Sunstone #2

Sunstone, Vol. 2

«Don't overthink it.»
Ally and Lisa are your typical couple - they play videogames, go on dates, and indulge in extreme BDSM sex while awkwardly avoiding discussing their deeper feeling and desires. Okay, maybe the last bit isn't so typical. Regardless, as the two move further away from the realm of friendship and deeper into the intoxicating world of S&M, the bonds between them grow even tighter, but a secret from Ally's past threatens to tear them further apart.

At the heat of every relationship lies unspoken truths, but for Ally and Lisa, the lines between love and lust, friendship and heartache, constantly blur. In a romance defined by power, telling the truth can be just as risky as keeping secrets.

Equal parts funny, sexy, and heart-wrenching, Sunstone Vol. 2 continues Stjepan Šejić's creator-owned smash hit.

Vol. 1: ★★★★★

Sunstone is a lesbian BDSM love story. If that's not your cup of tea, nothing I can say in this review will sway you to pick this amazing graphic novel series up. Luckily for me, this is very much my cup of tea and Sunstone will always have a very special place in my heart, even though this volume wasn't my favorite.

This volume heavily talks about the importance of communication with your partner. Some people view BDSM as a getaway or a fantasy from their real life, but others want to make BDSM a lifestyle. Obviously I'm not judging either path people choose to take, but, personally, I am much more interested in the fantasy aspect rather than the lifestyle choice. So, I think that is why this volume didn't speak to me as much as Vol. 1, even though I will say this volume is very, very important and this topic is a needed one.

Self-bondage is heavily discussed in this issue, with an even heavier emphasis on the importance of safe rope play. Again, having communication and compatibility with your partner is a must, because safety will always be the greatest priority in a BDSM relationship of any kind or level.

This volume also talks about fetish models and S&M performers. We are introduced to the BDSM club, the Crimson, that Alan custom makes the sets for. I absolutely loved seeing this club, and seeing Ally and Lisa interact with other people. I cannot wait to continue on with Vol. 3.

The cover indicates something darkly sexual, so if you are looking for something like that, go elsewhere. This is the story of the developing friendship and romantic relationship between Ally and Lisa and a growing group of friends who represent different perspectives on bdsm. But in case you are at all curious, there's very little actual sex that you even see. This volume is mostly about Ally's backstory and new friends and how Alan, Ally's former lover and current best friend and bdsm furniture and equipment designer, figures in to the equation (friend so far). This is maybe not quite a 4 star story volume, but the artwork, the subtle expressive emotions, the color (all these reds!), all great.

Despite the cover this volume really tones down the kink and focuses on Ally's past. Sejic is a master of expressive faces. I don't think the book would even work if he wasn't because most of the book is just people talking to each other.

Ever since I read and absolutely loved the first volume in this series I ordered the rest of them and they finally came :) so naturally I picked up the sequel immediately :) in case you were wondering, this is an FF romance with some BDSM themes and even though it’s sexy af for sure, I will repeat what I said in my review of the first part… the main adjectives I would use to describe it are hilarious and adorable… I love those sexual nerds ;) in this sequel we follow next part of the story between Ally and Lisa, we learn a bit more about them, specifically about Ally… through flashbacks we discover things that made her who she is today… sorry, can’t get into any more details, too spoilerific :) but even though the whole installment was a bit more serious than the first one, I really liked it… yes, we got some light and funny moments, but I truly loved the more vulnerable scenes between Ally and Lisa… I have the rest of them on my shelf, just waiting for me to pick them up… and I am truly tempted to just binge read all of them one after another… but I think I’m gonna pace myself a bit… I want to make them last a bit longer… although I already have a suspicion that this will be a series I will reread on more than one occasion ;) if you have any doubts about picking up this story, I would highly recommend you give the first one a try :)

XOXO

Oh, Sunstone! My love of loves. Crown of my comic book/graphic novel collection. Truly, you deserve all my praise and adoration...

Let me start by saying I love reading comics that make me feel good, but I love comics that make me feel an entire range of emotion even more. Sunstone does both, and this volume in particular pulls the heartstrings in every direction, in the best possible way. I can't say enough about Stjepan Sejic for the work he's done with this story and these characters. It's pure genius and groundbreaking on so many levels. What he does in humanizing LGBTQ individuals, as well as the BDSM community is unrivaled by any other form of media I've encountered. Not only does he introduce you to the world of BDSM, he does it in a way that removes the fear of the unknown and replaces it with fascination and understanding. Each character is treated with love and respect, so much so that even my feminist sensibilities are enraptured by the sexier scenes. At no point can I say an image is inappropriate or exploitative - and that's saying a lot considering the subject matter. This is art. It's tasteful, funny, emotional, sexy, and oh-so beautifully made.

