Eternal Enemies #2

Coven of Consequence

Rate this book
There’s something terribly wrong with the Castleway Circus.

When mortals happen inside its big billowy tents, they don’t always come out again, and the clown specters who haunt it won’t leave me alone. My partner, Quiet, insists we go and investigate. I’d rather have my hands nailed to a moving train—better chance of surviving that as a vampire than whatever haunts the circus.

She believes the specters who persist in making our lives more difficult mean no harm. They just want our help, she says. I’m not convinced. I want to be of assistance when there’s a case that needs solving; however, there’s certain things I’m not willing to give up.

Mainly, the one thing—one person.

I’m not willing to lose Quiet, and deep in my bones that’s what I believe will happen. If we go there, if we surrender to those tents and the mysteries contained inside, I’ll lose the only person I’ve ever loved. But Quiet is certain that if we avoid facing the consequences waiting for us there, I might just lose her anyway ...

This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart

Review copy was received from Publicity team. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Coven of Consequence is the second book, and final(?) book in the Eternal Enemies series/duology.  We are back with Quiet, our grumpy witch hiding cute little insect helpers in her pockets.  That might be strange but they go to a void space so don't worry about all the little creepy crawlies.  And Rorick, not just a vampire but thee vampire, also fated to be with Quiet in this word and many others.  There is a creepy clown circus associated with death that is tied to Quiet and Rorick.  They seem to be at odds about what needs to be done about the clowns...honestly I can't blame them.
“We aren’t investigating that bloody death circus,” he said, grinding his teeth. “I was clear on that!”
“Well, you’re not the boss of us!” I said, voice rising.
“You could have died!” Rorick roared.
Anita shot webbing at me. The sticky silk struck me gently in the cheek. It was like being slapped by a slightly chewed marshmallow.

If the witches have a god, her name is Hecate and she has a job for Quiet and Rorick, investigate his death.  This will lead them on an interesting journey into Rorick's past and the man he was before he died to become the first Vampire.  While the first book of the series Quiet and Rorick were enemies and partners in solving crime, this time around it seems that Hecate is more of their enemy.  With an interesting connection to Quiet and goals of her own, it is hard to say if she is helping the couple or leading them into certain doom for her own gains.

I enjoy Quiet and Rorick.  They have great banter, trust and a complete understanding of each other. Even when they fight now, they are fighting to protect the other person, unwilling to lose them.  They are off again on a new mystery to solve Rorick's first murder, figure out why death made him a vampire and let him return and figure out what is up with the freaky clown circus.  Also, try not to die if it can at all be helped.

This was a fun gothic mystery with so many cool elements.  Flying artifacts *cough* broom *cough*, insect and arachnid familiars, ghosts, illusions, haunted spooky mansion, shape changing ichors and psychopomps of death.  Not to mention an interesting train that might carry to supernatural living to places but also serves to ferry souls to death.  There are a few spaces that the story gets a little complicated if you aren't paying attention but overall it is a pretty interesting a quickly read intrigue.

Rorick and Quiet also get a little time to love one another.  The depth of the things they are willing to do to protect and save the other are sometimes a bit scary, but they can be scary people when they aren't figuring out spells, alchemical equations and solving murders.

It is almost the spooky season of fall and Halloween so if you are looking for some fun reading that will fall into the spirit of the season, the Eternal Enemies duology might just fit your needs.

What an amazing conclusion to Quiet and Rorick’s story!

I will say it again and again. This author’s writing style is magic and one of my favourite.
This book had it all- the amazing spookiness, wonderful characters, gothic atmosphere, humour and solid plot.
It’s also very easy to read and I was immersed in it in no time.

As usual Quiet was wonderful and Rorick matched her fabulously m.
Special mention for Anita, Gilbert and Quiet’s other entourage. I loved how the clowns were woven in to the story and my heart broke for them.
But I did get a little confused in the end about Hecate and Quiet’s connection and the revelation in the climax. Had to sit and think about the overall plot to understand the whole picture.

Overall a very enjoyable read.

-Book 2 in a duet.
-Gaslamp Romance.
-Grumpy x grumpy.
-Spooky scenes, Clowns and other creatures.
- Vampire x Witch.
-KU, safe and recommended.

4.5 stars.

This is beautifully written. I'm not concerned with clowns so that part did not bother me but be warned, there are lots of clowns in this.

Sometimes I get annoyed because authors do data dumps for their world building. This one, I'm still not totally sure what happened tho the world building seems very complete and thought out.

It's lovely and I enjoyed reading it.

