the characters. I need more of Levana and Orion!

✔ Read this book if you like: vampires, shadow magic, twin flames, connection with nature, political intrigue, prophecy, royalty, and much more!

🩸 Masters of Blood follows the story of Levana, a human princess in distress with a controlled life that's been decided for her, and Orion, a mysterious, morally-grey vampire king that decides to kidnap and marry her.

⭐⭐⭐ | 🌶️🌶️🌶️¾ | Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

🩸A premise that reminded me of an Hades x Persephone retelling and that delivered a dark, goth, spicy romance -but also focused on the growing love binding between Levana and Orion. A reading option if you want to try a dark romance for the first time (this one is pretty 'vainilla') and/or you also care about dark romantasies having a plot.

🩸That being said, I found the pace to be inconsistent for me: as hooked as I was for the premise, I felt the first 25% of the book had little interactions between the main characters. Levana hates Orion and avoids him, and he avoids her aswell. There's no space to really build any romance tension apart from that, but also I feel it does not really emphasizes the enemies-to-lovers trope -and it doesn't last very long.

🩸After that, the book turns into a romantasy with dark romance, spicy scenes that are well written and that take into consideration topics such as consent and respect between partners - something I really value.

So I would recommend this book if you:
-Are looking for a 'vainilla' dark romance to read
-Like spice but also romance
-Want a simple, easy to read romantasy book

Things I did not like as much:
-Enemies to lovers trope was not really in the plot (only about a 25% of little interactions)
-A little bit predictable and slow pace

P.s.: read the tw list first🙏

Hmmm! A vampire husband huh? I would love me some of that! Masters of Blood is a romantasy about the young princess Levana and the young, by vampiric standards, king Orion. The king falls immediately in love when he first lays eyes upon her, and decides to take action in order to stop the upcoming nuptials between her and Nikolas, the king of a neighboring realm.

And so the story begins. Some of the early advances of our beloved king Orion, that occur in the beginning of the story would definitely be considered toxic and criminal offenses in the real world, but in the romantic fantasy novels we turn a blind eye! It is a very cute love story, with heartwarming expressions of love like decapitating anyone who would be a potential threat, spicy scenes that would make you jealous but also happy about the lovers, and no boring chapters in between.

Even though I read it in 2 days time, I stumbled upon constant repetition of words and phrases like smirked smiles, rolling eyes, curling toes, cupping body parts etc, and the writing in general was not very profound. Also, at the start of the story I could not understand her attraction towards the king...no spoilers here, just my thoughts.

The love story is very cute (even though not that original), and I would really want to learn more about the princess’ best friend, Anika! I look forward to the second book of the series, hopefully with a tab more refined writing.

If you loved the ACOTAR universe, if you are crazy about an enemies to lovers vibe, if you think that a Vampire could teach you how to live (Orion definitely can, by the way), you will definitely enjoy this book!

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book. This review is my honest opinion.

This book has great “bones” but there are a few things that broke the magic of the story.

First, the good:
I enjoy forced proximity romance, I don’t know why- but it is my guilty pleasure. Kidnap a girl at her engagement dinner? Yes, please. There is plenty of romantic tension a political intrigue to keep a girl up at night reading until the wee hours. The interaction between our main character and Orion, excellent. I really enjoyed these aspects of the story.

Things I did not enjoy- Orion ALWAYS smirking…..I wish he had a different expression. He smirked so much, it became a distraction to an otherwise fantastic story. The other issue was the fact our heroine was kind of a brat. Yes, I know she was abducted from her engagement and taken against her will- but for 200 or so pages she was a jerk, just to be a jerk. At every turn Orion is trying to demonstrate that he has her best interest at heart, and she allows intimacies then for no reason I can see, turns on him and just acts like a brat. He continually has patience and makes allowance for this behavior. Then, out of nowhere, she decides she loves him and stops with the theatrics. It was a little jarring, and didn’t feel “real”. It was more aggravating than endearing.

All in all, I enjoyed the book and it was an original idea. I really liked Orion, not so much Levana. She could have been a wonderful heroine, but just left me a little aggravated at her immaturity. This book is worth the read, and could be GREAT, but only warranted three stars because of the aforementioned things I didn’t enjoy much.

