Paint Our Song

Miles Curtis, a painter, owes his success to the popular band Cloverlily. Their music helped him get out of a slump many years ago, and he’s been a huge fan ever since. When he temporarily moves back home to help his family’s inn, he finds out that their guitarist, Calvin Lowe, is staying in one of their rooms.

Calvin, who turns out to be very quiet and withdrawn, is currently dealing with his band’s break-up. He makes it clear from the onset that he’s here to keep to himself. When he finds out that Miles is the painter he’s been wanting to meet, he seems more annoyed than anything else.

The two of them clash from the onset, but it doesn’t take that long for both of them to figure out that they have more in common than they initially thought–including being fans of each other’s work for years.

Paint Our Song is an m/m romance for those who love slow burns, opposites attract, strangers-to-lovers, and small-town novels.

I enjoyed Paint Our Song by Maya Kinley. I thought it was a fun, easygoing romance that had okay characters. However, I also think that there is room for improvement here.

On the one hand, I thought both Calvin and Miles were well-constructed characters, and had their personalities very clear from the beginning. On the other hand, I don’t think the other characters of the book were as well explored as them.

Another thing that made me a little confused

Overall, this was an entertaining book and there is a lot of potential in Maya’s writing. It is just fine tuning all this creativity and story flow. I think that writing a book is an extremely personal and brave act. My review is in no disrespect to Maya’s writing, it is the exact opposite. It is about seeing indie authors thrive and grow with the help of their audience (Like me!!). I will definitely keep an eye out for Maya’s future publishing and I expect to return to Ridgeford sometime in the future.

Paint Our Song by Maia Kinley is a great romance centering around the protagonist, Miles, who is an artist. One of his biggest inspirations is the band, Cloverlily, who is on the verge of breaking up. He has to change his focus when his family’s inn is found to be close to bankruptcy and his attempts to save it. The guitarist of Cloverlily, Calvin, ends up staying at his family’s inn and Miles and Calvin begin to form a friendship based off of mutual respect for the other’s craft.

I loved the characters in this story. They had great character development and I felt like I was able to get a good handle on who they were. I was rooting for their relationship by the end of the book. The background characters were also well characterized, which is something I have been having a hard time finding in my recent reads. I would 100% read a sequel in this series, especially if it is about who I hope it is about.

The plot itself was pretty predictable and a little slow paced, but honestly I do not go into a romance looking to be shocked. I feel like the story and the pacing fit the characters and what they were going through. Overall, I would give this book 4/5 stars. It was a sweet romance and I would recommend it to any romance lovers.

I could not put this book down! I wanted to keep reading and ignore all my responsibilities.

•artist x musician
•small town romance
•slow burn
•saving the family inn and it just so happens that one of the guests is in a popular band
•golden retriever x black cat
•meet disaster
•single pov

Miles has been a fan of Cloverlily since he listened to their debut song and was hired to paint their debut album cover. 5 years later, he returns to his family's inn to help save it. Who else is a guest besides the guitarist of his favorite band, someone who he pissed off multiple times on that first afternoon?

I loved really getting into Miles' head and experiencing the world through his eyes, and how he slowly falls for Calvin. Their friendship is such a strong starting block for them, and I loved seeing how they interacted. I enjoyed Miles' friendship with his best friend, Gabby, and also his relationship to his mom. I loved meeting Calvin's bandmates and seeing how their personalities combined into the popular band Cloverlily.

All around a great debut and I'm so excited to see what's next in this world!

A very nice story of two men each finding their muse. It was nice to see the two characters develop their relationship rather than just instantly falling into each other's laps. Miles was pulled out of his depression by the music created by Calvin and his band Cloverlily, the same band that Miles was commissioned to create the cover art for their first album. The song which lifted Miles from his depression was inspired by a painting that Calvin saw when visiting the inn owned by Miles’ family. Miles has returned home to help save the inn when Calvin checks in. Their interactions are stilted at the beginning with Miles fanboy behaviour and Calvin's wish to hide away as he deals with the band's breakup and his personal breakup. Finding out that they are both fans of the other's work brings them together if they can get past their insecurities and learn to communicate rather than jump to conclusions.