And the duet is complete! After the Coven of Ill Repute, the story is beautifully wrapped up in the Coven of Consequence, Book 2 of the Eternal Enemies by S. L. Prater, providing a satisfying closure to the series.

Coven of Ill Repute was such a precious, cosy yet spooky read with great dialogue, a true mystery murder, excellent detective skills, a haunted house with its many secrets, magical beings, clowns, a circus-like atmosphere at times, intelligent twists and plots, and a precious love story to top it all off. There is also excellent world-building, with crumbs ideally left to set up the story to follow.

And oh, how did the story continue! Coven of Consequence brought up the perfect closure, answered our many questions and rounded up the story. Even though our detective duo had its share of relationship struggles, I feel like they emerged even stronger and better as a couple and as a detective duo. All the mysteries and riddles that were a massive part of Book 1 were present in Book 2 as well. We had the clowns, the specters, the mirrors, the animal sidekicks—everything was interwoven into a tapestry of mysteries, romance, gothic atmosphere, excellent banter and exciting twists and turns.

What may you find in the Coven of Consequence?
- Book 2 of the Eternal Enemies duology
- gothic romance & gaslamp fantasy
- mysteries and riddles
- fated mates
- witches and vampires
- insect sidekicks
- hidden identities
- plot twists
and a perfect closure to a beautiful story!

✨Coven of Consequence✨

Anything Prater writes, I’ll read. It’s true. I have loved every book so far.

In this creepy, gothic fantasy mystery, we are getting the finale to the duet of Coven of Ill Repute, where reluctant allied detectives uncover the mysteries of Purgatory and their past.

We once again follow our bossy entomologist witch, Quiet, and our broody vampire, Rorick, as they are forced to work together once again. But this time it’s not just murders and a creepy house out to get them, but clowns, their past, and even the gods.

Prater has such an astonishing way of writing. Each story is so unique and yet they are all so equally delightful and joyful to read. This one harbors the same! Interesting wand choices and magic styles, hidden identities, incredible banter, creepy riddles, and such swoony spice. And in both book 1&2, when the characters are turned into children, it is simply the best and one of my favorite parts.

Tropes you may find in COC are fated mates, star crossed lovers, mysteries, witty banter, spice 3/5, forced proximity, gothic gaslamp fantasy, witches, vampires, and clowns, hidden identities, and plot twists!

Thank you so much for this gifted arc. I loved every minute.

Coven of Consequence is a delightful and thoroughly satisfying conclusion to the duology. It expertly balances a dark, haunting atmosphere with moments of levity and heart. The ending is immensely satisfying. There’s great spice and banter throughout, and the humor woven into the narrative offers a wonderful counterbalance to the darker elements.

The relationship between Rorick and Quiet is the heartbeat of this story. What I loved most is how real their relationship feels—they aren’t perfect, they don’t always see eye to eye, but they work through their disagreements with a depth of understanding and love that is so refreshing. There are some moments in the beginning where they could allow everything to fall apart, but they mean so much to one another. Their dynamic is filled with tension and tenderness, and it’s clear they genuinely adore each other, even when they are at their worst. It’s a rare thing to find a fantasy romance that portrays such an authentic partnership and they feel stronger for their trials.

I particularly enjoyed the mystery surrounding Quiet and Hecate, which adds a huge amount of layers to the plot. The magic system in this book is fascinating, especially the unique tie between Quiet and the insects—I have a special love for bugs, so yeah. It was a bigger aspect of the first book, but I love the returning named insects. I'm trying not to be too nerdy here.

My only minor gripe? The clowns—because I hate them so much, but honestly - this is more about the characters and their story. Highly recommend!

Thank you so much for the ARC SL Prater! This is my honest and voluntary review.

Coven of Consequence is the completion of the Eternal Enemies Duology and it was perfection.

Our unlikely partners, Quiet and Rorick, are back to uncover another mystery. This time they are sent to figure out what is going on at Castleway Circus and along the way they are both confronted with lost memories and haunted pasts.

I will never get over the banter between Quiet, our know it all witch, and Rorick, the ever grumpy vampire. I was so excited to see Anita and Gilbert again, along with the rest of the lovable bug troupe.

I’m trying not to spoil anything so please just read this cozy, gothic, gaslamp, mystery fantasy.

Having read the ARC for the Coven of Ill Repute back in April, I signed up for a last-minute ARC for Coven of Consequence via Book Sirens.

I knew the premise of Quiet and Rorick's story and the cliffhanger ending from Book 1so I was already intrigued about the plot for Book 2.

The gothic atmosphere is again intrinsically linked with the rich worldbuilding. Mixed with murder, mystery, and a dash of meddling. Unanswered questions from Book 1 were revisited, and each with a satisfying conclusion.

