North on Drummond

Rate this book
Sandy Bottom Bay, Florida--Come for the Haunts, Stay for the Beaches!

Drew Drummond might call himself a psychic tarot reader, but he doesn’t believe in the supernatural. The business was left to him by his grandmother, and seemed the best way to rise above the chronic criminal behavior of the Drummond family. Despite his efforts, few of the townspeople consider him a good romantic match. Being gay only makes finding love more difficult.

When Cliff Garcia, Drew’s teenaged crush, moves back to town and joins the police force, Drew doesn’t think he has a chance. After all, the skeptical cop considers Drew’s profession on par with professional conmen, and Cliff had spent his entire school career feuding with Drew’s volatile brothers. Despite the obstacles, Drew and Cliff begin a fiery relationship.

Just when Drew starts to believe they might have a chance, he suffers a head injury and begins having visions of the future. If Drew tells Cliff the truth, he’ll lose the man he’s falling for, but keeping his new ability a secret is no longer an option. If he can’t convince Cliff he’s for real, a murderer will walk free.

North on Drummond by K C Burn
Contemporary M - M romance with a bit of suspense and mystery.
Cliff moves to his home town of Sandy Bottom Bay, FL to work on the police force. He doesn’t believe in ghosts or psychics even though the town is supposedly the most haunted in Florida. Drew doesn’t consider himself a psychic either but he does earn a living reading tarot cards for his long-time inherited clients. Drew had a crush on Cliff back in high school. If only he had the nerve to peruse that feeling.
Cliff and Drew dance around their feelings a little but soon start a relationship that has them both falling quickly and deeply for each other. Until Drew experiences psychic visions and mist tell Cliff to catch a murderer.

Cliff is a little fast to explode and go off the handle. But he does apologize quite nicely and surprisingly for a cop, wears his heart on his sleeve.
I really liked Cliff’s police partner. He’s considerate and smart and friendly. I’d like to know more about him. And Cliff’s mother, Helen, seems like she knows lots of town secrets.
The romance between Cliff and Drew was quick and poignant.

I didn’t realize until I just typed the title here that it’s a total pun. (On their names.)

🎧 I alternated between an ebook copy and the audiobook. The performance by Darcy Stark was well done with specific voice differences for the characters. The emotions came through clearly and with impact. I listened to this at 1.4 for best conversation speed.

La premisa me atrajo pero, aunque no ha estado mal, tampoco tiene nada que lo haga especialmente interesante, una lectura sin más, y por cierto, no me creo estar diciendo esto, pero hay escenas de sexo para aburrir, literalmente.

Drew Drummond might make a living reading tarot cards and divining futures, but he’s not exactly a big believer in the supernatural. But being psychic-for-sale is probably the most honest thing anyone in his family has ever done, and Drew intends on staying on the right side of the law. Especially when ‘the law’ is Cliff Garcia, who he has been mooning over since high school.

Cliff moved back to Florida for a lot of reasons: a break-up, his best friend dying, his mother’s insane belief in the supernatural. But when he sees the fiery red-head walking out of the food store, Cliff has to admit that moving back might have also finally given him the chance to have a relationship not tied up in closets. Too bad Drew is a Drummond, and Cliff knows all about how Drummond = Bad News. But when an accident lands Drew practically right into Cliff’s arms, and a little maneuvering lands Cliff right into Drew’s house, the two men can’t really deny what is going on between them.

Which would be all fine and dandy except Cliff’s ex is making a nuisance of himself, Drew’s family is courting assault charges, and Drew’s psychic power seems to not have gotten the memo that it is supposed to be fake. Oh, and a murderer may or may not be walking around Sandy Bottom Bay. So…who knew small-town life would be so exciting?

This was such a fun story. Seriously, I was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, but almost right from the beginning I was sucked into this book. I will say, though, that if I hadn’t already come to the conclusion that Florida weather would kill me, this book would do an awesome job of nailing that coffin shut. California might not be heaven, but I’m pretty sure Florida could make a good case for hell.

