The universe contained in this volume is one of the better contemporary sci-fi/dystopia/horror hybrids that I've seen in contemporary comics (only second to Hellboy). There are so many fascinating and bizarre elements that converge to make this an unforgettable story (although it might cross over into the obtuse one too many times). Igor Baranko creates a world, not dissimilar from our own, where all conspiracies and mystical theories are completely true and actually mesh together without collapsing into a meandering "theory of everything". UFOs have stolen the body of Lenin, the insane clone of Isaac Newton is trying to convince every man to be castrated, the last Chechen alive is on a mission from God (and might be the reincarnation of Shiva) and Russia is ruled by a megalomaniac sci fi writer. I don't know how any of this works, but it does. Because Baranko had control over the visuals as well as the art the pictures become an integral part of the work in a way that they don't in most other comics. When re-reading this volume I was struck at how much detail was put into the re-occurrence of certain motifs. A central plot point is the theme of reincarnation and throughout the volume numerous references to cycles and circles are created (the soldiers play Russian roulette, the last of the Chechens march in a circle which is depicted on the cover, the lines on the first page mimic the lines on the last, etc).
If The Horde has any failing it is that it introduces too many cool ideas and concepts in such a small amount of space. I would have loved to read an equally long story about "The Greats" (who have been cloned from past successful politicians and scientists), the man from Chernobyl who has mutated psychic powers or the last Chechen who believes that Allah has sent him on a mission to "Heavenly Chechnya". All of these characters, even if they aren't necessarily particularly likeable, are fascinating. I wish that Baranko had more time and space to develop this world so that we could read issues which focused on smaller stories in this universe instead of forcing everything into an epic saga which wraps up rather shortly at 144 pages. I definitely recommend this for fans of Hellblazer, Fallout or Hellboy.

Якось неможливо повірити, що той самий автор, що й "Максим Оса". Надто багато всього відбувається, але в кінці все сплітається в ідею того, що необхідно розірвати циклічність, щоб досягти мети (що гарно передано обкладинкою і паралелями між початком/завершенням історії)

Нарешті я прочитав комікс, який не квапиться!
Баранько витрачає на розвиток оповіді рівно стільки часу, скільки на це треба, не намагаючись увіпхнути мільйон подій на дві сторінки.
Текст абсурдний і гротескний, але в межах описаного всесвіту все дуже логічно.
Якби ця історія була написана зараз, то вона б видавалася простим паразитуванням на темі Путіна і Зеленського. Але її сила в тому, що вона це все гівно ненароком передбачила. Ну і в гуморі теж.
Одну тільки річ у майбутніх виданнях варто було б підправити. Вже під кінець книги персонажка двічі каже про "недовго його тіло житиме на Землі". Це очевидна цитата з російського перекладу Дгаммапади:
В українському перекладі Максима Копаниці цей вірш виглядає так:

I really liked this book a lot. Lots of really cool stuff going on. Baranko is Ukranian, per the brief bio on the back cover, so that is a clear and huge influence.
The Horde is about a Russian dictator in 2040 who wants to use the spirit of Ghengis Khan to create a new Pan-Asian empire. There is also Joe (shortened from Jhokhar), the last Chechen, who is on a quest to attain the Heavenly Chechnya. (the real one was nuked ten years ago.) And buddhist woman whose role starts off as merely intriguing and philosophical, but turns out to be very important in Genghis Khan's re-incarnation cycle.
The story has got some really interesting Buddhist under-pinnings, and I appreciate Baranko's take on the inter-twining of church and state. The contrasts between the highest Russian general and the highest Russian priest were quite interesting, although neither had the true faith of the dictator, who seemed to only believe in his own drug-addled visions. A general who is uncomfortable and out of place in a faith-based government, and a priest whose guidance is clearly ignored.
Joe is, no matter how demented, my favorite character in the book. I love the idea that he sees all of the other characters and events as just temptations on his path to Heavenly Chechnya, and, aside from the Buddhist woman and the spirit of Genghis Khan, he is probably the most sympathetic character in the book. I also loved the nearly throw-away gag when Joe meets Abraham Lincoln, who was cloned in the early 21st century as part of American's "Return to Greatness" initiative. Except it turned out that Caesar, Lincoln, etc. were products of their time, and they drifted into obscurity and were forgotten by the world.
Baranko's art is strong, and really, my only complaint was that my knowledge of Buddhism isn't very strong, so there were several layers that I'm sure that I missed.
The Horde is definitely recommended. It's a very delightful, funny (in a wry sense) and smart read.

Це епічна, макабрична фантасмагорія, що ще в 2003 році передбачала російську експансію в Європу. Ну а на шляху, як завжди, перші хто? Звісно українці. Радикально, жорстоко, епічно, гротескно - це і є Орда!

Це щось божевільне 😵💫 але мені сподобалося. Особливо останній чеченець, що шукає небесну Ічкерію. Суміш індуїзму, імперської хвороби, радіації і диктатури — комікс заграв новими барвами саме після 24.02.

Безумовно кращий з українських коміксів. Пророча футуристика в суміші з сатирою та залученням східних вірувань. Дискурси, які досі актуальні, ведуть до нірвани та викликають щиру посмішку.

AMAZING GRAPHIC NOVEL!
The artwork was great, very in tone with the story and the whole setting.
The story was, also, good, and although written in 2004 there are some features that are showing the big gaps between the ukrainian and russian sides.

Дуже гарний, цікавий, сюрреалістичний комікс.
Приємно бачити талановитих українців у роботі.
Помітним також є вплив саме французької аудиторії і запиту відповідної культури мальописів - багато Моебіуса по атмосфері.