The depth of the storytelling from a perspective of a potential multiverse plot, but going deeper I felt that there were so many more allegories within certain characters (they Psychopomp especially reminded me in description of a seraphim or Thrones)

There was a juxtaposition between the gothic atmosphere and the depictions of divine and ethereal creatures that have a transcendent and otherworldly nature - celestial entities that exist outside comprehension.

Another truly captivating paranormal mystery blending gorhic victorian aesthetics, with supernatural elements. Excellent Worldbuilding and more character development with a plot that was intriguing and suspenseful.

I was so excited to get back to these 2! But honestly, it took me a bit to get through it.

I struggled the first half of the book with both Quiet and Rorick. I just couldn’t find my love for the characters as I did in the first book. I felt like the chemistry wasn’t quite there, but it did a quick flip towards the end. I get that they’re at odds again in the beginning, but it kinda felt too much?

As far as the story- I think the plot was definitely intriguing especially since we got a good glimpse of it in the first book, but it just felt a little too chaotic for me. I was honestly confused for more than half of the book, which kept pulling me out of the overall story and not as excited about jumping back in? I was getting a little whiplash at the beginning trying to understand which pov or memory I was reading.

I do appreciate the depth and the complexity of fate and consequences involved, but with a multiverse plot, I felt like it needed to be fleshed out a bit more? So overall, still enjoyed the book and appreciated the riskiness of the plot for a romance, but was just hoping it would have been easier to follow.

Thank you booksirens for the advanced copy & an opportunity to read and review voluntarily.

While I really enjoyed this follow up to Coven of Ill Repute, I was a bit thrown by the way Quiet and Rorick were interacting with each other at the very start of the book. After the end of book one, I thought they’d be in a better place, but Quiet was still so hostile and Rorick was just, well, Rorick. Thankfully things all work out in the end for them but not without some craziness in between… like clowns at an evil-ish circus… if you’ve got coulrophobia… well, this might not be for you. We see familiar faces/creatures throughout the book (Hecate, Quiet’s bug friends, etc.), delve into our characters’ pasts, learn some crazy secrets, get a nice dose of witty and snarky banter, and a dash of spice. Overall, I enjoyed this wrap up to the series and found it really entertaining. It’s really different to what I normally read (much more lighthearted) so it was a great reset in between darker, heavier books.

If you’re looking for a book with Victorian/gas lamp vibes mixed with a supernatural Sherlock Holmes, plus fated mates, witches, vampires, clowns, snarky banter, plot twists, and a truly unique storyline… this book is for you!

I love the dual povs again of Quiet and Rorick. I really like we get to see more of Hecate and how she plays into the story.
It is dark, macabre and full of mystery that needs solving. I have an rational fear of clowns and this has played into that, they're terrifying! Goose and astor are a great addition.

The scene with Rorick and Quiet when he was " fixing " her was delicious! So much chemistry.

“He’s not just a vampire. He’s the vampire!”

I felt for Dominion and his part to play in the story.
There's banter aplenty again and features from all the magical critters.

"In every way that mattered, it did belong to me. Just as my dead heart belonged to her. For all eternity and in every lifetime, we belonged to each other."

I have to address the second spice scene. It gave me the ick. Please, the word " her sex" " bundle of nerves" and plundered weren't a good look, just no! The rest of it though was hot.

I did get a bit confused with certain aspects of the story, especially the time slips and why they were doing what they were doing. Ultimately though it was another great installment.

I missed these two!

This time Rorick and Quiet have been rather decisive when it comes to saving the children. Rorick does not want to deal with the clowns, and Quiet does. So, they are at an impasse.

But then, Rorick is tasked by Hecate to solve a murder…his own murder. And he needs Quiet’s help, and it may involve the clowns after all.

Once again, spooky and eerie with that added coziness. I think this one was a tad bit darker than the first one because of what’s involved and more sad 😢

However, such a good book filled with ALL the banter and spiciness I love with these two! And to see how much would they sacrifice for their love and to be together forever based on what’s at stake. It made for a riveting read and I couldn’t put it down.

It’s a great follow up to the first one with some added twists and more cozy spookiness. As always, I definitely recommend S.L. Prater’s books!

I received a free e-ARC to read(thank you to the author and BookSirens). All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Coven of Consequence was a solid sequel to Coven of Ill Repute. I did find that I liked it just a tiny bit less than book one, but I think that’s probably because I really loved the locked in type setting in the first book. This duet has been a really great cozy yet gothic romantic mystery, and I think it’s perfect for spooky season.

