A cowboy walks into a bar...

Grant is the second story in the Riding Hard series by Jennifer Ashley. This author is one of my favourite historical romance writers and when she decided to branch out into contemporary, I jumped at the chance to read them. Unfortunately, they just don't pack the same kind of punch. These books are a little formulaic a lot corny and riddled with unnecessary angst.

Grant and Christina had been in a serious and loving relationship when they try unsuccessfully to start a family. Their relationship crumbles and eventually they break up and try to move on. Christina starts a relationship with Ray, a bull rider, but her feelings for Grant never go away. Grant knows that Christina is the love of his life, but fills his time with buckle bunnies that follow him around. She works in the only bar in town, he works as a stuntman specialising in horses. Unfortunately for both of them their paths cross constantly, and they must endure seeing each other with other people.

This story is about the struggles they face on finding their way back to each other. One of the main problems they originally had but now must work on is communication. They get into arguments and instead of talking through their issues calmly, scream at each other, which then leads to screaming sex...lots of screaming going on and no real resolution. We know the couple have chemistry, because we're told so, but I didn't really feel it. They seemed to be together out of habit, more than true love. If you love someone, you don't wait and watch them be with someone else, you fight for your happiness.

It's all good. The family are there to back each other. The little town faces drama and all the brothers save the day and all the cowboys ride off into the sunset...or something like that.

Grant and Christina have a painful history. They were madly in love but their inability to start a family drove them apart so there’s a lot of hurt between them. There’s also still a lot of love between them, so when a wedding reception brings them together, they still feel that spark and one thing leads to another and before they realize it, Christina and Grant are back in bed together. Deciding it’s wiser to leave town than figure out how to work things out with Grant, Christina’s plans are put on hold when she realizes she’s pregnant. Now Christina’s has to wait to see who the father is.

There was so much in this one that I’m just not a fan of. Christina playing with Ray’s emotions, Christina getting jealous of Grant for having other relationships (even though she was with Ray ), Grant parading a string of buckle bunnies in front of Christina just to make her jealous, then there was the whole who’s the daddy issue. It just seemed that there was a lot of high school drama from the start and it only built up as the plot progressed.

Plus, there was a lot of moments that had me scratching my head. Like Christina confessing her secrets to the woman she declared her enemy, odd doctor visits used to create unnecessary conflict, and a random pop-up storm that just seemed out of place. Oh and I can’t forget the fact Christina made her sister tell Grant and Ray she was pregnant and that she didn’t know which was the father.

I wasn’t a fan of Christina. She just rubbed me the wrong way. She was very childish, constantly putting up walls around Grant, constantly trying to push him away. And I didn’t care for the way she treated Ray. There was no cheating; she ended things with him before starting something with Grant, but there was still that feeling that she used Ray. Even though Grant made some wankerish moves, he redeemed himself. I could see him growing and becoming a stand-up guy.

While the relationship between Grant and Christina had its moments of believability, I just wasn’t buying what they were trying to sell. Yes, I could tell they loved each other—Grant more so than Christina—but there was so much hurt between them and I didn’t see that being dealt with. I didn’t see the healing that needed to happen.

This was my first time listening to Eric Dove narrate and he took a bit of getting used to. He was a little gruff in his portrayal and I’m not sure if I found him to be a bit meh or if it was just the book.

Overall, this just wasn’t’ my cuppa tea. I’m normally eager to gobble up a series by Jennifer Ashley, but I’m more than willing to take a pause before trying out the next book. Honestly, what I enjoyed the most about this series was Grant’s job. I think this is the first time I’ve read about someone that’s a trick rider, so it was interesting seeing those aspects thrown in.