There honestly was not a whole lot about this book that I didn’t like. The pacing was well done, the characters (both MC and secondary) were interesting and well rounded, and the paranormal aspects kinda blended into the background-–so that they didn’t take over the story, but instead made it more interesting.

I don’t know a whole lot about Florida, but I have grown up in a succession of small(ish) towns, and there was a lot about Sandy Bottom Bay that I recognized. Though, I don’t think there were a lot of ghost stories floating around my home-town (there was an orchard that no one walked thru after dark, but that was more because the owner was an asshole, and not because of any spectral complaints). The author did do an awesome job of selling this town…and the weather. *shudders* For all that I know nothing of this place, I had no problem imagining it, and its people. I was comfortable there, but it was interesting enough that I always wanted to know just a little bit more.

The paranormal/mystery aspects really doesn’t come into play till later in the story, but I liked how they were worked into it. The solution was fairly obvious, though, so if you are looking for a story that is mainly about the ‘who done it’ I would say that you might find this book a bit light for your tastes. I was really in the mood for something like this, so it was great to find a nice romance, with good characters, and just a hint of supernatural mystery to make it unique.

Cliff’s ex is a major tosser, though. Kinda wouldn’t have minded if the gator had gnawed on him a bit. Not killed…but nibbled enough by the local wildlife that it would deflate his ego a bit.

All in all, a really good book. Totally reccomend you read it.

I liked this. It was an enjoyable easy read but not crazy short or with so many sex scenes I had to skim read them after a bit. I guessed the bad guy - not sure if it was a fluke or just easy, since I'm not normally good at figuring out the baddies in crime types. I didn't guess his motivation though.

Cliff. . . was a bit of a judgemental douche. He did make up for it, but it certainly struck me throughout the first 70% that I just wanted to slap him upside the head at times. Drew was delightful and I want to cuddle him and his best friend Kyle (and yes I do want that taboo sequel for Kyle)!
Basically I just felt comfy reading this - I want to read more, I want everyone in it to turn gay and get boyfriends so I can read their stories. . . . maybe even creepazoid Brett could redeem himself and have a HEA, and Eddie the bi-guy too. And I want Cliff's mum to meet someone too. The writing atmosphere was sweaty and not just because of the hot sex; my idea of Florida now consists entirely of damp humid hotness thanks to K.C. Burn!

I'm just hoping there really will be a sequel (if not two or three!) and soon.

Sometimes...girls just wanna' have fun...

I've has this one in my audio library for ages and when I was looking for my next listen to see what was going to strike my fancy, I checked out the blurb for this one and it just sounded like fun...lots and lots of fun!

I was right this one was fun. Not in the stand-up comedy way, but in the lots of stuff going on and with a bit of humor and a small dose of irony added at times. 'North on Drummond' was a story that had a few twist and turns. While Drew Drummond earns a living as a psychic tarot card reader...he doesn't really believe in any of it. But a guys got to support himself right?

Drew comes from a family with a less than stellar reputation but he's determined to be possibly the first honest and legitimate person in his family. He doesn't want to walk on hte wrong side of the law because the man who has captured his attention and his heart wears a badge and even though he left town years ago...Drew knows he's coming back and no it's not because he's psychic...but you have to read the story to find out why he knows.

When Cliff Garcia left town he had no intentions of ever looking back much less returning. Even though his mother still lives there but time and circumstances have taught him the hard way...never, say never. Cliff's back and a member of the local law enforcement.

One of the first things that Cliff sees when he returns to Sandy Bottom Bay is the sexiest ginger he's ever seen...now if he could just find out who he is and get to know him better. This all sounds good to him until he discovers that his sexy ginger is not only a Drummond but a psychic a word that Cliff sees as being synonymous with words like charlatan, con artist, grifter and on and on...but still...he's drawn to Drew and as circumstances keep drawing them together, Cliff realizes that his attraction to Drew is much stronger than his dislike of Drew's family or his career choice.