Okay, okay. So, what about the artwork? Fantastic. Gorgeous. I'm a big fan of Sejic's style in general, but the balance he strikes between realistic and cartoonish in Sunstone is definitely my favourite of his works. It looks real enough to take the heavier, more emotional moments seriously, and it's cartoonish enough to give life to the comedic moments.

Have I talked enough about the writing yet? It's top-notch. It gives you all the feels and explains everything it needs to, without making you dizzy with walls of text. It's funny, spunky, smart, silly, deep, self-deprecating, emotional - it's everything you could want in an enjoyable read, and then some. If you haven't read volume 1, what are you waiting for?! And if you've already read volume 1... Well, you probably just went ahead and read this book without bothering looking up reviews.

Anyway. Go get it. Now. It might just be the best comic you'll ever read.

This series is fast becoming a firm favourite of mine. I read the first one very recently and really wanted to get the second so as soon as I visited a comic shop it was my first purchase. I truly think that this storyline is one of the best representations of BDSM relationships I have ever read and one of the most genuine and true. This is an erotic and explicit series, but it's also beautifully illustrated and comes across as quirky, loveable and fun. Trust and safety are things that people who don't practise BDSM will perhaps not consider as important as the fetish-crazed sexy-time. However, Sejic knows what he talks about in this and his main characters are sensible and clever despite the mistakes they may have made in the past.

This volume focuses more on the past of Ally which was really interesting to see. We also get to meet a few new character who become a fun part of the group and add a few more perspectives on BDSM culture and life into the mix. I particularly liked that periods and the frustration of them was well-handled as again, this isn't something which I see a lot of in any book-format, let alone erotic BDSM ones. I felt this added the genuine spark it needed to be whole-heartedly believable and I can truly say I really relate (in different ways) to each of our main characters.

This story is not only wonderfully told and focusing on the right things for me personally, but the art style itself is stunningly captivating. I truly love the style and I think its rich, luxurious dark tones compliment the story and setting so well. Some of the expressions and moments between the characters are so perfectly timed and captured that I do feel as though it's all unfolding before me rather than that I'm reading it in a book.

This series is marvellous. I will certainly get the next two volumes and I am really looking forward to them. 4.5*s again and this one does not disappoint :)

The second volume and this time less sexy times and more and more backstory. Which I loved, but still I wouldn’t mind even more sexy times.

After reading the first volume and falling head over heels with this couple, the art, and the story, I just had to continue reading to see if Ally and Lisa would stay together (given that we see them x years after I am going with a full YES) and if they would have the talk. As both of them seem to like each other more than the other is thinking. Plus, I hoped for more sexy times. I am still quite new to the BDSM stuff, so at times it was a bit too much (for me), but I also loved it.

In this one we see more Ally and Lisa, who find some new ways to have sexy times while not being able to do much (as Lisa is on her period, I so understood her bother when it came to visit). We see them grow much closer and getting more lovey-dovey.

We learn of various new things, a whole lot of backstory that features mostly Ally. We learn about her relationship with Alan, we see that two doms didn’t work out as the one always tried to overdo what the other did. I am so happy that despite their break-up in college, despite that it ended like this, that they are now best friends.
And we also learn of Marion, the ex of Alan. What happened to her and why Ally feels oh so guilty. Though she shouldn’t. No one blames her. No one. As Lisa said when Ally confided in her, some people don’t have common sense. 😐 I hope that Ally can find some more confidence in Lisa and see that she is not like Marion. Yes, she is a sub, but she will never go so far til it hurts or til it’s too far.

We also see the club that we have heard about. And oh my goodness. We see several very interesting performances that will probably stun you (unless you are used to it) but will also delight.

The art is just amazing! As I said in the previous volume’s review I am just a big big fan of the art in this one, and even have it on my phone as lock and normal wallpaper. heart eyes

While I am not THAT interested in all the other characters (with the exception of Alan), I am still happy we met so many new people. I do hope that the next volumes mostly will be about Lisa and Ally though and feature tons of new sexy times.