Quiet and Rorick’s relationship was quite cute in the series as a whole. It was a little odd at the very beginning of this book, given the way book one ended, though I did understand their disagreement. The clowns were just as creepy as they were in book one, and I wouldn’t want to go near their circus either.

Overall, this duet is a super quick and fun read perfect for fall. I would absolutely recommend checking it out!

Thank you BookSirens and S.L. Prater for the ARC of Coven of Consequence. All opinions are my own.

This was a fantastic follow up to Coven of Ill Repute. I loved getting to be back with Quiet and Rorick. These two have such a fun dynamic. It was I getting to see where they were at the start of this book (not too long after the events of book one) and how their relationship changed through out this story. Also loved getting to see Quiet’s sisters again. I loved the atmosphere again. The gothic vibes, some creepy clowns, mystery, and even a little bit of cozy thrown in made for a great time. Again the story and mystery kept me locked in. I enjoyed that we got to see more into things we started to learn in book one. Overall I have a great time with this duology!

Gosh I love Quiet and Rorick so much 😭 The atmosphere of these gothic, paranormal romances has me in a chokehold. I was super happy with how this story played out even if I was super annoyed with both Quiet and Rorick at points (lol).

Coven of Consequence was a delightful and entertaining end to this series. I thoroughly enjoyed the continuation and closure of Quiet and Rorick’s story in this cozy gothic romance. All the loose ends from Coven of Ill Repute came to a satisfying resolution and answered any questions I was left with. I really enjoyed Prater’s magic world building and found it filled with existing mythos and new world building elements. It’s the perfect read to get ready for fall!

🌶️ moderately spicy

- gothic romance
- little buggy familiars, mossy floors, gothic castles and ghostly specters vibes
- grumpy witch and charming (but grumpy) vampire
- yearning, and longing, and desperation
- Gilbert’s back!
- gothic lore and spells
- spicy spicy spice 🤌🏻
- touching and romantic
- great pacing

Ohhhhhhhh I love this book. I cried. I laughed! I died a little and then was reborn from the ashes with a happy ending. Quiet is, quite possibly, my favorite lady character in the whole of the gothic romance genre. I LOVE how SL Prater does witches- whimsical, quirky, misunderstood, cozy, funny, particular, and little hints of ‘she-could-murder-you-easily-but-values-life-too-much.’ Rorick is a DREAM vampire, and easily top 5 vampire book boyfriend material. He’s FERAL for her, will stop at nothing for her safety, and cherishes her, noticing and adoring her little eccentricities. I love them. I wish I could know them. WE WOULD TOTALLY BE BEST FRIENDS. If you love anything about spooky season and romance - HERE IS THE BOOK. HERE IS THE SERIES.

Quiet and Rorick are at odds, in the beginning, both wanting to rid themselves of the clown specters that haunted them in the last story, but at deeply different odds with how to go about it. Quiet has been keeping secrets, despite her promises to always include him, and has been investigating on her own. Rorick still has pieces of himself to discover in his lost memories, and as they are unearthed, he quickly realizes… he does want to be that version any longer. They quarrel with each other, fight death and witches and ichors, and try to keep themselves together, while the worlds and meddlesome constants keep tearing them apart.

"There isn't anything I won't do to be with you. You know that, don't you?"

She hooked her long legs around my waist, tugging me closer. "I know that."

Her words rang with sincerity, but I sensed that this kind woman whom so many mistook for being difficult and contrite deeply underestimated exactly how far I'd go to make sure nothing - and no one - kept me from her. There was no limit. No line I wouldn't cross, no matter whom such transgressions might upset.

Even the gods.

Even her.

(4.5⭐️)

I know I say this every time I finish another S.L. Prater book, but I will never get tired of the cozy vibes, banter, and emotional poignancy in her books. And Coven of Consequence more than met all of those well-established expectations.

It was nice to spend time with Rorick and Quiet again. The mystery of the haunted circus is just a fraction of what Steph has woven throughout this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed the mental challenge of trying to guess or anticipate each secret in advance of it being revealed. Truth be told, a lot of the revelations in this entry of the Eternal Enemies duet I did not see coming, and I love that.

The grumpy/grumpier vibe between our delightful detective duo was just as entertaining as it was in the last installment, the banter top notch and the hallmark quirkiness I've come to expect from Steph's books ever-present. But I will say that the added tension of the pair being in a well-established relationship while still having moments of friction when their mutual stubbornness came to a head was excellently written.

"We could have confronted him, you know."

"After that alchemy exchange, I'm still not feeling quite up to snuff."

"I am," she said, fisting her wand like it was a broadsword. "All you had to say was 'ichor, get him' and I'd have seen to it!"