Drew and Cliff's story is played out against a series of day to day events some a little more unusual than others and as the story unfolds many of the events turn out to be connected to 'the bigger picture'. Amidst all the daily happenings in Sandy Bottom Bay the reader is introduced to a varied and interesting collection of characters some are locals...like Drew's brothers and his best friend Kyle, or Cliff's mom and his good friend Scott, who turns out to also be a member of the Sandy Bottom Bay Police Department. There's also Drew's slightly shady brothers as opposed to his totally shady father (dad's doing time). Then there are the visitors to the mystic town of Sandy Bottom Bay...like Cliff's ex who claims it a work thing but as the story progresses it becomes clear that there's more to his story than meets the eye

I really loved how this story played out so many of the characters were more than a little entertaining I loved Kyle and I think a story about him getting together with his secret crush(es) would be every bit as entertaining as this one and then there was Cliff's mom...Mom was EPIC!!! She's the town matriarch and when momma's not happy trust me ain't no one going to be happy!!! But this was all in the coolest ways possible. Cliff's friend and co-worker Scott was another character whom I really liked and then there was Cliff's ex...yeah, he can just drop off the face of the earth.

I also like how the paranormal elements were introduced into the story and not just there and in our face from the word go and that's all I'm saying about this other than to add that the author did an awesome job of sliding this into events and making it seem far more believable for how they did this.

This is my fourth audio book narrated by Darcy Stark and so far I've enjoyed his narrations. Adding both expression and depth to the stories and giving me uniquely individual voices for each character. Darcy Stark is quickly becoming one of 'no worries here' narrators because I know when I see his name beside an audio book I just need to wonder if I'll like the story...the audio's not in question.

A nice and sweet story. Very pleasant main characters, especially Drew - or I'm still obsessed with redheads :) I liked the first half (the compicated set-up for the characters to get together) better than the second half. There was very little conflict, the plot was predictable - but nice. I wish the paranormal element were stronger but there were a couple moments that touched me in the right way. Also, a very good cast of secondary characters! Drew's brothers, Drew's friend, Cliff's mom, Cliff's friend - all were memorable and easy to like. Even Cliff's ex - well, he was memorable at least.
All in all, a nice book with nothing objectionable about it.

As much as I found Drew to be adorable, I really struggled with this one. I thought the story had too many things going on but never really fully explored. Drew's sudden 'seeing the future' ability was just nice addition but that was it.

And how about Helen's asking about whether the ghosts at her place being more restless than ever? That sounded like an interesting plot-bait. And the murder seemed to happen out of nowhere.

Didn't satisfy me at all. The additional 0.5* is for Drew.

I really enjoyed this book even though Cliff is an asshat most of the story line. Too much macho and temper for 1 person. Drew is a true sweetheart with fiery red hair. Add in 2 slightly crooked over protective brothers who despise Cliff and the fun starts is Floridas most haunted city.

Audiobook review

Psychics is a bit like brain candy for me. I love a good mystery where a psychic is involved trying to solve a crime that's been committed - or prevent one from happening. So when I noticed this book being released I just had to listen to it right away.

Drew Drummond is psychic. Okay, so he's not really psychic, but he did inherit a psychic gift shop from his beloved grandmother. A grandmother who also did tarot readings for those who wanted one. In order to make ends (barely) meet he's reluctantly taken up his grandmother's turban and gives readings to tourists and the locals in the town. Even though he might just be the biggest sceptic in town.

Cliff Garcia recently returned back to his hometown. Wanting to start over and escape his ex and their messy breakup and his best friend dying, he jumped at a chance when he was offered a position at the police department in Sandy Bottom Bay in Florida. He is less than thrilled when his first assignment is to babysit a celebrity who's come to town to make a TV show. A celebrity who happens to be his cheating ex-boyfriend. To say that he was pissed off is putting it mildly. And starting a relationship with Drew Drummond is not in his agenda. I mean everyone in town knows that the entire Drummond family is nothing but crooks that sooner or later ends up in jail. Now if only his heart would get on that program...