"Grant" is the second book in Ms Ashley's riding hard series and picks up with the wedding day f his brother Adam to his first love Bailey. Grant being Adam's closest brother is his best man and of course Bailey'smaid of honor is her sister Christina , but to spite the rift between he and Christina they are both determined not to let it interfere with Adam and Bailey's day!
Even though the two of them probably should have been married already, neither Grant or Christina can really pick out what truly caused them to separate after five years of living together, butt is more than clear to everyone in Riverbend that neither one of them is really over the other.
To spit Christina's best effort swing Grant with other women all ver him at the wedding is just too much, she leaves the party tent but soon finds herself not just stargazing under a tree but quite literally stuck to a tree with he bridesmaid dress; and the one person that happens to show up turns out to be the very man she was running from, Grant. Grant coming to her aid and getting her untangled from the tree benches , the proximity, his warmth and their desire for one another lead to hot impulsive moments, that is until his brother Carter comes looking for him .
With the moment ruined Christina flees and soon Grant finds himself having a city slicker women Tehran at hm by Carter, a new customer wanting them to do a commercial , Karen.
Karen also turns out to be a bit of a tiger and not afraid to make a play for Grant; a play that after having Christna back in his arms he wants nothing to do with .
Grant really wants no one else but Christna , but she is involved with Ray Malory and seeing her the next day in her truck still in her bridesmaid dress coming from the direction of Ray's house, just further confirms that they lost their heads for a few wild moments, but knowing that does not help his heart.
Grant is pushed by his brother Carter to be the face of their business and take Karen around town and discuss the stunts for the commercial she will be filming , but the usual town of Rivwrbend is being a big on the cold side. Christina comes to his defense with the town folk insisting that ifGrant knew what his client was trying to do he would not be showing her around. Turns out Karen is not just in town to get the Campbell boys to do stunt for a commercial but to purchase as much as the town of Riverbend for her ex husband's development business as possible. Once Christina clues the boys in they set plans in motion and Grant and Christna spend some time talking, Grant enlists Christina's help.
These two go back and forth through out the storyline, for them their arguments are just as hot and passionate as their love making and oddly enough Karen who is seen as an enemy by Christina actually becomes a driving force in fixing Grant and Christna's relationship.
A convoluted road to a second chance at romance.

I hate giving a Jennifer Ashley book 2 stars, because normally I love her books but I just couldn't get into this book. I was pushing myself just to finish it. I had really felt for Grant and Christina in the previous book and I was really looking forward to reading about their reconcilliation.

Unfortunately, I didn't care for the way this book got them together. I don't want to say too much due to spoilers but I didn't think that Grant and Christina really came to any resolution or made any real changes that would solve the problems that broke them up in the first place. I had a hard time with the first 1/4 of the book where Christina is with Ray but still in love with Grant and he's basically just whoreing around with multiple girls even though he's still in love with Christina.

The twist was really obvious and you knew how it would end. I did think that Grant showed some change/maturity in how he delt with that but it wasn't enough to make the book better than okay for me.

I did enjoy the secondary characters and the beginning of Grace and Carter's story which I have much higher hopes for.

I like Jennifer Ashley enough that I will try Book 3 before I give up on this series.

I really liked Grant and Christina as a couple, but wish there could have been more communication and less big misunderstanding. I get the difficulty of what they were going through, going through that same issue myself and my ex for 10 years, it takes a toll on a relationship. Grant and Christina broke up after being together for several years because of them both wanting kids, but being plagued with the inability to get preggers put a strain on their relationship. Instead of going to an infertility doctor and finding out what the true issue was and not communicating with one another, they fought instead, thinking one was blaming the other. Now I get why the story was this way, we needed the vehicle for the story arc. But eventually Christina and Grant finally figure out that they are stronger together than they are apart. Of course not all is smooth sailing and JA throws in a monkey wrench there at the end that was a bit of a tickle, but overall I thought it was a solid read. Really looking forward to extremely shy, but sexy Carter's book.

Kyle unbent enough to laugh. “Shit, if we have to go through watching another relationship like yours and Christina’s, I think we’ll all move away.”
“Screw you,” Grant said good-naturedly.

And I think that about sums it up. LOL. This couple took a minute to get it right, and not without messily getting other people involved, either. Some readers won't like .

Was this a great story? No, but the family is fun and I'm looking forward to the next one. This one was just too blah. They never resolved their issues that broke them up before. I'm not a big believer that a baby makes everything better. Also, I'm judgmental enough to not be impressed with someone who has a "who my baby daddy" moment. I expected Maury to show up with you are NOT the father. I ended up feeling sorry for the way she treated Ray. I have no idea why they dated in the first place and in the age of sexual education why would anyone be having unprotected sex? Especially with a man who is known for having "buckle bunnies" all over the rodeo circuit.

It was OK but not a wow for me.

Two thirds through the book the plot and dialogue became cliche, and I started to lose interest. Some fun, witty dialogue in places but got very angsty and melodramatic near the end - it felt like a soap opera plot, rather than what I expected from this author.

