I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, David Estes, and the publisher, Smashwords, for this opportunity.

This is the third and final instalment in a science fiction trilogy, set in the dystopian, fictional future of our own world. Rising sea levels and diminished resources means the human species is under threat of extinction. The only way to save the entire human race is to sacrifice a few. The ruthless government organisation, known as Pop Con, have theorised that for our species to continue to thrive our numbers must be capped. For one to be born, another must die. Any born outside of this algorithm are labelled as illegal 'Slips', and all these slips must be neutralised.

This series has provided a complete turn around of emotions! I enjoyed the premise of this series but little else. I loved everything about the second book and found the plot more gritty and fulfilling to read. And my feelings on this book is an amalgamation of how I felt about the previous two.

This was a very action-dominated series. Whilst that was executed brilliantly my preference is for slower more character-dominated stories. I find much of the science fiction genre to be not exactly suited to my tastes because of this. It is, of course, no fault of the book that I could not fall in love with it for that reason.

The initial quarter of this novel provided me with the reprieve from action to focus on the individuals, which I really appreciated. I loved learning of the relationships that had formed over the previous books and how the events had tightened or obliterated them. This moment of quiet was soon over and the high-stakes action continued to dominate.

The world was vastly more developed in this instalment and learning more about this dystopian society through the expanding geography was really enlightening. As the world grew so, too, did my accord with it.

Despite this, I found the ending to be a little predictable and my attention began to wane in the second half, due to the expected outcome of events. This is still a fun trilogy and, although not exactly suited to my tastes, good at what it does and raising some thought-provoking questions about the future of humanity with our ever expanding population.

Flip is a great conclusion to the Slip trilogy. I really enjoyed these characters. In the final book you learn more about the characters and why they are doing what they are doing. There is also a lot of action, fighting and tense moments. David Estes is a great young adult writer and he gets better with each story. I recommend him all the time to people and even to my library. I recommend you pick up this trilogy. It’s a great take on what could happen to this country if the country physically shrunk.

"Don't cry because its over, smile because it happened." --Dr. Suess

And that's exactly how I feel as I am now at the end of this fantastic story. The Kelly family's journey through this trilogy was just amazing, moving from one extreme to the other. Although I'm sad its over, I'm thrilled I got to experience it!

Flip was all I wanted and then some. Everything that was good about the first two books continues here in the finale. The stakes have been upped, and the read was even more intense, with even better action sequences. But Flip stays true to the basic story of a family trying to be together and free in a terrible world.

**I should mention now that there might be spoilers for Slip and Grip, but none for Flip. **

Things I love about Flip:

The Kelly Family My absolute favorite thing about this trilogy, from beginning to end has been the theme throughout about family. This is such an important theme, and one that is missing a lot in YA. My family is the most important thing in the world to me, and I'm sure is the same with most people. How great to see a series touching on this in such a relevant and realistic way. This family is not perfect. They love each other and drive each other crazy at times. But in the end, it is their loyalty to each other that makes all the difference.

"“Family doesn’t go one way. It goes every way. We help each other, we protect each other, and we die for each other, if that’s what it takes.”

The Characters I'm not going to touch on each one, as they are all really good in this book. I feel that any character development that was lacking in the previous books (especially the first one) all comes together here. These characters are all complex, with moments of both highs and lows. And all of the main characters had a complete story arc that made sense and fit into the story perfectly.

The World Building One of my absolute favorite things in any series is when the world building just builds and builds with each book. The world building in Flip jumps leaps and bounds from the first two books. We get to see a lot more of this crazy world, and most of it is done through the ads and articles in between each chapter. Like before, it really gives us an insight to the public's viewpoint, as most of our characters are in hiding and almost in the dark themselves. Just really brilliantly done.

Comedy Hour Despite this being a very dark, intense story, I was LOLing through a lot of it! I love the humor throughout, and think its a perfect balance with action and suspense. A few of my favorite lines:

"Eventually, Simon shifts his position, grunting lightly, and then says, “Nice makeover.”
“Are you hitting on me?” Harrison jokes.
“All I want is to be your frienemy,” Simon jokes back.
“I’m not ready for commitment,” Harrison says. “Too young for that. "

"Minda says, “Yeah. Just do what Janice does and you’ll be fine.”
“You want us to all wear tiger-striped dresses?” Harrison asks.
“Sure. So long as you laser your legs first,” Minda says."

The Twists Again, lots more of them happening in the finale! I'm not sure I've ever seen a twist written as well as the big one in Slip, but the ones in here I think have topped it! MIND BLOWN!