North on Drummond was a slow paced book, mainly dealing with everyday stuff, like Cliff dealing with moving back to his hometown filled with childhood memories, friends and old foes. It doesn't take long for old grudges between him and the Drummond twins to ignite add in his trouble making ex and things are bound to get explode. Only when it does, it's Drew that gets in the way and ends up in hospital with a head injury... and what seems to be real psychic powers. He's getting visions of things to come and things happened in the past - namely a murder not that long ago. Now he just have to get people to believe him before it's too late.

I like this book well enough. At times it was a bit too slow paced for me, we'd gone though a good chunk of the book before something really started happening and the paranormal aspect was in play. I liked Drew and Cliff together as such, they fit well as a couple even if they both were a bit reluctant at times. I really liked some of the secondary characters, in particular Drew's best friend Kyle. They added another layer to the story and made it more enjoyable to read.

I've listened to many new to me narrators and Darcy Stark is one of them. I liked his narration if the book, it wasn't flawless by any means and I would have liked a bit more feelings to the words to truly draw me in. That being said, Stark has a nice voice to listen to and I will happily listen to him some more in the future.

North on Drummondwas a low-angst and straight forward book. It's uncomplicated and is just the right kind of read when you're not looking for something heavy. Recommended.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Northcliff Garcia is returning home after being away for the last eight years. He left the small town of Sandy Bottom Bay for California where he felt he would be finally be free to be himself. Knowing from an early age, he felt compelled to keep his secret to himself and the only way to be who he truly was, was to leave.

Little did he know, he found himself only leading half a life in California. Once again, he felt that in order to keep his job as police officer, he felt he had to keep his sexual orientation private. It was hard being a police officer when he couldn't trust himself enough to tell his fellow officers he was gay.

After a bad breakup, Cliff is heading home, where once again he is hiding. Not the fact that he is gay, but from his mother. Moving across country to the same small town he grew up, Cliff can't find the wherewithall to tell his mother he's back.

Drew Drummond is one of those Drummonds. His family has a reputation for being on the wrong side of the law. Drew's grandmother did her best to give Drew the opportunities to stay straight and with a little help from his ne'er-do-well brothers, he is surviving well enough. His business as a pychic medium is holding its own - barely - and his new internet store is finally starting to take off. Drew knows that only with this grandmother's firm belief in him, he would have been led down the same path that his brothers traveled.

Out of all of the small minded people in this town, his brothers stand up for him and do their best to make sure their little brother is not singled out for being gay.

When a chance meeting with his high crush (who had no idea he existed) brings Drew and Cliff together, sparks fly and Drew thinks he may just have a chance at happiness. Until he learns that Cliff has little tolerance for the supernatural, which is unfortunate when the town of Sandy Bottom Bay is known for this paranormal activity.

A sweet romance between two people who appear to have it all, but the insecurities they face are real. With the help the other, can they find their way to a happily ever after?

It was nice to read a gay theme book with a lot more suspense and story line behind it then just big dicks downright borderline pornography in it.

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

I have had the audiobook of North on Drummond since December 2020. I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews about it but I’d also heard that there was another book in this world coming so I put off listening to it. Now that West on Grainger is out in ebook I couldn’t wait to listen to North on Drummond. This is another one of those “why did I wait so long” moments…

The audiobook is wonderful. The story is fantastic and Darcy Stark’s performance of the story was perfect. I’ve enjoyed his voice many times but it’s been a little while since I listened to one of his audiobooks. I loved all of the different voices he did in this story. There are many male audiobook performers that do fantastic female voices and Darcy Stark is one of them.

There’s a paranormal element to this story and I loved how it was done. Cliff Garcia hates everything about the woo-woo psychic stuff; he doesn’t believe in it. Imagine his surprise when he falls for Drew Drummond who does tarot card readings for a living. When Drew suffers a head injury that brings on a surprising ability it might be the final straw that breaks their budding relationship.

I started listening to this audiobook late in the evening and I didn’t stop until I finished it early the next morning. I loved all of the different relationships in this story. Drew and Cliff, Cliff and his mother, Cliff and his partner on the police force, Drew and his brothers, and Cliff and Drew’s brothers – some of these are pretty complicated relationships and it made for a very compelling story. I was very happy to learn that Drew’s best friend Kyle will be one of the MC’s in West on Grainger.

