Scars Like Wings: The Crystal Dragon Duet Book One

Rate this book
When I was little, Mom would tell it to me like a fairytale, a story that couldn't be real. Little did I know how real the monsters were. And I'm not talking about the dragons.

When her mother was murdered, Byrd Pierce's world shattered. She lost so much, so young and she feared she'd never be able to recover. Years later, Byrd had not only picked up the pieces but had also mended them with gold. She has a job at a living magical library, a witch and a mermaid for best friends, and a closet with clothing that not only flatters her plus-size body but also makes her look hot AF.

When Quinn Garcia literally falls head over heels for her, Byrd thinks she's finally found her "okay" at last. But when Quinn compliments a back tattoo only she can see -one she doesn't actually have, at that- everything shifts. While trying to research the mysterious tattoo, Byrd finds a book that only she can open, containing one single sentence written in her mother's Are you ready to know the truth, Baby Byrd?

Suddenly, the mysteries surface and threaten to drown Byrd. Nothing from her friends to her past to Quinn is what they have always seemed. The further she dives, however, the more one solitary idea becomes her mother did everything to keep her safe. But at what cost?

I was given this as an ARC read and I am gonna update this as I am reading cause there’s a lot! Already I can tell this is gonna be a 5 star read.

AND this is the first book about dragons I’ve read (and I read so many) where it actually mentions the dragons size in feet!! So much better for visualizing it imo.

The COOLEST library I’ve ever read abt omg

This is a wonderfully creative concept and very well thought out. There were a lot of times that I couldn’t tell if it was meant to be cozy vibes or meant to be suspenseful, cause we as the reader know a lot more than the main characters at a lot of points. It was super interesting experience actually. Especially with the cliffhanger ending it makes me even more ponderous abt it.

The visuals were AMAZING, such a creative story. I’m definitely going to read the sequel.

The only negative thing I have to say abt it is just personal taste- there’s a lot of pop culture references but I don’t like those in general, but again that’s really just personal taste. I will say I think the addition of pop culture references and real life places makes it feel like more grounded in this world which can add to the feeling that the magic is literally right there.

Super inclusive and amazing, a lot of the time in the world I got the sense the writer was having a great time with like creative freedom and using her platform to promote inclusivity and diversity.

I was read this as a volunteer ARC reader.
I loved the articulated description of everything, it helped me build a picture in my head and I loved every second of it all.
From page one this book evoked so many emotions, but for me the main was anxiety only because I could see the connection of how Byrd and Quinn were tied. I predicted it but I was still very floored by the ending.
I am absolutely obsessed with this book and really hope that there is a sequel sooner rather than later, seriously applaud Chelsea J Leon for this book and opportunity.

Abridged review:
I absolutely DEVOURED this book. The lore is so rich and with every species you meet, you get some detailed history of what they are and how they work. The main plot and characters are so amazing and well-rounded as you go through their trials and tribulations with them.
The spice in this book is mostly towards the end but it was so well thought out and placed that they felt more organic. Overall I freaking loved this book and it is without a doubt one of my favorite reads of the year.

Full review:

As soon as I saw the ARC signup for this book I knew I needed to read it. I was immediately drawn to the artwork for Byrd and Quinn and I couldn’t wait to read a book where the FMC looked so much like me. Although I came for the artwork I was sat for the lore.
Where most fantasy novels are written in a far-off land where they only have magic and a lack of technology, I loved reading a story where the two coexist. As much as I love the faraway lands that other books have been set in I know I’m a modern technology girly so Blackbell would definitely be the place for me. 😂
I honestly LOVEDDDD Byrd and I love how she’s fat but she doesn’t hide it under clothes because she is also hot af and wants everyone to know it. But she also had these super relatable moments such as:

“Most days, I loved my body and how I looked, but then there were days where I felt like a blob playing dress-up with Barbie doll clothes.”