The Writing Loved it. Just beautiful writing. I'll give you a few examples:

"“Words can split logs and start fires and break stones, but they can also hug you and warm you and fight the wars you don’t have the strength to fight.”

"But then I realized that life is a gift that can’t be replaced. Life is the purpose. Life is always worth it, no matter how terrible you feel, no matter what mistakes you've made, or others have made. This world isn’t for running. It’s for standing. It’s for fighting."

Need I say more?

The Action I mentioned it before, but these were AWESOME action scenes! They went on for pages, were very detailed, and the pacing was perfect. Really made the pages fly!

The Ending One of the best endings to a trilogy EVER. Everything tied together nicely, it all made sense, and we got a wonderful epilogue that tells us what's up with our favorite characters a year after the story. Really loved that!

Flip was an EPIC finale and I loved every minute of this book! After the last page, I was in a book fog, and it took me a bit to come back to the real world. These characters were just so real to me. Slip is one of the best trilogies I have ever read. I will be thinking about it for a long while.

And I'll leave you with another favorite quote:

"It’s not the power of the universe rallying against him, but humans. Just men and women full of hate and evil and ignorance. Nothing more, nothing less. And humans can be defeated, no matter the odds. In the end, good has a chance to prevail if those who wield its mighty sword do not lose hope."

Wow, what a series. I really loved these books, it was like The Hunger Games, but I may have enjoyed these more. Like I said when reviewing the last two books, these do not have nearly enough praise and that makes me sad.

The final book is what everyone has been waiting for, puzzle pieces are finally clicking and you want to keep turning the page to see what happens next, although, at the same time you want to take your time because you are not ready for the book to end. I truly felt that all the characters were well developed and it was easy to relate to each one. The conclusion satisfied me, I am content with how the series ended.

I did only give this book 4 stars whereas, the first two I had given 5 stars. The reason for this was because I felt like there were some parts that dragged on in this book but overall it was a great book.

I want to give a HUGE thank you to netgalley and the publishers for not only providing me with the trilogy but also introducing me to a series I fell in love with.

Before I started Flip I have to admit I was a bit hesitant I thought Grip was a great book, but it also had been a hard book and I knew this book was going to be dark as well and the characters would have to get through some more hardship before the ending. My expectations turned out to be right, but I didn't expect the ending to be so beautiful and maybe it was even better because of how hard the journey was to get there. It was totally worth it and I really enjoyed this book. It's the perfect ending to this trilogy and I think this is David his best series yet, although it's also dark and depressing at times, it's really well written and worth it in the end.

Flip mostly deals with the build-up to the event at the end of the book, there was a lot of anticipation and build-up, but the characters certainly don't sit still. This book aligned all the pieces in the right way, tied of the loose ends and showed us some great scenes along the way and then when the I got at the ending I just had to keep reading, because I had to know what would happen next and how would make it out alive. I am not going to spoil more, but I was really happy with the ending.

Beside the story there is also a lot of focus on the characters and interpersonal relationships, there are a lot of changes and it was amazing to see. We have Harrison and Benson who are mostly together in this book and they are getting used to being brothers and it's so amazing seeing them become a family and there's Janice, who might seem crazy, but she says the smartest things sometimes. And almost everything that came out of her mouth in this book was quote worthy and even though she seems weird, it's perfect and how she fits into it all. The Kelly family is one of the best things about this book and it's great seeing them together and trying to be a family even though everything that happened that tried to tear them apart.

Then there's Destiny, she still has a long way to go in this book after the aftermath of the previous books and I liked the characters development in this book. There are also some chapters from the characters who are still stuck with the lifers, although just enough to keep up to date with their plans and what's going on. I also came to like Minda and Simon even more in this book and we learn more about both of them, there's this interesting titbit of info about Simon's past that we learn, that really surprised me. And then there's Lola the Botdog, she might be one of my favourite characters in this book. That botdog is amazing and there's this quote towards the end of the book that applies to her that was so touching and spot on. I want a botdog! There are some scenes where she plays an important part and I liked reading about her.

This series is very consistent in the amount of world building provided in each book, every books ads a bit and even though this is the last book, there are still things added, things that get into place, pieces of the puzzle that we only get now. And then there's ofcourse the botdog which we haven't seen much about up till now. And the cyborg and how it ties into everything. So even in terms of world building this book added a lot.

To conclude: I really enjoyed this book, it was hard to read in a few parts, but I loved the ending, it was perfect! There's a lot that happens in this book and it was exacting seeing things line up for that final event that would decide everything. There is still a lot of character growth and change in this book and the characters are certainly one of the highlights of this book. In terms of world building some bits and pieces are added as well, making it complete. All in all a great ending to the trilogy!

