The Band of the Hawk may have been the most formidable band of fighters around, but when matched up against an army of abyssal monstrosities, earthly fighting skills don’t amount to a hill of beans. The Hawks’ tortured and mutilated former leader, Griffith, has used the accursed Crimson Behelit to open the gates to a shadowy realm of unspeakable horrors, the realm of the demon lords of the Godhand, who are willing to transform Griffith into a being of terrible power and majesty as long as Griffith is willing to give up his former command as sacrifices in the Invocation of Doom. But nobody takes down the Hawks without a fight, and their berserker champion, Guts, will take on anything Hell can throw at him in order to save his lover, Casca, from the sordid violations that only Hell can offer.

Kentarou Miura (三浦建太郎) was born in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1966. He is left-handed. In 1976, at the early age of 10, Miura made his first Manga, entitled "Miuranger", that was published for his classmates in a school publication; the manga ended up spanning 40 volumes. In 1977, Miura created his second manga called Ken e no michi (剣への道 The Way to the Sword), using Indian ink for the first time. When he was in middle school in 1979, Miura's drawing techniques improved greatly as he started using professional drawing techniques. His first dōjinshi was published, with the help of friends, in a magazine in 1982.

That same year, in 1982, Miura enrolled in an artistic curriculum in high school, where he and his classmates started publishing their works in school booklets, as well as having his first dōjinshi published in a fan-produced magazine. In 1985, Miura applied for the entrance examination of an art college in Nihon University. He submitted Futanabi for examination and was granted admission. This project was later nominated Best New Author work in Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Another Miura manga Noa was published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine the very same year. Due to a disagreement with one of the editors, the manga was stalled and eventually dropped altogether. This is approximately where Miura's career hit a slump.

In 1988, Miura bounced back with a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, as an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. It went on to win Miura a prize from the Comi Manga School. In 1989, after receiving a doctorate degree, Kentarou started a project titled King of Wolves (王狼, ōrō?) based on a script by Buronson, writer of Hokuto no Ken. It was published in the monthly Japanese Animal House magazine in issues 5 and 7 of that year.

In 1990, a sequel is made to Ourou entitled Ourou Den (王狼伝 ōrō den, The Legend of the Wolf King) that was published as a prequel to the original in Young Animal Magazine. In the same year, the 10th issue of Animal House witnesses the first volume of the solo project Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga titled Japan, that was published in Young Animal House from the 1st issue to the 8th of 1992, and was later released as a stand-alone tankōbon. Miura's fame grew after Berserk was serialized in Young Animal in 1992 with the release of "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of his masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary mangakas. At this time Miura dedicates himself solely to be working on Berserk. He has indicated, however, that he intends to publish more manga in the future.

In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. Various art books and supplemental materials by Miura based on Berserk are also released. In 1999, Miura made minor contributions to the Dreamcast video game Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage. 2004 saw the release of yet another video game adaptation entitled Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Record of the Holy Demon War.

Since that time, the Berserk manga has spanned 34 tankōbon with no end in sight. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan-made, ranging from statues, action figures to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentarou Miura received the second place in the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award of Excellence for Berserk.[1]

Miura provided the design for the Vocaloid Kamui Gakupo, whose voice is taken from the Japanese singer and actor, Gackt.

Miura passed away on May 6, 2021 at 2:48 p.m. due to acute aortic dissection.

Oh, man. This volume and the previous one have left me with a dreadful feeling of anguish mixed with shock and pity. I knew it was coming because I've seen the anime, but this was much worse. It hurts me deeply to see Guts lose every single person he loves. Yes, Casca and Griffith are still alive, but one has gone insane as a result of the trauma of rape and the other turned into a demon by betraying his devoted followers and offering them as sacrifice. So, in the end, the two people he cared about the most are both gone. He's lost everything, and that scene where he's running and screaming really hit me.