Love her Mackenzie series, but not going to keep the Riding Hard western series to reread.

I was so so on the first book of the series, so this book was going to be a make or break book for me. Sadly it didn’t work out. I didn’t care for either of the couple, hated how they kept circling each other. The last straw came for me when Christina hid in a closet when Grant had a man eater in his house. Granted I don’t think Grant wanted sex from her, but the childish behavior on both their parts made me want to stop. In the end this one just wasn’t for me.

Another second chance brother. Hope this is not a trend in this series.
Grant and Christina lived together but fell apart when she could not get pregnant.
Christina takes up with another man, Ray, and Grant parades a whole battalion of women past her in the bar where she works.
At Adam and Baileys, from book 1’s wedding, these two have sex, they don’t reconnect, call it what it is, they have sex.
Of course we then have Christina pregnant but not knowing who the father is, Grant or Ray.
What follows is juvenile high school behaviour. Enemies pretending to be friends, two males posturing and a dithering heroine who cannot be honest with either man.
Lack of honesty and communication will follow these two into marriage.
The only one I liked was Ray and I really hated how badly Ray was treated by Christina in this book.
Read and reviewed years ago but reviews are missing. Just doing a short review this time.
Do enjoy another couple of series by this author much more.

Christina and Grant were together for so long that even when the separated physically they were still together emotionally. They tried living together and when that did not work the shattered each others heart by separating. This story is an emotional ride that will keep you excited and hopeful to the very end. Loved every moment.

So looking forward to Carter

Not sure about this read

Grant Campbell and Christina Ferrell's story is a little complicated and volatile. After dating and living together for 5 years (I think that's what it said) and still rather young seemed when they couldn't get pregnant every thing down hill. But they weren't married. Any who Christina started seeing Ray Malroy but her feelings for Grant never subsided. Everytime she saw him with other women she was furious and threw herself into a type of depression. The story took a turn when she told Ray she couldn't be with him and he agreed stating he didn't want to be with someone who was thinking about another man.

She and Grant started dancing around each other but I felt for Grant. It was like he had to walk on eggshells around her. Yes he loved her deeply and supposedly she loved him back but something seemed to be onesided with this relationship. Can't put my finger on it.

The real shocker was when she semi was back with Grant and then realized she might be pregnant BUT it could have been Ray's baby or Grant's. OMG woman you're sleeping with two guys. What about protection. Did you not think about that. So she sleeps with Ray he goes on a job them two weeks later she hops in the sack with Grant. Really. What she did to both those men was horrible. Ray acted all big and bad about it but you know he was hurting. Grant was insecure about even being able to father a child since they couldn't before. Talk about mental anxiety. To me that's cruel and unusual punishment.

In the end it all worked out and Grant was happy and I'm happy for him. But Christina was NOT my favorite.

Now I'm reading Carter's story and OMG I can't believe what happened already. Stay tuned for his review. Talk about shocking.

Spoilers.
I enjoyed this one and don't mind a second chance romance and I actually liked that the leading lady, Christina, wasn't just at home pinning away for the H, while he was out there living it up with the ladies, she tried to get on with her love life.
I did think that maybe they didn't really address what broke them up in the first place, they admitted their mistakes but no real resolution I didn't think.
Grant was pretty swoon worthy, as are all the Campbell brothers, and I liked that he was pretty honest with Christina about his relationship with Karen, there was no real big dark secrets. Christina's honesty about her pregnancy was great, even though it made for an awkward as hell encounter it was all out there in the open.
Great secondary characters again and this time the Brothers step in to "save" the town from a developer, maybe a little out there and at times I was unsure if Karen really was as nice as she portrayed but it all worked out in the end.
Really looking forward to Carter's story and I do hope that Ray and Kyle end up with books of their own.
Overall a great addition to the series and I look forward to the next one.

The storyline of this book was ok. I also listened to the Audiobook. The narration was good, but the basic story,....not my favorite.

I kind of liked Grant and Christina. I did think that with the misunderstandings and miscommunications, their behavior was more like high school students. They did have chemistry, but not much of a relationship. The relationship boiled down to their past, and the time they spent getting reaquainted, which was more tell than show for me.

I also thought the situation Christina found herself in with Grant and Ray was interesting. Especially when Grant was supposedly the love of her life, and Ray was aware of it, and Christina didn't plan on a future with Ray. I got more of a sense in her part that they were FWB.