Excuse me as I finish wiping the emotional tears from my eyes after reading one of the best endings ever!

This is by far David Estes's best series yet!! I am almost upset that the Kelly family saga is over.

I've been a huge fan of Benson's since the first chapter of Slip. The roller coaster life of having to live in hiding for his entire life and the grief he's suffered never changed who his true self was; just a really good guy!

I love how Estes always find the best in his characters! This is true for Harrison, Destiny, Geoffrey, and especially Janice and Michael. No matter how they started out, they all had amazing character arcs and I loved seeing how they turned out! I will sleep better now knowing this wonderful cast of characters are also sleeping better.

And then there's the wonderful Lola, the botdog. I think she needs her own twitter account and a place where she can receive fan mail. ;)

I can't wait to read Estes's next book because he seriously just keeps getting better and better. I'm not sure how he'll be able to top this one, but you know he will!

I've been waiting impatiently to read this book since finnishing Grip, and was not disappointed... It was awesome! The world building and character development were fantastic, and the plot was an emotional rollercoaster ride, filled with twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end. It was also a perfect ending to the trilogy, and tied everything up nicely.

I just finished my 3rd reading of Flip, this time reading with a group on Facebook. This series just gets better and better each time! It was really fun getting special insights from Estes during this group read and also seeing what others thought as we read each set of chapters together. Below is my original review.

David Estes continues to pull on your heartstrings the entire book. I loved so many lines from this book and really enjoyed the journey.

“He wondered what his heart would look like if he could pluck it from his chest and inspect it.” -- This line hit me so hard. I really loved it.

"From the greatest warrior to the meekest lamb, we're not that different when we sleep."

"Tragedy is a major part of the world we live in. You can't run from it, can't hide from it, can only face it head on and hope it doesn't take everything from you."

If these few lines aren't enough to make you wonder, then I'm not sure what motivates you. ;)

I will say I do have one issue with the series. Please note, I read only Beta Versions, which is why I didn't not decrease the star value. Plus the ending... it just makes your heart hurt and be happy all at the same time.

My resounding issue with this series (not sure if this was changed them from Beta version) is the narration difference between chapters. The only difference really between the narrator is when it is a chapter on The Destroyer. When the narrator is talking about the Destroyer, the narrator enjoys what the Destroyer does. The narrator uses very harsh language against Unbees and Slips, and glorifying words when describing the Destroyer. Narrator seems to agree and worship the Destroyer, whereas the narrator with Benson (and others) in other chapters is accepting and loving towards unbees.

I'm starting to wonder if there is anything David writes that isn't fantastic?!

Of the 3 books in the Slip series, Flip was my favourite. It perfectly brings the other two books together in a way that is so heart warming, emotional, but still full of action and suspense that we love so much. I finished the book feeling excited and packed full of glee.

It was the perfect ending (unless there is more??? Ooooo) to the story, I can't think of any questions left unanswered or loose ends not tied up.

Thank you very much for the wonderful story David, I have enjoyed every single minute of it, and I can't wait to see what you come out with next.

Good Book

I loved The Slip Trilogy and Flip the last of the trilogy. I love that even though some new bad twist of fate would happen right before Benson and family were about to succeed that in the end they are able to persevere and have a point as I give outcome. And best of all is the epilogue.

“No one’s good,” she says. “We’re all just different shades of bad.” – Destiny (Kindle Location 3153).

The Destroyer should be called the Invincible, because although he can’t manage to catch Benson or keep Harrison in captivity, he does manage to survive again and again, becoming more and more cyborg with each act of violence. Benson and Harrison Kelly, along with their friends will try to stop Pop Con for good, but in a race with the Lifers and their more violent methods, who will shut down the branch of government enforcing deaths first? And how many will die to accomplish this shutdown?

After reading David Estes’ Country Saga and Dweller Saga, I think the Slip Trilogy is far superior. I also think it is one of the best dystopian trilogies out there (and it’s one of my favorite genres so I’ve read a lot of them). The Slip trilogy is well written, highly interesting, focuses on the right parts of the plot and characters at the right times, will hold your attention throughout, and incorporates just the right amount of rebellion and uprising and government bullying.

Flip was a great ending to the trilogy, tying up all the loose ends with a satisfying finish. Everything makes sense in the bigger picture of the story and the smaller subplots between characters. For once I actually liked the epilogue Estes included for a year beyond all the main action.

I like how Estes communicates something positive through all his books, and the Slip Trilogy was no exception, “No one should have to feel like they’re not wanted, hated simply for being born. In the end, we’re all just humans, connected by things we can’t touch, like laughter and love and our fear of being left behind. Our fear of death. Of not being included in something we think is important and great but don’t really understand.” (Kindle Locations 4650-4652).