As a fat girl who loves to dress up and all things fashion, I felt this in my soul. While there were some sad moments, this book has such a good balance between the main characters' grief, and anxiety and all of the happy moments from the love and support they provide each other. AHHH I just loved all of Byrd and Quinn’s little support system.
There are some🌶️ scenes in the later half of the book but they are perfectly timed with just the right amount of build-up. Not to mention the YEARNING and the banter between the two love interests is just ✨chefs kiss✨, and had me giggling and kicking my legs like It was me. Overall I ate this book all the way up and it definitely is worth the read.

This review is written by a recipient of ann advanced reader copy of Scars Like Wings by Chelsey J. Leòn. Scars Like Wings offers a blend of young adult fantasy themes with a mature, queer adult romance. This novel features strong representation of lesbian and demisexual women of color, adding depth and diversity to the narrative.

The plot unfolds with a distinctly young adult feel, but don't let that fool you – the romantic elements are decidedly adult. The main character's relationship with her love interest is characterized by witty banter and intense chemistry, creating a dynamic that keeps readers eagerly turning pages. It's worth noting that while the book does contain smut, these scenes don't appear until later in the story, allowing for character and plot development to take center stage initially.

Leòn's writing shines through her fun and sassy characters, making "Scars Like Wings" an entertaining read from start to finish. The quippy dialogue and engaging personalities of the cast contribute to the overall enjoyment of the story.

This book is an excellent choice for a cozy weekend in, offering a perfect balance of comfort and excitement. Whether you're curled up with a warm beverage or lounging in your favorite reading nook, "Scars Like Wings" provides a satisfying escape into a world of romance, representation, and relatable characters.

In conclusion, "Scars Like Wings" is a delightful addition to the queer adult romance genre, with its YA-inspired plot and diverse representation. It's a testament to Chelsey J. Leòn's ability to craft a story that is both entertaining and meaningful for those who seek so desperately to be seen in romance fiction, making it a recommended read for those seeking a blend of fun, sass, and heartfelt romance. Pick it up on September 26th!

This was such a fun journey!
The kind of urban fantasy I adore, where magic seeps into the real world in just the right way.
While it is on the longer side at just over 700 pages, it felt like I was bingeing a cozy anime and I really dig that. Hanging out with Byrdie and her friends and following along as she unravels the mysteries of her past was so enjoyable. I cannot lie, I would give anything to be working in a magical library with three beautiful immortal guardians acting as my aunties 😍

My favourite aspects:
- the fashion & makeup descriptions, I love the attention to detail regarding these and just the sheer girlhood of their getting ready scenes.
- adore that each chapter and part has a title!
- the way that runes and Cleo (the magical version of Alexa) makes the mundane everyday activities magical.
- Guncle Everett. Especially when he said "y'all owe me the tea if you want this coffee".
- the Archive is such a stunning setting, I will never ever dislike a magical library setting. It may be my version of heaven.

Overall I really found this so enjoyable and cannot wait to continue with the next Crystal Dragon duet book- Memories Like Fangs.

Thank you so much to Chelsey J. León for the eARC 🖤

I received this book as an advanced reader from the author herself. This is the first Arc i have ever received, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. It is also the first one I've read with LGBT dynamics.  This book with its amazing world building and characters (Byrd and Quinn.. I absolutely loved them🥰😍),  it had me hooked. I am so thankful to be a part of this ARC team. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Great job to the author Chelsey León!! I can't wait for Book 2!

I received this as an ARC and I absolutely loved it! There is a ton of detail that allows you to picture everything clearly. It was longer than most books I’ve read lately so it did take a bit longer to read but the further I went into the book, the better it got!

I’m ready for a book 2! It ended with so much to think about! I can’t wait to see any updates for a 2nd book!

I was given an ARC copy of this book, and this review will be cross posted. 5 stars is not enough stars for my opinion on this book. This has, by far become my favorite book of the year, hands down.

