Dr. Low had an unrecognized genius that took many many broken and suffering mentally ill patients and gave them the ability to become productive and live "normal" lives. The techniques he taught those patients are still valid and useful to anyone who desires peace in their own life. I highly recommend this book and others by Dr. Abraham Low. He is the true pioneer of cognitive behavior training.
In Recovery we say that any act of self control leads to a sense of self respect. Well, I respect myself a whole lot for finally finishing this book. I love Dr. Low and the methods he created and I love this book but it isn't an easy read. During the time Dr. Low wrote the book his language and diction might have seemed quite natural and conversational but by today's standards it can be somewhat stifled and intellectual. All that not withstanding, this book is a treasure for anyone who suffers from a psychological diagnosis or who has not been diagnosed but suffers from anxiety, lack of self esteem, or uncontrolled anger. I stand firm in my opinion that Dr. Low was ahead of his time and recognized truths--largely intuitively--that current psychology is only beginning to understand.
This is like the AA's Big Book, only it focuses on how people with anxiety, depression and similar issues learn to overcome their problems, not by saying "I have a brain disease and I can't help myself," but by living their lives differently with a good support system in place. This book is the cornerstone of the Low Institute, the Relatives Project, and Recovery, Inc.
2.5 Somewhat simplistic, but overall a positive and helpful self-help book for practical, everyday thinking--thinking that empowers the individual. I look at it as offering mottos to life, such as not being afraid to make mistakes--embrace them!, but generally the book had an edge of annoying. I found Low paradoxically empathic and open-minded sometimes; other times, generalizing and dismissive of the individual.
Pastor recommended. Shows a cognitive method of mental health keeps an internal peace in the midst of fears, anxiety and anger. Dr Low much of the stress in our lives is making big things which are in fact trivial.
My sister loaned me her copy of this book long ago and made me practice this when my panic disorder was at its peak. It didn't help much but was better than nothing. I believe I had MAST Cell activation syndrome. I just found a group for this on Facebook! Doctors were TOO DUMB to figure out what was going on with me. It is amazing. The group is far more helpful than any doctor! Incredible to think about.
If you are suffering this can help a little. "Scary but not dangerous" ....ha, ha, ha!
This book is life-changing. It can be difficult to read due to outdated examples and thorough explanations which at times can be difficult to follow, but the underlying theory that you can control thoughts and impulses, but not feelings and sensations is useful to deal with irritations of daily life. Once you understand and can master some basic Recovery International terms, you can use them to deal with anxiety, fear, temper, and other daily discomforts by spotting inconsistencies and fallacies of your thoughts and impulses.
The cognitive behavioural training and system of self help through peer support created by Dr. Low has stood the test of time for over 85 years. This book is my bible. The peer support network is still going strong at www.recoveryinternational.org
The language is a bit clunky but then, this book is actually from the 1930s when Dr. Low was alive and a practicing psychiatrist. It's part of an organization called Recovery International that works to help people gain control of automatic negative thoughts and the resulting emotions and reactions.