"If you cursed him into a bee, we wouldn't be able to question him."

"It may be hard for you to believe this," she said sternly, "but I don't go around cursing everyone into an insect. Goose taught me a curse that makes a person's bowels go loose and they heave all over. I haven't had a cause to use it yet. That could have been my moment. I imagine after a person is made empty like that, their tongue wags easier."

Laughter rumbled out of me. "And no doubt you would have performed the curse spectacularly, but we have more pressing matters to attend to, and it would look to anyone else who happened to see like you'd just cursed an innocent man. Didn't you recently tell me there's too much for us to juggle to be dealing with criminal charges?"

Her sigh was resigned. "You make a valid point."

Quiet's menagerie of insect and arachnid familiars don't have as big of a role in this book as they did in Coven of Ill Repute, but it was nice to see Gilbert and Anita again. Poor Gilbert is still recovering from his close call in the previous book, but Anita more than makes up for it with her sassy, take-no-bullshit spidery ways. I swear, only Steph could make a giant sentient spider sound cute.

The overarching plot, however, regarding Rorick and the mystery behind not only who he is (since that was solved in the last book) but all of his lost memories, etc. was endlessly fascinating. We get to spend additional time with Hecate (and I have all of the complex feelings regarding her, even with that finale), and a few of the witches from Quiet's coven. I very much enjoy Steph's side characters in her books and this one was no exception.

The main conflict and climax tugged hard on my heartstrings and squeezed a few tears out of me. I was confident that the consequences of all these interwoven plot threads coming to a head would work themselves out somehow, but it was enjoyable seeing how Steph chose to tackle it. And her nod to Greek mythology with the expansion of Hecate's role and the introduction of a few other new characters felt simultaneously familiar, yet fresh.

My only complaint - and I will readily admit this is purely subjective - is that this is marketed as a gothic romance. In my personal opinion, I'd classify this more as paranormal romance with a handful of gothic vibes on the side. Coven of Ill-Repute definitely felt more gothic in comparison, even though upon reflection, I'm not entirely sure I'd classify that as a proper gothic romance either. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy either books - because I enjoyed them immensely. It's more of a marketing nitpick. Oh well.

Still had a great time, and while I'm sad that this duet is over, I'm excited to see what Steph writes next!

"This letting you call the shots thing is tiring."

"Don't worry, love," I teased. "I won't get used to being in charge. I like it too much when you boss me about." Hovering over her, I propped myself up on my arm. With her in a hunched position, I towered. "You're handling all this very well. So well in fact, I think you deserve a reward."

The corner of her mouth curled up. She tugged on the lapel of my coat affectionately, drawing me in closer. "A reward, eh? Tell me more about this reward."

I lowered my head, inhaling her scent of earthy herbs, wildflowers, and citrus, until my lips grazed the shell of her ear.

"You've been such a good witch," I whispered, delighting in the way she shivered. "I'm going to reward you with... math," I said, drawing out the term like it was the most debauched word I'd ever spoken.

Her eyes popped wide, and her lips parted. "Oh," she cooed, "I do so like math." The giggle that escaped her was too sweet to not kiss her. I wanted to inhale the sound of her mirth. In the chill, her heat engulfed me. Her laughter tickled my lips and filled my mouth. The gift of her blood beat through my body, firing my veins.

She tasted like life. Like resilience and passion and competence. I could kiss her all night until the sun rose and the slumber took me. I'd collapse there on the walkway, unconscious and happy.

5⭐️ - S. L. Prater did it again, i cried like a little bitch

« I could feel that strong beat I craved thumping steadily against my chest like it was my own. Like it belonged to me. In every way that mattered, it did belong to me. Just as my dead heart belonged to her. For all eternity and in every lifetime, we belonged to each other. »

We're back to following Quiet and Rorick in this 2nd book of the Eternal Enemies series, and boy did I miss these two characters. Quiet's grumpiness and bossiness, and Rorick's charm and protectiveness. They are a hot pair of nerds. There was a LOT of mysteries to unravel in this book and it didn't disappoint one bit.

Quiet and Rorick are investigating the circus we've heard so much about in book 1, or should i say Quiet is investigating it – Rorick is trying to prevent her from doing it, but she's very stubborn and he loves her too much. A lot of things happened, many characters and beings were introduced and i got a bit lost in it all, but at the end EVERYTHING made sense. Everything was connected. Fate, destiny and consequences are the key words of this book, and S. L. Prater was able to write a great "everything happens for a reason" book. All was intricate and logical, so many things happened centuries ago in different worlds, and had a full impact on today.