About this particular rape scene, it had started building up since Griffith's rescue. He started to realize that, during his encarceration, Griffith had lost both Guts and Casca, the two people he loved owning the most. They were no longer his property. What's worse, they were now lovers. I'm sure he never thought he'd lose his power over them. So, being the sick bastard he is, it seems he thought he should take revenge on Guts not only for leaving the Hawks and causing him to spiral and make that one terrible mistake, but also for taking Casca for himself. So the rape fits in the storyline.
However, I feel like the way it was shown looked a lot more like porn than a rape. Sure, we see Casca saying "no", blood coming down her legs and tears in her eyes, but I couldn't see real pain. I saw more pain in Guts's face for having to witness his first and only love being raped than in Casca's face for being the one who's actually being raped. I don't like that the scene works more as a sex scene than a disgusting and disturbing attack. Like, if you saw it without any context, without knowing it's rape, it doesn't look like it, it almost looks like Casca is enjoying it. It almost looks like it was drawn to turn on rather than shock.
I feel like it's been done the same way throughout the manga so far. I understand that Berserk is set in a time when rape was a common thing so, as awful as this may sound, I'm not against seeing rape regularly because it adds to the horrific world-building... although it does get tiresome, because it seems men (or male monsters) see someone with boobs and a pretty face and their first thought is that they want to fuck them. I mean, I get it, but is it really necessary to show it all the time when it doesn't add to the plot? It almost feels like an excuse to show naked women. I'd be more or less fine with this, except I haven't seen a sexual assault drawn as a truly violent and scary thing, with the exception of when Guts was raped as a kid. When women get assaulted, we see their naked bodies from more than one angle, we see their trembling limbs, their pointy nipples being licked and their breasts being squeezed. It's always over-sexualized. On the other hand, when Guts was raped, there was a struggle with him being naked, but the actual rape, the penetration, was only one single drawing that barely showed any details of Guts's body, and it was more than enough to cause an impression: it made a far bigger impression than Casca's rape scene in this volume and it's not just because Guts was only a kid when it happened. I just feel like the rapes on women are drawn too erotically and it pisses me off. It's the only thing that pisses me off about this manga.

I am heartbroken. Even though I knew what the outcome would be, i still feel SO mad and betrayed I can hardly believe what I’ve seen in this volume. This is undoubtedly the most disturbing and dark series I’ve ever seen. Now I understand why it’s known as the best manga of all time. Because it is.

This volume was INSANE!
Pipin dies, Corkus even though nobody really likes him died, and come to think of it he isn't really a bad person, not a full fledged bad person anyway, he is just a bully, and he only bullies Guts so yeah...
Godue died...
Hell was unleashed... no the scenes in this volume was even worse then a hell could ever be!
Its just out of this world crazy! and gore, and pure evil!
And it was all the wish of Griffith!
Who hates Guts so much that he raped Casca in front of him....
And still somehow, when he was going to attack the skull knight, he held himself back just for the sake of Guts, I mean what the hell is he thinking really, So far i don't know...
Gaston says this all feels like a dream, like i am a minor character in a crazy book, written by some crazy writer, Actually buddy you are, and your one, and only crazy writer is Kentaro Miura.
From the cover of the next Volume, it looks like we will be reading about Guts, in his black swords man persona, and of course puck will be back.

Minus 2 stars for Miura's endless exploitation and objectification of Casca. Mind you, even just after she's been brutally raped and traumatized so much her mind has regressed to that of a child, Miura draws her like this:

https://cdn.readberserk.com/file/Anim...

https://cdn.readberserk.com/file/Anim...

https://cdn.readberserk.com/file/Anim...

For which there is absolutely no reason to, except fan service. Let that sink in, offering fan service in the form of a raped, traumatized, mentally regressed woman. It is so incredibly uncalled for. Berserk has an amazing story, but this ruins it, in my eyes at least. Maybe if I were a horny teenager with a not yet developed empathy.

I am fascinated by the world-building and what the eclipse will mean for the world, but the gratuitous nature of a rape scenes was not it, it was too long and it felt exploitative rather than relevant to the narrative.
I am on volume 13 so I know what to expect but this was too much. and pointless.

SUPER FAST REVIEW:
Holy shit, I love this series!
This volume may be the most disturbing yet most emotional volume yet. The story progresses a lot despite it being so heavy on bloody battles. The artwork is great as always.
Really if you’re a fan of the dark fantasy genre and don’t mind seeing some truly twisted shit happen to characters you will most likely become very interested in, Berserk is an emotional and amazingly written yet also action packed and disturbing piece of storytelling that I can’t recommend enough!
Highly recommended!