My only negative comment is disliking the plot element/helper introduced seemingly at random with Lola the dog. She was sprung on us for apparently no reason but was instrumental in moving the plot and accomplishing certain things plot wise.

Great ending to a wild dystopian ride. I loved this series. Each one got better and better. I am a David Estes fan. Full rounded characters, humor, sorrow, romance, and all the emotions that keep us on the edge of our seats. Twists and turns in the storyline, fast paced, this is just plain good writing. No swearing, implied sexual content, there is violence including torture (nothing real explicit). I can recommend for ages 14 and up. Though written about teens, and as a YA book, there is no reason that adults wouldn't enjoy them. Five stars from me and I am sad to see them end.

A perfect end to the perfect dystopian. I loved the series and the book. The thrill was well continued till the end and the prose was flowing and captivating like always. The reader immerses in the universe of Benson and Harrison Kelly and the Lifers. This series was a roller-coaster ride of adventure, courage and bravery. This is one of the best dystopian series

[I received a copy of this book through Netgalley.]

The conclusion to this trilogy, and a satisfying one, although I found the ending a little too quick and predictable.

One of the things I liked here is that we got more information about the world around the RUSA. Not a lot, of course, the trilogy’s aim wasn’t to paint a full geopolitical portrait; nevertheless, I always appreciate it when sci-fi/dystopian settings take into account not only to focus country, but also the others. This shakes off the ‘pocket universe’ feeling that is very often prevalent in this genre. In fact, it’d almost deserve a spin-off so that the author can have fun with what’s happening around and outside the RUSA.

Like in the previous books, I also enjoyed the family relationships. Benson and Harrison could’ve been awful to each other, even when thrown in the same predicament, with constant jealousy and resentment. While there were some tensions (it was unavoidable), though, they embraced each other’s respective existences, as a discovery of the brother they didn’t know they had, instead of embracing negative feelings. Which was great. And which leads me to another aspect I enjoyed: the toned-down romance. Yes, there is a romantic subplot, however:
- It’s not the main focus;
- It doesn’t cause the characters involved do stupid things and make stupid decisions because LUUUUURVE (I’m so tired of those silly romance plots where the world is ending but the main character is still too busy pondering which of the guys/girls s/he’s in love with);
- I mentioned this in my review about volume 2 already: when Benson is concerned, I liked seeing such a predictable romance -not- happen. Having everyone find their Twue Wuv or whatever would’ve been too saccharine for me. The focus here is FAMILY, not romantic love, and especially not romantic love as the be-all and end-all and the Highest Form of Love Ever.

Bonus point for Jarrod’s arc. That character was a POS and I hated his guts, but you know what, that’s GOOD, because it means I cared. He helped emphasize one end of the spectrum (the other end being the corrupt government), with his ‘a means to an end’ attitude and terrorist ways, including what he roped Geoffrey into doing. Who does that to a kid, spewing BS such as ‘your sister would be so proud of you’? Yeah. Exactly.

Now, to expand a little on my comments about the ending:

- ‘Too quick’: that is, compared to all the reversal of fortunes previously encountered.
- Predictable: there were quite a few more twists in this instalment, with the last secrets being revealed. However, as a result, the ending felt somewhat… uneventful? As if it was indeed the last sprint, but one that led to no more surprises. Don’t mistake me, it’s a good conclusion, only just a little too well packaged and ‘clean’ and neatly tied, for a series that was grittier than a lot of YA series out there… so I guess I expected something more bittersweet, with some last twist, maye?
- Some parts were anti-climactic, like what happened with the president.
- I gather that the Destroyer is gone, buuuuut… Like THAT? Now that was disappointing, all the more since we didn’t get to see him do much in the first half of the novel. Alright, as a villain, he was ‘too much’ anyway. Yet that end felt almost… comical? And it jars with the darker tones of the trilogy, because deep down, Domino is a broken human being—he was already deranged before, but he was also treated like an object, stuffed with mechanical parts, brought back from the brink of death instead of being let go with dignity, and generally it was as if everybody discarded his humanity from the beginning, never giving him any chance at all. (I’m not saying a redemption arc would’ve been good here—he was too far gone. Just… not -that- kind of ending.)

Conclusion: 3.5 stars. In spite of my criticisms, I did enjoy this last volume.

Original review is available on my blog at this link: https://yaguitarist.wordpress.com/201...

I wouldn’t dwell on the world building as I’m sure that I have raved so much about it in my other two reviews that everyone should already know how great it is. Instead, I’m going to focus more on the characters and plot for this review.