I was flabbergasted ngl. The way my jaw dropped SO many times when i finally understood wtf was going on is crazy. Just like in book 1, there wasn't a time i got bored, just... brilliant.

I LOVE S. L. Prater's writing style, it feels like a children's tale, but for adults, which makes it extremely comforting. It's magical, without being foolishly naive, idk if it makes sense. I was truly at peace reading her 2 books, although the vocabulary was sometimes a bit too difficult for a non-native English speaker - but idgaf it was poetic and beautiful and cool.

Quiet and Rorick are so dear to my heart, they were so intense it made me physically ache. I could feel their passion, their emotions, their hardships, I was sad when they were sad, I was angry when they were angry. I love them sm dayum.

Prater concludes the Eternal Enemies duology with Coven of Consequence (released September 6th, 2024), raising the stakes (and pace) as Quiet, Rorick, and co. face the consequences of their actions. What starts out as a slow and drawn out look at the couple's dysfunctional romantic relationship becomes a horror-mystery mash-up where neither Quiet nor the reader knows whether to trust the ever-present clowns guiding our MCs on their journey.
There are many satisfying aspects to this story. Prater remains the Monarch of Banter and Side Characters. Plot lines from Book 1 are not forgotten. In fact, they become the basis of a new quest for Rorick, coming back to rear their heads later in surprising ways.
Essentially, if I were to use only three words to describe this duology, it would be "endless plot twists."
On a personal note, I struggled with how Quiet treated Rorick in Book 1 and found her just as inconsiderate and selfish in Book 2. Rorick, although not the best communicator, truly does go to the ends of the earth for his lover and she... would rather argue than consider his (very valid) point of view. Not to say she has to agree or follow it, but she could at least not listen before arguing. Aside from that, I found some of the adjectives used highly repetitive and/or that I needed to use a dictionary to know what some words meant, to the point that it affected how certain sections of the story read for me.
My new pet peeve: the word "spend". I suppose I'm just not demure enough.
Regardless of my personal gripes, those who love women-worshipping sex between a consensual couple, extensive worldbuilding, and constantly being kept on your toes by endless plot twists will love Prater's latest enjoyable duo as she takes us into a world of Gothic romance where there are not only witches and vampires, but ichors, specters, werewolves, and clowns.

🪦🎪🕸 ARC REVIEW: Coven of Consequence by S. L. Prater 🕸🎪🪦

⭐️ 4.5
🌶 2.5

S L. Prater is a master storyteller! They took the unanswered questions and subtle breadcrumbs from book 1 and blew the world of Purgatory wide open.

As gothic/gaslamp urban fantasies go, this story's worldbuilding is lush and detailed. A city in the midst of the industrial revolution, the mix of trains and horse-drawn carriages, cobblestone streets and abandoned dirt roads, circus tents and brownstone buildings created a vibrant city setting full of history.

The pervasive, haunting atmosphere throughout felt like a living, breathing character. While creepy and spooky at times, this story still didn't cross the line into horror territory for me. People with phobias of spiders, flying insects, ghosts and clowns might disagree.

The magical insect companions are so cute and loyal. I would die for them, especially Anita the spider, who is the MVP of the series.

Minor side characters that were introduced in book 1 suddenly became very important and prominent in book 2. Their identities and purposes were finally revealed and their demands were going to be met, one way or another.

The progression of the story was both unexpected yet natural. The lore, gods and paranormal creatures from book 1 suddenly became so much more, creating a fuller, broader, richer universe. I loved that some of my expectations and assumptions from book 1 were flipped on their head because of this.

My only criticism is that the ending felt a little rushed and too easily resolved. It felt a smidge anticlimactic, yet still evoked tension and anticipation.

Overall, I loved this book and duology. While each book had their own unique feel and story, they were still connected. Rorick and Quiet as MCs are both *chef's kiss*.

Having read the previous book, A Coven of Ill Repute, that followed the bickering investigative duo of Quiet, a witch, and Rorick, a vampire, I was presented to a well written plot, with a rich world building and realistic evolution of both characters' growth.

In book 1, after being trapped in a haunted castle to solve a crime, Quiet and Rorick faced many dangers, surrounded by silent, voyeuristic clowns, spying them on every mirror. As if that wasn't challenging enough, they were battling their lingering feelings and hurt from the past.
It was an exhilarating book that left us on a cliffhanger, eager for more.

Book 2 begins with Quiet and Rorick facing new troubles, both in their relationship as in their surrounding world.
Karma seems to have a way to come back to haunt us, as Rorick is can attest for. His forgotten past is the key to solve it all, but will they be able to do it all and stay together?