What can I even say about Byrd to explain just how much I love this character? To see a character who has been given the tools and confidence to just unabashedly love herself is so beautiful. Seeing her still have moments of anxiety, but knowing her worth shows that it's okay to have those moments but to remember the badass you are meant to be.

This book has all my favorite parts of fantasy wrapped in a perfect little bow. Dragons, supernaturals of every kind, and magic galore. But it also has chosen family, representation of every kind, love and laughter, pain and grief, and everything in between. As a fat, brown girl, seeing such representation in fantasy is the best part of the book for me. Seeing the love that these friends have for each other while navigating trying to figure out their lives makes it feel like you're just along for the journey effortlessly.

Without giving away spoilers (because I really truly want everyone to read this book and find it out on their own), Scars Like Wings is a story that unfolds in such a way that you just get caught up in the story. You feel all the chaos and confusion that Byrd feels. You feel the love and instant connection of her and Quinn. You feel the pain and the grief that not only Byrd feels but the pains others are dealing with as well. Byrd has lost so many important people in her life and is now having to remember and navigate those feelings and memories once again while also falling madly in love with Quinn.

This book will be in my thoughts for a very, very long time, and I will (im)patiently be waiting for as many books as this author will bless us with for these characters.

- on the first page, there is on sentence as it just reminder me of what my mum always said to me " we'll always be around to you safe " her words, those memories from not so ago, play on repeat in my head like an old scratched-up cd
- i love how Chelsey quote References like in the book "it was like the moving pictures in Harry Potter, but a moving postcard chronicling her journey"
- this book is so very addictive and i couldn't simply put it down
- i love how there is fated mates along with family mysteries all in one book
- i am loving the story so much also i love Byrd alot as she is sooo sweet and shy
- there is one sentence in this book , it just made me like " dick pics are like waffled " just couldn't stop laughing
- Bryd is quite amazing character as she loves to read monster romance or some dark romance books while she is in the bathtub
- Byrd was reading the book that she found in her uncles bedroom that belongs to her mom . There is one section that just melted my heart where it decribe how Bryd mom (doe) and her father was fated mated and it was love at first sight
- i love Byrd and Quinn relationship so much as they were made for each other .
- but the ending was so sad when Byrd found her mothers head hanging up on the wall in Quinns vacation's home
- i cant wait for book 2 to come out .

Just wow. This was such an amazing romantasy. It honnestly felt like two stories in one, the love story between Byrd an Quinn and Byrds quest to find herself.

The fantasy side draws you into this magical place and keep you questioning the whole time, do you have several hints s to what might happen, yes, but still I stayed up way to late not able to let go.

As for the romance part, I freaking loved it. The relationship was something I need more of. Even with an insta lust/love situation, the relationship was built slowly, trust built, boundaries respected, communication at the fore front. Ho these two had me crushing hard.

Even if we are talking about shifters, I felt a mirror put up to our society when it comes to race. We know the atrocities of our society that saddly enough doesn't seem to evolve as much as I would hope even in 2024. It was heartbreaking at times, but a good reminder of the realities.

On that same train of thought the representation was perfection, with even little comments here and there that clearly shows the writer knows what she is talking about.

Honestly great book. I did know t wasa part one but I'm still mad about how I'm left wanting more, but that just means the author did a good job.

**Disclosure, I was given this book through BookFunnel by the Author, Chelsey J. León in exchange for an honest review**

First off thank you so much to the Author Chelsey J. León for the chance to read this amazingly wonderful book before its release! I cannot wait to buy a hard copy for my book shelf! Now let’s get into this review!!

This book was amazing! The description, the details, the storyline, the plot, and the characters; the pictures that were painted just from the writing alone was wayyy more than anything I’ve read before. I could see the characters and the scenes around them, I could smell Quinn as described, it was like I was in the book with the characters!

I love the way Byrd loves herself, I love her confidence even with her small anxiety’s here and there she owns herself! Byrd’s besties are the definition of best friends, they are they through thick and thin and all have each others backs no matter what!

The library is literally the library of my dreams and wish it was real!