Overall, the conclusion to the series is pretty well done. Though I expected much more considering how good Slip and Grip were. I’m let down with how the story progressed in Flip. I wanted the scheme on taking down PopCon, i.e. Population Control, to be more action-packed but it fell flat. Well, I enjoyed Destiny, one of the characters in the novel, and Harrison’s grand entrance at the start of the scheme. I would love to see their epic skating and hoverboarding skills in person, it will be so amazing! ❤

I love Destiny in this novel. She finally grows out of her self-loath and stops blaming herself for things that she was unable to control. Out of all the characters, Destiny is the only one that made such a gigantic growth. Initially, I felt that other characters such as Benson and Harrison were overshadowed by Destiny when she was first introduced in the 2nd novel, Grip. But now, I find her addition into the story to be very meaningful. The story wouldn’t be a complete one without her and she is the only one who is able to change Harrison’s impulsive behaviour.

Benson is such a lovable character but I’m unable to relate to him. His character development is lacking after other characters such as Destiny, Harrison, Minda and Simon came into the picture. Even in Flip, I feel that lesser emphasis is placed on Benson, the main protagonist. Instead, more focus is placed on developing the new additions to the novel. It is such a bummer as I would love to get to know Benson more.

~SPOILERS~

There are still unanswered questions despite being the conclusion to the trilogy. There isn’t any indication whether The Destroyer is still alive. I don’t think I can safely assume that the mob sufficient to end a robot’s life? After all, The Destroyer could have easily overpowered the humans who were charging at him. Unless there were hundreds of people charging at him with the intention to end his life, I don’t think that I can safely assume that he is dead.

I find the ending of the president of RUSA to be pretty anti-climatic. I didn’t see the twist coming but I wasn’t surprised when Jarrod’s true identity was revealed? Rather, I was irritated with the president for not putting on a fight and just giving up like that.

Man, I hate Jarrod. His mind is so twisted that he can relentlessly brainwash a kid just to turn him into a suicide bomber. Come on, that kid just lost his loved ones, give him a break! I’m glad that Jarrod is gone for good. I wouldn’t want George to blow himself up with the mindset that Luce would be proud of him for avenging her death. Luce will be so mad and disappointed at her younger brother for doing that as she will never want George to do such a thing!

Boy, that is a really long review. All in all, I’m glad that Benson and his family and friends gotten the happy ending they’ve always wanted. 🙂 To those characters who lost their lives in this trilogy: You will always remain in my heart. ❤ Please give this trilogy a chance if you haven’t. XD Finally, I would like to thank the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this eArc in exchange for an honest review. 🙂

Another slam dunk

This was another great book by this author. I had finished fatemarked and saw the author had another series. Since I loved the watermarked series, I gave it a shot. I am so glad I did and it was another well written series, by this author. He has a way of immersing you into his story, so that it feels so life like and the characters are people you know. This series really made you think because you can see the situation happening. Supposedly the resources are low, so the world has to balance out population, but as we all know the only 100% pregnancy preventive is abstaining from sex. So accidents will happen. Is it right to kill that child to keep the balance? I believe no because life is sacred, but I can see another's point of view. I pray we are never put in the situation. But as you can see, the book makes you think and feel. I cannot compare the fatemarked series against this one because they are so different. Fatemarked is about a war torn country and this is a dystopian, but I can say they are both equally great. I hope you give this author's books a try, you will not be disappointed.

Flip by David Estes is the conclusion to the Slip Trilogy, a dystopian, post-apocalyptic story focusing on the Kelly family.

Pop-Con is in charge and they control whether or not someone can have a child; someone must die before another can be born. There are some that slip through the system which they call “Slips”, there are also “Jumpers” and “Diggers” that either jump over or dig under the border walls into RUSA from Mexico and Canada. The Kelly family is on a mission to bring Pop-con down.

The twists and reveals in Flip are amazing, some I guessed and others surprised me, but they made the story an amazing read with the perfect conclusion.

The characters are well-written and their interactions show growth and make you truly care about them.

There are dark themes throughout the series but it is interspersed with hope and small wins that build up to the great ending.

Phenomenal

At first I was worried this book might be like book 3 of The Hunger Games - where the whole series was compelling and brilliant and exciting but then the stakes got too high, too many died or were damaged beyond repair, and the story felt depressing. But this one, even though the stakes are just as high and there is so much loss and destruction, ends with hope - and how that feels, like the entirety of the series and the characters and their humanity, absolutely REAL. And I loved it.

This last book wraps up the story nicely. There are a few unexpected twists. It doesn't feel rushed to get to the end and seems well planned out. Really enjoyed the trilogy and look forward to reading more by David Estes.