I loved this! Don't get me wrong, you kinda see every step coming. well except one, but that is hush hush. no spoilers. but it was like watching someone sew a quilt together, everything came together all nice and cozy. My favorite part really has nothing to do with the plot, but it's the eveolution of Drew's brothers. And i really want a sequal with Cliff's mom and her happy ending. Like, really bad.

Drew Drummond is the white sheep in a family of black sheep. Drew inherited his place of business from his grandmother, who was determined to help Drew stay on the right side of the law, unlike most of the rest of his family. Drew is a psychic tarot reader in a town known for its paranormal activity. Drew's business fits right in with the town's theme, but the difference is, Drew considers himself an entertainer not a fortune teller, and never cheats anyone out of anything, eking out a frugal living while trying to survive. When his high school crush, Cliff Garcia, moves back into town, Drew doesn't know whether to be happy or embarrassed, and he certainly doesn't expect to end up with Cliff staying at his house.

When Cliff Garcia moves back to his small town home of Sandy Bottom Bay, he hopes to put the events of his recent past behind him, i.e., his bad breakup with his ex-boyfriend, and the death of his best friend, Jeff. It's a bit of a culture shock moving from the big city back to a place where everyone knows his name and his business, whether he wants them to or not, but Cliff is willing to give it a try. Things start looking up when he spies a gorgeous red-haired man (Drew) at the grocery store who unfortunately gets away before Cliff can catch up with him. Cliff hasn't told anyone he's coming back, not even his mother, who is quite rich and influential in Sandy Bottom Bay. She's also very much into the paranormal scene, which Cliff hates. He doesn't believe in all that nonsense and isn't afraid to admit it.

Drew is one of the nicest guys ever. He's generous, compassionate, passionate, and loving. When Cliff first spots him, he's doing a good deed, helping a lady putting her groceries in her car while almost forgetting that he laid his on top of her car. When Drew gets a concussion from a fight instigated by his brothers, Cliff is the officer on scene. Since he can't be left alone, his best friend, Kyle, conveniently arranges to be away so Cliff ends up staying with Drew, which, in spite of his protests, is what Drew wants. Cliff stays with the intention of leaving when Drew is better, but, predictably, their attraction smolders, then burns, and he ends up being there a lot longer than he thought. All is not smooth in their relationship though. For one thing, Cliff has a real problem with Drew's occupation and even when Drew tries to explain, Cliff doesn't buy it. He has a bad temper and doesn't always think straight when he's angry, often imagining the worst case scenario in any given situation. It also doesn't help when Drew begins to have real psychic visions. Drew is shocked and dismayed, but when certain circumstances occur, it becomes imperative that Cliff believe what he has experienced; Drew also knows that it will be no easy feat getting Cliff to accept his message as fact.

This suspenseful mystery is well-blended with trials, tribulations, and passions between Drew and Cliff. The story is engaging and moves along at a good clip. KC's characters are strong and believable and I loved the character growth, particularly for Cliff. Kyle is another character who quickly won my heart. The affection and concern between him and Drew is admirable and sweet. We should all have a friend as devoted as Kyle. I would really like to see another story in this series giving Kyle his own love, perhaps even the young gay man mentioned briefly in this story. I'd also love to see Drew keep his visions and for him and Cliff to have more psychic adventures in the future. If you enjoy stories with small towns, hot men, psychic phenomena, mystery, suspense, and new beginnings, you will probably like this book. Thanks, KC, for the entertaining story. I truly enjoyed it.

I did not want to put this book down! It pulls you in from the first page. Cliff moves back to his hometown. He has to deal with his ex-boyfriend who is in town for his show. Added bonus his job is to basically babysit him while he's in town. Cliff has been Drew's crush since high school. Their relationship moves fast, but it works in this book.

I loved every part of the is book. It has suspense, family situations, murder. I listened to the audiobook. The narrator was amazing. I was sad when I finished the book. I wanted more Cliff and Drew!