Coven of Consequence is the fitting end to the romantic gothic duology, and what a marvellous, twisty ending it was!

It maintains it's paranormal gothic atmosphere, full of magical and ethereal creatures, the intrigue, mystery and suspense, but most of all, it gives the reader a sassy, devoted, loving and highly protective of one another duo.

I love Quiet and Rorick, the lore, and the world of magic around them.

Hopefully, the author will give us more, if not more books, at least novellas about the main duo or about the lives of the other characters.

I fell in love with it all, with them, and I'm not ready to part with them.

This book was an ARC, and I'm thankful to the author and BookSirens for allowing me to read her duology. It was an immense pleasure to do so!

This is my honest, voluntary review.

After the conclusion of the events in Coven of Ill Repute, Quiet and Rorick find themselves once again at odds. Quiet wants to investigate the Castleway Circus and find a way to help the children. Meanwhile, Rorick is convinced that investigating the circus will result in Quiet's death, which is a risk he's unwilling to take. But as he starts regaining his memories, it becomes clear that there are more forces than just the Circus at work, and the two of them must work together to unravel the mysteries.

I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I like the characters Quiet and Rorick, and the gothic vibe of the first book was spot on. However, I found it harder to get into this book, as the relationship between Quiet and Rorick had devolved into more antagonism than I expected. The plot required a lot of running around, which lessened the gothic tone and feel.

Furthermore, there is a fairly ambitious plot twist that introduced a lot more complications. Without getting into spoilers, I did find the twist interesting, but I felt that the book needed to spend more time building up to it. The somewhat sudden introduction of a multiverse caused more chaos and contributed to a conclusion that ultimately felt rushed. I would have liked for the book to have taken a bit more time to create atmosphere, have the characters spend more than a fleeting chapter at the circus, and gradually build up to the twist.

Despite this book not being what I expected, it took some interesting risks and created a truly unique book.

Thank you to the author, via BookSirens, for a digital copy to review. All thoughts are my own.

This was a solid conclusion to this world. I adored Rorick and Quiet so much in Coven of Ill Repute, and I'm so glad Prater made this a duology so I could spend more time with my favourite banter-filled pair. As I expected, the banter and bossiness didn't disappoint with this sequel - I'm still thinking of that flying scene *insert me cackling here*

I liked the concept of Coven of Consequence, but I'll admit, there were times when it was a little confusing with all the storylines. They all matched up in the end, but it was sometimes a little tough to keep track of whether we were working towards Rorick regaining his memories, or saving the children at the circus, or Quiet was in danger again. The addition of Hecate's goddess/god storyline, whilst interesting, did interject at rather convenient points that interrupted the flow of the other parts of this book. I did like how Quiet's existence was a focal point in the conclusion and appreciated the culmination of the storylines merging as one. It was just the getting to that point that I struggled with at times, hence the dropping of a star rating.

The romantic portion of this world was much steamier this time around, with several sex scenes and a lot of suggestive moments, and I did appreciate their placement during the story progression. Rorick and Quiet as partners really solidified their connection in this book, and I enjoyed how possessive they were of each other.

I cannot wait to read what comes next from this author.

Title: Coven Of Consequence

Author: S.L. Prater

Synopsis: When mortals happen inside its big billowy tents, they don’t always come out again, and the clown specters who haunt it won’t leave me alone.

Review: What a fantastic sequel! I was completely enthralled with the story! I loved that this had a circus theme in it! I just eat it up! There is so much that has been uncovered in this book! I’m also sad to see that Quiet and Rorik go because they are so great together! I love their banter! I also felt like the book was short and I didn’t want for it to end! However, that ending was complete perfection and I couldn’t have asked for a better ending for Rorik and Quiet!

Thank you so much Book- Sirens for giving me the opportunity to read this wonderful Gothic Mystery!

Coven of Consequence by S.L. Prater
Eternal Enemies #2

Secrets revealed may have deadly consequences as magic is explored, death implored, and love is strengthened between vampire Rorick and his witch-partner Quiet. Great conclusion to what I believe is a duology. I do recommend reading book one – Coven of Ill Repute – before reading this book.