Quinn, don’t get me started on Quinn! I’m in love with her, I wished I could be Byrd and have the relationship with Quinn! The nicknames they have for each other makes me smile more than it should, “starlight” is definitely perfect!

But the ending got me (I called it halfway through the book) I didn’t think it was going to happen and the last sentence Byrd spoke in the final chapter sent me into tears and a small fit of rage!

I cannot wait to see what the next book has in store, how is Quinn going to explain her way out of the ending of this book? I can’t wait to find out!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This is a long book, probably one of the longest I’ve read however it didn’t feel dragged out it felt perfectly paced.

I loved how cosy and wholesome it was in parts, how it showed all types of relationship including serious, poly and friends with benefits.

It was also heartbreaking beautiful with the trauma of the main characters, I loved how it showed even how the most body confident people can have insecurities and have bad days

Also the trigger warnings/ content warnings are so appreciated. And the nostalgia from talking about reader rabbit loved that

“You would have to have some hidden Mickeys tattooed on you or want to visit the park every year. Now, those people are weird.” 👀👀Me looking down at my Mickey semi colon tattoo 😂

Overall it was a great book however even the best books have issues. My only issue was the word ‘gods’ I don’t know why, if it’s because of how many times it’s said or whatever but i just didn’t like it. I am so excited for the second book!

My notes app and the book are crazy with highlights and notes, so I’m going to try my best to put it all together in a cohesive way…

Yall ever read a book that starts off with such a bang and such a hardship you have to put it down for a day? And when you pick it back up you keep saying “just one more chapter”? This is that book.
It’s so well written, the words come to life in your mind. This book could be its own movie. The world building is phenomenal and the feelings that it creates are more so.
I instantly fell in love with the strength that Byrd posses, and the love her and Quinn share. From the awkward meet-cute, to the firework show of a first kiss and beyond, this book is easily at my top 10. Not only is this a Sapphic Romantasy, we get to see how Byrds platonic relationships work, and how much love everyone has for everyone else. (You don’t get to see that often enough in books!). I can’t wait to see what happens in the sequel!

Scars Like Wings has it all: representation of all people, shapes, sizes, colors and sexuality, mental health- which is something a lot of main stream books don’t have and one of the reasons I was so excited to read this book and lucky enough to get an ARC- of age main characters, hidden identities, mystery, etc! Be sure to pre-order or order this book when it drops on Sept. 26! You won’t be disappointed.

This book is absolutely beautiful. The story. The spice. The cliffhanger. Do yourself a favor and pick it up.

Favorite Quote:

"What do you sense from me, then?"
"I sense a girl that has been hurt so many times that as much as you want love you are scared of getting hurt again."
"Read me like a book, why don't you?" I choked on another sob.
"I read you more like a poem, if we are being honest. I want to read you so much that you are ingrained in my soul, and I can recite you from my heart. But I'm not done." Quinn continued when I opened my mouth. " I sense my girl, my sweetness, mi tesoro, my love. I sense someone that I would kill for. If anyone hurt you, Byrd, I would hunt, kidnap, torture, and murder them, even if they just gave you a paper cut. I have never felt this way about anyone before, but I would make that person feel your pain a thousandfold. I would burn the world down if it meant keeping you safe."

What a beautiful book! I absolutely loved it.
The world building was amazing, I found it easy to follow. This book is thick and it definitely captured my attention.

ℑ𝔫 𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔰 𝔪𝔬𝔪𝔢𝔫𝔱, 𝔩𝔢𝔱’𝔰 𝔣𝔦𝔫𝔡 𝔬𝔲𝔯 𝔬𝔨𝔞𝔶.

The characters are absolutely amazing. Byrd and Quinn, ahhhh they had me smiling and blushing so much. Byrd is such a strong character who has been through so much.