Drew Drummond makes his living as a psychic tarot reader. He is not sure he actually believes but his grandmother left him the business and it keeps him from following the same law breaking path as his brothers. When his high school crush, Cliff Garcia, moves back to town as a member of the police force, Drew figures he has no chance of romance with him. In spite of all that, the two do find romance but then Drew hits his head and begins to have real visions of the future. He knows he can’t tell Cliff as Cliff considers that would be acting the con man. But Drew know he must do something to prevent any murders to happen.

North on Drummond is an intriguing story. Our past often directs our future and Cliff hated everything paranormal and refused to believe in it. Drew on the other hand refused to allow his brother’s chronic criminal behavior shape him. Somehow these two managed to hook up and were trying to have a loving relationship. Both, though, had to adjust and make changes. Love does that and they met each other in between. Travel North on Drummond and see how these two work out their differences. You will be glad you did.

This book had a lot of promise, and there were things I definitely liked about it. But the story fell apart a bit for me in the latter part, and I found some plot points a bit dissatisfying. Ultimately, I liked it, but I definitely had some issues.

Where this book really shined was twofold. The writing was fantastic and the pacing was really good. The story moved along at the perfect pace, neither rushed nor overwritten, and I had no trouble following along. Burn certainly has talent, and it’s one of the things I enjoy most about this author’s style. I was drawn into the story and captivated by the words. The characters, as well, were incredibly well-drawn and real feeling. Even beyond the two MCs, the secondary characters were each unique and had their own flavor. This part really worked for me.

I liked this story. I was a good listen. I enjoyed the characters in the story and how they interacted. The protagonists, Drew and Cliff, were too much in their heads, which was annoying at times. Have they never heard the adage, ASSUME. Though I hoped for a HEA for the pair, I wanted to smack Cliff upside the head on numerous occasions. Though in hindsight, they may have been the intent from the author. The story was pretty good but I would like to have had a bit more paranormal activity. The ending, though sweet, downplayed the paranormal part of the story, which was a bit disappointing. Either way...an enjoyable story.

This was a very nice read. It had it all....
MC that you just love, little bit of suspense, hot sex (but not overdone) and supporting characters that I want to see have their own story told. It even has the crazy and conniving ex that you love to hate. I found this book to be a very nice and relaxing read. The author did a wonder job making the story move along so smoothly. I enjoyed the paranormal aspect of this story because it's not overdone. My favorite supporting characters were Kyle and Cliff's mom. Kyle was smart, sweet and a bit fearless I imagine if he had his own story. Cliff's mom was the perfect gentility southern lady. She comes across in the beginning as ditsy rich southern woman. That changes in the end. All around a great read well worth the cost. A book I will be reading again for sure.

Just when you think Cliff's blinders to the possibilities of the existence of the paranormal were ruling his life, in walks Drew Drummond and suddenly everything is turned upside down. Watching Cliff's inner belief system on the paranormal is heartbreaking at times but it is just one of those things he has to work out for himself. Luckily he has found an old friend as his new partner on the force and a very interesting psychic as his new lover. A great all around read that has mystery, romance, paranormal elements, and a huge cast of intriguing characters that captured my heart from beginning to end.

I enjoyed this book, the strong point was definitely the characters: the super cute Drew who triggers my mothering instincts, and the short-tempered Cliff who's had enough of assholes and idiots.
The mystery part was nicely written, if not surprising. I guessed most of it quickly but it remained entertaining.

I guess I was mostly mad about one thing: Kyle not getting his happy ending with his crush... I WOULD HAVE PAYED GOLD TO READ THAT ONE!!!!! So much potential for character development with the twins!!! I'm so mad! So sad! EXTREMELY SMAD!!!

Oh well, I still liked the story we got so I won't complain too much ...

I really liked it

I had been skirting around the book for awhile trying to decide it i wanted to read it or not. Well I am so glad I took the chance and bought the book. Wonderfully entertaining and great characters all around, not just the main characters. Definitely worth buying and reading.

I liked this one, North is a very likable person with a stalkerish Ex and Drew was cute, with his longterm crush. I even liked Drews brothers since they cared so much for their Drew and Kyle. Hopefully there will be a book about Kyle as well.