Bullet Review:

This book is more about Ally and Lisa's developing relationship - and Ally's background with Alan and Marion.

Perhaps not quite as good as volume 1, but honestly, these characters are so cute!

Sunstone Vol. 2 had mostly the same problems as it's predecessor.

Weird panels, too much exposition, forced drama, fluctuating quality of art etc.

I enjoyed this volume far more than the previous one though. So what changed for the better this time round?

1. A freaking great and effective opening spread. Even the borders of the panels allude to the building of trust between the couple. The motion is almost visible, like that of an animatic, the art is solid, even the text is placed perfectly and doesn't overwhelm the page.
description

2. A page following the above spread that ingeniously uses a more realistic illustration in order to exude eroticism. What I really love about this page is that it's a close up, so it tricks your mind and eases it in this far more realistic and detailed scene because of course, when you see objects up close you also get to see more details. So it doesn't seem weird to transition from a more cartoony page to this one, it doesn't bother the eye, it's seamless. I'm in love with this transition. I think it's masterful storytelling-wise, and is one of the reasons I like sequential art so much. Because it can manipulate your vision, your brain, with neat little tricks like that.
description
These things are why I hold Šejić to such a high standard. This is why I want to claw my eyes out when only 2 pages after this eyecandy we see this proportionless bobblehead atrocity:
description

3. The period thing. Now come on, how many (cis) male artists do you know that would actually remember that many women get their periods, especially when they're illustrating erotic scenes with beautiful women? Most don't seem capable of understanding simple breast physics and bra functions. It might seem like a small thing to people who've never had a period but it ain't. And the dude actually drew the wings of a pad in a realistic highly erotic scene. Yes Šejić you're the man. I'd LOVE to see more comicbook artists not shying away from depicting menstruation as if it's just a disgusting thing that happens to people on galaxies far-far away.

4. Flashbacks with decent narration and good art. I'm all up for using a narrator as a device when recounting past events, when it's done like this. You could argue that the whole comic is a flashback, which is true, but not all portions of it are as well written and believable as the ones is this book.

5. Different faces OMG! Well...only for the guys at least because apparently there's only one type of beautiful woman and we cannot deviate from that now can we? The men were all unique in their own way, different cheeckbones, noses, chins, lips, foreheads, weights and body types. There are four men in this book and all have a different, and very distinct style. I wish it were the same for the women too though. We have more than four women and they all have the same features, the same face, with different wigs on. Oh, well, can't have everything I guess.

I really like Šejić's notes at the end of each volume. This one was filled with illustrations and redesigns of older panels.

I think I'll continue reading this.

I'm so glad I bought the 1st volume of this without even bothering to see what the subject was, since it would likely have put me off. Why? Because on the surface it's a graphic novel about a lesbian BDSM love affair – so it sounds like pure porn, right? Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, there's occasional toplessness, or even near-nudity, and certainly the occasional outfit is provocative and, sure, alluring. But that's not what this story is about. It's about love, and trust, and courage, and being true to yourself. It's about masks and about truth. It's about being different, and accepting that. And it's beautifully drawn, brilliantly observed, and amazingly nuanced. The dialogue and the expressions are perfect, and the characters are deeply endearing. In this volume, Ally and Lisa take the next hesitant steps in their deepening relationship, and more friends come into the picture. We also get to know some of their regrets and fears. And once again, Sejic finishes up with a few pages on the creative process. For a writer or artist, I suspect that alone would be worth the price of admission. I think this may well be a work of genius. Uplifting.

Continuing on from the stellar first volume of Sunstone, the aptly named "Volume 2" is a lot of the same - endearing romantic comedy, light-hearted and totally romanticized, and heavy S&M and bondage sex. That's our Sunstone!

I think this volume does a way better job at evening out some of the more realistic dangers of diving straight into complex BDSM scenarios - it even addresses the inherent ridiculousness of our protagonists meeting on a complete whim - but it also introduces a whole lot more "problems" in doing so. Well, I say "problems"... this is an unrealistic portrayal of the whole scene, and Sunstone knows it. Stjepan Šejić is no fool, and he gets that this is a totally surreal fantasy interpretation of what would, though potentially intriguing, would be quite boring if presented as it is in real life. Y'know? It's a romcom. It takes the biggest of life's moments and compacts them down into buzzwords and cuteness. I can dig it.