"𝐼 𝒹𝑜𝓃'𝓉 𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓃𝓀 𝐼 𝒽𝒶𝓋𝑒 𝑒𝓋𝑒𝓇 𝓈𝑒𝑒𝓃 𝒶𝓃𝓎𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓂𝑜𝓇𝑒 𝒷𝑒𝒶𝓊𝓉𝒾𝒻𝓊𝓁 𝒾𝓃 𝓂𝓎 𝓁𝒾𝒻𝑒."

The writing and representation in this book is just beautiful! I loved reading about the different relationships. The detail is so good, there’s a lot of intense and emotional moments, twists that had me screaming…and there’s dragons! I can’t wait for the next!

If you want a sapphic romance, fantasy, with amazing characters…pick this one up!

A huge thank you to the author for allowing me to read the ARC.

WOW! Holy moly. This book had everything I could ever love about a book. Shifters, magical creatures, LGBTQIA+ rep, plus size rep, mental health rep, romantasy, and a hell of a twist! I loved every bit of this book! Chelsey beautifully captured this world and captivated me throughout this story.

I fell in love with our badass FMC. The way she loves herself and her confidence was unmatched. I wanna be like that! Quinn was *chefs kiss* the love interest of my dreams! 🥵 Byrd was surrounded by an amazing support system and my heart would swell every moment they spent together.

I’m gonna need book 2 immediately!

I was hooked on this book from the very first page. The concept of the entire modern magical world is so brilliant. It was so beautifully refreshing to see a cast of characters built of different races, sexualities and sizes. It’s not often I get to to read something with a plus size FMC like myself and it was perfection. This story was beautiful and the relationships felt so real. I laughed, I cried and I swooned my way through every page.

The last time I was this excited to read a book was when I was in middle school. When I tell you I ran to read this. I’ve never finished a book this fast before. Amazing world building, amazing characters, and a HUGE range of representation…!!! I loved it so much. Words cannot explain how much I loved it. There were some things that made me feel so seen, I had to put the book down because I was genuinely trying not to scream from happiness. Do yourself a favor and read this book!

Romantasy 🌶️🌶️

This is a debut romantasy featuring a sapphic couple. I really enjoyed the world building in this book, it’s so beautifully detailed. I want to go to The Archive Library.

A plus size dragon shifter romance with a stunning cover💜💜💜

This world has witches, shifters, mermaids, fae, vampires, etc.

I love Byrd and Quinn together and can’t wait to read book 2.

Also love all of Byrd’s chosen family. And the throuple in the library.

Finding butch/femme lesbian romance is hard enough, but finding good romance in that genre sometimes feels impossible. There are very few series that I have read that I have enjoyed as much as this book. When I saw how long it was initially I was a little bit concerned, but by the time I got to the last page I was wanting another 500. It's definitely more of a romance novel then erotica, there is some sex but it's not real real graphic or a real huge part of the story. Perhaps in book two. But the world building is beautiful, especially for someone who lives near Atlanta. The relationship between the two main characters blooms in a very natural way, and I just adore Quinn. If I spotted her on the street, I just might be tempted to tackle her and take her home with me. Both characters, and all of their friends and family, are just glowing and real and warm and amazing. I feel like I know these people now, and it hurts my heart a little bit that I don't get to see how the story ends yet. This is one of those books that has the potential to be magic all on its own. I haven't felt this way since I was a little kid, well, in college, and read the first Harry Potter book. Of course, now that I'm an adult and I know what a difficult person wrote those books, it's dimmed the magic a little bit on that series, but this series has all of that magic, and it glows on every single page. I would recommend this to anyone, straight gay lesbian any queer person you can think of it doesn't matter it is just a beautiful love story. The ending? No spoilers, but it is as horrific as the rest of the book is beautiful and I am very very much awaiting the resolution and book two.

When this came through and I saw the trigger warning (Mention of Harry Potter (Followed by how problematic it is)) I was like SOLD! Then I went and bought two preorders. Then I would not stop talking about this book that I had not yet read…then I read it!!!! Wow hue wow! @chelseyjleon built an amazing world with lore that feels real. These characters feel real.