I really enjoyed this cute little read!

Miles is quite a lovable main character but I have to say my whole heart belongs to Calvin! He's so adorable and sweet and I kind of fell in love with him very early on.

Theo, Chase, Gil, Matt and Gabby are all great side characters too. They all have distinctive personalities and add a little more fun to the story.

The overall plot is great. It's a sweet slow-burn romance with plenty of drama and spice thrown in for good measure. I love the creative professions that both mcs have, too, I think that adds another layer of likability.

I think the only downside for me was the pacing. It felt like maybe the mcs got together a smidge too early, though I did enjoy all the well-written spice that followed!

Maia Kinley was a new author to me, discovered via BookSprout, and I am very glad that I found Paint Our Song. It was very cute and funny, and I'm always a lover of anything to do with rock bands and their fans. Is that me living vicariously through a book's characters? Most probably, but it doesn't make me love it any less.

I won't lie, I was a bit thrown by the fact that the book is written in third person but also in present tense. It did take me a few pages to get into this, because I wasn't sure if it was something I'd enjoy. I'm so used to first person present, or even third person past. But this was still written well and it didn't affect how much I enjoyed the story.

Miles and Calvin were just adorable - Miles was pure sunshine, while Calvin was a prickly pear. I won't dive into the plot because I don't want to spoil it, but I will say that this was a great debut novel for Maia Kinley, and I look forward to reading Chase and Gil's story next.

It’s been a while since I’ve read such a cute and fluffy book, and I forgot how much I loved it. Paint Our Song had me kicking my feet, smiling, and giggling. It was so cute, but also emotional. There were some deep scenes that had me tearing up so much.

Miles and Calvin were so perfect for each other. Their encouragement for the other was so beautiful. We all need someone in our corner to pick us up when we’re down. The development of their relationship was so well done and so natural. It was beautiful.

I adored Gabby so much. Without a doubt, both her and Chase were my absolute favorite characters. And I loved Miles’ relationship with his mom. It reminded me so much of my own.

I’m so excited for more from this world and from Maia Kinley.

I had a hard time putting this one down. It's an excellent debut novel, and I look forward to reading the next in the series (or anything this author cares to write).

it's a nice slow burn romance between a rock star and an artist. Both are well-known in their professions, and fairly well-off financially, so this is NOT a story about the musician rescuing a starving artist. There IS a plot to rescue the artist's family inn, but the help that is given there is more along the lines of social media exposure, not financial. I liked all the characters & can easily see how the next books could be about some of them. Although this was NOT a short book, I would still have been happy to have stayed in this small town longer.

I loved the premise of this romance. An artist, Miles, who finds his ability to create again through the music of his favorite band. How adorable that he gets to meet Calvin the drummer for said band. I enjoyed the slow and more realistic development of their relationship. Calvin was one of the sweetest guitarists I have every read about. Both wonderful characters. This was told from Mile's POV, and I think the only thing that would have made it better for me would have been getting a little bit from inside Calvin's head. But I absolutely loved everything both of them nonetheless.

I liked how the artists show their “artistic temper”, specially during the typical misunderstanding before the HEA. The side characters were likable and enjoyable, and the story was really cute! I enjoyed it, and it was pleasant to see the MCs surrounded by supportive people as well as selfish ones who were put in their place.

The story of Miles and Calvin. Miles, an artist and Calvin, plays in a band. These two people meet at a time in their lives when they both feel alone and misunderstood. I really enjoyed this story. It is a story that will certainly appeal to everyone. It's a slow burn, but oh, once it gets going it's a beautiful read.

Love this book!!! The pace of the story was good, didn’t drag on or feel rushed. I liked seeing Miles and Calvin get closer as they spend more time together. I loved that Calvin blushed a lot, it was adorable. I also really enjoyed how supportive they were towards each other and how they were each others muse/inspiration. I can’t wait to read about Gil and Chase.
