Ellie and the Good-Luck Pig

Rate this book
The Critter Club cares for a precocious pig that might just be giving Ellie good luck in the tenth book of the Critter Club series.

When The Critter Club takes in an abandoned pig named Plum, the girls are really excited. They’ve never had a pig at the club before! They love learning how to take care of Plum. And they especially love watching Ms. Sullivan’s dog, Rufus, interact with the pig. But no one is happier about the club’s guest than Ellie.

Soon after Plum arrives, Ellie starts having some unusually good luck. She does really well on a test for her least favorite subject; she aces an audition for a play at a local theater; and she wins a prize at school! Ellie is sure that Plum is bringing her good luck. So when the rest of the girls tell Ellie that they’ve found someone to adopt the pig, Ellie knows she should be excited...but she’s not. Will Ellie’s good luck turn bad once Plum leaves?

With easy-to-read language and illustrations on almost every page, The Critter Club chapter books are perfect for beginning readers!

The Critter Club books keep popping up on recommended early chapter book lists and this is the first one we tried. Both my four-year-old and seven-year-old enjoyed it and asked for more in the series. I didn't find anything to complain about, other than that there was nothing particularly outstanding about the writing style, illustrations or character development, IMO. But, it was cute enough and I appreciate the focus on giving animals a safe sanctuary and helping them find forever homes. I happen to love pigs so I enjoyed this storyline went beyond the typical cat or dog. I was worried that some of these books might be a little hard for children who are sensitive to animals in peril, but this one was very gentle with no strife on the animal's part.

Ellie and the gang get a pig at the critter club. Ellie is convinced the pig is giving her good luck so shes nervous when the pig finds a home. She starts having bad luck, but then she realizes its not luck, its just a coincidence!

Summary: Ellie and her friends have a club in Ms. Sullivan’s barn. They take care of animals until they can be placed in other homes. This story is about Ellie’s attachment to a little pig named Plum. Ellie is convinced that Plum is bringing her good luck. And when Plum goes away to live on a farm and Ellie’s luck changes, she is even more convinced until her friends help her realize that her ‘luck’ was really her own doing.

This new series is bringing lots of smiles to our students. They’re enjoying the four likable, diverse characters and plenty of cute animals. Barkley’s writing is clear and engaging. In this newest installment, Ellie loves Plum, the new pig that the Critter Club is taking care of temporarily, and she’s sure it’s bringing her all sorts of good luck. But when they find a new home for Plum, what will happen to her good luck?

Appropriate for: all ages!

My 4 year old daughter loves Critter Club and so do I. We both love that there are so many pictures. This book dealt with good luck/bad luck, which my daughter has no concept of, but at least now she's heard of it. I though Plum the pig was very cute and I'm glad they're featuring non-traditional pets.