BLURB:
When I was little, Mom would tell it to me like a fairytale, a story that couldn’t be real. Little did I know how real the monsters were. And I’m not talking about the dragons.

When her mother was murdered, Byrd Pierce’s world shattered. She lost so much, so young and she feared she’d never be able to recover. Years later, Byrd had not only picked up the pieces but had also mended them with gold. She has a job at a living magical library, a witch and a mermaid for best friends, and a closet with clothing that not only flatters her plus-size body but also makes her look hot AF.

When Quinn Garcia literally falls head over heels for her, Byrd thinks she’s finally found her “okay” at last. But when Quinn compliments a back tattoo only she can see -one she doesn’t actually have, at that- everything shifts. While trying to research the mysterious tattoo, Byrd finds a book that only she can open, containing one single sentence written in her mother’s handwriting: Are you ready to know the truth, Baby Byrd?

Suddenly, the mysteries surface and threaten to drown Byrd. Nothing from her friends to her past to Quinn is what they have always seemed. The further she dives, however, the more one solitary idea becomes clear: her mother did everything to keep her safe. But at what cost?

Gleeful Goblin Review: This is a captivating ride from start to finish, with lots of twists and turns all along the way. I loved the blend of more high fantasy elements with totally modern/real world elements, especially the author's description of the different styles of dragon! The author has a phenomenal world that's beautifully rendered and I feel really shines with Black Girl Magic from both the author and Byrd: "Everyone had always said that I was the spitting image of Mom. My mudpie brown eyes and light-skin were the only things I got from Pops. Everything else was Mom. Between us, we had the same straight eyebrows, large upturned round eyes, black nose, high cheekbones, and full lips. Our hair was full of the same tight kinky ringlet curls. We were the same height and had the same curvy build. Our voices were even similar. Mom always said that was how the women were on her side of the family. Maybe there were a few differences, like the eye color or the hair color or some freckles, but you could always tell that they were Pierce women—our bloodline so strong, men took our last name instead of the other way around. I always loved when people said we were just alike. To me, that meant I was going to be like Mom. I would have her grace, her strength, her power. I would become a dragon like her. She was perfect in every way, and I wanted that for myself."

The way that this story gradually unfolds and deals with topics like grief/loss was really beautifully done in my opinion. I found it really easy to lose track of time while reading and be immersed in the story which, to me, is always a great sign. 5/5 Stars

I read a lot, especially arcs, and I love reading an author's first book.
The excitement is huge and i hope for something unexpectedly wonderful.
In this case, an absolute hit!
It's a fantasy, shapeshifter novel, mystical and adventurous.
With a lot of warnings at the beginning of the book, which I thought were important because they can be triggering.
Nonetheless, it has fantastic world building and extremely cute and hot (AF) characters.
I'm a little bit in love with Quinn and Quinn’s and Byrd's relationship!
It's so beautiful, funny, quirky and hot!!
Although that comes later in the book...
The story and characters are very diverse, there was a little bit of every kind of relationship.
There are fairies, dragons, gargoyles and lots of other magical creatures!
It was captivating, mysterious and sometimes just cute and cozy! Perfect for you if you like nerdy characters, protective characters with lots of great, cool and funny friends and family!
Oh, there's a cliffhanger so we're eagerly awaiting part two!!
Thank so much to the Author for this ARC!

If you’re looking for a gritty yet sweet story to immerse yourself in to escape the daily drudgery, is the story for you.

Characters in this book come together in their found family, various traumas, queer joy, and an overall sense of unapologetic pride for one’s own being. With a good splash of supernatural and magical creatures, representation in bulk (yay fellow demisexuals and ADHDers), secrets to be unearthed, and a sentient library I didn’t want the book to end.

Speaking of the ending… The cliffhanger will require some people to call to work for a mental health day.

📚 Overall this book was a cosy, emotional, exciting and funny read that has me awaiting the second book with great anticipation.