So cometh the rock bottom. Everyone is dead or worse, and all hope is lost. The final culmination of the Golden Age, the advent of the Dark Age - the black day that truly begun the whole story and that still casts its shadow over it all, more than twenty years later.

Who is to say, after all, that it does not happen again? Now that we've seen the darkest depths this story can go to, how can we truly know for sure that Guts's new companions, Isidiro and Farnese and the others, are safe?

This has gotten fetishistic to the point that it ruined most of the build-up done in last volume. Still, the Eclipse is iconic for right reasons.

Miura, please, stop treating your female character stock as mules being driven by the carrot stick of male bravado. If you are to brutalize and rape and torture them, don’t allow these characters to relinquish their hard honed skills in favour of tears and insecurity just so that your males shine on as the broken heroes. It detracts from the tragedy. It robs it of a fully actualized beauty. I hope this aspect has been improved upon in later volumes. It’s really the only smudge on an otherwise magnificent painting.

It's at this point in the series where the writing crosses the line from being "disturbing" to being "exploitational". The depiction of rape here is pornography, not the brutal reality of a dark fantasy world. The whole time I was reading it I got the impression that Miura thought this was more titillating than horrifying, and that colors everything else in a bad light. What am I supposed to think about this story and its view of women, especially Casca, the token female soldier who has been sexually assaulted half a dozen times at this point? If you're giving this volume five stars, I don't know what to tell you.

Most of this volume is spent with Guts battling his way through the hellscape of the Eclipse. Just monster after monster.

Lots more sexual violence against Casca, she can't seem to catch a break... it's getting a bit ridiculous.

I'm excited to see where the story goes now that Guts is branded and has demons coming after him.

Fine continuation of the story, but makes ya feel kinda dirty after reading it.

Made me wonder where the line between exploitative vs just dark should be.

"Guerriero marchiato...mostrami come resisterai, con il corpo di un uomo...al deserto delle anime erranti, al mondo della notte...che si aprirà davanti a te d'ora in poi."

(Vols 9-13)

Oof this is pretty impossible to rate, for a number of reasons. This series is great in almost all aspects (the art continues to be stunning - mandatory to say in all reviews - and the story is still gripping) but I felt that there were two volumes here that sticked out. Vol 11 felt a bit boring at points, since we're presented to an apostle whose kink is sex and violence (which doesn't really add anything to the story and only feels gratuitous, especially since the bit of worldbuilding there was already addressed with Zodd, and is given much more depth in the Eclipse, just a couple of issues later). There's an "almost-rape" scene with Casca (again) which is never mentioned afterwards, because by now she should be used to be assaulted, right? In any case, if I had to sum it up in one word, I'd just say this volume felt unnecessary.
Volume 13 is a whole different story. It was not unnecessary at all, and we get some truly awesome Lovecraftian hellish scenes, with the Godhand showing up for a disturbing unilateral massacre. But the rape, man. It looked like porn, designed to turn on teenage boys, and I couldn't help feeling bothered with the way it was handled. I have complained about Casca's treatment before, but let me clarify: I don't have a problem seeing her naked - or might as well stop reading :') - and as a quick example, I loved Vol 9, which has tons sex scenes between her and Guts. Sure, one could argue that it was also gratuitous, but it served a clear purpose to the growth of both characters. Especially in the Wounds arc, where they both get to know each other better and try to work out through their own traumatic experiences, I distinctly thought it was one of the (if not the) most emotionally mature arc, even having tender parts where they solidify their relationship. And as for rape, you could say the fact that it's so frequent is part of the worldbuilding, but if there's sexual assault in pretty much every issue, it becomes trivialized. That's the lesser problem though. Another example here is Gut's case - the actual rape scene took literally one panel, and not only it was not sexualized at all (the focus is on the rapist's giant body, looming over Guts tiny body) but it was also drawn in a horrifying way, portraying it as a serious and grave scene. This one panel has more impact than the entire issue with Casca, where we see her naked again from a ton of different erotic angles. I could honestly only see pain in Guts eyes (as he's forced to watch) and not in the actual person who's suffering an unspeakable violation by a person she used to trust, and it makes me sad that now that she was finally slightly well-rounded (showing some minimal growth past the two male MCs) Miura doesn't know what to do with her anymore and basically "kills" the character, and insults her by giving her the good old "amnesia-storyline" treatment afterwards. It seems like it only serves to advance Guts storyline (watching the whole Band of the Hawks get gruesomely murdered was not enough? Killing Casca would have been better than this, and served exactly the same purpose). And I kind of hope they won't bring her back as an actual character, since I don't trust Miura to treat her with respect, at this point. And yes, I know that this was written in the 90's, but I'm also currently reading a book from the 1870's with a female MC that gets much more empowerement than here, so it's harder to forgive it here. So yeah, that issue just left the sourest taste in my mouth, which is a damn shame, as basically everything else on all other volumes is so spetacular.
Fuck that issue. And fuck Griffith. (On a second thought, do NOT fuck Griffith).