The big "problem" (so-called) is that Lisa and Ally apparently inhabit a universe in which BDSM is some kind of prevalent lifestyle. Well... no, that's not right. All we see of this universe is that BDSM is a prevalent lifestyle. There's a huge chunk of book devoted to Ally's college years, as she discovers more and more her drives and desires and role as a domme. We never really see, though, that there's anything to the contrary - we're so sucked in to the culture that surrounds S&M that there's never any impetus to imagine that there's a world outside of it, even as our characters insist that there is.

It's not a problem, of course. A book about BDSM focusing on BDSM? I'd be pretty awful if I thought that wasn't in Sunstone's favour. But it goes a way to contributing to the fantasy aspect - every character we meet is in some way related to the "scene," and it's somewhat surreal. Which plays to the genre's strengths, but does reduce the impact, I think, of later revelations. ...I don't know. Consider it a mere thought; it's not detraction from the story Sunstone is telling, or the characters it's asking us to identify with.

That's really all there is to say. My thoughts were overwhelmingly positive towards Volume 1 and I'm likewise positive towards Volume 2. A lot of what I said about Sunstone's first release is applicable here - the biggest changes are that the cast is expanding, and the stakes are maybe slightly higher. Lisa still considers her love for Ally a mere "crush" (which, again, is sort of what drives romance fiction, so I'm letting that slide), and the deeper themes are presented as no less or more complex than any of the others. I would consider it a teeny bit heavier than Volume 1, especially in regards to exploring the potential physical and emotional harm that is a very real risk in these scenarios and encounters, but it's no less inherently farcical - and that farce is no less intimate, sweet, funny, cute, and likeable.

Sunstone Volume 2. It's like Sunstone Volume 1, but with more of it. Why not!

Not as great as Volume 1 but I will continue this series. I really enjoy all the panels and scenes with Ally and Lisa. They are my favorite characters with Alan coming in second. I liked the fact that we learned more about Lisa and her past. It was nice to see Ally comfort Lisa and try to reassure her that the rope issue with her previous sub wasn't her fault.

I really didn't care about the other background characters. Not sure how they will come into play but I really don't care about them. I was bored when Ally and/or Lisa weren't the main focus. I will continue reading the series. I know they are endgame so I am curious to see what bumps on the road they will encounter.

Whatever else may be wrong with comics at present, I'm sure this must be the first decade where lesbian BDSM could be played as a charming romance story, rather than for raunch or transgression. Even the more didactic scenes manage to be touching when they could so easily have come across as clumsy.

This might be a bit weird to write about a BDSM series, but this is so damn cute.

In this installment of Sunstone, Vol. 2, we delve deeper into the past of Ally and Lisa, who has just recently begun a BDSM relationship - but who are both feeling more than just the sexual buzz. It's not only interesting to read about, but also actually very educational for people who are interested in the BDSM community.

Spoiler alert; it's all about trust, you guys.

I've read quite a lot by Stjepan Šejić by now, and I am actually so impressed by how different all his works are (Ravine Volume 1, Death Vigil, Vol. 1 and this are all miles apart) and how it just works. His art is beautiful, but it's more than that. He has definitely become an artist that I keep an eye out for, and Sunstone has just convinced me more of this.

I'll definitely keep on reading Sunstone. I love me some diverse, wholesome and sexy shit.

v2 continues to dazzle. Šejić has amazing expressive control of his characters, wonderfully nuanced facial expressions and body language. And he even makes the dead space between panels interesting and relevant.

Here he delves more deeply into the culture, visiting a tony S&M club and introducing a number of new characters who span a range of immersion in BDSM, from hardcore practitioners and artists to moderately curious to “vanilla people”. We get Ally's backstory, her introduction to domming and her history with Alan.

While the group dynamics are fun and funny, and the characters are pleasingly three dimensional, there’s…kind of a lot of whining in volume 2. But that little setback doesn't keep v2 from 5 stars.

There’s not a lot of sex. BDSM is the setting. It's the backdrop, not the point. I like that Sunstone isn’t about fan service.

I enjoyed this. Just not as much as the last one. It was very talky (I know that that is not a word, but that is the only thing I can think of to describe this). I don't mind that, but there was SO MUCH DIALOGUE. It just was about the character's past, and everything, and like great, but ok. I just liked the last one better.