DNF'ed at 50%

Thank you NetGalley and Xpresso Book Tours for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was intrigued by this book, and the intertwining of the Hades & Persephone myth with vampires, but I could not get into it and ended up DNFing it at 50%. My biggest problem with this book is that I feel like it didn’t adhere to the typical Hades & Persephone themes that make me like that myth so much. It was LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT for Orion (the Vampire King/our Hades) which does follow with the mythology, but this first glance love happened in the prologue for the book. This meant I didn’t even have a chance to connect with these characters individually before the entire book became about them as a unit, whether they were fighting or falling.

However as the story continued it also became clear that Levana (the stolen princess/our Persephone) was falling in love very very quickly. The ultimate reason I decided to stop reading the book was because by the 50% mark I felt like Levana had fallen for the man who kidnapped her without much reason, other than Orion = sexy. I felt no connection to Levana nor Orion because the stakes felt so low within their relationship. I did love Levana’s best friend Anika, but as I read more the connection I felt to Anika only heightened my lack of connection to Levana. Ultimately this book was fine, and I could have finished it, but the absolute apathy I felt to the story and two main characters would have made it a drag.

First of all, thank you to NetGalley and Karolina Wilde for allowing me to read the ARC to "Masters of Blood" in exchange for an honest review.

Think Hades and Persephone, but make it human and a vampire.

King Orion sees Levana and immediately decides that he needs to have her. After trying every legal way possible and failing, he does steal her away and takes her to his kingdom, where he weds here, and this is where the story truly starts.

But there is more to it than an obsessive, forced relationship that blooms into more, we also do follow an immense character development of Levana, the princess who never used her voice, who was used in the grand scheme of political games and her climb to become a powerful persona, a queen, and finally taking what she wants, and saying what she wants.

“Go to hell.”
King Orion smirked. “Only if you go with me.”

This must have been my favourite quote from the book and it did weasel its way into being one of my favourite quotes of all time.

The book contains many beloved tropes, like the already mentioned forced relationship, but there is also forced proximity, enemies to lovers, touch my wife and die, my wife ... my queen, obsessed male lead.

Though, I will have to admit, as per usual my favor lies with the side characters, I wished there would had been more on Saxon and Lestat, maybe another time, another book.

The spice scenes were spicy and hitting just right.

A very enjoyable read, great for every lover of vampire love stories!

Loved this book and definitely will be finishing the series!!

Pros:
•Orion is HAWT HAWT HAWT🥵🥵🥵
•The world building was perfect for me! Not an overbearing amount, but not too little! We get to learn everything through Levana’s pov which is great because she’s learning all things vampire for the first time too!
•The side characters were lovable! I am a sucker for side characters and Anika, Lestat, and Saxon were such amazing side characters! I love the personality we seen from each one and how they interacted with each other and with Orion and Levana!
•This story stayed true to a good bit of the “vampire lore.” Like this novel did discredit some things like sleeping in coffins or burning in sunlight, but majority of things were what you believe to be vampires!
•Orion’s explanation for why he did everything he did🥹
•Levana’s character development was so good! She went from this sheltered princess, to someone who fought for herself and stood her ground against anyone!

Cons:
•Around the midway point, I felt like I hit a lull in the plot. Nothing was really happening, but I also feel like it was essential to the relationship development between Orion and Levana, if that makes sense?
•I wish the basement was explained in the actual book. I did download the bonus chapter, but I really feel like this could’ve made this a 5 star read for me if it was actually the epilogue! The prologue is the only chapter we have in Orion’s pov, and I think the bonus chapter would’ve been the perfect epilogue since it is also in his pov!

I want to begin by thanking the author and NetGalley for this advanced copy to review. I appreciated the opportunity, and I read it all straight through. I think the world building was the most interesting part for me, and I loved the relationship between Anika and Levana. They felt authentically like best friends, and both being princesses made them the perfect peer pair. The political intrigue is another strength with different kingdoms on the brink of war, pulling one another in through alliances where nothing is what it seems.
Unfortunately, this book felt much longer than 380 pages. It took me nearly a week to read due to the continuous errors in spelling (plump for plum, armory for armoire, etc., came up more than once) grammar, particularly verb tense, and tone were also inconsistent. Normally that is easy to overlook in an advanced copy, but in this case it was extremely distracting and hard to read. The characterization was flat, and often the dialogue did not match the character or scene, especially in conversations between Levana and Orion, who wavered between extremely formal and informal language with one another. Motivations were frequently either not explained at all or not believable. There is a lot of spice included, but I found myself skimming over it quickly. I didn't buy the explanation of the connection between the two main characters, and the spice felt more awkward than anything.
Again, thanks to Karolina Wilde and NetGalley for this ARC.