A book like this is hard to rate. It is a disgusting dive into the darkest pit of misery. Credit to Miura for having the guts to go all in on this and kill off so most of the main cast. This is the end result of Griffith's claim that everyone will die for him. The inevitable conclusion of his willingness to do anything for his dream. And the gory implication of his view on friendship and will. This is essentially the inciting incident for the story of Guts. He had a nearly complete arc up until this point. He was miserable and alone, carrying the weight of his childhood trauma. He slowly found a place in the world, people who cared for him, and a reason for living. We got to see him progressively reach that point, following Guts through every obstacle and setback. He found someone he could share his trauma with, people who respected him, and someone he admired. He just realized that everything he wanted- his reason to live- was here all along. And at the last moment, it's all destroyed. And just like when he was a child, this horrible trauma has turned him into a monster with no purpose in life aside from killing. He's set back to where he was at the start of the golden age, but with even more pain to carry. I've said it before and I'll probably say it again. Berserk is an existentialist story about dealing with trauma. And our protagonist has suffered the worst trauma imaginable that simultaneous destroyed just about everything he had going for him. He is getting close to rock bottom and falling fast.

I don't have much more to analyze here. I'm basically reviewing a well crafted dagger that has stabbed me in the heart.

This probably ranks as one of my least favorite manga reading experiences ever. I don't mind this mix of psychedelic body horror and S&M fantasy, but I'm having a hard time coming to terms with the way sexual violence is used in this volume. Far from an enjoyable read for me, despite the incredible art. A trigger warning would have been nice.

Okay I'm done.

I'm not joking. This is the darkest thing I've ever read. I'm disturbed as hell and I'm hard to disturb. Worse then any death on Game of Thrones. And I want someone dead more then I've wanted Ramsay, Joffrey, or Cersei to bite it....WHO KNEW!!!!???

This boy better get is arse kicked. I don't care who does it.

Seriously, NOT for the faint hearted. Holy shit.

Berserk vol 13 will not only crush your heart, it will crush your soul!!!

Saddest and most disturbing manga volume yet. The readers get the obvious feeling that something bad is about to happen, but still they will be left speechless at the end of this arc.

Completely heartbreaking end to the Eclipse. Everything awful that you can imagine happens. Horrific. Extreme trigger warnings especially relevant for this volume. Some things are handled ... not in the most tasteful of ways which is disappointing.

Why do I give this volume only 2 stars?

Because the way Miura depicts rape scenes annoys me. Casca during that scene looked almost as if she enjoyed it. Instead of a tragic scene it came out as some kind of porn. Her perfect breasts, her body shown from every angle-mainly this is what the manga author focused on. This is not how it should be. As a woman, I felt very uncomfortable and was disgusted by how badly this rape scene was portrayed. I had the feeling as if it was all about showing the sexy female body there. Poor Casca, she doesn't deserve to be sexualized that much. I like this series a lot, however, I think that sexual violence against women is very poorly portrayed in it. I really understand the concept that rape and the subject treatment of women in the brutal world of Berserk is a common thing. However, Miura makes these scenes into typical fanservice, which makes it very hard for me to read at times.