I'm not sure if I missed their ages or not, but when Christina told Bailey what was going on and Bailey "fixed" things for her, I had to wonder again if they were just out of high school.

The book wasn't terrible. I did feel like I had walked into the middle of Grant and Christina's story. I'm going to try Carter's book and hope that it is better.

The Best Thing In My Life!!!

Grant Campbell had been on a relationship with Christina Farrell for years. Everything was going great until they decided they wanted to have a baby with no medical problems from either of them. They took the plunge yet nothing happened. The disappoinent had taken hold of them so they decided to go their separate ways.

Christina started dating Ray Malory and Grant well he was known to have a different woman/women on his arms often. Despite that they still loved and missed each other like crazy. Christina couldn't see Grant with anyone else without feeling as a part of her was slowly dying. She made a life changing decision.

Grant's brother Adam was marrying Christina's sister Bailey ( ADAM ) so they were bound to rund into each other. Christina and Grant gave their relationship another try and this time around they pulled out all the stops. Rekindling their love was what they both needed.

When the community of Riverbend found itself on the verge of losing everything dear to them because of some greedy corporate the Campbells and a new partner worked together to save the people of Riverbend. Grant and Christina got some great news and finally got their HEA.

GRANT is the second book in Jennifer Ashley's RIDING HARD series. It was heart-wrenching, alluring, fast-paced and a must read. Excellent job by Jennifer Ashley.

I really like this couple.... The family relationship were great. The storyline was great. The friendship were great. New character were great. I understand the writing style now. However I just wish it was a bit longer just a few more chapters. I just felt like something was missing in a way. I love how it started with a wedding and ended with a wedding. But I just wish it was just a bit more. But I can't wait to read more. This series is wonderful and fun to read. I feel like I'm there with them but I just want it a bit more. I'm thinking by the next book I'll probably start giving this series more stars.

COWBOY HEAVEN!

I once again enjoyed this 2nd installment in the new series by Jennifer Ashley. Although normally a paranormal writer, she has captured my heart with these endearing brothers. Grant is a stunt rider on horses but the danger he faces at work rivals that of his love life! Christina has loved Grant for years and was heartbroken when their relationship didn't work out. Some shocking news brings these two together again but not easily. Cabin they overcome their past mistakes? Find out when you read this good book!

I'm still enjoying this series. I liked Grant and Christina and their story was entertaining.

My one criticism is that Grant and Christina's problems could have been explained more fully. I know we were told that they'd had trouble conceiving a child, but we were also told they'd been fighting a lot and it seemed there was more to it. That part of the story was a little too vague.

Other than that, this was a good read.

Intense, emotional read with a well-deserved HEA. Love the Campbell men and the strong women that have them tongue-tied and fighting for love. Grant and Christina had a complicated history and had to work extra hard to come to terms with their doubts and failures in order to have the future they both finally realized they had always wanted. Touching journey to find happiness and love. Good read!

Christina and Grant have split but they cant seem to live on to other relationships. Grant sees guys flirting with Christina and he can't handle it. Christina sees the gals hang kn Grant and sees fire. These two find a way into bed and see how much it all works when they aren't fighting. Christina finds herself pregnant and having to see if Grant or Ray is the daddy. Nothing but joy is felt all around her.

I am liking this series!

Grant and Christina are the focus of book two in the Riding Hard series. Ms. Ashley continues with excellent character development, settings and believable plots. A bonus is all the secondary personalities are so real I want to know all of them. Adds a lot of dimension and spice to the book. A fine romance.

The problem with this book, is that it was practically over in the first one. If you read the fisrt book, you knew exctly who the characters were, what their problems were, and what would happen to them for the 'happily ever after' story. It's all very cheesy and too predictable.
Also, the characters are turning increasingly cartoonish.

Book 2 in the Riding Hard series tells the story of Grant and Cristina. These two go through a LIT of ups and downs, but you’ll be rooting for them all the way. The brothers are a great team, as usual, and I’m on the book 3! (I listened to the audio book narrated by Eric Dove, who narrated the first book. Still a little to ‘reader rather than story teller’ for me.

Wonderful

I have to say, Grant and Christina's story was like watching an episode of the Maury show. They were seriously messed up. Thank God they finally figured it out. I did feel sorry for Ray, he didn't deserve how things played out.