Здавалося б, чого реготати, коли комікс достатньо дивний, а зображений і ньому світ – то «треш і угар».
Але я сміялася саме з деталей, з того, як цікаво автор обігрує персонажів і їх дії.

Країною править колишній письменник-фантаст - Іван Апельсинов, або просто диктатор.
На вигляд, наче вже разів 10 помирав і знову оживав, ну і ясно ж, що з замашками покорити весь світ.

У нього під боком завжди крутяться військові, які виконують всі вказівки диктатора, а також….отут я «взоржала», як то кажуть, бо як же диктатор без ручного патріарха))

Вся ця братія, добряче сидить на наркоті та мріє оживити Чингісхана, для чого розгортають цілу спецоперацію з поїздкою в Київ, щоб це зробити.

Возьмём трансметрополитан, добавим Пелевина (в роли одного из персонажей!), суфизм, теорию пассионарности и колесо дхармы; перенесём действие в антиутопическую Россию будущего; Кинематографично и красочно отрисуем.
Получится вот эта пушка, которую я (не самый главный любитель графических романов) дичайше рекомендую.

Waste of money. (Cannot say “waste of time” because the book can be “read” in just half an hour.)
Considering everything I knew about this book and its author, plus the preliminary impression from looking at its pages, I expected something crazy but still meaningful. And probably especially meaningful today, during the war. All those metaphors about the “Horde,” Russia as an endless chain of imperial anti-Western/anti-democratic entities with every new dictator even madder than the previous one, Ukraine as a frontier between Russia and the civilized world, etc.
Instead, it’s very typical for “superheroic comix stips” nonsensical gibberish, with strange monsters, reincarnations, meditations, aliens, paranormal abilities, and whatnot. I did not spot even a cohesive general storyline — it’s just some picturesque mythology, with lots of blood and weird transformations of humans into something beyond-human, and vice versa.
The book was initially published in France (2003), but after this, it was translated into Russian and published in Russia (2015 — yep, AFTER 2014). Only very recently (2020), the Ukrainian-French-American author Ігор Баранько decided that it may proooobably be a good idea to publish it also in Ukraine (and the Ukrainian translation was made based on the Russian text rather than French — and you can see some obvious Russian cliches there). Also, Ukrainians in the book are talking mostly about their hatred of “Judeo-Masons,” so yeah… strange stuff. No intelligent story, no interesting ideas, no nothing.
The graphic aspect of the book is OK — the visualization is engaging and well-done, although it looks pretty much standard for “superheroic comix stips,” and there is nothing that you would like to look at closely, to enjoy clever details or something like that.
I regretted about buying it.

The Horde a graphic novel by Ukrainian artist/writer Igor Baranko, centered around the notion of destiny. The book looked to me like a poor mix between Neil Gaiman's American Gods and Norman Spinrad's Other Americas and, overall, I did not enjoy it.
The narrative is convoluted and rather undecided. There is a loose plot that involves a dystopian Russia, an atomized Chechnya, an important Ukraine (really!?), a defunct US of America, a reincarnated Mongolia, and aliens. There are many gods, many myths, and various historical figures. Everything is mystical. And Ukraine as wannabe invaders of Russia seemed to me ridiculous.
Graphics-wise, I found the style typical of the 1990s: the type commonly found in long-running series, of which Watchmen (1987) is perhaps the archetype. The scary looks cliche scary, the mystical looks cliche mystical.
All in all, for me The Horde is too much violence and too little content.

The best comics about russian and ukrainian politics and culture of early 2000s. The scary thing is, it's still actual nowadays and it's even seems less hyperbolized.

В России недалекого альтернативного будущего эксцентричный правитель мнит себя реинкарнацией Чингисхана, его агенты пытаются тайком выкрасть из соседнего государства тело умершего столетие назад тибетского монаха, пока загадочная девушка медитирует о чем-то в Тыве, НЛО беспорядочно похищают людей, а некий таинственный незнакомец движется по сюжету навстречу кульминации, уничтожая всех, кто встает у него на пути.
С одной стороны, эстетика недалекого, «грязного» и эклектичного будущего, равно как и быстрый темп повествования и динамично сменяющие друг друга множественные POV-персонажи, а также заход на территорию трансцендентного, не могут не вызвать ассоциации с романами Филипа Дика. С другой – постмодернистское заигрывание с реалиями и культурным наследием нашей страны и немалая (кому-то может даже показаться, что слишком большая) доля буддизма, конечно же, сразу отсылает нас к Виктору Пелевину. Где-то на стыке двух этих творческих методов и обретается очень неплохой «пророческий» комикс «Орда», сценаристом и художником которого выступил Игорь Баранько, а колористом первой трети – ни много, ни мало великий Дэйв Стюарт.
Про пророчества хочется сказать следующее: конечно, часть из них – это просто цайтгайст нулевых годов, а часть – баадер-майнхоф со стороны уважаемого читателя, но Баранько несомненно очень проницательный человек, прекрасно понимавший, о чем он, на самом деле, пишет под видом этого разухабистого жанрового винегрета, и некоторые моменты комикса из конца 2022-го года смотрятся почти сверхъестественно жуткими в своем предречении реальности.
Помимо отличных писательских навыков, Баранько демонстрирует и первоклассное владение карандашом, и, думаю, не будет большим допущением сказать, что действительно яркий и запоминающийся художественный стиль Баранько, в немалой степени, поспособствовал тому, что его заметили на Западе. Я в захваті від візуальної частини коміксу, і мене місцями дуже порадували відсилки і навіть сюжет, але останній, як би то сказати, спантеличує.

A decent one, I liked the graphic part, the plot is limping a little though. I feel the connection to the material and overall vibe is cool, but, alas, far from perfect.
