Sweet River Ranch #4

A Marriage Pact for the Cowboy

Rate this book
She’s stuck in the past. Can she embrace the future he offers?
Maxwell Sullivan has been too busy to revisit his Kansas hometown until his 10-year reunion, when he discovers the girl he liked as a young teen has died. His classmates are married with families — has Maxwell’s focus been off? The only other single seems to be his former crush’s shy twin sister.

Eryn Ralston and her dad are about to lose the family farm due to medical debt. Amelia had been the popular one, but Eryn can’t help but appreciate Maxwell’s condolences. Still, his attentiveness at the reunion events is likely only because everyone else was already paired off.

But when Maxwell offers her father a job at Sweet River Ranch in Montana, Eryn won’t be left behind, not even after she discovers Amelia’s obsession with Maxwell through her journal entries. How can Eryn stop living in her twin’s shadow and bravely go for the future — and the cowboy — she wants?

Loved Eryn and Maxwell's story!! Eryn grew up in her twin sister's shadow. Maxwell hasn't been home to Gilead since he left, and the only reason he's here now is for his ten-year high school reunion. When he finds out that the girl he had a crush on is now deceased, he offers his condolences to her twin sister, Eryn. Maxwell is drawn to Eryn, and enjoys more of the reunion events with Eryn. When Maxwell offers Eryn's father a job at the Sullivan Resort in Montana, Eryn isn't sure what to think. She's not used to anyone wanting to get to know her for her, or for anyone to see her as worthy of love. The more time they spend together, the more they fall for each other, though Eryn is waiting for the other shoe to drop and for Maxwell to walk away. Maxwell isn't sure he's not like his father, and he doesn't think he's worthy of Eryn. He knows Eryn needs help with her self-esteem, and devices a plan to help. When they both learn to listen to God and what He has to say about them, things really start to change for the better, and as Maxwell helps Eryn to see that she is worthy and he sees her for who she is, both of them enjoy their growing dependence on God and learning that He's always there for them, no matter what.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, was not required to leave a review, and the opinion expressed is my own.

This book was nothing like what I expected from the title, but I enjoyed it nonetheless! While Eryn's negative self-image was painful to read about, it made her transformation very impactful and memorable. I didn't particularly identify with either of the main characters' personalities, so this was a good book for me to learn about how other people think and to grow more compassion for others! I found the subplots of this book particularly rich, and I love the community at Sweet River Ranch! One of my favorite parts of this book was how much Paisley and Weston have grown since their book and seeing them reaching out to others with the things they have learned in their walks with the Lord and with each other. I also really enjoyed the character of Eryn's father - I thought he added a lot to this story!

A Marriage Pact for the cowboy is a sweet Christian romance with a good faith message. The heroine is kind of stuck in the past and can't get over hurts and it causes her to be insecure and feel insignificant. The hero is used to having life handed to him on a silver platter and he doesn't understand exactly where she's coming from. I enjoyed it as she found her footing and learned how to interact with people on her own and how he softened. This is totally worth the read and I recommend it. I was given a copy free and all opinions are my own.

Couldn't put this book down!

I'm always delighted to find a Valerie Comer book on my Kindle when there's a new release! Her stories are always riveting, relatable, uplifting, and enjoyable, and this book was no exception. It kept me up past midnight two nights in a row. I loved how Maxwell helped Eryn grow in confidence after living in her sister's shadow, and how Maxwell learned to be patient and not steamroll others into what he wanted. Loved the happy ending and the unexpected celebration ;)

I can't wait for Bryce's story next.

This is the fourth book in Comer’s Sweet River Ranch romances. I really enjoyed it. It helps to have read the earlier books, because they give the back stories on many of the characters you’ll meet in this book. The characters are great, and there are good insights on who or what determines our worth, priorities, and following through on commitments. I’m already looking forward to the next book.

Maxwell and Eryn have siblings that rub them up the wrong way and who have given them distorted views of themselves. It’s only by reaffirming who they are in Christ that they find the confidence to overcome their insecurities and to become confident in their own relationship. This is the fourth book in the Sweet Water Ranch series, and may be the best so far. It can be read as a stand alone but it’s helpful to have read the earlier books.

Good As Always

I love Valerie Comer's cowboy books...it's always so fun to get to know characters in a new way - and to revisit old friends. I'm loving the Sullivan cousins and the ladies they fall in love with. I'm hoping to see redemption in the Dad and Uncle too - not sure if that is on the books or not.

Eryn had her own issues she needed to work through. How often do we see ourselves through other's eyes and not God's eyes?

a new identity for her

I could relate to being in her sister’s shadow. It’s only when we choose to put God above that and seek Him first that we can move beyond the past. Well done!

A Marriage Pact for the Cowboy pact made me cry! Valerie gets right to the heart of insecurity and the comparison trap in this unusual take on the marriage pact trope.

I’m such a fan of Valerie Comer and I had no doubt I would love this book as I’ve loved the others in this series. It did not disappoint! Once again, the characters are rich and developed and struggle with things things that are relevant. Eryn lives in the shadow of her now deceased sister. She’s always live there. And she struggles with how to break free and be herself… To accept herself as she is… And see that she has worth and value.