What I liked:
* Quiet: witch in the local coven that cares for orphans, has magical abilities, loves math, insects are drawn to her and are perhaps her familiars, wants to solve the puzzle of the Circus and to “save the children”, protective of and deeply loves Rorick
* Rorick: vampire, detective, Quiet’s partner, has lost some of his memories, finds out more about his past and himself in this book, wants to keep Quiet safe, doesn’t trust many, strong, protective, supportive, deeply loves Quiet
* The epigraphs at the beginning of each chapter that give perspective to the story
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing – especially the dialogue between Rorick and Quiet
* The insects…so much fun
* Finding out Hecate’s part in the story
* The support given by Quiet’s coven
* The twists and turns and conclusion I wasn’t expecting
* That by the conclusion everything was explained and neatly tied up in a bow

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about “sacrifice” and what one might be willing or unwilling to give up to achieve a purpose

Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Definitely

Thank you to the author and BookSirens for the ARC – This is my honest review.

If you're looking for your next witchy read, than look no further because this duology has everything you could wish for in a witchy romance. Perfect for the spooky season! 🧛🏻‍♂️🧹
A feisty, bossy witch who's love language is math and a good mystery to solve 🤭, and a vampire who loves being bossed by his beloved witch. Well, except for those times when Quiet gives him the control. 😉🥵
A host of supernatural creatures that give this story a light horror feel. If you find clowns scary, how would you feel about a clown that would make you paralized with fear after he takes off his make up?!
Enough adventure to keep you on your toes. Wether they follow their leads together, or apart, there's not a dull moment with Rorick and Quiet.
And when the spice gets spicing....🔥🌶️🔥🌶️
Last, but not least, keep your tissues near because you're gonna need them. 🤧🥺
There's a certain character who's actions enraged me, but at the same time I understand. At the end of the day Rorick also said there's not a single thing in this world he wouldn't do for Quiet. So, I can't exactly hold a grudge when someone does the same for their beloved. 🥺
Also, their actions lead Quiet and Rorick to where they're supposed to be, in the end, so, all is good.

Here are the tropes you'll find in Coven Of Consequence:

✨Witch and Vampire
✨Supernatural Detectives
✨Fated Love
✨Star Crossed
✨Haunted Circus
✨Gothic Mystery
✨Steamy

This duology is now completed, so, grab yours and get ready for the spooky season!

Thank you so much to SL Prater and Book Siren for offering me an ARC of this book! It's been a real adventure! 💖✨

"I myself have observed more than one thousand lifetimes. In each of them there is only one thing I would not change: having a love worth battling Death himself for."

"'Believe it or not, I don't enjoy being mean to you.' 'Yes, you do.' A breathy laugh shook her shoulders. 'All right,' she relented, 'maybe I like being mean to you a little. Sometimes.'"

This was a lovely conclusion to Quiet and Rorick's story, and it was extra special to me as the first book was my first ever ARC months ago!

I liked that even though they're together now, their dynamic hasn't changed too drastically. They are both very much still grumpy x grumpy, which was my favorite part of the first book. The difference is that now they are outwardly grumpy for each other, which is cute.

This wraps up the things that were hinted at in the first book, but I did find myself missing the enclosed mystery setting of the first book. I do understand why this one had to branch out more to tell a larger story, but I did miss it a little. Because of all the questions it needs to answer, this is much more sprawling adventure through Purgatory, with a little less of the classic detective work. The magic is really expanded on though, which I loved to see. I loved seeing more of Quiet's bugs, and learning more about Alchemy and other more broad kinds of magic and nuances of this world, especially the afterlife.

Overall, this book held true to the main pair's dynamic and wrapped up their story really nicely. I'll miss them!

Thanks to the author for the early copy of the book. This review was left voluntarily and all opinions are my own.

*ARC review*
What a story, it was a nice continuation of the 'Coven of Ill Repute' and we’ve got answers. The answers.

This part starts with troubled time, our Rorick (vampire) is in strange relationship with his lady Quiet (witch). She is kinda avoiding him and he is not amused. Their last detective case was solved but it brought new questions, unclear points from their past and sinister specters who lurk around.
So this book is bringing light to the dark and forgotten secrets and memories from Rorick's past and how it's all intertwined with Quiet's fate.
I like this story, but there were moments when i struggled to connect with our pair (maybe it was the writhing decision? Rorick and we are in the dark and understands nothing? if it was intentional...so clever and nicely done.
My favourite characters from this series are bugs :D You have no idea (but you can easily change this) how cute and helpful all those spiders, moth, ants and butterflies are. They even have personalities, sooo fun to read about them and their emotions.
In this story i have some questions about Hecate and her motivation, cause i'm not quite sure i totally understood her. Hoping for the book about her and her man :)
Overall it was a fun and emotional story to read, final 10% were full of tears, laughs, 'awwww' moments and fluff.

Definitely can recommend this book and series to read for all girls who love paranormal romance stories, especially in the autumn, i think it'll be a great combo!

Many thanks to S.L.Prater for sharing ARC copy with me in exchange for an honest review.
